Horribly Pathetic Whirlpool Service in Faridabad
Mar 24, 2010 01:52 PM 16687 Views

We own a 340 ltr Refrigerator of Whirlpool which is still under warranty.

Two & a half months back in December 2009 the refrigerator stopped cooling and at that time the compressor was changed after many follow-ups. After changing the compressor, the refrigerator was making some freak noises as if very fast wind or storm were blowing inside it. Despite our insistence that it was very abnormal, the technician from Faridabad Service Centre said it is OK and he can’t bring factory-like perfection in a home-repair case. We refused to sign the job card for closure of complaint but the complaint was closed and no one bothered to check with us. Now, very recently on the evening of 17th March, 2010 the refrigerator again stopped working.

18th March, 2010, Thursday:

We lodged the complaint number HR 0310004569 at Customer Care Helpline number. The person, who visited us, told that compressor was not working and went back assuring that he will send someone with compressor. Nobody called or informed us about anything. After 4 calls from our side, we were told that compressor is not in stock and will be replaced tomorrow.

19th March, 2010, Friday:

Nobody called or informed us anything. Again after many calls, we were told that wrong type of compressor was sent by the company which can’t be fitted in our fridge and correct type will come tomorrow.

20th March, 2010, Saturday:

After many call from morning, a person came at 3 PM with a compressor which was different type from what was already fitted in refrigerator and replaced the compressor. Refrigerator was started at 5.30 PM but cooling was very low. We were told by the technician that probably some capillary was blocked and it will have to be taken to service centre. He assured us that he will report this to the service centre for further action.

21st March, 2010, Sunday:

Of course, how can an Indian customer expect any service on Sunday? 24x7 is a concept for USA & Europe only. It is a holiday – let the customer & service commitment go to hell.

22nd March, 2010, Monday:

Service Centre informs us that nobody updated the status of our complaint to them and the technician probably forgot to inform them about low cooling problem. We were assured that the same complaint number will continue as it has not been closed and they will send someone to pick the Refrigerator. No one comes during entire day despite 3-4 follow-up calls.

23rd March, 2010, Tuesday:

No one calls from Service Centre (It is customer’s responsibility to call & track, why should service Centre bother!). When we called, we were told that yesterday the Rickshaw Puller was too busy to visit and today his Rickshaw is in workshop for repairing, so he will visit us in evening to pick the refrigerator. We were informed at 4 PM that he will reach our place by 5.30 PM. Nobody comes… and nobody checks from us whether Rickshaw Puller came or not.

24th March, 2010, Wednesday:

We call the service centre again in morning. Nobody was aware whether Rickshaw Puller had gone to our place yesterday or not and nobody was bothered about the whereabouts of Refrigerator in case it was picked up from our home. We request for sending the Rickshaw Puller. He comes to our home alone. At home, only my mother & wife were present and he asked them to help in carrying & loading the Refrigerator onto his Rickshaw. After lot of persuasion, one Kabari-wala (scrap dealer) agreed to help loading the Refrigerator. After the Refrigerator is dispatched, I get a call from customer care asking about the status of our Refrigerator! We are informed by him that the complaint has been closed since long time (after the compressor was changed) and there is no fresh complaint pending from our side!

Now it is 8 days and we are waiting the repair and getting back of our Refrigerator. During the entire episode, the manager of service centre was never available on phone and there was never ever any initiative from service Centre to inform us of status. It has been a horrible experience for us, especially when the temperature is hovering around 39 – 40 degree C.

Fingers crossed for life

Had to go in for a new fridge as my steady and sturdy LG 285 ltr that had stood by me silently n efficiently through 3 house changes, was inadequate to support the needs of a growing family. and the Whirlpool 450L professional elite seemed to be the only fridge of its capacity to fit the available width space of 29".

Impressed by the review of astrofreak, we went ahead and purchased the 450L prof elite model.

The power cord seems to be of standard length for all whirlpool fridges of all capacities. despite this one being extra tall. just abt managed to fix it to the voltage stabilizer placed on top of the fridge, close to the back edge and it cant be moved even a mm fwd now.

The compressor would make quite a lot of noise every time it started [which was quite frequent], sometimes even wake us out of sound sleep in the middle of the night.the guy who had come for "installation" 2 days after the fridge was delivered n set into operation said the fan belt was loose/ tight, would settle down in a few months.[btw, this guy was all set to move the fridge all the way in front, when fully loaded, in order to get the product id, which we showed was already mentioned and a sticker stuck on the user guide, didnt bother to fill in the installation report n checklist n take it with him!].

When we got a call from the company abt a week later asking for feedback, and when we mentioned the noise, they said it was coz of the compressor being new, and would settle down in a couple of months. it has to an extent or maybe we r just used to it!

The fridge started smelling a few days later.an unpleasant garlicky odor, whenever the fridge door was opened, that could be smelled even 20 ft away! had never experienced anything of this sort in all the yrs of fridge usage-be it my LG frost-free of 6 yrs or the direct cool refrigerators of the last few decades that my family had used!

Our lifestyle or food habits had not changed in any way since, and couldn't understand what was causing it. Finally, when I could take it no more, [and found the time to call up the service help], realized that the phone number printed in the user guide [non toll free no. for my city] was incorrect n lead nowhere. Finally had to call up the dealer we bought the fridge from, and lodge the complaint thru' them.

They said the service guy would come over after taking an appointment. but to our shock, he arrived at our door next evening at 8pm, without any prior notice!

He knew abt the odor prob [the job sheet he had brought along read that]. He said the deodoriser wud cost us Rs.160 [he said it was a paid accessory and didn't come pre-installed with the fridge as I had thot it does in every basic fridge too!].

When we gave our nod, he opened a small box n took out a cartridge of some sort and proceeded to fit it inside the vegetable crisper! I stopped him saying that the the rest of the fridge was smelling and not the veg compartment- so he fixed the thing to the back of the top compartment of the fridge, below the chill tray, took our signature, the 160 bucks n was gone in less than 2 min!

When I recovered from the daze and looked at the opened case, I realised that it was a Freshonizer that he had fitted and not a deodoriser [I knew that the 2 were not the same- having read the user manual before n after buying the fridge and also from basic knowledge of the English language and some common sense! but the service guy was long gone, and we didnt have his Cell no, since he hadn't called before coming. This time, went to Whirlpool website and got the correct helpline no, and to my horror, got a recorded msg saying it was functional only on weekdays from 8 am to 8 pm! Sent an email in the meantime, to which I have got no response till date [10 days now].

Next morning, [Thurs] called up the helpline, which drew a blank. was a public holiday for Pongal.

Called up next day[Friday] and explained the situation to the lady there- she said she would send an engineer this time, who would come after calling only.

The fridge continued to smell, for obvious reasons!

Got a call finally on Monday afternoon, and the guy who came this time, wore a whirlpool t-shirt, but didnt look or behave like an engineer.even worse, looked into the fridge and told me that the deodorizer had been fitted and triumphantly pointed out the Freshonizer to me!

I lost my cool and shouted at him for not knowing the basic difference. asked him to call up his boss- he connected me to some woman- and she went on to try to convince me that nowadays, in the new models, deodorizer is called Freshonizer, and that both have the same function!

I had lost it by then, and gave her the basic definition of the two terms, as patiently and politely as I could in that frame of mind! she said her Manager would call me up by evening and look into the matter!

By then, I found the user manual, looked up the deodorizer page, and showed it to the confused service guy, the location and function [near the magic light]. he opened it up and realized that the deodorizer was indeed missing, and when he fished around with his finger, found it lodged in some corner deep inside. just a tiny 1"X1" flat strip of activated carbon in a 3"X2" slot! He sheepishly said that it must have got displaced during transportation. and that in other models of whirlpool fridges, it is located elsewhere, hence he didn't know.

But does that give him or his predecessor or the other woman he connected me to, the right to equate it to a Freshonizer, which has a totally different function, just on the basis that both the words end with "zer/ser"? Is it just a lack of knowledge of basic English in this country or just plain unprofessionalism of not knowing their job well enough?

The 1"X1" strip is doing its job now, albeit not to perfection.I presumed it maybe'coz of inadequate air circulation due to the glass shelves instead of wire racks as in my older fridges, so I have moved the shelves a bit forward [a few mm each] just to allow the cold air to circulate a bit better all around.

Whirlpool ENF 285 - Great product; Bad service
Oct 09, 2009 09:34 PM 16939 Views

OK, First the price: Rs.22, 000/- purchased in 1997-8, this model in no longer seen anywhere in the market, but what I have to say should be of help.

I bought this product after a good 20+ years of untroubled use of 250 liters, single door, Kelvinator refrigator [had the gas refilled once and, even repainted it once!] still going strong.

This, Whirlpool, refrigerator was a good replacement, slightly bigger, though the increase in size was mainly in the freezer compartment, a double door version. think the electricity consumption was very low, except till last year, which I will detail later.

About these 11-12 years of use, it is just as great as can be, cooling is great, even in peak of summers, ice creams do not become creams! and believe me baroda/vadodara has real good summers.

Cleaning is convenient, looks, both inside and outside, great, no problems with the body, no paint loss, rust etc., no audible sounds even when the compressor is working [have to feel for the slight vibration to know whether the compressor is working or otherwise.

Last year there was some problem with the thermostat, the technician from whirlpool came charged Rs.1800 but was of no use, repeated complain had no attendance. We are so dependent on the fridge so had a local technician replace the thermostat, but now the electricity bill is on the higher side. Now any complaints to whirlpool is just ignored! Other than this part had problems with the bulb only, but that was not much could replace by self and bulb was available in the market, changed thrice, again in the last one year only.

Am yet to replace 2 bottle racks which broke, not easily available in the market, the service station is not accessable, I don't blame them for the break, that too after use of more than 10 years, but it should be available more easily.

Guess we Indians are yet to learn to ask and get good service, for that matter give good service, think we should take pains to sue them for bad service, even if this involves a good amount of effort.

Have you ever heard of inanimate objects getting attached to something? Well my BPL Refrigerator was extremely attached to my previous home. Everyday at regular intervals I would see pool of tears, I was tired of its continuous weeping and thought of relegating it to my previous home. Now one would wonder why a Refrigerator would get attached to a house. It so happened that the arrival of my new fridge was timed with our Grihapravesh. The fridge forged a strong bond with the house. Can you think of life without a refrigerator? I cannot do without one. God always help those who help themselves, I got a lovely opportunity in form of my Hubby’s Birthday. We decided to gift him a Refrigerator this time too as the previous one was also bought on his birthday nine years back.

So we zoomed to my favourite store Croma, Vashi. After seeing several different refrigerators we zeroed on Whirlpool Professional FF Elite 45. We chose a 445 litre capacity fridge which is more than sufficient for a family of three. It comes in four colours Carbon, Graphite, Inox and Steel. Only Carbon was available for display. I chose it, as it would be a perfect contrast for the Red and Cream colour scheme of my Kitchen. I got the delivery next day itself and I was glad to get rid of my Crying Baby Fridge.

This model has spacious Freezer as well as the Refrigerator portion is of optimal size, just what I required. This fridge comes with a new technology called 6th Sense Tower Cooling System. When there is a change in the temperature outside and the load inside, the Powerful Sensors with Advanced Microprocessor automatically senses and makes cooling adjustments. I usually keep it on Auto Cool, so I don’t have to make adjustments everytime. There is a small panel on the freezer door to set cooling options. There are four cooling options Cool, Mid Cool, Hi Cool and Super Cool which you can set depending upon your needs. The settings are very simple, one doesn’t need to be a Techie to make them.

IF you do not open the freezer and refrigerator door for 24 hrs then it automatically goes into power saving mode. You can go out of station yet have a peace of mind with regard to power consumption. You have a party at home, you have run out of ice and none of your neighbor can provide you with the same, you need not panic, the Ice Accelerator comes in handy(yet to try this). It makes Ice super quick as well as the water gets chilled at a faster rate.

Another feature that I love is the Door Alarm that buzzes if any of the door is left open for two minutes. This is a boon to a forgetful person like me. The tiny blue indicator on the panel looks like a small bindi when it is reflected on the opposite glass window.

This model is a sleek one with good looks oops I mean finish. It has two handles one each for the freezer and refrigerator. I wonder why there are no locks on refrigerators nowadays. It has easy to clean surface. One major drawback I found in all the new Refrigerators was the absence of Mesh on the Compressor unit, easily accessible for rats to play havoc with the wiring. Now enough of superficial admiration lets peep( I hope this word is not copyrighted) inside.

The large freezer has a Flexichillsection where I can chill bottles( just remember not to chill bottles for a long time as they may explode) or push removable tray back to store other items. It is a freezer within a freezer. The two bins contribute to good storage space in the door. Lot of thinking has gone into designing the storage space.

Now comes the interior of the fridge. It looks or rather is very spacious, the entire space is washed with white light instead of the usual garish yellow one. Even the items stored inside will feel romantic ;) There are three adjustable Toughened Glass shelves which I hate. I preferred those grill shelves as they were easy to maintain. These glass shelves become dirty too soon and needs too frequent cleaning.

The Crisper where you store vegetables is big enough to store all the veggies that you may need for a week. I prefer two separate trays instead of a single big one but alas I can never have all that I want. I got stuck with a single monster of a tray. The Crisper is covered with a special sanitized silver Anti-Bacteria Coating that is rumoured to keep in check the bacterial growth upto 99.99%. It comes with a Freshonizer that absorbs any emissions from decaying fruits/veggies. It keeps falling everytime so I have relegated it on the floor and it may lie there forever and that forever is six months after that it needs replacement. Lo aur ek kharcha ..lol

The Chiller too has adequate storage and works very efficiently. I have started storing all the ground masala paste in it as I belong to an area where we suffer from severe power cuts.

Now comes the turn of those curvy doors. The four Bins on the door are designed in such way that there is a different storage area available for various storage needs. You can easily keep a two litre bottle or a half litre bottle without them falling every time you open the door. There are bottle holders which prevent the bottles from falling. There is an additional Can Holder which holds three cans but I have ustilised it to keep all the flavor and essence bottles. There is an additional Egg Holding Tray which holds upto a dozen eggs.

Have I left anything? There is a set of assorted containers, jugs, bottles which change colour upon cooling which comes as a freebie. Touchwood there have been no hiccups till now, lemme go and take a peek into my fridge now.

Lousy piece of appliance
Aug 28, 2009 02:14 PM 16628 Views

I purchased this less than 3 years ago and with 2 months it broke down. They promptly came, said 1 in a million failure and had to take it away to their workshop to fix it. Gave no standby despite assuring us of giving one. A week or so later they came back with refridgerator apparently fixing the problem. Few months passed, it failed. It wouldnt cool at all. Again after complaint, they attended to it by filling in the coolant gas.

Again after few months it began to erratically function, sometimes cool and sometimes wont. This time they made us buy their stabilizer (for Rs. 1200). And ofcourse that didnt solve the problem. Thats like filling a tooth to fix the arm fracture. This cycle continues every 2-3 months.

I recently registered a complaint again. First guy comes and takes a look at the fridge says he needs to refill the gas. Goes away never to return. When I call up the CC, they say it has already been closed. He registers complaint again, with a second reminder he says he will escalate it to the manager.

Now I get visits from 2 different engineers. Each of them just come take a look, tell me that they need to fill gas. and that they will inform the gas filling engineer. At every phone call I hear, 'He will come tomorrow', 'he will come at 11am', '1 pm', ' 3pm', 'he is in adyar, next is your place'. Nothing has happened. Now the engineer doesnt pick up his phone.

I have paid around Rs.20, 000 for this good for nothing refridgerator, which more like a shelf these days. Paid another 4000-5000 to for an extended warranty to extend it to 7 years total. Another Rs.1200 a stabilizer. Its just been 3 years and so much of expense and problems. But I am determined to have them fixed the problems for all the money I have paid.Incidently I still have my 30yr old Kelvinator refridegrator. Not one complaint, yet continues to work fine.

Whirlpool Purafresh Elite- Worst RO
Aug 27, 2009 11:49 AM 14030 Views

I bought Whirlpool purafresh elite almost 1 year back and since then I am having tough time. The RO is not working properly since then and engineer has visited my home several time.

Few parts have warranty of only 6 months and other 1 year and since mince is just over 1 year I had to shell out lots of money. The product is also faulty as the water keeps flowing(at a lesser speed) even after its filled and when complained about this whirlpool told me that a no return valve needs to be installed.

I want to ask why they didn't include it at the first place while manufacturing the product. The filters are so expensive to change that with a cost of 4 filter I can buy another Water purifier(although not a RO). This is the worst product Whirlpool has ever made.

However I will appreciate their customer service as when ever the complaint was logged I got a prompt reply. Please never buy Whirlpool RO.

Don't go for it
Aug 22, 2009 09:29 AM 13087 Views

When we bought an ICEMAGIC R27 Elite 6th sense??????? model (sr. no. INA060204067) in April'2006 from sales corner, Vadodara-Gujarat, it was for it’s looks and spacious design and strong interior.

Within few days, we found leakage from freezer and get accumulated at the bottom portion (inside of the freeze)On complaining to the customer care (250 Rs. visiting charges), the person who came from the service centre told us some bla bla (leveling is not OK etc..).

Within few days, cooling gone absolutely!!!!!!Again, On complaining to the customer care (250 Rs. visiting charges again ), the person who came from the service centre told us same bla bla. but no ractification done.

Very strangely we found that Compressor gone..We replaced the compressor (Rs 2500 cost). It was working fine for only few months..Again the same story, - leakage from freezer- cooling goneNow this time I have decided to throw away the this whirlpool product and go for some other reliable brand. My genuine advice to all, Don’t go for this model…..

Whirlpool service sucks
Aug 10, 2009 12:04 PM 13633 Views

I bought whirlpool 220L single door fridge last year. but the fridge started showing cooling problem in less than a year. I had raised this request with in warranty period. Still no action is yet taken for last one month. I am still in the process of chasing this. All the rquests I raised were closed saying some part of my fridge was replaced. Though none of the part is yet replaced and I am still facing cooling problems.

I was given a satisfaction code everytime I re raised the request which I haven't provided to service guys. But that just seems to be a formality. I feel like throwing my current fridge and buy a new LG one. Whirpool provides worst service poosible. Its just there to trouble you.

NEVER GO FOR WHIRPOOL PRODUCTS. THERE SERVICE SUCKS.

PS: I am gurgaon resident where whirlpool has it service center. So you can understand if a guy in a city of service center is chasing his problem for last one month and yet unresolved, how much its going to take for others.

Poor Quality, Noisy, Inadequate Service
Jul 17, 2009 05:34 PM 16804 Views

I have been using Whirlpool Deluxe 450 Ltrs. refrigerator since Apr'2008, bought it from Next Lajpat Nagar New Delhi. Following is the feedback:-

1) The refrigerator that was delivered to me had a faulty door. The door did not close completely. One had to push it really hard to close it. After lots of follow-up the company replaced it.

2) Makes too much noise. Even after the service guy tried twice to fix it, no respite.

3) The quality of plastics is pathetic. The handle got broken twice in a year.

4) Service people took 1.5 months to replace the handle because they said that it was not available.

5) It takes very long time for the ice to be freezed.

In breif, it is a horrible product with bad service. I strongly advise people not to buy this refrigerator. You can get much better product with decent service by spending few thousand extra.

Whirlpool Icemagic service issue solved
Jul 10, 2009 08:26 PM 17298 Views

The 2 - door icemagic stopped cooling after about 3 years' service. We had taken an extended warranty for 7 years so we were covered under it, except that we were charged for a worn out drying tray ( Rs.750/- WHEW !!). The service man attended within a day of our complaint.

WIthin 10 days the fridge developed another problem and the serviceman attended promptly again. We were told that the Tecumseh compressor had packed up and it would take several days to replace it. The kitchen was fast slipping into chaos and, with it, our hairs were beginning to stand on end. No fridge ?!! Huh?

We pressurised them to act fast. Somebody from there told us to look up the web to locate company personnel since the compressor had to be shipped to Mumbai from Faridabad if it was not in stock. That's when I came across all these shocking stories of negligence posted by many Whirlpool customers. Not one positive comment and I was beginning to think is this company so back-of-beyond ? Our hopes were sinking as 2 days passed with conflicting replies frmo their service agents. Finally on the third or fouth day the compressor arrived and the fridge was put back into operation. No charges for the new compressor, except for Rs.200 for copper tubing.

Next day again the fridge developed another snag as water was leaking from somewhere. Ring ring !! The service man attended same day ! Two weeks now and everything's fine.

So, thankfully none of the negative posts were proved true for us. They are not so bad, guys !

Three faulty replacements in 2 weeks
Jun 27, 2009 03:37 PM 16866 Views

I bought 450 DX Professional Steel FF 45 B fridge last year in August. I have a very interesting story to share. When I bought this fridge and delivery arrived, we realised that it was not cooling and a major part was faulty. We reported to shopkeeper for exchange and he informed us to go to service station.

So, we approached Service station and paid additional amount by cheque to take the Carbon one because no other option was available. We brought it home to again realise that this one is also faulty. This time there was no gas in it. We again asked for exchange and still the desirable model was not available. Finally . we had to go to warehouse to pick up a one which we never wanted but had no choice. We again had to pay extra for something that we never wanted.

Anyway, this one arrived and started with basic function that is cooling but was sounding as if we were running a local made generator in our basement. I was so fed up with the exchange process that I asked Service guy to come and fix it. He came and tried as some screws are not at proper place. It worked for a month and again started crying. For last one year, we have now used to this sound that keeps coming and keep our kitchen vibrant. It also tells us that fridge is atleast working.

In the whole process, I would say that Whirlpool guys were very cooperative but I am extremely sad to the see the worst class quality and wonder how such faulty pieces were able to come out of production line. Ultimately a customer has been suffering after paying Rs. 34500/- and bought a model that he never wanted to buy.

I hope Whirlpool managment would intervene and do something at quality front. I have never seen such worst production quality in my life time.

Regards,

Rajeev

Never go for whirlpool
May 30, 2009 12:16 AM 18181 Views

I am a distraught owner of whirlpool Iceberg from the last 4 years. We previously owned Hyderabad Allwyn which gave absolutely no problem for 20 years! But since165L was not enough we decided to buy a new big refrigerator. While looking around we found that Whirlpool is better than other refrigerators primarily because of interiors and accessories. Everything inside can be removed and cleaned including the attachments in the freezer. The toughned glass interiors are easy to wash and are strong. However unfortunately these are the only things you can judge in the shop. Durability and service you experience only after the purchase.

Barely one year had passed since our puchase and the refrigerator stopped cooling. We called the service center and the next day they sent an engineer who told us that the compressor has to be replaced. Since the product was under warranty within a week they replaced the compressor and charged only service charges.

However after 14 months or so the refrigerator's cooling capacity decreased and everything inside started to spoil. We again called the service center, they sent an engineer who told us that there is oil in the filter. I was told that the refrigerator's compressor was throwing oil which was sticking in the filter thus blocking the gas circulation and preventing cooling. We were charged around Rs 1300-1400 for changing the filter and re-filling the gas. However barely after 6 months the refrigerator stopped cooling again and the engineer again told us that compressor has thrown oil in the filter. I asked him to replace the compressor as I thought the problem is recurrent and the compressor is faulty. However they refused to change the compressor and again charged us Rs 1300-1400 for replacing the filter and gas. Also after the replacement the refrigerator started making lot of noises. We complained to the service center but they didn't bother. Now again after 15 months the cooling has gone down. Now I am thinking of disposing off the refrigerator.

I also came to know that my aunt who had bought the same model and one family friend who had purchased the same model faced problems within two years of their puchase. I believe there is some serious problem in whirlpool compressors and I do not recommend anyone to go with whirlpool.

May 26, 2009 04:21 PM 17556 Views

I have bought Whirlpool Master mind 26 Elite on the 27th Mar-09 from Pai International Indira Nagar BangaloreRefrigerator worked well for the first one week post that ice started getting formed in the refrigerator section of the freeze.I have register complaint on the 6th May -09 BG0509001055. Request please never ever think of buying any Whirlpool product...in less than 1 month freeze started mal functioning... service is very very poor you will feel cheated.

Whirlpool 280 litre vs 310 litre ???
May 03, 2009 09:57 PM 19580 Views

I had this thought and I was wondering if anyone did a real check onwhat does a Whirlpool refrigerator consume in reality ? the BEE labelshows that most models in the 280 to 310 litres consumes about 1- 2units of electricity I am told that the practical world isdifferent.

Wondering if anyone who has these models - Mastermind 30 (280litres) or the 310 litre Professional series has done an observation ofthis or has an approximate idea of how much these consume on a dailybasis, assuming normal use of perhaps 20 openings of the door and beingmoderately loaded..

I would love to go for 310 thinking if my requirements might increasein teh future however since Refrigerator is the only 24 X 7 deviates connected all the time (for an average indian family) I wanted tomake sure am not going to repent for the electricity bills :-)

Could someone tell me if Whirlpool has launched their 5 star rated refrigerators in India like Samsung did recently ?

Thanks

Alex

Whirlpool 320 L FF Refrigerator, after 9 yrs
Apr 21, 2009 06:16 PM 20940 Views

I own a Whirlpool 320 Litre, double door, Frost Free (FF) Refrigerator, (model no: WRN32RGG3), purchased in Jan-2000 from Sri Surya Electronics, Gajuwaka, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. My earlier fridge, a simple single door Kelvinator began giving problems after almost 10 yrs of use.

My new whirlpool cost me Rs. 24, 000/-. It was a big amount and none of my friends had such a huge fridge in those days. I chose the model for its large freezer compartment, where I could stash non-veg items, especially sea food available so abundantly in Vizag. The warranty for complete refrigerator was for one year.

What is a Frost Free refrigerator?

In a conventional fridge the evaporator tubes are coiled around the freezer compartment, located at top inside the fridge. It absorbs heat inside the fridge and causes moisture to condense on the tubes. This causes ice build-up, which can slowly reduce efficiency of heat transfer, as pure ice acts like an insulator.

Moreover this also causes the humidity inside to be high, thus likely to damage vegetables stored inside due to frost. In the non-frost free models one had to remove ice by manually switching off the supply or pressing the defrost switch. This defrost switch shuts down the compressor and allows ice to melt. When the temp inside slowly rises after ice is melted, the thermostat contact closes back again and the compressor is made on.

In a Frost Free (FF) model the evaporator coil is hidden in a separate chamber and a fan is provide to suck in hot air from the fridge and blow it over the evaporator, cool it and then blow cold air into the fridge, in the process all moisture is condensed at the coil of evaporator and is prevented form getting inside the fridge. This avoids frost formation inside the fridge and keeps humidity low.

The condenser coil in a conventional fridge can be see located outside at the back, painted lack. In a FF refrigerator the condenser coils is embedded in the walls at the sides of the fridge, thereby not allowing water to condense in between the insulation and steel outer body o the fridge.

If the outside of your FF fridge feels warm to touch, it means the fridge is healthy and doing its job.

Breakdowns

My first breakdown surfaced at 10 months of use. One could call it a minor fault. The inside bulb got fused. I had no problem contacting the local Whirlpool service and they attended to the complaint promptly. The lamp was replaced free as my fridge was still under warranty. While changing the lamp I noticed that the translucent plastic panel in front of the lamp had got melted a little and had deformed, so it was not snapping back in position. It was somehow put back in place and since it was a minor problem, I did not pursue that with whirlpool further.

The second breakdown was failure of the door switch at 5 years (Oct-2005). The door switch has twin isolated contacts, one for switching on the inside lamp when door is open and the other for switching off air circulating fan when either of the twin doors is opened. It cost me a total of Rs 500/-(Rs 150 for the switch + 350 as home visit charges.)

Then came the failure of the electromechanical defrost timer at 6th year, in 2006 which set me back by Rupees 2500 approx. Later the blower fan motor also failed which cost 1800 rupees. One thing that I liked about whirlpool service, in spite of all the breakdowns is the prompt response. They charge Rs. 350 for a house visit in addition to cost of spare parts replaced. If the problem is not solved in one visit they would come multiple times till problem is rectified and at no additional visiting charge.

Since I am an electrical engineer I did some study of the circuit and found the electromechanical timer to be its weakest link and costly too. Since there is a lot of moving parts in it, it is prone to premature failures. It is a kind of shaded pole motor with a ferrite magnetic core, which rotates and drives the timing gear. Its contact opens every 8 hours and then the defrost heater get energized to melt the ice that is formed on the evaporator coil located behind the freezer cubicle. When all the ice is melted and temp has risen sufficiently another thermostat contact closes, which gives supply to the compressor and fan circuit once again.

The electromechanical defrost timer can get noisy after a bit of wear and tear, which is normal. The timer began malfunctioning again at 8th year, in 2008 end. The plastic timer gear got worn out and was slipping. The contacts were not opening and once open they were not closing back. I used parts from the older timer and rectified it on my own. I have spent close to 6000/- rupees on spare parts so far. I hope Whirlpool has improved the design and have made their new fridges more reliable.

Performance of 190 dlx whirlpool refrigerator
Dec 10, 2008 04:03 PM 19959 Views

I have been using whirlpool model 190 dlx refrigerators it has got the following good features

1) good asthetics

2)thermostat setting from out side , need not to open door to set cooling .the idea is good as we save the space in the fridge and the life of thermostat also increases as no direct moisture.

3)the door shelf and other body shelves are easily openable and flexible

4)The body shelf has an shelf which is having a detachable center cavity thus bigger vessels can be kept if required by removing the detachable portion

5)The delicate vegetables can be kept in separate bowl in the vegetable tray

6)the defrost button is also placed outside so no hassle in opening the door , bending down and pressing the button etc.

7)The chiller tray wherein the milk cover etc is placed has got an door thus closing the other portion of ref from smell etc

8)the lug height is also very advantageous as sweeping/cleaning beneath becomes very easy

The disadvantages are as follows

1) the chiller tray occupies lot of space

2) the cooling is very high, if not loaded fully it may over freeze

3) the shelfs are delicate can break easily

4) the humidity control is not that effective in veg tray

5) the knob to control thermostat is bit difficult to operate.

6) Some time water drips while defrosting to the sides.

7) The gasket develops gap after 2 -3 years then we can even change it.

11 days and no customer service...NEVER BUY!!
Oct 21, 2008 02:16 AM 14950 Views

11 days since I gave my complaint to whirlpool and these people dont even bother to fix my refrigerator. Each time I call them they say it will take 3 more days. If I call them tomorrow again they'll say 3 more days for sure. They made me buy extended warranty but they dont care to provide any service. If I wudnt have taken their warranty I would hav got it fixed by now from some local mechanic. But iv paid for this warranty which is not worth at all.as im supposed to get it fixed for free, but they dont give a damn to respond. Jerks provide the cheapest customer service on earth. Iv had problems with this thing since the very day I bought it. This time the PCB is dead. And these guys are hesitant to fix that for me since its costly and they cant charge me for it since its covered in warranty.

So.my sincere advice to all my fellow citizens here.MAKE A WISE CHOICE.OPT FOR SOMETHING ELSE. I wish Moutshut would grow and reach a point where such a review would shutdown any company's sales.

I wish to spread my word of advice to as many people that coudl bring about a drastic drop in Whirlpool's sales that they go bankrupt and stop dreaming bout being a Household Appliances company. They dont deserve to be one. They just SUCK big time.

CHEAPEST Customer Service ever!
