“An infamous incident involving an underarm delivery occurred on February 1, 1981 when Australia were playing New Zealand in a One-day International, the third of five matches in the final of the Benson & Hedges World Series Cup. New Zealand required a six to tie the match from the final ball, with eight wickets down.
The Australian captain (Greg Chappell) ordered the bowler (his brother, Trevor
Chappell) to bowl underarm to avoid the possibility that the No. 10 New Zealand
batsman (Brian McKechnie) would score a six from the last ball to tie the match.
Australia won the game but the New Zealand batsmen marched off in disgust and
since that day the underarm bowling incident has been a source of discussion, both
heated and jocular, between Australians and New Zealanders. It was described
as ''the most disgusting incident I can recall in the history of cricket'' by the then
Prime Minister of New Zealand, Rob Muldoon. Even the Australian Prime Minister,
Malcolm Fraser, called the act ''contrary to the traditions of the game''.

The above mentioned incident would be known to every person under the sun who
call himself a cricket buff. When the first time I heard that Greg Chappell was
appointed the coach of the Indian team, this incident was the first thing that came
into mind, but I scarped it away thinking that Chappell would have changed years
from that incident and that he would be reluctant to fall into any more controversies,
least did I know that he would fall into something worse within the first few months
of his appointment as coach!
I had taken a self confessed leave without further notice from mouthshut.com to
write exclusively for my college magazine ‘PLEXUS’ of which I am on the editorial
board, but the Greg vs Saurav incident was something I just couldn’t resist ! This
review of mine is going to be different from the rest of the views you would read in
newspapers and television, this one if going to look at the fine print, analyze issues
and talk about things which the media companies are too afraid to talk about. I am
going to analyze the email from an angle no one has done before, so here goes…
THE INCIDENT- GREG vs SAURAV
If you haven’t heard the Greg Vs Saurav incident in the recent times either you have
shifted to some other planet or simply you are cut off from the rest of the world by
floods or hurricanes. But for benefit of those who came in late here is a short recap.
The Pandora’s Box opened when Saurav Ganguly in an interview with Harsha
Bhogle said that ‘people’ suggested to him to step down as captain just before the
match. He never mentioned the coach neither did the say it as if he really bothers
about what was said, he just said it with a straight face matter of factly ! The media
tore this statement apart and suggested that there is an out and out war between
the captain and the coach and that Greg asked Saurav to step down and give
youngsters a chance (especially Kaif).
After the incident the two gave a Pseudo patch up, kiss and makeup show for the
cameras by playing pool together showing that there had never been a problem
until the bomb really was dropped by something even worse. In the style of
American Papparazi the media somehow got hold of an email which Chappell had
sent to the BCCI. The email which was five page long and was typical Aussie style
created a havoc in the cricket world…. It is this Email by Chappell which I am going
to tear apart further and answer questions which may remain unanswered.
Q1. Who leaked the email ?
One part of the job of a coach is to give detailed information about the team and
the performances and critically analyze the players and send it as a full report to the
BCCI selectors and Board members. Every coach of every team of any sport has to
do a similar thing and so did Chappell. Unfortunately the private and confidential
email somehow got leaked into the press. Now there may been hundreds of emails
which previous coaches had sent to the BCCI but why and how this very email which has some really astonishing details get leaked ?
The regular theories are that some peon or third party not involved directly to the
incident leaked it. “It is quite possible. The Peon who used to photocopy the team
selection used to leak it to the Press when I was the captain”, says Wasim Akram.
Another theory which is slightly more radical is that the leak was a result of the on going power struggle within the BCCI’s administrators. The fact that this coach
captain controversy falls in the middle of BCCI’s political turnover can’t be a
coincidence ! The most unlikely theory which some stupid Journo of some stupid
news channel proposed is that Saurav Ganguly leaked it ! Why would someone dig his own grave ? One more possibility someone hacked the mailboxes, quite possible
isn’t it !
Om’s Theory : My theory which is even more radical is that the leak was made
by Greg Chappell himself ! The fight really started when Ganguly leaked a private
conversation behind close doors which was a wrong thing to do and made Chappell
look like a Crocodile Dundee out to get his wild and wayward ‘boys’. Chappell
obviously retaliated by leaking his email ! It would be easiest for Chappell to do so
and somehow I feel his ploy is already working !! Infact in the poll last evening on
NDTV, 65% of people support Chappell !! Most interesting part is the panel chosen
to look into this matter consists of Gavaskar, Shastri and Venkatraghvan the very
panel that choose Greg Chappell as the coach ! Obviously it is going to come down
to a decision because the dressing room isn’t big enough for both especially after
this email, and seeing the support Chappell is getting the choice is obvious. This
would have been the only way to kick out Ganguly who would otherwise would be
stay behind as a infected toe and bring the team to a septic shock !
