Talk about animation, I am a fanatic! I just love them, not just for the sake of entertainment, believe me its much more than just that! If you havent watched a few of the Disney Pixar or Dreamworksmasterpieces like Toy-Story or Monsters Inc, you're definitely missing out! I always felt that an animated movie should utilize its power to create and rejuvenate things that are not essentially possible in real life or non-animated cinema, and Coralinefor once, does just that! Some exceptional background score, adds that haunting feel to the whole movie.
In search of justifying the 8.0 rating on IMDB, I went on to watch this movie, which just sucked me in from the boring yawns of an otherwise restless weekend! And Coraline is just another addition to the legendary animation legacy of awesome flicks this time from Laika Entertainment & Focus features.
Plot -
Coralineis an adventurous soul, a girl who under the influence of her adventurous hormones finds another world within the creepy doors of her new house! The new world is all better than her usual life, and she is amusingly glued to her amazing new find, only to realize that the new all better world of hers is bound with scary realities that surfaces within a few days. Will Coraline be able to get her and a bunch of others out of this lucrative trap, is the story all about!
Animation -
Right from the word go, the quality of animation just blew my mind! Just a glimpse of the starting credits gives you that "Ahhhhh so amazing" feel. From the minute details of shadows to some intense work in the middle of the movie, this has everything that adds up to a real attention grabber! Even if you find yourself lost in those rare sloppy scenes, the quality of animation and the thoughtful cinematography would keep you glued and excited.
Credits -
Directed by - Henry Selick (famed for The Nightmare before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach)
Writers - Henry Selick, Neil Gaiman
Based on - Coraline, a book by Neil Gaiman
Voices - Dakota Fanning as Coraline, Teri Hatcher as Mother/Other Mother, Keith David as the Cat.
A bit of googling reveal's the extensive use of "3D printing technology from Objet Geometries"(No idea what that means), which amounts to the massively impressive animation in the movie. Some amazing animation work, I found it even better than the likes of Wall-E and king fu panda, as its the new breed of animation called Slow Motion animation(the new Puppet like animation with some extensive animated tricks) makes the movie all the more exciting!
The Movie -
To be honest, I always loved the excitement and the "What's gonna happen next" feeling while watching movies, and though that factor mostly remained invisible in animation flicks, Coraline and movies likes "The nightmare before christmas", with that Mystery factor attached have the advantage over the normal animations, and probably the reason behind its popularity! The really powerful animation, and some thoughtful scripting, brings in that exciting little entertaintment factor in this one!
Best scenes -The most exceptional (worth mentioning scenes would be)
The Opening credits - Some very realistic insights into a different storyline and some amazing animation. Pay attention to the way the 3D animation comes into effect, with that haunting yet exciting feel to it!
The scene where Coraline gets out of the new house for the first time. Notice the 3D effect, where she is shown from behind the bushes, real animation, amazing 3D effects.
The jumping mouse circus (with some fantastic shadow animation and pretty realistic lighting) was a treat to watch!
The scene where Coraline realizes that the new world is a trap, and she tries to get out of it, but is punished for disobeying the Other mother.
The scene where coraline enters the Garden in the New World, amazing animation and amazing and thoughtful screenplay.
If you haven't watched it yet, do check it out! Its an out an out entertainer, not only for kids, for adults too! A perfect animated movie with all that it takes to be successful! And I finally agree with the rating! A deserving winner!
Overall -
A movie for all ages, no you dont necessarily need to be a kiddo to enjoy this one! If you are a fan of animated wonders, and enjoy a animated movie with your kids or a friend, this one's for you! And yes, it does have a "Moral of the story" to share! :) Enjoy this one, for its a real animated treat!
