Unakoti is ahistoric shiva pilgrimage spot and dates back to 7th-9th centuries if not earlier. It is situated in Tripura, tiny state of north-Eastern part of India. It is 30 km away from my house.I went there 15 to 16 time. This place, by going through a beautiful mountain sprawling streets. There are less than One, One crore god's and goddesses carved on stone.UNA means in Bengali 1 less, and KOTI means crore. Before there were many big stones to rise above. But now stairs have been made.winter is better for go here.beacuse during the rainy season the stones are slippery and very risky. The biggest Idol here is Shiva Statue carved and bathe kundo. There is a bathing place called KUNDA at regional language.here is a huge fair every year. Many domestic and foreign visitors came here.I visit there during the fair and another free time.During the rainy season, people use leaves of trees as umbrella. If you go to any nearby hotel, you have to go to kailashahar or Dharmanagar because there is no hotels.Mountanous place but very fun.The central Government of India is taking initiative to improve the place. If you ever come to The Tripura don't forget to visit Unakoti.

Historical tourist place
Feb 18, 2016 02:27 PM4725 Views

I have been going to this place since, my childhood days. It's a historical heritage where every year different saints come to meditate from different places. Specially, during ashokastami mela, we can see the huge crowd gathering over there in the month of April. This place is located near Unakoti district of Tripura, head quarter town, Kailashahar. This place is a bit slippery during rainy days but you can enjoy watching waterfall in rainy days.

This place is having so many sculptures of Lord Shiva and other deities & many cravings on stones too. Basically, it's a hilly spot with numerous stairs which are used to climb the tourist spot. This place is eco friendly spot with a lush of greenary around it. It is a perfect picnic spot for the families & friends.

SInce, it's not very far from the Kailashahar town, so, u can go to this place via car, auto, two wheeler or share autos. It falls in the mid way of Kailashahar to Dharmanagar town(which is the head quarter of North district of Tripura. It's a very peaceful spot away from the noise and crowd of the town located in the Unakoti hills. Hotels & Lodging is available in the nearest town to visit this place which is pocket friendly.

Unakoti- The place of Lord Shiva

Unakoti is a tourist spot in the tiny north eastern state Tripura. It is almost 180 Km away from state capital Agartala and only around 10 Km away from Kailasahar Sub division.

I have visited this place twice with family and friends. We hired a private car and started our journey to Unakoti. Both Teliamura town and  Bara Mura hills came on the way to Unakoti. Roads are smooth and a bit zig zag too, we enjoyed the hilly roads.

Unakoti means one short of Crore. "Koti" means crore in Bengali. There are one short of crore stone cravings of various gods and goddesses on the hills. Apart, there are so many animal cravings, lots of geometrical shapes of stones are craved there. But, the main attraction is the Idol of Shiva. The largest of craving is the God Shiva head which is around 30 feet height. So, it is quite a pious place and both pilgrimages and tourist visit this place to worship Lord Shiva. There are countless stone cravings and you will get tired seeing them.

You have to be physically fit to explore this place on the hills. It is always better to visit this place in winter, as in rainy season the hill becomes risky. In the month of April, a festival is held in this place named Ashokastomi Mela.

There are no hotels to stay in Uankoti, so either you have to stay in nearby town Kailasahar or for a better accomodation you have to go another nearby city Dharmanagar. As it is not possible to back to Agartala after a whole day visit in Unakoti Hill.

Infrastructure is not up to the mark in this place, may be the location is the main reason. It is situated in north eastern part of the country. Both State and Central Government should promote this place in proper way and try to develop the better infrastructure. A wonderful example of Indian religion, culture and heritage just staying there mostly unnoticed!

If it is promoted properly, historians, researchers not even from India but also from aboard will take keen interest to this place.

So, if you visit Tripura, please do not forget to visit Unakoti hills, as it will be a fascinating experience of your life. I recommend this place.
