Wild at Northern Hay, Nilgiris Reviews

A rainy night in the forest
Jan 04, 2010 01:18 PM2346 Views

For this Christmas vacation, we made a sudden last minute decision to go to Masinagudi-Ooty. We were informed of a last minute cancellation at a resort in Masinagudi and decided to go for it. The resort is Wild at Northern Hays and is located at Singara Post (near the Singara Power house) in the middle of the Masinagudi forest at the foothills of the Nilgiri mountains.

The Masinagudi forests is located around 275 kms from Bangalore on the Ooty road. To reach this place, one has to take the route from Bangalore-Mysore-Nanjangud-Gundlupet-Bandipur-Masinagudi-Singara. The route passes through the picturesque Bandipur and Mudumalai forests. It is truly a beautiful route, as you pass in the middle of the forests amist greenery and wild life. We came across deer, elephants and wild boar in the forest. But unfortunately, couldn't take a snap as our driver was reluctant to slow down, fearing elephants attack, which are common on this road and photography on this road is officially banned. However we unfortunately could not get a glimpse of the tiger for which we had to take a safari!

On reaching Singara, we negotiated a terrible jungle road to reach the resort. The resort is located in a coffee plantation and is basically an old British-style bungalow. The main attraction of this place is the peaceful environment in the middle of a jungle, where you can relax and enjoy nature at its wildest best. Our cottage was called the Mudhouse and is built from bamboo and mud and is a little away from the main building. Built in the style of a village mudhouse, one need not expect air-conditioning (not needed anyway), luxurious ambience and the by the way, no television and newspapers either.

To our bad luck, the moment we reached there, the rain came pouring in torrents. It rained throughout the day making our trip a washout. One of the main attraction of the resort is the safari conducted, which takes us inside the jungle and we can get to see leopards, elephants, peacocks and bear. But thanks to the rain, the jungle roads would be difficult to negotiate and thus the safari was cancelled.

Rain, power failures, poorly maintained facilities at the resorts ensured that we had a dull and boring time at the resort. There is absolutely nothing to do at the resort and the resort staff seem least interested to help us in any way. The resort is unfenced and one cannot even take a walk, which anyway was not possible thanks to the rain. If you walk out of the resort area, you may meet an angry tusker! We heard of incidents of elephants entering the resort and throwing things around. That ensured that we spent a dark and scary night, wondering if an elephant would end up at our doorstep.

The facilities at the resort are poor, cleanliness doesn't seem to be given importance. Staff are mostly not available, no intercom facilities. Kitchen takes its own sweet time to prepare food. All meals are buffet style and choices are very limited and the taste is nothing to write home about. The manager didn't make any effort to keep us occupied. No common sitting area, no indoor games facilities, nothing to do. We spent a real immemorable night at the resort.

We decided to make an early exit and left for Ooty in the morning. Atleast that saved our trip and we were able to enjoy the Queen of Hill stations in the cold winter weather.

Even if there was no rain, the place definitely is not value for money. Fortunately, thanks to our proactive travel agent (lifeisoutside.com), we were able to get a prompt refund of part of our payment. My recommendation - if you want to do a jungle stay, better do it at Bandipur or at the Jungle Lodges and resort, definitely not this place. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.
