Travel in Wales - Land of EU Dragon

Travel to Wales

From Sep to Dec 2005, I was staying and travelling in Wales. I visited many of the touristic places there. The people are very nice. They speak and ancient Celtic language called Welsh - Cymru (kimru). They are still 'ruled' by England and most of them hate it. Some of the people with whom I talked, commented that, Indians are lucky to get freedom from England, as they are still ruled by the monarchy since the last 1000 years. Since 1997, they have their own Assembly and expect to extend more freedom in the coming years.

Celtic is another culture which was destroyed by the Romans and later by the Christians. Now-a-days, the remaining peoples - Irish, Scottish, Welsh etc. are trying to revive their lost traditions and cultural practices including language.

They are building their assembly building by spending 40 million GBP (pounds) and the specialty is that it will be a very sustainable/eco friendly once it is completed.

Wales is the first country to adapt Sustainable Development into their constitution and it is mandatory to look into aspects of sustainability in every project and programmes that they do!! They are leading in development of alternative energy sources, eco tourism, water conservation methodologies, waste management projects etc. and becoming a model for other EU countries to follow. They have developed their own ''Green Certification'' called ''Green Dragon'' which is gaining popularity in the country.

As you must be aware that red Dragon is the symbol of Wales? There is a nationalist party (Plaid Cymru)which is gaining popularity in the country.

I found it little disturbing to see dirty roads by students / youngsters spitting bubble gum and throwing cans of softdrinks / beer. Some people also throw waste, just like India, on the road - though it is punishable if caught.

The climate is extremely cold and wet. The super markets like Tesco, Asda, Aldi and Lidl are making big business. The items they sold are cheap and in turn affect the life of farmers as they don't get good prices for their products. They also procure goods from cheaper destinations, mostly Eastern Europe or developing countries and sell them. If you know cooking and have facility to cook while you lie there, life is not that tough in Wales.

After Margaret Thatcher's rule, privatization ruined the public transport system (to support the car manufacturers) and now they are struggling to bring back people to use buses / trains. Public transport system are not well maintained due to lack of funding from Government. Some times, you will feel that Indian Railways is far more better connected than the rail net work there.

One could learn a lot from the management of infrastructure and tourism destinations. They are well maintained and people friendly. What I mean by ''people friendly'' is that it is mandatory to have access to people on wheel chairs and most of the information is available in multiple languages and signs.

As regard to the biodiversity of the region, I must say that, it is deteriorated over a period of many centuries. They do not consider 'nature' beyond something to consume or exploit. They have no value for it beyond financial terms. As it is almost destroyed, now they are struggling to instill value for nature and biodiversity. Hence they are requesting other developing countries not to make the same mistakes that they have made.

When they ask us to consider Sustainable Development concepts in our national or regional policies, we are finding it hard to accept and oppose it in the name of 'development'. It is high time, we ask the question, what is development with out 'nature'.

Wales is famous for natural beauty

During June 2005, I visited Wales with my wife. We took a weekend conducted tour operated by ''Budget Trip'' of London. We departed from London on Friday evening. We reached Llandudno at around 11 pm. We stayed in a B&B (I've forgotten the name of the hotel).

Next morning we travelled Llandudno for an hour. There was a tram service (more than 100 years old) which goes to top of Llandudno mountain. Llandudno (pronounced as Clandudno) is a picturesque city. It's small, old and beautifully perserved sea side town.

After that we travelled by bus to the base of Snowdon mountain. It is the highest mountain in Wales. There is a train service (toy train) which can take you to the top of the mountain for £20 return per person. It's a bit expensive but climbing the mountain by foot is too exhaustive! We took almost 3 hours to reach the top of the mountain by walking. It is really too long. I really should have taken the train (at least for climbing up). So, I suggest that if you visit Snowdon mountain, unless you are a good hiker, better take the train.

However, the view from the top of mountain was spectacular! Some blue lakes can be seen from the mountain on all sides. The weather was clear and it potraited a perfect natural beauty.

On next day morning, we travelled first to Conwy castle. It is situated at Conwy - which is again a sea side town. Incidentally, the smallest house in Great Britain was also there! The journey to Conwy was marvellous. On one side of the highway there was mountain and on other side the sea. It was truely eye catching scenary - as we see in picture postacards.

The Conwy castle itself was not that impressive. It's a typical British castle with no special characters. Visitors can walk thru top curtains of the outer castle wall.

From here we travelled to Llanflair (pronounced Clanflair). It is a very small town. It has longest place name in the world - Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyll-llantysiliogogogoch.

From here we moved to Beddgelert village. It's again a wonderful well preserved mountain town. A small stream of river was flowing thru the centre of the villages. Most houses were made of stones. The flowers spread all over the city.

While coming back from Wales, we travelled a lot of distance thru mountains. The natural beauty of the Wales was marvellous. North Wales is one of the best scenic places in Britain.

In Wales, all signs are written in both English & Welsh languages. Wales is still sparsely populated and kept its pristine natural beauty for years.

PS: Welsh women are most good looking in the Great Britain :-)

COOL CYMDU, (WALES).

My Son went to the University of Wales in Cardiff. I believe that Wales was once the home of the mystical place called AVALON. The Welsh people are mystical and talented was well. There are over 3 million of them waiting to welcome you.

TEN REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT WALES:

1) CARDIFF is the Capital City of Wales. It is the fastest growing City in Europe. There is a unique network of Edwardian and Victorian Arcades that give you a wide range of stores and cafes. I thought Cardiff was wonderful. I don't know why it is redeveloping it's dock side to look like Mermaid Quay. This Quay extends out onto a fresh water lake and it has a lot of shops, bars and restaurants.

2) The national sport of Wales is Rugby. The games are played at MILLENNIUM STADIUM. The Stadium has the largest retractable roof in Europe. Despite it's size it only costs $7.50 USD to open and close it. The University is charming with its older vine covered buildings. Would you believe that the University has a team that plays American Football? Trust me they do because my son was the quarterback of the team. Most major Universities in England and Wales have set up a league that plays football like they do in the U.S.A. They play football in the open fields at the Universities.

3) The NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF WALES was established in 1999. This was a historic occasion in U.K. politics. It gave Wales it's own Parliament. The buildings are on Cardiff Bay.

4) There are more CASTLES, (some are in ruins), in WALES than any other place in the World, (over 400). UNESCO has given their World Heritage designation to Beautmaris, Caernarfon, Conway and Harleck Castles. If you are visiting Wales you can even stay at a Castle. There is one at the entrance to the Pormerion Italiane Village. The Castell Deudraeth is now a luxury hotel.

5) MOUNT SNOWDON is the highest mountain in Wales. You can choose between hiking up to the summit or use the U.K.'s only rack and pinion railway. The rock face is so steep this is where Snowdone and the members of his team practiced before going to climb Mount Everest.

6) THE SUPER NATURAL BEAUTY OF WALES is everywhere you look. We visited the 3 National Parks, which are Snowdonis, Brecon Beacon National Park and Pembrokeshire. At Snowdonia we walked through the Coed Y Brenin Forrest. During our visit to the 519 square mile Brecom Beacons National Park we walked over the moors and saw the waterfalls crashing down from the mountains into the valleys below. Pembrokeshire is the U.K.'s only coastal National Park. The park covers an area of 187 miles. During our walk we saw puffins, seals and dolphins.

7) THE NATIONAL BOTANIC GARDEN OF WALES is in the World's largest single span glasshouse. They are saving many of the endangered plants here for safekeeping. The park takes its cue from Charles Darwin, (the famous biologist and geologist), that shaped many of his theories while he was working in the northern mountains of Wales.

8) THE WELSH FOOD is more than mutton, lamb, seafood and cheese. Today Wales is producing some of the Worlds best food and drinks from the clear spring waters to gourmet food.

9) THE WELSH LANGUAGE which I never mastered but my Son and Husband did. Wales, (Cymru in Welsh), is one of the oldest living languages in Europe. To hear wonderful Welsh poetry and song plan to visit Wales when they are holding Royal National Eiseddfod, (festival?), when they hold it in St. David's each year.

10) You might want to meet some of the Stars who come from Wales. Some are alive and others are available at their graveside. Some names you might recognize are Richard Burton, Shirley Bassey, Anthony Hopkins, Zeta Jones, the Sterophonics pop band, the Manic Street Preachers pop band, the National Male Choir and the lady with a voice like an angle Charlotte Church.
