Due to my husband's many types of allergies, his skin will be dry, crack open and very painful itching. Though he take medicines for his condition but so far nothing on the market has yet being able to keep his skin soft and supple.
His skin specialist finally told me to use plain old Crisco all vegetable shortening or pure extra virgin olive oil. Plus his skin cannot have any cream with any form or alcohol in it.
I thought that vasaline would be better but no, this product he can't have either.
The Crisco was not bad at all. After he shower, I put it all over him from head to toe. Then he would put on socks to help with his feet. and then long sleeve soft 100% cotton pajamas. Then he would go to bed. Next day, his skin is soft. I do this about twice a week for him. He feels better and his skin does feels softer. In fact, I use it myself on my face once a week. It really beats, any expensive moisturizers I ever bought.
When I use the olive oil on him, I do add a few drops on aloe vera juice to it. That helps heals his skin some.
Some of you might think that Crisco would be too greasy and it might be if you have normal skin. It absorbs very well into the skin. On the plus side for me. After working and massaging my husband's skin, my hands have never been softer. I also use it on my feet when winter comes around and the dry heat in the house affects my skin.
One other thing, that might help some of you with dry skin, is just taking a bath in plain old oatmeal. It really helps softens the skin also.
Now, I call my husband the'Crisco' kid.
