All about Contacts

Contacts Lens, is not only a favoured alternative to cumbersome spectacles for sportsperson and glamour conscious, it also improves depth perception, reduces image distortion, enhances peripheral vision(sides, above and below) which spectacle frames tend to block and provides better vision for severe short-sightedness/long-sightedness. Impervious to fog, rain and perspiration, it’s ideal for sportsperson(with safety goggles in water).

The brainchild of Leonardo Da Vinci(1508), the first glass contact lens was developed in 1887. Now obsolete, ‘hard’ plastic contact lenses came in 1948. But these hampered oxygen supply to the eye(cornea lacks oxygen supplying blood capillaries). Then, the 1970s saw comfortable ‘soft’, plastic gas-permeable contact lenses arrive and now, ‘disposables’ are in vogue since 1990.

Water integrated with gel-like plastic comprises the snug, easily adaptable ‘Soft lenses’. Only, dust and natural protein deposits from tears tend to accumulate, and negligence to cleanse these deposits weekly leads to discomfort, cloudy vision and infections.

‘RGP(Rigid Gas Permeable) lenses’ are semi-soft oxygen transmitting lenses. Silicon based, these firm lenses maybe uneasy initially but are easier to clean and handle, do not tear or dehydrate, resist deposit accumulation, unlikely to harbour bacteria and long lasting. Less maintenance than for soft lenses, but RGPs tends to slip out with excess lubrication(crying, watering). And with oxygen supply being limited, they shouldn’t be worn constantly. Soft and RGP lenses range between Rupees 1200 to 1500.

Disposable lenses are soft lenses sans maintenance, the safest and healthiest option today, handy as substitutes and during vacations. Available from daily to monthly wear, in packs of six or twelve pairs, they are discarded when their time expires, which is before deposits can accumulate. Monthly disposables cost Rs 3, 200 for a year. Expensive, but maintenance expense is averted. Note: even disposables should be removed every night.

Adapting to a lens takes about a week. Pain or extreme discomfort indicates an improper fit. While inserting, pull down lower eyelid and gently slide in the lens off the tip of index finger onto white of the eye. Look down, close eyes and the lens will centre itself. A drop of wetting solution inside the lens makes initial attachment easier. Use clean dry hands as the lens sticks to the wettest surface.

For RGP lenses, pulling the eyelid taut to outer side and blinking will pop the lens out. For soft/disposable lenses, moisten eyes with wetting solution, looking up, touch and slide the lens down and outward, pinch lightly between index finger and thumb, remove. If the lens folds up, rub gently with multi-purpose solution till edges separate.

If the lens curls up, lodged inside; sit with a mirror flat on the table, look down into the mirror, moisten eye with wetting solution and pulling away one eyelid at a time, examine carefully and remove.

While RGP lenses can’t flip inside out, ‘cup-and-saucer’ test verifies if the soft lens is inside out(inverted). Observe edges closely, a ‘U’ with the edges pointing straight up(cup) is correct; a ‘U’ with the edges flared out sideward(saucer) indicates it’s inverted.(Inverted insertion is only uncomfortable, not harmful.)

In case of dropped lens – Shining a flashlight at floor level will make the lens glint. Cover the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner with a nylon sock and vacuum, trapping lens in sock! Always insert / remove lenses above a dark towel.

For crisp, clear vision, better eye health and maximum comfort …

Never share or sleep with your contacts.

Never re-use disposable lens or lens care solutions(after designated period/expiry date).

Confirm compatibility with contact lens prior to using eye drops/medication.

Avoid contacts in presence of fumes or vapours(chemical laboratories, household cleaners – lenses absorb certain fumes).

Guard against contact with cosmetics, soap etc.

Prevent contamination of lens solution - never touch the bottle’s tip to any surface(even the lens or case), always keep covered.

Handle one lens at a time(avoids mixing left and right) with clean dry fingertips(not fingernails.)

Store immersed in solution in designated lens case(replace if damaged) at room temperature.

Never use lenses when suffering from any eye-infection.

Visit the optician regularly.

Cosmetics and lenses…

Use hair spray/perfume before inserting your lens(or shut eyes).

Put on lenses before makeup.

Close eyes when dabbing powder around eyes.

Use gentle, unscented, water-based eye-cosmetics labelled “hypoallergenic, ” or “for sensitive eyes”.

Use pressed(not loose) powder eye shadow.

Apply eyeliner only on outer edge of eyelid.

Remove lenses before removing makeup

Avoid creamy/oily makeup removers.

Never apply eye makeup when in motion.

Ensure good, healthy vision with routine examinations. Switch to contacts, but save your faithful spectacles for emergencies!

Some Contact Lens Safety Tips for Lens users
Jul 11, 2006 01:29 PM 9910 Views

Hello to all

And special hello to those who use to wear contact lenses and here are some safety tips for you for a safe, secure and happy living with contact lenses.

This review is a result of my search of some safety tips for one of my nice friend, she use to wear lenses but not so happy with her lenses rather she prefer to wear glasses but she has to start using contact lenses due to many reasons, her eyesight  is not well since a long time and due to regular wearing of glasses there was some spots of frames & glasses started developing on her nose as well as round her eyes which seems not well for her beautiful personality as she is very attractive in appearance and only due to glasses her overall personality is effecting drastically and handling glasses in also not so easy as we all know, so all these things compelled her to try contact lenses and after using lenses for sometime she again started new problems. After some discussion I ask her not to worry and better visit a eye specialist and have some advices n suggestions with him and with some contact lens users, simultaneusly I told her that I will try to find some good and useful stuff on internet, as a result of which I collected below mentioned safety tips for her as well as for everybody who is using contact lenses in their daily routine. I hope you people find these tips useful for you.

Guys who are using lenses, please dont worry about the tips coz many of the tips are useful for you also. So read these tips and live happily with your contact lenses. So find this information useful for all my friends, therefore writing this review to share the collected information with all of you. Even if you are not using contact lenses or not evn glasses you can forward this information to your friends, nears n dears, if you find it useful in some respect.

Here I am giving some tips & product information to all contact lens user, both guys n gals. Some of the tips are meant for only gals when it comes to applying makeup safely around the eyes.

  1. Wash your hands properly with clean water prior to putting in each contact and then apply makeup.

  2. Don't try to expose your eyes to water while wearing contacts.

  3. Take out the lenses before you remove your makeup. Avoid greasy or oily makeup removers as they may build up on the contact lenses.

  4. Better avoid getting too close to the eye with any type of makeup.

  5. Try to use makeup that is hypoallergenic to avoid sensitivity, moreover use only well known trusted brand names.

  6. Always use water soluble makeup.

  7. Don't use waterproof mascara as it may permanently adhere to the lens. Also avoid mascara that contains volume building fibers.

  8. Avoid eye shadow that is powder. Use only gel, liquid or cream. Never use eye shadow that is frosted or iridescent. These may contain oyster shells or mica.

  9. Do not use eyeliner that is directly drawn on the rim of the eye. Keep all eyeliner pencils sharp enough so the wood doesn't scratch the surface of the eye.

  10. Use pressed powders.

  11. Don't use hairspray or other aerosols if you have already put in your lenses. Allow all hairspray to settle before walking into a room that has just been sprayed. Many times hair products can irritate the eyes and they are more susceptible now to problems because you wear contacts.

  12. Keep all nail polish remover and perfumes away from your contacts.

  13. Never swap makeup application sponges or brushes with your friends and wash your application brushes frequently

  14. Don't put on make up if your eyes are already red or swollen, this will only irritate them more.

  15. Beware of flaking mascara because pieces of nylon can reach the eye and never purchase mascara refills.

  16. Never use saliva or water to thin cosmetics.

  17. Never swap your contacts with your friends.

  18. Never wear the contacts if they become cracked, chipped or torn.

  19. You may want to use an eye wash to remove any excess oils from makeup residual? Replace your cosmetics every six months to avoid bacterial growth.

  20. Never apply any toye eye makeup while in a car or worse yet while driving, not even when you are in motion or moving.

If you follows a few common sense ways of putting on makeup properly & purchasing the right products, there should be no problems with the contacts, or maintaining eye health and safety. So take care of your eye as much as you can.

All the very best for happy and safe life with contact lenses.

Thanks, Regards n lol

Are you one of us? When you're caught outside in a romantic April shower, and the grass and the trees are drinking it in happily, do you say unkind words about the rain as you wipe your glasses on your shirt? When you happen upon snow falling ever so softly to the ground, do you lower your head and ram your way out of the gay frolicking people who are building snowmen and sledding downhill? As you walk through a cold, clear, starlit winter night, does every breath you exhale leave a lovely fog on your spectacle lens? On a sunny bright summer day. but you get the idea. I'll spare you from more poetic detail.

If you long to enjoy the elements, dress for a party, read books, and so on, without your glasses getting in the way, sliding off your nose, or getting misplaced and lost, then contact lens might be the answer for you.

I know nothing about hard contact lens, but I should think most people can wear soft disposable contact lens. These are flexible, thin lens that will not feel alien in your eyes. There are all sorts of soft lens - you can even wear them if you need bifocal lens or have astigmatism.  They come in all sorts of varieties, daily disposables, two week disposables, and monthly disposables. They come in colors if you like those. They seem affordable to me, but they'll set you back more than your faithful average pair of glasses. I don't know if they are relatively more expensive in India, as I've never had to  buy some there.

I was first fitted with contacts when I lost my last pair of glasses(still missing - if you find a large dorky pair of glasses with scratches on the lens and loose screws, and can get me to admit they are mine, there's two dollars in it for you). I had to drive to the optician's wearing my prescription sunglasses. Things were looking dark(they usually do when you wear sunglasses at 6 PM on a cloudy day). But then the optician popped the lens into my eyes with ease, and it seemed like a miracle that I was able to see clearly right away!

Don't let me mislead you - putting in contact lens isn't a piece of cake in the beginning. The first day by myself, I tried every way in the brochure the doctor gave me, to insert lens into my eyes. No matter what, my eye was downright unhappy when it saw this finger with a foreign object on it approaching. There was no way it was going to stay open. I did finally trick it into looking another way when I put the contact lens in - this works like a charm. I take about half a minute to put both lens in now. Taking them out is even easier. So, expect a few delays in the first few weeks, while you learn what's the best way for you. The important thing is that they feel comfortable once they are in. If after a few days of wearing contacts, you still feel the contacts uncomfortably in your eyes, or worse, if your eyes are dry or hurt and water, you should make sure you're doing everything right. You might need eye-lubricating drops. Always have a pair of eye-glasses as well, so that you can wear them on the days when your eyes feel irritated, or when there is conjunctivitis going around(more on that later).

Your contacts will need some loving care - but not much more than glasses. If you are taking your lens off at night, you'll need to clean them and let them soak in a bath of contact lens solution every night(daily disposables are an exception).

Let's come to the more disagreeable part about contacts - are they safe? Nobody ever talks about this - atleast nobody did to me anyway. I had to do a little digging into the'Acuvue' website to find that there is greater risk of eye infections with contact lens than without. This risk is even greater if you wear your contact lens through the night. Another downside which I didn't know about till it happened to me - a contact lens can get lost behind your eyelid, especially if you are a novice. Nobody ever tells you about it! I found nothing on the official sites of contact lens makers. Google saved me when I typed'Contact Lens Lost in Eye - Help!' Apparently that is a common occurrence, so people have a solution to this problem. Just read up on it before it happens to you, and rest assured that your lost lens cannot make it's way to your brain, it's just lurking behind your eyelid, and can be manoeuvred out quite easily. Thirdly, I have a lurking fear that wearing those lens, however thin, might not be so good for the eyes in the long term. I'm almost in denial, for I've never Googled(uncharacteristically for me, for I love to find the negatives) about the cons of'con'tact lens. My advice is, if the lens in your eyes don't feel right to you, then go back to the non-intrusive glasses. Atleast you can be sure they're not scratching your delicate eye lens.

Still, I wear them. They allow me to face rain and snow with more pleasure(or atleast with less crankiness). They make it nicer to kiss babies and other kissable ones. It feels liberating to not have my glasses making a dent on my nose. At times I almost forget it's something artificial in my eyes that's helping me see.

'I can see clearly now the pain is gone'(The pain of wearing glasses, that is).

Eye Care - Mayekar
Oct 09, 2005 12:31 PM 10420 Views

I dont know if this is the right place to put this review but when I read Wear Your Glasses    By: anuj_bhatnagar22 I felt that you'll need to know my experience as well. Even I would suggest wear glasses but still if you would like to play a gamble try V.A. Mayekars. Who knows even you would be lucky like me. Read on & give it a try.

V. A. Mayekar's are well known opticians in Thane, Mumbai.

V.A.Mayekar was started in 1959. They now have branches at Mulund, Shivaji Park, Dadar, Borivli, Lalbaug & ofcourse Thane.

Well I wouldn't know if you'll feel I was lucky while dealing with Mayekars. But common sense says that lady luck knocks only once or twice or maybe thrice but not always.

The fact that I have been satisfied dealing with Mayekars is there dedication & attitude towards their customers that makes me feel lucky.

Then

A couple of years back I had planned to do away with my specks & opt for contact lenses. The biggest question I had was WHICH optician to approach. As investing around Rs 1200 was a big thing for me as I was just a student then & was buying them with the little pocket money I had saved over a few months. Finally rellyin on fate I decided to give V.A. Mayekars a try.

I approached V.A. Mayekar optician's THANE. Dr Sebastian, the optomerist was a thorough gentlemen. Unlike other businessmen, he first tried to find out why I wanted to go in for lenses. Was it because I thought it was fashionable to have one or was it because I wanted to woo girls & so wanted to get rid of my specks or was I really in need of the lenses. He even advised me to continue with specks but I was adamant that I wanted lenses.

Knowing I was a student I was given special student discount - around 40%. Within a few days I tore a lense while cleaning. I was given a free replacement without any questions asked. In about three months time, suddenly my eyes started reddening & I was no more comfortable with those lenses. I felt my number had changed & so went to Mayekars once again. I got a free eye check done & even though the number was same I was given a new pair of lenses FREE of cost. Finally after about 9 months I thought I had enough & decided to do away with the lenses as my eyes had now started to ache & the redness now stayed for around an hour after I had removed the lenses. I was sad as I felt I had wasted my money.

To my surprise I was offered an option to buy any specks & have the money that I had paid 9 months ago adjusted towards the cost of the specks. Imagine getting 3 pairs of lenses to use for 9 months free of cost. Its not about money but the service that I got from V.A. Mayekar which has made me write a review recamending them. They made me feel special just by their commitment & effort to ensure that I was comfortable with what I use & not just do business & earn profits.

Now

Once again just a month ago I visited Mayekers after around 6 years & to my astonishment every one working then was still there & they all recognized me by my name. Not to mention the respect & the service that I got. I even got a free glass replaced as one of the glass broke while the frame was being replaced.

This is what I call service. Keep up the good work Mayekar's. You'll will surely go a long way.

Wear Your Glasses
Jul 04, 2005 01:56 AM 13425 Views

Why am I asking you to wear your glasses? Well, look at my picture on the left hand side panel. I am wearing my glasses and although I know that I do not look good in my glasses, still I prefer glasses to contact lenses. This debate has been raging in my circle of friends for quite some time now. What should we wear – lenses or glasses? I vote for glasses. Some girls I know will vote for lenses. But at the outset of the review, let me declare that contact lenses are not a long-term solution for your eye care needs.

Thanks to our advertising industry, the contact lens manufacturers have been able to create a giant market for their product. I recall recently watching an advertisement of a contact lens brand(Bausch and Laumb or Acuvue? Sorry, I don’t remember the brand name) where a young Cricketer gets bad performances whenever he wore his glasses but then starts belting the bowlers all over the stadium after wearing contact lenses. Amazing isn’t it? This advertisement can put Sourav Ganguly or Anil Kumble to shame, as they both are known to wear glasses off field. More precisely, in the early part of their careers, both Anil Kumble and Daniel Vettori used to wear glasses(In fact Daniel Vettori still wears glasses). Go on. Ask them, do glasses act as a deterrent to playing Cricket?

Even I have played Cricket, representing my school team and I always wore my glasses. Never mind a few fielding mistakes, I was a hit batsman and a reasonable bowler, quite unlike that dumbo Cricketer of that advertisement.

Why do people wear contact lenses?

It is not too difficult to understand why people wear contact lenses. For a start, people wear contact lenses to do away with their glasses. Contact lens manufacturers claim that lenses give you an all-round vision, quite unlike glasses which provide you with a limited scope of vision. But let me ask a question – do we really need an all-round vision? I mean, all-round vision is useful if we have to look from the corner of our eye. How often do we find ourselves doing that? And if we really need to look from the corner of our eyes, then it is better to turn our face just that little bit to get a clearer vision. Glasses provide us with vision that is suitable enough to let us view everything in the visible spectrum. Users of glasses know its limitations and they do not worry about an all-round vision.

Another use of lenses is to make a fashion statement. People have started using coloured contact lenses to change the colour of their eyes. This is yet another incredible and ridiculous use of lenses. As if clothes, jewellery, footwear, headgear and hairstyle are not enough, people have now started using contact lenses to suit a particular fashion. I find it really amazing to see the pains that people take to look good.

If you really have to look good, then why not wear glasses? Walk into a showroom and you will find plenty of designs and makes of frames for glasses which can actually enhance the beauty of your face. And if you need some inspiration to wear glasses, picture Amitabh Bachchan wearing glasses. I know he looks better without his glasses, but then he looks and feels his age with glasses. Then look at Sania Mirza. Doesn’t she look cute with her glasses on?

In a country like ours, the use of lenses is derogatory for the eyes in the dusty environs of most of the cities as well as the countryside. We often end up wearing sunglasses to protect our eyes(and particularly the lenses) from the heat and dust of the surroundings. Again I have a question – if we really have to wear glasses, then why wear contact lenses in the first place? Instead why not go to an optician and get sunglasses made according to your eye-prescription? And if you don’t want sunglasses, then you can even go for photo chromatic glasses, which can adjust the colour of the glasses according to the intensity of the light of the surroundings.

Contact lenses have too many issues attached to them. I too have used contact lenses some 4 years ago. I can tell you for sure that it is very difficult to place the lens in front of your eye. The how’s and whys of this is very simple. Take a small test for yourself – deliberately place a finger less than an inch in front of your eye. You will involuntarily close your eyes.

When I had used contact lenses, the immediate effect that I noticed was that my right eye started watering profusely, so much so that the lens would get displaced by itself. I went back to the doctor, he suggested some minor adjustments and after his advice, the watering stopped. But then I realized that it is difficult for me to maintain the lenses. Every set of contact lens has to be washed in its liquid solution regularly and kept properly in its containers. Being a college student at that time, I found myself short of time to take care of the lenses. I tried my best to maintain the lenses for a period of time, but then with time constraints, I found myself switching back to glasses. The lesson I learnt was that taking care of contact lenses requires a lot of time and patience, which I found myself short of.

Another issue involved with contact lenses is its cost. A set of disposable contact lens will cost you anything upwards of Rs. 600/-. A set of long-term contact lens will cost you upwards of Rs. 1000/-. Whichever type of lens you may opt for, the cost will keep on increasing, and if your eyes are not able to adjust to it, then all that money goes down the drain.

Using contact lenses is not a joke. It involves putting something alien into your eyes. And more often than not, your eyes will have trouble adjusting to the lenses. It doesn’t matter what type of lenses you are using, if your eyes repel it, then let it be that way. Don’t think of using contact lenses again. Remember, your eyes are precious. They are your windows to the world. Don’t spoil your eyes just to look and feel good. But ultimately, the choice is yours.

Semi-soft lenses
Jun 19, 2005 09:28 PM 6425 Views

I was blessed with good vision till I turned 18. I initially had a vision power of -1.5 in both my eyes. Fair enough. I had just entered college & it was one of those years when I was conscious of my looks & I decided to go in for contact lenses. The doctor recommended that I wear semi-soft lenses. She painted a rosy picture of the good things about wearing them, probably sensing that an 18 year old will be more interested in good looks. Initially I wore them at home for an hour or so & gradually increased the time. My eyes always appeared small when I wore them.

Every time I went out-side & a speck of dust entered my eyes, they would turn red & start watering profusely. The doctor then told me to wear sun-glasses. I suffered the ordeal of wearing those lenses for over 2 years when one day I found that I had broken one of them. Fearing that my mother would refuse to buy another one, I used only one lens for a long time. Resultingly, my power shot up & I stopped wearing those dreadful lenses. Now my power stands at -4.5. I started using soft lenses which I found to be much much comfortable than the semi-soft one's.

The right contacts
Oct 09, 2004 10:00 PM 8653 Views

If I were to name the most revolutionary inventions of the 20th century, it would probably be glasses and contact lenses for having enlarged horizons for millions of people world over. They are the single most effective tool that have made people more versatile, economically viable, look and feel better.

Where to buy

Buy contact lenses from a good optician. Let him measure not only the power but also the curvature of the pupil of the eye, this is important for comfortable lens wear.

Similarly when you buy a new pair of specs, make sure he checks the center too.

Options you have

My mother talks of hard contact lenses of her time, which were brittle, made of a glass like substance and were prone to falling. We have come a long way. Thank god for that! Soft contact lenses are made of soft, flexible substance that allows eyes to breathe. In the past ten years that I?ve used them( I bought my first pair when I was in class VIII), they have never fallen off my eyes?. they have fallen from my fingers though, during some clumsy moments.

Opticians today are recommending disposable soft contact lenses guaranteed for maximum comfort, which I?ve never tried. One more option that I?ve not tried is colour contact lenses worn for cosmetic reasons. I would recommend Bausch & Lomb contacts. A pair costs Rs 800-900.

People with cylindrical power have 3 options-

· If the cylindrical power is low(.5), go for normal contacts. Sometimes the optician will increase the power of the myopic lens to compensate for the cylinder

· Wear normal contacts. Keep specs for cylinder handy to read finer print

· Go for toric lenses which provide cylindrical power and cost around Rs 3000.

Lenses and Make up

Kajal is totally compatible with contacts. Apply it with lenses on; you will be able to make a more well defined line like this. You can use it even on your upper eyelid. If you prefer eyeliner, go for pencil liner or the twister. Personally I avoid mascara and liquid liner anyway and think they make a terrible combination with lenses. Eye shadow obviously is not a problem. Remove the make up before removing the lenses.

Things you should remember

1) Cleanliness

make sure the lens case is always clean. Wash your hands before handling CL(use a non-moisturizing soap)

2) Solution

use solution liberally with the lenses. I use ReNu Multipurpose of Bausch & Lomb-it does not require enzyme tabs for protein removal.

Do not use water unless in case of emergency, water makes the lenses sticky and uncomfortable.

3) Storage

do not store at hot places. Keep at room temperature.

4) Cut those nails

handling contacts with long nails is tough. You can end up tearing the lenses. At least keep the nail of the index finger on the right hand short

5) You can use a permanent marker to distinguish cases if others in the family wear them too. And use the marker to mark

left and right compartments.

6) Buy a new pair every 18 months

7) Use good UV protection, your eyes deserve it. A pair of shades will also prevent dust from entering your eyes on a windy day.

Likewise uses goggles while swimming.

8) If you wear your contacts over the sink, plug it to avoid the risk of draining them away.

Never attempt these

1) Do not wear lenses on Holi.

2) Do not sleep wearing them, you will wake up to extreme discomfort.

3) Do wear them when you have eye flu/infection in the eye.

Come back to good old specs in these cases. With high-index, anti-glare lenses in the coolest frames available today even those boring glasses have begun looking sleek and cosmetic. Noticed the change in P.Chidambaram and Narayan Murthy?s appearance over the years?

Hard vs. Soft

The Horrible Glasses

I got glasses the first time at the age of 5. I remember the day I went to school with them. I thought I looked like the ugliest child in the world. They were huge baby pink plastic glasses. Eyukh!

I was taunted and made fun of because I looked so ugly in glasses. And anyway, for some reason my mother always picked the big frames.

The Revolution

Anyway, at the age of 14, I was finally allowed by the doctor to get my own pair of contact lenses.

My sisters wore gas permeable hard contact lenses. They said they were easier to handle.

So, I decided to try them. They charged me$110.00 CAN just to tell my how to put them on, and it took 5 seconds! That was a rip off. Anyway, hard contacts are much smaller than soft contacts. They don't cover your whole eye, but you can see just as clearly. They're hard, hence the name'Hard Contacts'. They can break if you try to break them, or if you have them upside down and push down on them. That has happened to me twice!

You only get one pair. They last you three years. They cost about$89.00 CAN each lens, which is$178.00 CAN for both.

Grr!

When I first tried them on, they annoyed me. For about a week I could feel them moving in my eye, because they do move around. They move so the lenses stay clean and moist, taking in some of the moisture from your eyes. It kind of gets annoying because you're attention is solely towards the dumb contacts.

But, after that first week, they are heaven. Sure, you get stuff in your eyes, and it hurts. But, as long as you have solution with you, it's no problem. All you do is take them out, soak them in the solution and put them back in. Make sure your hands are clean.

Applying Hard Contacts

They're so easy to apply because they are so small. Soft contacts make you stretch your eye to a full extent, and sometimes they curl. Believe me, I've tried them. It's annoying when you're trying to put a soft contact in your eye and it curls up. Anyway, make sure there's solution in your case. You gotta make sure the lens is not upside down, because if you push down on it hard it'll break. If it is upside down, move it around gently until it flips over. Once it's flipped over, pick it up by touching it with the same hand as your eye. For example, use your right hand for your right eye. It should stick to your hand because of the solution. The lens should be upside down on your finger. Then you transfer the lens to your other hands finger. Open your eye a little bit with the same hand as your eye, and apply the lens to your eye. Simple as that. But, there is a problem. The lens has to stick to your pupil. If you misplace the contact on the side of the eye, it’ll stay there. You have to move it around until it moves to your pupil. Repeat with the other eye.

The Positives

-no need to keep on buying disposable contact lenses. You just buy one pair, and they can last you longer than three years, depending on how you care for them.

-they’re easy to apply. Unlike soft contacts, you can just stick them on your eye. Some people, like myself, don’t even have to open their eye because they’re so used to poking the lens in their eye. With soft contacts, you have to open your eye wide no matter what, or else it won’t fit.

-although hard contacts break, they aren’t easy to break. Soft contacts are so easy to rip, and sometimes they can rip in your eye. That is quite dangerous, as some of its pieces can be stuck in your eye. Hard contacts will never break in your eye.

-I find that I can see clearer and my eyes feel fresher when I wear hard contacts. This may not be true for everyone, but it is to me.

-they’re cheaper than soft contacts. If you buy a yearly pair over here in Canada they can cost up to$200.00 CAN. That may not be everywhere in Canada, but where I live they cost that much.

-they’re blue so you can see them in water, if you drop them. Most soft contacts I’ve seen are clear, but some have a blue tint in them for when you drop them in water. But, all hard contacts have the blue tint feature. Not all soft contacts have that feature.

The Negatives

-once they break, you gotta buy again. If you only broke one, you only have to buy one. But if you break both, you gotta pay$178.00 again.

-you only get one pair. With disposable, although it can be expensive, you still know you have some extra contact lenses and don’t need to worry about buying a new pair until your disposables are almost finished.

-they are annoying the first week, but after that they are fine. Also, if you get anything in your eye, the lenses kill! You have to take it out, wash it with solution and apply them again. With soft contacts, it doesn’t hurt.

-hard contacts stick to your eye, as if it’s s*cking on to them. You don’t feel it, but if you apply your contacts to the wrong part of your eye, it’ll stick to there. You have to move it around until it sticks to your pupil.

-they aren’t available in colour.

The choice is yours whether you want hard or soft contact lenses. I've tried both, and personally I like the hard ones better.

Raj Is No Rotter ... He Is Potter!

'I feel like an idiot. Why the hell did I repeatedly watch the idiot box?'

Five long years ago, an eye inspection at my school revealed that apart from a phone number, I also had an eye number. A shockingly high one. It was amazing how I had managed to develop such a high number without noticing it and the opthalmologist warned me, 'If you do not wear spectacles constantly, Amitabh Bachchan will force you to rob a bank .'

Ek do teen chaar paanch, jamoore, ghoom jaa.

Now, I don't mind stealing banks, nor do I mind being trained by Sushmita Sen, but then, what's the use of being trained by her if I turn blind? So, I decided to visit an optician and sing a la Devang Patel'Chasma, chashma' (Chash's mother, Chash's mother)

I entered the optician's and saw a girl who resembled Penelope Cruz. I looked around and when I didn't see any over-protective Tom Cruise around, strode forward and banged into her. My convenient excuse was obviously that I didn't see her owing to my poor eyesight and for everybody's information, this incident took place before SRK's'Baadshah' released.

'What do you want?' asked a salesman.'I want woh wali magazines, do you have them in stock?' Seriously, the kind of questions people ask! It's obvious that one buys spectacles at the optician's and not sleazy magazines!

I was rushed into a tiny cubicle, wherein a  man who strongly reminded me of Nana Patekar, complete with a monotonous tone which never changed its pitch, told me to sit down and read. I strained my eyes. He put a lens in front of my eyes and again commanded me to read.'C A D T .' After reading the entire sequence, I stormed out of the clinic and went to my kindergarten teacher's house with a complaint.'Ma'am, you didn't teach me the alphabet properly. The correct order is not A B C D, it is C A D T .'

After being convinced that the Nana Patekar clone had mixed up the letters purposely, I went back to the smart cookie's clinic. And became the proud owner of a pair of glasses. Don't worry, I am not drinking, I am not talking about Devdas' wine glasses, I was talking about the good old chashma.

I experimented with frames. My first frame was larger than my face. I became a girl magnet overnight; every girl would get repelled .

Came standard IX and a new girl joined school. The fact that she resembled Kareena Kapoor was reason enough for me to lose my heart, senses and . er no, I didn't lose it Moreover, it was reason enough for me to buy a new frame - a black metallic frame.

Around the same time, I was made the director of the play my house was putting up for the annual Dramatics competition. Now, in spite of the biting cold weather(by Bombay standards) that particular year, I never liked wearing a sweater. Since my mom used to force me to carry one everyday, it used to end up hanging around my neck, the way SRK did so in Mohabbatein. Add to that my black-rimmed spectacles and of course my name, and everyone used to ask me'Raj A Malhotra, where is your bhootni Trash?'

And then came the time when Mr. Scarface became famous. Now, I don't know why having long straight hair, flopping down on your forehead is equivalent to resembling Harry Potter, but that's what others felt. My spectacles helped, of course!

Apart from the serious identity crisis I was facing(Harry, Raj A Malhotra et al), I realised that spectacles are the prime reason that bowlers in cricket resort to chucking. Whenever I used to bowl, my hand used to brush m y spectacles and they would fall. The only way I could bowl without them falling was to resort to chucking. Akhtar and Muralitharan have a new excuse now .

Also, imagine kissing someone who wears spectacles. Add the fact that you too are unfortunate to wear them. Instead of lips, glasses meet. Shudder!

And so I was back to Mr. Nana Patekar.'Ab Tak Do Hazaar Chappan', he said, flashing his sixty-four teeth. I shuddered and was about to run when he added'2056 pairs of lenses I have sold.' I breathed more easily and bought a pair of semi-disposable Bausch & Lomb contact lenses.

Since then, whoever has troubled me has received the threat, 'Don't mess with me, I have contacts .'

====================

Now, whoever has experimented with lenses must have heard this 56 times, but let me rant on .

~ Learn how to wear and remove your lenses from the optician perfectly. Practise in front of him quite a few times, until you are confident.

~ Wash your hands before wearing the lenses.

~ Use a good cleaning solution. The best, in my opinion, is ReNu multi-purpose solution. A multi-purpose solution is always better because the same solution cleans the lenses as well as removes the harmful proteins.

~ Don't be a Sindhi. Er, I mean, don't be miserly while using the solution.

~ Try not to wear the lenses for more than 10-12 hours at a stretch. This duration varies depending on the type of lenses you wear, though.

~ Now, your lenses is not a person of the opposite sex, but if you have slept with them, don't panic. Try to open your eyes and put a couple of drops of the solution in your eyes. This should lubricate the lenses and they will settle more comfortably. Then, you can remove them.

~ If your eyes have dried before removing the lenses, add a drop of solution, as this will prevent the lens from breaking.

~ There is always a chance, especially, if you are a beginner, that your lens may fall off as you haven't worn it properly. So, always keep a spare pair of lenses, so that you do not have to wait for two days before getting back the clear vision, without the pain of wearing spectacles.

~ Cut your nails as long nails may harm lenses.

~ Remember that semi-disposable and fully-disposable lenses are much better than the ones which last you for a year. My dad had earlier used the annual ones and he informs that they were rather painful and not the best when it came to vision. Yours truly, from his personal experience can tell you that the disposable variety guarantee complete vision and absolute comfort.

=============================

Yet, I still wear my spectacles, sometimes. This nikamma is extremely lazy and there are emergencies when he wakes up half an hour prior to an important lecture, which is why he is forced to wear his latest frame - a black round one, which forces everybody to call him Harry Potter.

And if you do not comment, I will curse Avada Kedavra!

Comfortable pair of eyes
Nov 27, 2003 11:15 AM 7275 Views

My rendezvous with glasses started sometime when I was 10 and all I could see from the back benches were streaks of white on the black board. Well, me being no Ash, look horrible wearing spectacles. But, resigned to fate I decided to wear them anyhow. But, then all of a sudden, nearly three years ago, I got enthusiastic about a whole new world called contact lenses, and ‘wow’, they were a God-sent-gift for me. Without, delaying any longer, I quickly shifted to lenses.

Let me just say - they were the best. I, being the worst at handling things used to break glasses which costs in thousands within just 8 or 9 months after buying them. To top it all, irrespective of whether I grew or not, my power( I mean the vision problem), grew by nearly 2 points every 12 months. Though lenses may be difficult to handle, they are much easier than glasses and no matter how good the lenses are, you dispose them off after the prescribed time period - the longest time being one year. Also, people started thanking me for the sudden change, ‘cos they did not have to bear the sight of me and my terrible glasses and in fact there was someone who also noticed my eyes all of a sudden and said ‘hey, you have great eyes’(Not that I believed that totally, but yes, I was flattered). If you have tried brushing your hair or dressing up wearing glasses - you would understand my trouble. While brushing your hair, the stem of the glasses hinders the comb, and once glasses are removed, all I can see if a vaguely coloured shape in the mirror. Imagine wearing a helmet and glasses together -by far the horriblest thing. The whole process of getting the bike started and moving takes a much shorter time than adjusting your helmet and glasses to get a clear vision and comfort( both of which are always mutually exclusive). Has anyone picked a fight( I mean really physical) wearing specs, I don’t have to elaborate on that difficulty.

Clinically, contact lenses curb the increase in power. Though a notable change may not be visible immediately, but in course of time the power ceases to rise. In addition, lenses help cure astigmatism. Also, the scope of vision increases, since, contact lenses cover the entire eyeball, whereas glasses give a clean eyesight only for straight view.

Well, let’s just say that all my joy was shortlived, because I had developed an infection and was back to my nerdy glasses for nearly a month. Believe me - I was the brunt of all criticism owing to my geeky spectacles. Fresh out of an infection, let me  share with all those lens users, all the basic rules for a lens wear. So, to avoid any problems with your lenses, learn from my mistakes and please follow this. Not that you don’t know these laws, but anyway. Always, clean your hands with soap before wearing or removing lenses. Clean your lenses everyday, before and after wearing them. Wash the lens case atleast every alternate day. Even, if you are using a lens solution which does not require deprotinizing, please use deenzyming tablets. It ensures perfectly clean lenses. Try your best to reduce the time of lens wear. Do not use disposable lenses for a long time even if they are in a very good condition. No sleeping or swimming wearing lenses.

These are just basic rules and shoudn’t scare anyone off lenses. Also preferably take up disposable lenses since they are much more hygienic. Nowadays, we have quarterly, monthly, and even weekly disposable lenses. Also colored lenses are available( but only in disposable formats). They are mainly for cosmetic use where in people wear contacts just once in a while. A wide range of brands of contact lenses are available and anyone can try them but only under the supervision of a licensed practitioner.

Also, remember, your practitioner or lens provider is not a doctor. So, always visit an ophthamologist once every six months and ensure a clear vision. For people, who do not suffer from any vision problems, please take care of your eyes. Though we have a number of products to help us to a healthy living, there is nothing like a perfect sight without glasses or lenses. Eyes are the best features anyone has, so, take good care of it.

Tears...

Let me inform u guys.nothing related to the category stands for my review.i mean I havent requested categories and simply began to write on somewhat similar versions.so wearing lenses got nothing to do with what's to follow.

only if u want to.read on.

A young man awaiting his flight to the states shortly bent down to touch his old mother’s feet who was seated on a wheelchair trying to hide her tears of pain as her son was leaving. So many emotions were running rampant within. Was the feeling, Happiness or the joy of getting an opportunity to fly abroad or was it the pain, the grief to depart from each other? Hearts failed to understand and tolerate the tension. Finally something to release the confusion and compressed pain within was born.their TEARS! The cherished pieces of the past and priceless moments shared caused the saline water drops to trickle down the cheeks. As each separation is a little more painful than the last, every tear is a better relief than the last artificial smile of discomfort within. Everyone in the world cries. But how many of us know how very important parts of our lives these tears, which we shed, are? Feeling the goose flesh on, touchy, overwhelmed feelings, etc. Every bit of life consists of them. Life without the actual meaning is the one without these salty crystals. Tears speak. They can express feelings better than a cheerful face with shining eyes can do. They are life’s lenses through which we are able to see the threatening emotions and opinions of others-eventually their walls become windows through which we can see the fears and bind them in our grip as well as realize their prejudices. It is said that the smiles on each face with a tear in every eye were spotted in the home country as well as the nationals abroad when India won the World Cup in 1983 with a grand score. The team was commanded by the hero of those days, Kapil Dev, the man who wiped off a tear from his cheek when he was overwhelmed receiving the honour. 25th Dec. 1999 Tears trickled down on almost all smiling faces when the Indian Airlines, IC-814 was set free by the terrorists. The pain had come to a halt; an end was put to the sufferings of all the passengers on board as well as their relatives who remained for seven days in just tears! The days of horrifying infamy- January 26th and 11th September 2001, life changed entirely. A stunning series of terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center towers not only shriveled hearts with panic but also engrained tears in eyes and loss of security in all. Innumerable salty drops of water trickled down causing even the charm of sunshine to fade into the tears of dark clouds. The last smiles of the million victims of the terrific quake in Bhuj shall always be remembered through our tears.

Fear limits your existence; tears open the cages for you, giving you a fresh beginning of a new hope, new dream, and a new aim. The most significant fact of life is… just like you cannot do what is right without knowing what you shouldn’t do, you can never possess a true blooming smile until and unless you know what sorrow is, what gloom is, what tears are.So, never bully others when they cry, that’s the power given by God to each soul!

Lets Make Eye-Contact
Mar 14, 2003 06:20 PM 11567 Views

I would like to take you on a journey to a time long gone, when I was in Class 9. At school, besides other nefarious activities I used to, hide classmates’ glasses kept on desks while they away, then enjoy their blind searches. I was also one of those who were active name–callers. Classmates with glasses were called Chashm-e-buddoor, Double-Battery and some unmentionable ones.(If you already didn’t, I know you all hate me now)

What happens to such a guy when he complains about dizzying headaches, an inability to read the blackboard from the last bench? His mom lugs him to an ophthalmologist. What happens to him when he is told he has to wear prescription glasses every waking hour especially whilst reading the blackboard? His world comes to a standstill, he feels like he has been slapped very hard, like a resonating clap of thunder that pierced through his very….(Ok, I’ll cut the drama, if you say so)

My glasses did help me realize a clarity in vision and how hitherto the world was but a turbid haze. Yet, I won’t wear them, before reaching school I’d push them far away in my bag, and if any co-obnoxious teaser would discover them in there, I’d simply say they are my grand-pop’s. As the dizzying headaches got dizzier, my parents began to realize I just wouldn’t wear glasses. After six months of threatening and bawling(them threatening, me bawling and at times vice versa) I was taken to a contact lens clinic.

The moment I saw the world for the first time through my new contact lenses in the optician’s office, I had an urge to yell, “Main dekh sakta hoon” like Nirupa Roy. But my no-nonsense, big bro was standing behind me and that’s what made me shut up and instead just say a simpler, matter-of-fact, “Wow”. And the more I wear my soft contact lenses, the more I thank whoever invented them(Sorry, I’ve been too lazy to get that info)

The advantages of soft contact lenses over spectacles are too many to enumerate

# Ever gone jogging with glasses? Your glasses also jog, albeit with a differing pace. Sweat a lot and your glasses fall. Contacts add enjoyment and improved performance to a number of sports.

# Ever been in the ordeal of trying to board a crowded local train in Bombay with glasses on and hordes of people pushing you in? As you get inside, you realize, the glasses got left behind on the platform. A reversed situation exists when you try to alight with a crowd to a more crowded platform. You alight, but your glasses prefer the compartment.

# Contact lenses improve the vision scope. With glasses your world is divided into two distinct halves, a clear one from within your frame and a hazy one from immediately outside it.

# Have you been in a fight with glasses? You have to place them carefully someplace and then swing your fists, what a waste of time. Before that you could end up getting a few punches on your face.

# Glasses and sex… no no. what a hindrance

# Men do not make passes at girls who wear glasses(How original can I get The vice versa is true too. I have noticed, the only girls who like guys in glasses are the ones whose daddies have been wearing glasses too. All right, I understand glasses give character to the face, and blah blah. But God made us without glasses, thus we look better without them. More natural.

At the risk of sounding like your parents I’m going to say all this

# Clean your lenses E-V-E-R-Y-D-A-Y before and after wearing them. After is especially important. Lazy duffers like me just throw them in the case as soon as the day is done. But it is at this time the lenses need the most cleaning. Wash the lens-case twice a week.

# Use good cleaning solution. He best bet these days are those multi purpose solutions from Ciba, Baucsh & Lomb, Allergan etc, that do away with keeping a set of solutions and deprotinizing tablets etc.

# Don’t scrimp on cleaning solution, use it liberally.

# Do not towel dry your hands before picking up your lenses prior to wear. Unseen fibres of towels that travel into the eyes with lenses can really pinch. Make sure your palms and fingertips are moist with clean water before you pick your lenses

# Carefully learn from your ophthalmologist the wearing and removal procedure.

# Should you feel an pinch while your lenses are on, they have probably not been cleaned well.

# Should you feel an irritating dryness while wearing lenses simply splash some water on open eyes, not to hard though. If the dry feeling persists consult your ophthalmologist for the use of artificial tears.

# NEVER sleep with your lenses on. Yours truly had done that twice after particularly merry parties. Besides the hangovers, the other painful part is peeling lenses stuck to your eyes all night long.

# Do not wear lenses for very prolonged periods. At times let your eyes breathe, leave them naked without lenses or glasses

# Women with long nails need to be extra cautious while handling lenses.

# Don’t ride bikes without adequately protecting your lenses

# No swimming with lenses in direct contact with pool water. Pool water is highly chlorinated hence, not compatible with contact lenses. Wear adequate eye cover when swimming with contacts. Similarly contact lenses cannot be worn in a sauna.

ATTENTION: There is a real risk to not following proper hygiene with contact lens wearing. Corneal ulcers and lacerations. But that will happen only when you are not careful and do not maintain proper hygiene. Careless people lacking even that wee bit of discipline required should not go in for lenses.

A wide range of contact lenses available in India now

Don’t even bother with the hard or semi soft contact lenses as they are absolutely outdated. The best lenses are from Cibavision, Johnson and Johnson, and Bausch & Lomb. I have used all brands now and all are equally good, without much differences in rates.

Colored contact lenses are more for cosmetic appeal, ladies favor them and an increasing number of men do so too. But personally I do not go for them as I believe that the colors that are available do not suit our Indian skin colors. I tried blue, gray and green lenses in my opticians office and yelled louder each time I saw myself in the mirror, I simply don’t have the confidence to color my eyes.

Disposable lenses, save you the bother of washing, just throw the lenses away. The typically kanjoos guy that I am, I make my monthly disposables last for almost 4-5 months, instead of one. Kindly do not follow my idiocies.

Now we even have weekly disposables and also daily disposables. The fuss associated with these is lesser and lesser, but the costs are more. You don’t need any cleaning regimens with daily disposables. Now there are also available extended wear lenses, these contacts may be worn when you are asleep, either overnight or for up to one week. Contact lenses are for specific eye conditions also like Astigmatism, Presbyopia, bifocal vision etc.

Those who haven’t tried them yet, I strongly ask you to try them out. There is really no need for unfounded fears of adding a foreign body in your eye, it is after all 90% water.

~

Go ahead and Make Eye-Contact

PS: As the years passed, Ive gotten over my intense dislike for glasses and wear them pretty often too. Just adding some more usless lines here.
