MAHAKALI NAGARI UJJAIN
Oct 23, 2016 01:45 PM 3003 Views (via Android App)

The early history of Ujjain is lost in the midst of antiquity. As early as the time of the Aryan settlers, Ujjain seems to have acquired importance. In the 6th century B.C. Avanti with its capital at Ujjaini, was mentioned in Buddhist literature as one of the four great powers along with Vatsa, Kosala and Magadha.

The history of ujjain dates back to the times of Ramayan and Mahabharat. Lord Ram visited with goddess Sita mata. Lord Ram performed “Pind-daan” for his father Dashrath at Ramghat. Shashth Ganesh placed here is said to have been settled by Sita mata. It is also said that Krishna, Balram and Sudama studied in the ashram of guru Sandipani at Ujjain. In the battle of Mahabharat, the ruler of Ujjaiyini, Vind and Anuvind took part with much bigger army of two Akshohini army. Vind and Anuvind were the two brothers of Duryodhan among the 100 sons of Dhritarashtra. After the Mahabharat, the history of Ujjain went in to the dark but archaeological prints indicated that there was a technology and industry ( bhatti etc.) of making “Iron” available at Ujjain in BC 800.

Ujjain used to lay on the main trade route between north India and Deccan going from Mathura via Ujjain to Mahishmati ( Maheshwar) on the Narmada river and to Paithan on the river Godavari, western Asia and the West. The northern black polished ware, the NBP as it is often called which is technically the finest pottery of the time, with a brilliantly burnished dressing almost of the quality of a glaze in colour from jet black to a deep grey or metallic blue and iron, found their way to the northern Deccan from the Gangetic plains through Ujjain. The articles of export to the western Asia such as precious stones and pearls, scents and spices, perfumes, silks and muslin, reached the port of Brighukachcha from the remote north through Ujjain. All this finds a detailed and interesting description in the Periplus of the Erythrean Sea. prevnext

There is an account of an unknown Greek merchant who made a voyage to India in the second half of the first century AD. The Periplus talks of a city called Ozene to the east of Barygaza ( Broach) which fed all commodities to trade like onyx, porcelain, fine muslin and quantities of ordinary cottons, spikenard , costus bodellium to this important port and to other parts of India.

The earliest known epigraphic record of the Paramaras, the Harsola Granth, issued at the beginning of the 10th century AD, maintains that the kings of the Paramara dynasty were born in the family of the Rastrakutas in the Deccan. The early Paramara chiefs of Malwa were probably vassals of the Rastrakutas. The Udaypur Prasati, mentions Vakpati Vakpati I as the king of Avanti and it was probably in his region that the Rastrakuta Indra III halted at Ujjain while advancing with his army against the Pratihara Mahipala I. Malwa was lost in the time of Vakpati’s successor, Vairisimha II, to the invading forces of Mahipala I who avenged his defeat at the hands of Indra III by invading the empire of Rastrakuta. Mahipala and his Kalachuri confederate Bhamanadeva are said to have conquered the territory up to the banks of the Narmada including Ujjain and Dhar. The Paramara sovereignty in the Malwa remained ceased until AD 946 when Vairsimha II became dominant in the area. It was in his son Siyaka II’s reign that the independent Paramara rule in Malwa began. It is believed that it was this time that the capital was shifted to the area of the Mahakala Vana in Ujjain.

From the 9th to the 12th centuries, the Paramaras became so identified with Ujjain that subsequent tradition converted Vikramaditya into a Paramara. The last Paramara ruler, Siladitya, was captured alive by the Sultans of Mandu, and Ujjain passed into the hands of the Muslims.

Thus began a long era of misfortune and decay and the ancient glory of Ujjayini was lost in a morass of repeated inroads of attacking hordes. The invasion of Ujjain by Iltutmish in 1234 triggered off a systematic de

A very holy place for the people who believe in gods. Don’t  think about the stay as you will get around 15-20 guest house in every area. So no need to spend a lot of time planning where to stay in ujjain. You will get room easily. Best suited for family trips.

The rooms are also not very costly and are available at a reasonable rate. There are a hell lot of temples to visit in ujjain and its really a city of temples. And one thing to keep in mind that every auto rickshaw drivers and travel agencies will ask you for sight scene  and they will charge you very much as around 5-6 places are nearby and you can reach there just by walking. So make sure about the places you want to visit and their distance from your stay.

Ujjain is famous for jyotirlinga Mahakaleshwar and Simhasth Kumbh in every 12 years. I reside in Ujjain and like this city. If one want to visit Ujjain then between September to February is ideal time.

Nearest airport is Indore and Ujjain is connected by all big cities by rail and road. Anjushree and Rudraksh are best place to stay. Please make online booking to get good deal.

Apana Sweets and Shree Ganga good food destination. For non veg and drinks Meghdoot punjabi Dhaba may also bd tried.

Ola service is available in Ujjain and good to use the same.

Apart from Mahakaleshwar, one must visit to Sidhsat, Kaalbherav and Mangalnath.

It is better to stay in the new area of city and roaming arround old part of the city to have a full culture understanding.

For Simhasth, better to stay in the Swiss Cottages then hotel. Above all it is a place of pilgrim and modern society mix culture.

Beautifull cities with full of ancient temples, most visited temple being mahakal, which is considered as the most powerfull shiva linga out of all 12 shiva lingas in India.

You can get autos to roam around all the temples at a resonable cost of around 200-300 and hotesl are available at a cost of around 1500-2000 near by the mahakaal temple. In evening by 10 the arrati usued to happen and bhasma aarti which is most famous happens in morning 4-5 am for which you need to book advance slot.

Must visit temples being Temple of Mars, Saturn, Jupiter( only temple of jupiter in world) and Kaal bhairav, where the statue of gate keeper of lord shiva known as kaal bhairav drinks wine offered by divotee.

Don't ever stay at Hotel Shagun,Ujjain. MUST READ!
Jan 31, 2014 02:48 AM 5643 Views

First, this is a completely unbiased and honest review based purely on my own personal experience. So, please take it very seriously.

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:

A cunning auto driver has approached us right from the bus stand and took us to this hotel - "Hotel Shagun". Beside this hotel you will find upstairs to the main road leading to the Mahakaal Temple. This proximity to the temple is the only plus point with this hotel. A'Sardarji' was the manager of the hotel. Now, I think you have got some hint about the location of this hotel so that you can identify it easily.

After check in to this hotel we found -

1.The hotel boy was very rude and non-cooperative by nature.

2.The room we got was in a very pathetic condition and expensive too.

  1. Moreover they have charged 10% service tax extra(without telling us in advance) at the check out time.

Surprisingly, we remain alone in the hotel in our 3 days stay! After investigating about the hotel, we have found that the hotel was cheating with its customers all the time. This fact has also been confirmed by the local people and shopkeepers.

WARNING:

Please stay away from this hotel at any cost otherwise you will spoil your holidays. Also, forward this information to the other people who are planning to visit Ujjain in near future.

Ujjain,the temple town
Feb 20, 2012 09:59 PM 7094 Views

Ujjain is best known as a religious city as MahaKumbh mela happened there sometime back and I saw its coverage on TV when Uma Bharti was Chief minister of Madya Pradesh.

Recently I got a chance to visit this city, we started from Jhansi and caught Malwa Express early morning which was some hours late, it reached Ujjain at 12pm and we boarded a small hotel near the railway station only for bathing and changing. It was good enough for that. From there we proceeded to MahaKaleshwar temple which is a major attraction there. It was heavily crowded outside the temple and if you go from normal queue, it will be hours to reach main shivling, so we opted for VIP darshan and bought its ticket and before entering that way, you've to deposit each and every thing in locker room except prasad. We deposited our stuff there and then proceeded for VIP darshan from a back way, its downstairs and every where you look, there are lots and lots of LCD screens which are telecasting live the shivling and puja down there. You've to walk in corridors and after some time you reach the main temple, there are metal detectors everywhere and then you finally reach a auditorium kind of thing and the main shivling is very far away, its a huge shivling, a pandit which brought you here will do the puja for you and you can watch it on LCD.After that you can receive your prasad, when you come back from another way, there is a person who will put a wooden thing on your forehead, after that you can see OM written on your forehead.

We came back from there to hotel and as we had no time to visit other tourist destinations there, we proceeded towards Indore after a brief tea and snack session where we had to attend a wedding in evening. On the way, I noticed Ujjain is a quiet and sleepy town and highway towards Indore is pretty good.

I hope the review is of some help for anyone thinking of visiting Ujjain.

Thanks for reading my review.

Pune-Nasik-Triambakeshwar –Indore-Ujjain-Omkareshw
May 07, 2009 10:37 PM 12925 Views

We are planned our summer trip by my Santro-Xing. Trip is planned for Pune-Nasik-Ujjain-Omkareshwar- Maheshwar- Maheshwar. Total traveled distance is 1550 kms.

Day1: Pune-Nasik-Triambakeshwar:

We are started around 5:00 pm from Pune and reached Triambakeshwar around 10:30 pm. 1 hour stop for dinner. Road condition between Pune-Nasik is good but traffic is heavy. There are lots of hotels &Dharmashalas in & around Triambakeshwar. We have chosen “Hotel Dhruv Palace” for our overnight stay. Hotel is pretty good and staff is co-operative.

Distance:248Km

Day2:TriambakeshwarDarshan

A regular tradition is taking a bath in Khund and go forDarshan. We took our bath at hotel and had been to temple around 5:15 am for darshan. Less crowd and we had a peaceful darshan. If you want to enter into Garbagruh and touch the Shiv Ling, you need to wear a Silk Dhoti without undergarments. Only gents are allowed inside the Garbagruh to touch the Shiv Lingam.

Triambakeshwar-Indore-Ujjain

We packed off around 8:00 am and had a breakfast and proceed to Ujjain. We have started from Nasik around 10:15 am. There is a four lane road between Nasik and Malegaon. Between Malegaon –Dhule Road is under construction. So there are some diversions between new and old roads. Between Dhule to M.Pborder , Road is two lane old high way and condition is good.We had a lunch at Hotel Rasraj in Dhule outskirts. This is the only one good hotel in and around Dhule. After this it is difficult to find a good hotel till Indore. Road condition is very bad once you entered into MP state.

After entering into MP state, you will find a one famous Kareem Baba Darga at Jhulvania. We have visited the Darga and had a cup of tea and started towards Indore. Four lane road on NH3 is under construction so Road condition is very bad [ I can say no Road ]between Dhamnod and Indore. I would prefer alternate route from Dhamnod even though you need to travel 50 kms more.Reached to Indore around 9:30 and had a dinner at UttamBhoh Hotel at A.B.Road and left for Ujjaini. Reached Ujjain around 11;30 pm and stayed at MPTDC Yatri Nivas hotel. MPTDC hotel is good and value for money.

Distance:495 km km

Day3: UjjainDarshan:

Bhasma Aarti is famous in Ujjain temple. We reached temple around 3:30 pm. Already there is along queue for Bhasm Aarti. Fortunately we got a chance for Bhasm Aarti.Recently they are introduced Bhasm Aarti passes which will be issued one day before near temple office. Bhasm aarti will start at 5:00 am and ends at 6:00pm. It is worth to see. You can feel that you are close to god. You should not miss is the Bhasma Aarti or ash-smearing ceremony, in which hot ashes from the cremation grounds are smeared on the Shivalinga. This event is believed to symbolize the fact that life and death are inseparable. Again we had a second darshan at 10:15 am aarti. Had a lunch in Hotel Shanti palace and went to Kalabhairav Temple. Whisky is served as a prasadam in this temple. When we give a whisky bottle, some amount of whisky is poured into God’s lips. It will go inside. Not sure where it will go.That is god’s magic

Ujjain-Indore-Omkareshwar:

Reached Indore around 4:00 pm and visited one of our friend’s house. Stayed there for a 2 hour and started to Omkareshawr. Road is very good.Newly built 2 lane road. After Barwah and before 12 kms of Omkareshwar , there is a good dhabha on the banks of Narmada river. Food is reasonably cheap and good. Reached to MPTDC Narmada resort around 10:30 pm. Resort is very good. Location is extremely good. You can have a good view of temple and River from resort rooms.

Distance:130Km

Day4:Omkareshwar -Maheshwar Darshan:

Early morning we had a darshan at Omkareshwar temple. We hada good darshan at Omkareshwar. After darshan we checked out the hotel. And started to Maheshwar. Maheshwar fort is good. Don’t opt for any guides at Maheshwar temple. Nothing to guide by any one.Narmada river view is beutiful. If you ahve atime you can plan for swimming in narmada. Our trip plan ends here.had a good Keera (Khakdi) with Lemon and salt.

Maheshwar –Shirdi-Pune:

We have started around 12:00 pm in Maheshwar and had a lunch in a small dhabha in Jhulvania. There are no good hotels and dhabas till Dhule. So we decided to have a lunch in a small dhaba. We order Dal and Roti. Dal isextremely good. Reached Shirdi at 9:00 pm and had a dinner in Shirdi andstarted to Pune. Reached Pune around 2:00 am.

Distance:540 Kms

A Place whereyou feel close to God
Oct 01, 2005 04:27 PM 8767 Views

Ujjain one of seven sacred places for Hindus. The place boasts of being an important place during reign of King Ashoka for Buddhism and believe me it gives you a feeling that you stand a bit close to god.

SHIVA in all his splendour reigns eternal in this place.

Talking straight let's start with the most famous of temples in Ujjain - THE MAHAKALESHWARA, one of the 12 jyotirlingas considered to be most sacred places of hindu worship. If you visit this temple, Don't miss the Bhasma Aarti, it's a life time experience and after this famous temple you can go about as many temples as you want - Onkareshwara (the famous boat ride), Bade Ganeshji ka Mandir,Kaal bhairav temple,Harsiddhi temple (check out God of death at its peak power with wine disappearing when touched with lips of Mahakaal idol), Gola temple, Navgraha temple (temple devoted to nine planets considered sacred in Hindu religion), Mangalnath, Gopal temple, Siddhavata, Chintaman Ganesh and many more ....absolutely uncountable. You can travel for a month and still find a temple you haven't visited.

One advice if you wish to travel to these places have a bus, taxi, auto rickshaw hired for a day.By absolutely no means you can go from one place to other searching for vehicle every time.

Hotels : Ranges from cheap to high class.

Food : Purely vegetarian and variety from plain home cooked to spicy snacks at very very cheap prices.

In one line one can explain Ujjain as a peaceful, holy place, an absolute must visit for all religious people looking for life time experience.

My tryst with Simhastha-Kumbh Mela
Apr 30, 2004 02:34 AM 5961 Views

The holy city of Ujjain where Simhastha Maha Kumbh is been hosted every 12 years. It is not comfortable to describe my experience of Kumbh, like any other holy place?one has to get there to really understand the exclusiveness of the event.

I have been told that people struggle to witness a single Kumbh in there whole lifespan and only the fortunate enough actually reaches there. They say that all the wrongdoings/sins are washed away from the soul once a holy dip is taken in waters of the Kshipra River during Kumbh.

However, for me the greater of the joy was to visit the place and see devotees everywhere. It was endless amount of sacrifice, sufferings, patience, devotion, happiness , et al- that one sees on faces of everyone there chanting mantras seeking blessings and as they return after taking the dip?the satisfaction on there faces as if all there wishes been fulfilled.

I started feeling how lucky I am to get all the good things of life. I saw large group of devotees coming with big cloth pouches on there head and walking in the craziest of summer right at mid-noon as the hot summer wind blew well enough not even letting me give a second thought of switching of the car-ac or to stop and exchange the driver?s seat with dad. There were devotees coming all on there feet seen even when Ujjain was 20-30 kms far off.

Moreover, those who got there from train were all over the roofs of train compartments, right at the door?only quarter of there one foot inside and rest swinging out of the train, hanging by holding the window... For once a while I thought what was so great about getting such bizarre motivations among these followers to go to any length of suffering happily and reach to feel so blessed.

There were different tents of akharas (classified groups of saints and sadhus following a particular way of teaching/ way of preaching) with all the amenities. The head or Guru of the group giving lessons on how to get rid of worldly difficulties and sorrows, as I walked down the path with the loud speaker helping in making me listen even when one don?t want to give them any heed. They all talked about the same thing?to get the negative aspects out ... the usual things in plain language so that everyone could understand.

We (mom, dad,me and my cousin) took the holy dip around 2pm and then went to Mahakal Temple ?it was a long walk of about a kilometer to reach Ramghat where the holydip is taken. We didn?t went for the Shahi Snan?days conferred to be especially more auspicious and also days which have records of stampede coz of crowds that outnumber any imagination?just to give an idea?on the last shahi snan(in first week of May) its predicted that around 1crore devotees would take bath on a single day.

It was not very crowded when we took bath and so even with vigilant lifesavers not allowing one to cross the safety rope I managed to sneak on the deep waters and swim a bit far from the shore.

There was girl taking-bath with her family and she slipped through the stairs, which were inside the water and just to suggest the promptness of lifesavers?there were four of them holding the girl even before the family members figured out what happened.

The trip reinforced my faith in all spiritual aspects not because I blindly believe in them. I believe in them, firstly, because they are the sole medium that binds all the people (of my religion) so closely to collectively lay there faith and stand as a cohesive unit. Secondly, I saw poor people having lights of hope, excitement, achievement in there eyes and anything that makes them happy is divine??coz wot they have in plenty is hope and they are rewarded for it.

The management was in mass scale and so spoke a lot about quantity and not about quality?quite logical. Large number of policemen all around the city?everywhere, most of the time stopping the vehicles 4-5kms before any place that one wants to reach and so anyone going for a visit shall be prepared for walks, keep those cool summer full kurtas out they look great in summer and they help in cooling of the sweat too.

Do plan for at least a day of stay there so that you can grab the night to look around the kumbh mela area?it?s in around an area exceeding 10kms with small circles of shops and of course the preaching centers of different gurus. Everything is about catering to huge number of people?be it parking space, number of shops, places to eat, temples,... There are more than 200 temples in Ujjain though we just went to one?the main temple of Lord Shiva?Mahakaleshwar temple.

We been to Ujjain in past and the rest was all visited before?if one want to visit them add one day more. About the hotels?there are cpl of good hotels and lots of newly made ones sprouting everywhere?they say that hotels are made in 10yrs of time especially to cater to the one month of Sinhastha that comes once in 12yrs. A double room with a/c would cost u around 2,500rupees on normal sinhasta day and on shahi snan day that will go up to 4k-5k per day.

I found hotel Ashray in the freeganj area having good food, dunno about the lodging but looked not bad from the promptness of services. Yatriniwas of the tourism department would be a good choice too.

The Ujjain cultural festival was going on, I was impressed by the performance of a play by group called Mrignayani from Indore. That was the first play that I saw which was done professionally?great light and sound arrangements and knowing that it was open-house play they rightly didn?t had dialogues but only music.

I went on 13th April--those were early days for kumbh and so not much rush, the water in the holy river was clean too.
