Jorasanko Tahkur Bari is located in North Kolkata. It is the ancestral home of kabi Guru Rabindra Nath Tagore. He was born and breathed his last in this house. So, it is a heritage place and having great historical importance.
Prince Dwarka Nath tagore, the great grand father of Rabindranth Tagore, built this house in 18th century. Now, it is converted in to a heritage museum where lots of photographs, memento related to the poet are displayed for the visitors. You can get to see lots of stuffs used in the traditional aristocrat Thakur Bari of the then Kolkata. Thakur Bari was the pioneer in many aspect of Bengali life and culture, so this place is a must visit to explore the history of last century in Bengal.
Other part of the house is now Rabindra Bharati University which was established in the year 1962. I have visited this place twice. I stay in southern part of the city, so commuting to this place is not so easy for me by bus or car. It takes lot of time. So, I prefer to commute via metro railways. Jorasanko Thakur Bari is located in between M.G Road and Girish Park metro station. In fact, it is better to get down at Girish Park metro and you have to walk only 5 minutes to reach this place in a narrow lane.
While entering, you will come to see a statue of Rabindra Nath Tagore. The garden in front of the house is well maintained by the authority. The museum is on the first floor.
Often, several occasion, workshops, seminar are organized in this premise. Actually, it is a place that is associated with Rabindra Nath Tagore. So, it will not attract to everybody. If we are keen to know about Rabindranath and his works, this place is a must visit for the people coming to Kolkata.
I have seen several people from Bangladesh coming to this place as well as people from Japan, Europe are also seen.
A light and sound show is organized every evening from 6 PM. This is done both in Bengali and English and every session lasts for 40 minutes. It was really a wonderful experience for me!
If you are a lover of art, history and culture and most probably want to explore Rabindrantha and his life, work, it is the ideal place to visit. You just need maximum 2-3 hours to complete the tour.
I recommend this place.
