?Personality tells about competence.? This need not be a correct statement but normally many people first judge a person based on appearance, verbal communication and behavior. This may not be correct in many cases but it is normal. Many a time actual performance and character of a person ignored initially.
To improve?acceptance by people? one has to work or groom in many areas. I like to highlight some pointers to start a discussion forum. Some of these pointers we discuss in length during training sessions and I am sure many of you know about it. Please feel free to write comments or m2m.
# First impression - Does it matters?
It really matters. We have to work on it and first step is to improve our appearance.
So, improve Your Appearance. We cannot do much to our feature but well grooming surely help to improve. Nail, hair, skin, moustache, spectacle, cloths, shoe, hygiene are few elements that are visible from outside.
? Appearance
It is necessary to give enough importance to good grooming. Do not ignore personal hygiene because it matters? remember those advertisements of toothpaste or talcum powder.
Take care of dress code to suit the occasion. Need not go for a designer outfit but being tidy and well dressed goes a long way in creating an image to build relation or finalize a deal.
Do not forget to shine your shoe.
? Voice
Worried about voice? Dear friends, everyone is not blessed like Big B. So, put into practice to speak clearly and at a moderate pace. One can really improve voice and verbal communication, if tried. Use simple language.
? Attitude
Be positive in dealings. It talks about your intension and attitude. A Man with positive attitude enjoys the confidence of colleagues and respected by everyone.
? Confidence
A confident person always wins. It talks about you and everyone prefers a self-assured person rather than a confused one.
? Punctuality
It is as important as all other key factors. In case of official meetings and public functions, people may not talk about your punctuality but everyone remembers it. Everyone tries to be in time when you organize a meeting and that is the indication of fact that your punctuality has influence over others. Everyone start considering you as a good time manager.
When we meet someone, initial few minutes are important. We have to follow protocol and even local custom in some cases. In case of a preplanned event, everything can be preplanned to create a long lasting impression.
# Self Introduction
Better not to be an introvert. Introduce Yourself! Make your presence felt by introducing yourself with passion. In many occasion there may be none to introduce you with the others. One need not wait for someone to help you. Be proactive and introduce yourself. People like such characters. It is better to walkout from the event rather than standing in a corner and feel miserable. Good introduction add up.
? Tell full name when introducing you and provide some information about yourself. It is better not to talk big about you during introduction. In the end, people will come to know the fact.
? Need not only focus on old friends or known faces. A new person may be a more interesting one.
? Do not forget to carry your latest business cards with relevant information.
# The audience
Do you have enough information about the person or crowd you have to intermingle?
It is important to prepare yourself for the event. If you are addressing an annual function of school than your dress code, speech, social etiquette will be very different that of cocktail party.
Be careful other wise you will ask for rotten eggs.
Try find out name of few other invitees or participants. This makes life little comfortable because there may be known persons and you know their attitude. This may help you to tune-up for the event.
Public speaking is an art and certainly not a cup of tea for many. But little effort definitely helps to enhance capability.
During an interview candidates also evaluate interviewer. It?s a two way process particularly for senior positions. To select a good candidate it is important how we present ourselves. Candidates are very sensitive if they are already guarding sensitive good posts. This year we have spent lot of money to prepare shockwave presentation for campus interviews.
Image once created will remain in the mind of people for many years.
# One to One interaction
? Try to collect necessary information about the person if the person not known to you
? Eye contact is Important. Make an effort to maintain eye contact so that he gives attention to you and listens to you
? Listen carefully when a new person is being introduced. Remember the name and profile of the person. Introduce yourself with some relevant information.
? Avoid misspelling or mispronounce names. If necessary, request the person to spell his name. Some names are really difficult to pronounce. Take Care - Some guys are sensitive.
# Most difficult situation
You are allergic to someone or a group of people but at the same time cannot avoid a meeting to ensure accomplishment of your objective. Be brave and smart. Preplan your Game Plan in advance.

# General
? Position and Status matters. Gender does not make much difference in today?s world but I prefer to be decent and follow the old tradition with womenfolk at workplace.
? When attending a client, guest, a lady, or a senior executive hold the doors open for them and make way for them to leave first. Behave in the same manner when both hands of a junior colleague are not free? in most cases they will look at you with respect. You may find one or two rogues and you know how to handle them.
? Help others inside a lift if you are near the control panel
? Be youthful and try to understand need of young generation when department is full of young talents. Cannot behave like my old bosses during my early days in profession. Simplest way to earn respect is to understand needs of people.
? Do not allow using foul language at workplace. Protest even if the other person is your boss. Teach him etiquette in a decent way.
Last words
I am not a big fan of Big B but I like the way he presents himself. He might have worked a lot during KBC and once again, he is in the limelight. Many of you might have seen his old movies. Most of you may remember Amitabh of Bombay to Goa, Dewar, Sholay, Mohabate etc. He changed his look and performed different roles at different time of his career. He is blessed by unmatched manly voice and good height. He has used these to become a star performer.
He has carefully changed his dress code from time to time. Watch him in advertisement of Cadbury Chocolate dressed in casuals - Sharing Chocolate with granddaughter.
Amazing personality. Very few can do it so perfectly but improvement is never impossible if someone is concerned about it. Fine-tuning is vital to tone with age, status and situation.
I am also admirer of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Nelson Mandela and my all time favorites are Lenin, Cuban President Fidel Castro, Martin Luther King, Swami Vivekananda, Netaji Bose and Sardar Patel.
