Bengali author Satyajit Ray's "Adventures of Feluda" is based on a young detective from Kolkata who idolizes Sherlock Holmes and often uses his methods for solving his cases. Along with him, assisting him on his cases are Topshe, his young Watson and Jatayu, a writer of thrillers.
The stories are narrated by a young Topshe and each one of the short stories are thrilling, action-packed and at the same time humorous. While Topshe, Feluda and Jatayu are all the protagonists there is no doubt in the reader's mind that Pradosh Mitter- or as he is more fondly called- Feluda takes precedence over the other two. There are 35 Feluda stories in all, separated into two volumes. Feluda's superior intelligence, Topshe's admiration for his brother and Jataya's naivety have been well portrayed by Satyajit Ray. While Feluda's cases serve as the mystery component in this book, Jatayu's presence provides many laughs.
Ray has been careful so as to not give too much information in the beginning, but just enough to make you want to keep reading. These short stories were mainly designed for children, but will be enjoyed by all. In order to sum it up, I will use Topshe's words to describe this book. "The Adventures of Feluda" is indeed, very "unputdownable".
