Other day Flipkart did a fabulous thing to me. I had placed an online order for a Scrabble Board, and also made the payment through my credit card.(At the time of placing the order I noticed that Flipkart had in its stock two pieces of the type of scrabble board that I ordered). After acknowledging the receiving of the payment, Flipkart sent the message that the item would be delivered within 7 days. However, around 5 days after placing the order Flipkart sent me this sweet message that my order was being cancelled, as they had run out of stock immediately after receiving my order, and the money would be refunded within eight working days. I called up Flipkart and gave them a blasting. I asked the person that how could they run out of stock after receiving the order, when at least two pieces of the items were already there in their stock when I placed the order. I told the guy that ideally they should have kept one of the two items reserved for me as they had already taken my order and had made the commitment to deliver the same to me. Unfortunately the Flipkart person who took my call was just horrible. He just kept parroting only one thing - "Sir, I can understand your feelings. But actually the seller ran out of stock". Ultimately I realized that it was just meaningless to talk to the duffer, and disconnected the call. Read More

An open letter to both the Delhi Metro Rail and Paytm

Sir, On 20th March 2018 I transferred Rs 600 from my aishwaryasingh23tm account into my Delhi Metro Smart Card(Card No 66718992). And I received a message confirming a successful transaction, with the Operator Reference No being 15158473, and the aishwaryasingh23tm Order No being 4823216408. But later when I went to board metro from thr Ramesh Nagar Metro station, the Top Up could not be done. I again tried to do the Top Up after getting down at the Rajiv Chowk metro station, but again it did not work. I desperately tried to get the Top Up done next day also, and I even got involved Delhi Metro staff in it. But the staff also failed. The Top Up machine kept showing that no valid Top Up is possible on my card. Ultimately the Delhi Metro Rail people at the Ramesh Nagar metro station said that somehow the money has not been sent to the Delhi Metro Rail by aishwaryasingh23tm. I have sent emails to Delhi Metro at info@dmrc.org, but to no avail. And as far as aishwaryasingh23tm is concerned, I am completely confused about where to send any mail. Calling up aishwaryasingh23tm's Customer Care also failed to provide any help as I only kept listening to recorded voice that kept telling me to press this button or that button. This is my humble request to both the Delhi Metro Rail and aishwaryasingh23tm to do the needful. Regards Raja Basu Read More

What I cannot understand is that while now every second person has a Smartphone with WhatsApp facility offering Voice Message Option, then why we still depend on the "archaic" text message(Short Messaging Service or SMS) for communicating with one another when we are not resorting to direct calls. In fact when we send a message through WhatsApp, even then we mainly prefer sending the message through text message. We seem to forget that WhatsApp Voice Message can be a comfortable alternative for the text message. For example, a huge relief in WhatsApp Voice Message is that you do not have to ruin your fingers for typing the message, something that you face in the case of SMS. It especially becomes a huge relief when you have to send a long and elaborative message. Another significant benefit is that if you try to send a long message through SMS, then it sometimes tend to be an MMS(though this problem does not appear if you are sending the text through WhatsApp). But this problem is not there in WhatsApp Voice Message. And sending a voice message obviously takes lesser time than the time that you need for sending a text message. It is of course true that WhatsApp Voice Message has certain negative sides. For example, using WhatsApp Voice Message needs the use of Internet connection for both the sender and receiver of the message, and that adds to the cost, while Internet connection is not required by any of them while using SMS. And there may also be the issue of privacy. While you can compose a very personal SMS Or read one such message while being surrounded by strangers in a public place, you cannot do the same while sending or receiving a personal message through the Voice Message technology. But of course we will not think of completely avoiding text message. Rather we have to judge the Voice Message Option as a good alternative, and use it when there are no circumstantial problems with the same. Read More

I humbly request Twitter to enhance the number of characters(140) that it allows at present to an user for making a posting. While a number of Twitter users across the world - including notable personalities - are very much comfortable with the limit of 140 characters, it is nevertheless true that some people(including me) find this limit of 140 characters a bit inadequate to express themselves properly. And they therefore resort to Facebook "Status Updates" for expressing their views/opinions on issues, etc. Using Facebook "Status Updates" facility for micro-blogging or similar purposes is certainly a good idea. After all, what matters is the opportunity to express oneself, and not necessarily the medium. However, having said this, we can not wish away the fact that Facebook is primarily a Social Networking site, while Twitter is a "dedicated" Micro-Blogging site. Therefore, Twitter may spare some thought on whether it is OK to retain the limit of 140 characters, or whether it needs a revamp. Read More

I am really hurt by the behaviour of PageTraffic (www.pagetraffic.com), the Noida-based web solutions and digital marketing/public relations firm. I had worked for them for 3 months(August to October) in 2011, and though it was for a very brief period, the company was kind and gracious enough to issue me an experience certificate. I will always remain grateful to them for the same. However, around two months back this year I discovered that the certificate issued by them had got misplaced. When I failed to locate it even after a lot of searching, I decided to call up PageTraffic's HR Department to know whether they could re-issue a fresh experience certificate. I also told them it was OK if they had any problem in re-issuing the certificate, but in that case I would like them to categorically tell me that as well. They promised to look into the matter and get back to me later. Unfortunately till today I have not got any proper or concrete reply from PageTraffic. I have called them for around 5 times, starting from last week of April till middle of June, and every time they have said that they would look into the matter and get back to me, but I have never got any call for them. Neither they have assured me to issue a fresh experience certificate nor they have categorically said that they will not re-issue any fresh certificate. They have just kept telling me the same thing - "GIve us some time. We will look into the matter, and will get back to you". It was almost like a recorded message. I even sent them an email a few days back, and they have not shown the courtesy to reply to it as well. I did not expect such type of a behaviour from a reputed organization like PageTraffic. Remember, I had not insisted them for the certificate. I just wanted to know whether they could re-issue the certificate, and that's all. The only thing I wanted from them was a clear, honest and straightforward reply to my query. Was it too much to expect the same? Wasn't it a basic professional courtesy on their part to answer the same? Anyways, good luck to the company. I nevertheless had a great time working there and learnt a lot from them. And I will always remain grateful to them for that. Read More

It is not dependent on any state-of-the-art device or tool of science and technology, nor does it use any other tool. It only uses human skills like the power of communication/negotiation, empathy, rationality and common sense. And yet it manages to generate, retain and enhance mutual understanding and mutual appreciation among various nations of the world, eventually boosting peace, harmony and even co-operation among them. Diplomacy is that art that can replace the state of malice and hatred between two countries with that of mutual respect, thus replacing the warlike situation between them with that of friendship and camaraderie. It is that art that reflects the basic ethos of the ideal human civilization, which does not have any place for arms race and warfare. Read More

A Note of Caution for Mr. Arvind Kejriwal

Today I went to the office of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security at Mahipalpur, New Delhi for some official work(to collect my renewed Airport Entry Pass). I went to meet one Mr Parashar at the "Airport Entry Pass" section in the 1st floor. As Mr Parashar was not there, I asked the gentleman sitting at the desk beside Mr Parashar's desk about him. Unfortunately, the person replied to me in a very rude manner, completely without any reason. When I objected, he immediately said "I am from the Aam Aadmi Party". I was simply shocked with his use of Aam Aadmi Party tag as a power to boast of and justify his audacious behavior. Anyways, after having a semi-heated argument for some time I left the room. Later my work was also done smoothly by somebody else from that office. However, what has left me very shocked and surprised is how that person boasted of his connection with the Aam Aadmi Party. His attitude made it very clear that he has taken it for granted that if he is associated with that party, then he can unhesitatingly misbehave with somebody at the drop of a hat. Yes, it may be just a stray incident. It may also even be so that the person actually lied about being associated with Aam Aadmi Party. However, it is a known fact that a huge part of the Party's supporter base comprises people coming from a socio-economic background where the culture of sobriety and sophistication is not that strong, thus resulting in a harsh and rough behavior being a common attribute of these people(though many of these people are actually good at heart). Yes, there are a number of educated and suave people among the AAP members, but the actual support base of the Party is formed of people coming from the socio-economic background that I referred to right now. And I feel this has already started influencing the over all culture and idiom of AAP. Here we may refer to the overtly aggressive language that is often resorted to by even the educated and sophisticated members of the Party, including Mr Arvind Kejriwal himself. I just pray to god that Aam Aadmi Party's over obsession with(and over dependence on) the so-called "Aam Aadmi" - i.e. the so-called downtrodden people from the so-called lower strata of the society - does not turn the Party into a party of hooligans, who will dare to defy the basic norms of sobriety, decency and culture that every Govt is bound to protect. Mr Kejriwal must rein in his supporters and ensure that they do not dare to throw around their weight. Otherwise the same common people that he has vouched to serve will not think twice before kicking him out of power, in the name of that same democracy and governance that Mr Kejriwal claims to be the watchwords of his political mission. Today (3rd July 2013) I am back to my normal office duty after being a part of the " Banga Bhawan Control Room" from 19th June to 2nd July. This control room was set up at the "Banga Bhawan", West Bengal Govt's state guest house, to monitor the search and rescue operation of the tourists from West Bengal who were stranded in Uttarakhand. Some of us from the Office of the Resident Commissioner in New Delhi were handling the control room, while of number of other people, including our Principal Resident Commissioner Sir, had gone to Uttarakhand to handle the ground level situation there. It was a first-of-its-kind experience for me to be a part of the control room, which I worked for while handling the VIP Protocol duties that came my way. It was a mixed experience. It was a touching and charming experience when I would call up somebody and told him that we could trace his relative/friend in Uttarakhand, and he would be so happy and elated, and would thank us so profusely. And at the same time I had the painful experience of answering the call of an anxious person only to tell him that there was still no news about his friend or relative. The assignment was demanding, but I loved being a part of it. It was so different from my usual job profile of providing protocol service to dignitaries. I congratulate from my heart those families who have got back their loved ones. And my heartfelt condolences for the families whose loved ones have fallen victims to the devastation that will haunt our nation as a nightmare for many years. Read More

If you are a frequent flyer, then www.flightstats.com is a great and effective way (if not the best way) for you to keep a track of the flight schedules, i.e. the Scheduled Time of Arrival/Departure and Expected Time of Arrival/Departure. www.flightstats.com keeps making a real time tracking of every flight, and keeps informing people about any change (delay, etc.) in a flight's Scheduled or Expected Time of Arrival/Departure. The updating takes place at an interval of virtually a couple of minutes. All you have to do is to just log on to www.flightstats.com and type the flight name, like 6E 206, AI 701, etc. Or you can just type the flight name in Google (by accessing the Internet through any device including your mobile handset), and the www.flightstats.com information will appear at the very top. The best thing of www.flightstats.com is that you do not have to call up the office of the concerned airlines again and again, and at the same time you will get an information that may be more accurate than the one provided by the airlines people. Last but not the least, I have not been paid by anybody to advertise www.flightstats.com As a Protocol Officer I often have to keep track of airlines schedules. I have personally found www.flightstats.com to be very helpful in this regard, and wanted to share it with you people as I felt many of you would benefit from this information. Read More
