Charged subscription without my knowledge
Mar 12, 2017 10:25 AM 4663 Views

I was just looking over my yearly statements and noticed charges for magazines that I do receive, but at inflated prices. For example Time magazine I had order at a promotional rate of$20 and realize that they have charged me$34, twice this year. This is not what my agreement with the magazine was & I'm calling on Monday see what the deal it. This also happened with Real Simple, which was suppose to be$5 & Wired magazine as well. I am canceling all my subscriptions with them.

Do not subscribe TIME in India
Jul 24, 2013 10:20 AM 8759 Views

I am a subscriber of TIME MAGAZINE . I received my magazine for few weeks and then stopped receiving it . Further, as the so called EXCLUSIVE OFFER FOR SELECTED PROFESSIONALS the they offered wheeled Carryon Set was of very poor quality and not of what they are showing in the picture and never received a bonus gift too.

As far as I think these things happen only in INDIA. Though the Magazine is very good and had been in publication before I was born ( I am 62 now) Articles are very interesting and informative but as far as the rates are concerned its too expensive for Indian public.

One can get better magazines in lower cost compared to TIME. India Today magazine is so cheap and informative , THE WEEK Magazine, what I mean to say is our Indian magazines are equally better than TIME and affordable by common Indian.

Since its American Publication we get the articles of round the world which our Indian magazines lack. I will be the last pers

on to subscribe to TIME again. K.K.Agarwal

Do not subscribe

I am a big fan of Time magazine but it's subscription service in India is terrible. The subscription offers give you about 50% discount but you will get less than half the issues (and very few of them on time).

My experience: In the two months of subscription (8 issues) 3 issues were received and only 1 was on schedule. There are 5 issues missing and the support website is very poor. The customer support (over email) will often not be able to find your subscription information and may not even reply to your polite emails.

Dissatisfied with your customer response
Mar 05, 2012 03:09 PM 12167 Views

I just love your magazine in every aspect and have deep respect for it. Unfortunately my free gifts along with one year subscription have not been received for last 2 years. I have regularly followed it but am ashamed to tell you that nothing has happened on this.

A gift does not mean much to me but one feels low if a response of this quality is received from such a prestigious house.

Please do not let your reputation go down.

Never opt long term subscription with India Today
Feb 03, 2012 11:50 PM 11943 Views

I would like to mention that the following review is a combination of what I feel about the magazine itself and also about the media house that sells this magazine in our country.

With respect to the magazine, the content of magazine is good, from a quality perspective. The topics are thoroughly researched and written well by the authors. Some of the columns are of very high standards. The downside is that the content is mainly USA centric and there are too many ads for a magazine of that size.

Now, a bit about India Today group, who market this magazine on their website. I'm not sure what kind of business they are running. I wouldn't be exaggerating much if I say that they just ignore the complaints / feedback provided by the customers / readers. They have a so-called "Customer Care" just for the sake of having it.

It all started with a promotional e-mail that was sent to me by this media house, who do not even know what business ethics are. The e-mail mentioned that I would get certain discount on annual subscription of TIME magazine and would get a free gift as well. It clearly mentioned that I could cancel the subscription anytime if I don't like the magazine and there are no strings attached.

I purchased an annual subscription and started receiving the magazine. They sent me the free gift after 4 months from the start of the subscription. After 6 months from the start of subscription, I wanted to cancel my subscription and requested for the same, citing the reason that the content is USA centric and there are too many ads.

Initially they mentioned that I cannot cancel since I have received a free gift(some sub-standard bags). When I insisted that nothing of that sort was mentioned to me initially, they agreed to cancel the subscription. They mentioned that the refund amount would be sent to me after 2 months. It has been 8 months since they made that commitment, but I'm still waiting for that refund amount.

I have been sending e-mails regularly to check the status(have sent at least 20 e-mails until now), but the so-called customer care either ignores my e-mails completely or once in 2 - 3 months replies back saying that they are processing that refund.

Towards the end, I would like to request all readers not to go for any long term subscription with India Today group. I wouldn't wish that any other reader goes through the pain I have been going through, after making a mistake of purchasing a long term subscription with this media house.

ALIENS WILL CHANGE OUR LIFE LET US SAY WELCOME AND
Nov 29, 2009 08:34 PM 11984 Views

It is not necessary to express whether one belive in the existance of aliens or living beings in this universe other than our earth people.

The question is no more whether aliens exist or not but when we ourself are aliens to this world what more evidance is needed.

QUESTION ONE MAY ASK IS HOW IS IT POSSIBLE ON THIS EARTH WE ARE ALIENS.

Entire human beings have one common fact that is can speak, imagine think and repeat also, none of the animals on this earth can speak, wear clothe nor imitate anything that is man like.

WHEN WILL ALIENS WILL VISIT OUR EARTH.

The one who came to dinner without invitation, is being followed by the aliens, since aliens are millions of light years away from us, the shadow image of theirs thruough their thought mind enter our mind and in this way only we can share the experience of their presence.

They are watching us and unable to set right financial crisis because we have to ask.

Help one can get only when u ask, in the same way they are like bankers and if all of us send messages to visit this world then they will send rockets in infinite speed and make us happy.

How to send messages to them.

yes I have been sending messages to them but since I dont have their mobile number it is just flowing in the space but though they recieve my pleading unab le to find out the source of the message.

THIS UNIVERSE HAS BILLIONS OF ALIENS.

Let us pray or at least attempt through govt help and for this we need very sophisitcated software which I am trying to invent but since I am too poor in software reading or application I need someone to help me to reach them and get the enough help from them.

HOW I AM SURE LET ME ANSWER.

I have been facinated on extra terrestrail civilisation since my child hood, it means I have contact with them but unable to dicipher and once it is decoded just by typing in the internet will be able to see and talk to them either with sign language or with translated from english to theirs.

They are very handsome.

Now I am giving you a sample of them how they look

1 Both men and woman are very beautiful each of them are hundreds of times more prettier than ash or

any of your favorite stars.

2 They have extremely attractive personality and just one pretty woman or girl can storm entire our earth.

3 The thing is they are waiting for my invitation to visit earth at least one hundred paris of all ages may visit

this earth if my message reaches them by the help of hundreds of software experts.

The total effect of the visit of aliens on to our earth will be as follows.

They have got power to change what ever we have problems, for example they can work in one hour what we need ten years to fullfill any kind of earth work.

They can move the mountains, hills and even change the depth of sea level.

They can shift entire city for example Mumbai either near delhi; or near calcuatta in a minute.

They are more powerfull at least god like.

all we need to tell them is work to set right starting from pollution to road repairs and even can get from the excavating soil for metro and they can assemble an iron and steel factory in minutes.

they will come too soon and even will bring from with them so fast computer.The hand held mobile what they have is million times faster than the super computer invented by IBM.

they can wipe out all the tears the mankind is suffering.

they can bring everything we want to ask or dream of.

they can build billions of houses all in a day.

any takers if please send me coded software to reach them.

Time is now, Yesterday is history.
Dec 30, 2007 02:45 PM 11145 Views

Time is now, Yesterday is history.

This magazine contains 65 pages roughly to a issue, it cost me in my country around US$ 5 per issue, costly! There is a ideal state of affairs to everything, emotions etc., Sometimes we fall in love with the ideal at hand, We dont want to give it up even under duress.

Time magazine, I feel has a ideal to convert its readers into Republican or Democrat. I know Bruce Crumley, Richard Lacayo or Mr.Simon Robinson write very interesting articles in Time, but I feel the climax of their writings always makes you a Republican or a Democrat, but of course all this could be my feelings only.

Time Magazine held appeal to many of us since ages now, I wont let a old issue or new issue pass between my hands without reading a few pages from it, Mostly I love reading Front to Back cover full pages. The articles are small and very interesting. Almost everything contained in here has some interest to me or someone else in the world everywhere. I saw few journalist from my country echo sentiments expressed in Time magazines.

You can say this magazine outlines hot topics of our times with a eye to the future. I remember very fondly the cover story written by Mr.Aryan Baker and super photos of Sarah Caron of Mrs. Benazir Bhutto recently. She was looking so rested and charming in her photo, the rest she took from politics increased her freshness looks, this was evident from her picture on cover and the inside picture. Alas! she is no more to be photographed for Time or any other magazine

of our world. I will save the issue no.21, volume 170 of 2007.

A brief description about Time Magazine contents, the main page headings and the write up we can expect in each issue is

as follows:

INBOX( to reach inbox you can write to:

letters@time.com

*)

BREIFINGS( there are so many snippets contained under these pages)

VERBATIM( This is always interesting to me)

PEOPLE

MILESTONES

APPRECIATION

POST CARD( A country a event or a place is covered under this)

UNITED STATES( Sometimes covered by Mr.Michael Duffy)

MIDDLE EAST( Sometimes covered by Mr. Bill Powell)

LIFE( society - Science - Health - Law - Environment - Religion)

Any one topic from the listed topics under life are covered by a eminent time magazine reporters.*

SPECIAL REPORT

Best Countries for Business This report was covered in the following manner: Alex Perry wrote about Mauritius, Zoe Eisenstein Wrote about Angola Denmark was written by Mr.Justin fox.

ABC(Argentina, Brazil, Chile)

This latin american countries were covered by Mr.Tim Padgett, China by Kathleen Kingsbury.

Following this special report, there are usually special report in each issue, it depends on the editor to choose which subject to cover in special report. Following these pages you will come to:

GLOBAL INVESTING, sometimes covered by Mr.Jim Federick.

BOOKS AND ART

was covered by Richarld Corliss, here I would like to mention the Steve Martins(Comedy Actor) memori's was a interesting  read, I was curios about Steve Martin always, he spent a lot of time in Walt Disney, that is where he got his fun loving Nature.

NOW I come to the section I enjoyed under the ART, it was about Mr.J.M.W.Turner, the painter and a brief sketch of his art and its standing in our world, there were a few pictures of his paintings, works like SNOW STORM(Hannibal and his armies crossing the Alps) was a special canvas to observe and watch. Fanning the fire, Caernarvon Castle, I could not forget the lights in the pictures of canvases of Mr.J.M.W.Turner, I think looking at the pictures of artwork of this artist was worth the high price I paid for Time Magazine.

I buy this magazine now and then and run thru it back to back covers, after the sections covered above, there is usually a GLOBAL ADVISOR covering travel snippets about places under sub headings of FOOD, GADGETS, SYLE, LEISURE.

Then follows Time Traveller a section describing different places on our planet, then there is DIVERSIONS, this is  covered by Mr.David Kaufman sometimes.

Now we have reached towards the last page, this page is called as ESSAY, it depends on the editor to choose whose essay  to feature here, I read a essay by Mr.Liam Fitzpatrick, he was talking about health care, smoking harms etc.,

Now that I am reaching the end of the review, I would like to state here my reason for using names of the article writers is because we always think TIME as a BLOCK of news, but actually it is made attractive by efforts of many people under the umbrella of TIME magazine, this way I want to highlight the names of the contributors to time.

I dont have an Idea how many people write for TIME magazine around the world, but I guess there may be lot of people, last but not the least, did you know the red border on the front cover of time magazine is a registered trade mark, same as the yellow triangle being the trade mark of National Geographer.

I can tell you finally, you never know what this magazine is going to cover next, whatever it does, it sets a trend for many other local magazines in the world. This magazine may add to your knowledge or may give you a new prespective, it has new things in store each month. Happy reading.

*Yo! time is a tool, use it well or otherwise, only time will tell.

Kumaran sir has done a good job.THe paintings seen on the site https://ufoindia.org/article_ps_ancientufos.htm

shows ufo's in them .So was ufo incidents happening in the past and was indian people communicating with the aliens from different earth like planets on the universe??

there is also much said about sophiticated technology used by Indians in the past.But now no one knows it.

The matrix moovie by watchostky brothers is based on an Indian concept called Veda Vasishta.

And also the kumaran sir says about the deadly wepons used by rama in Ramayan is equivalent to todays missiles.

So where have all the indian concepts,technologies ,ablities,etc have gone.

someone has to take up this subject seriosly and start investigating to find out more traces and clues about all these things.

i have only so much to say.bye .thanks for kumaran sir for bringing out the artile in time magazine.

When are the aliens coming?
May 12, 2006 07:49 PM 11099 Views

Finally I can order the specific editions of the Time magazine online. That's one advantage. Order any edition you want right from the 1900 to now.. Unfortunately this review is more about an article of specific interest I read after ordering it.. There was no specific category under which I could write this review... Read this review in leisure not when you are short of time!

I am one of those who believes life exists elsewhere too. I have always been interested in this topic and been reading a lot on it. You may think I am crazy, but sometimes when you think about it the evidence has always been there. Besides, my thinking is based on what is overwhelming evidence, not experiences of a few conmen. More people have attempted to perpetrate alien hoaxes recently– Jonathan Reed, Lazar, Ray Santilli and others - and the media has encouraged them especially shows such as the Art Bell show whose ratings solely depends on sensationalist cases.

Another point is that religion has been in the forefront opposing the alien theory. Ever read of Christ’s last awakening? How did Lord Rama die? A lot of them point to aliens being the guiding souls to our religions. There’s an explanation offered to why? But so many? Why did they opt to give us diverse religions (if they did) is another question which might boggle the mind.

Before we proceed, let me tell you that I am trying to give you events of mass sightings, if you find it funny or extremely crazy, then it’s perfectly alright, because it does seem so even to me.

All across history there have been instances of encounters. Remember Alexander the Great? On his march eastwards, his army had a friendly brush with “flying saucers with lights” as documented by his historian. There are other replete instances in history where you see dark clouds and “lights moving fast” during an important time in history (according to historians). That’s not proof enough. Let’s check for modern mass sightings…

The first modern day UFO encounter which occurred would be the Roswell incident. (A few episodes of the serial Taken are based on it). In 1947, a saucer seems to have crashed in the sleepy town of Roswell. Earlier during the same period, it was reportedly sighted in nearby Mexico and other regions. (Google 1947+Roswell)

The crash was first spotted by a Shepherd or farmer to the sheriff. It hogged the headlines in the local newspapers for the next two days, though it was snuffed out on the national news by the army. This was also an important time because it was the first which lead to their forming of a secret group to investigate all things alien. I didn’t believe the numerous websites first (Google 1947 + Roswell) In fact I thought it was marketing for their museum which is now opened by the public! (Which includes images on how the aliens looked)

Later I came across an edition of the Time magazine which reported the same. (Online link - https://cnn.com/US/9706/18/ufo.report/)

The evidence was pretty overwhelming and the line of reasoning pretty simple. If you can get a copy or better still subscribe online, then you can read about the crash. This incident is very famous for a variety of reasons. First, because it was the first incident which received the widest coverage. Secondly it appears that the US government decided to open a dedicated wing for this in secret. Also remember that Roswell was a sleepy town. The entire town can vouch for this incident. The incident was hushed up by the military claiming it to be a weather balloon.

The second incident worth mentioning witnessed by a lot of people in the Sweden/ Norway regions. Though this was supposed to have occurred earlier, the frequency was such that it appeared all through 1946 and was reported even upto 1949. ''Ghost Rockets'' - a number of these undefined missile type crafts were seen going over the regions and yet crashed into Norwegian lakes. Imagine rockets going faster than the speed of light over countries all to fall into a lake! Splash! The military authorities did try some stunts at recovery and the lake was banned for quite some time to the public. But what recovery do you expect from the depths of the lake especially when it is covered by freezing snow throughout? Not much news on what happened later, but yes, it was witnessed by at least three countries!

The third confirmed mass sighting occurred in Bihar, India (1954)! The list of confirmed witnesses is between 500 - 700 people. Ijapada Chatterjee (supposed engineer manager) was in his office. He worked at a mine outside Manbhum. The miners brought to his notice a saucer shaped object outside. Rushing outdoors, Chatterjee ''watched a saucer-shaped object descend to an altitude of about 500 feet. The UFO hovered, then soared upwards at terrific speed, causing a tremendous gust of wind.'' (That was in his own words) It seemed to have hovered for quite some time; ''then, suddenly, the two sides seemed to get inflated. This was followed by what looked like smoke billowing from the two ends. Immediately the object soared upwards at an incredible speed.'' (Quoted from https://project1947.com/fig/1954a.htm) The object was seen over a mine which has supplied berylium for the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.

Incidentally, movie director Steven Spielberg is supposed to have received proof way back. It not only explains his fascination with the subject, but also has shown them in most movies even when not required.. Otherwise explain to me what was the necessity of bringing aliens into the story in AI (artificial Intelligence - a story about a child robot’s love to his mum?)

The below site makes an excellent case study for UFOs in history. See the centuries old paintings very carefully and make your judgment. A must visit site for a historical perspective.

https://ufoindia.org/article_ps_ancientufos.htm

The below site has documented history and their own theory as to what actually occurred.

https://crystalinks.com/vedic.html

Relevant quotes from the crystal links site – “It is evident that ancient Indians flew around in these vehicles, all over Asia, to Atlantis presumably; and even, apparently, to South America. Writing found at Mohenjodaro in Pakistan (presumed to be one of the ''Seven Rishi Cities of the Rama Empire'') and still undeciphered, has also been found in one other place in the world: Easter Island! Writing on Easter Island, called Rongo-Rongo writing, is also undeciphered, and is uncannily similar to the Mohenjodaro script.”

That makes sense historically since we did have seven major civilizations. How were they connected? But what happened to the civilizations? None of them are on the map now…. The site theorizes…

The Ramayana, Mahabarata and other texts speak of the hideous war that took place, some ten or twelve thousand years ago between Atlantis and Rama using weapons of destruction that could not be imagined by readers until the second half of this century.

Do we have any single book which has more information on this war? The Iliad does speak of war. So does the Ramayan, Mahabharata and a whole lot of other epics but none describe any particular single incident which might have impacted globally. That could be true if there was a lack of survivors. But one thing common in all mythologies/epics are the list of special characters with superhuman powers - Ravana the 10 headed demon, Hanuman, Ghatotkacha, the Minotaur, the Greek gods, the Egyptian gods. Take any mythology and you have atleast one of them.

Time Asia - truly Asian
Oct 01, 2003 07:14 PM 10385 Views

I am hooked to Time magazine ever since I started reading it by taking a sneak peak into my father’s bedroom as he allowed us to read it during weekends only, and I, being a pampered boy of the house, sometimes stealing my fathers’ copy of Time magazine.

Now, since December 2002, I am a proud subscriber of this truly remarkable weekly. It gives you an inside out coverage of the whole week passed by and their in-depth coverage is fascinating.

Why truly Asian? Because it has everything about Asia.

To start with, I would like to go through the detailed sections of the magazine, and let the readers decide and give judgment by rating on my review.

The TIME TRAVELER Section: In this section, as the name suggests, you would probably required some thought provocation, because every week, a different writer will take you to a journey full of euphoria and enthusiasm. In THE PERFECT SNORE ‘Cruising via Containership’, writer takes you from Java, across the Indian Ocean and through the Arabian Sea to Bombay on a freighter named M.V. Ingrid Oldendorff Or HOW WILL CHINA MANAGE ECOTOURISM? ‘Paradise or Parking Lots?’. The writer, Susan Jakes takes you to China to see how will Chinese manage tourism and help protect China’s natural wonders or destroy the places that visitors are bused in to admire?

The NOTEBOOK Section: Its about politics, terrorism, milestones everywhere in this section. Be it Cheney, Vajpayee or Musharraf, from Indonesia to Indo-Pak relations, Kim Jong II and his countrymen or detention of a Muslim cleric in Indonesia or When India and Pakistan are at each other’s throats, as they’ve been for………. In the Milestones, you take a note of who paid what price for their wrongdoings and who died next door. Its all here in this section.

The HEALTH Section: The outbreak of SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) in China, and the world watched closely throughout the outbreak to the subtle disappearance of SARS through media or everything else. I followed it with Time magazine.

The ASIA Section: Now comes the Asian section, which is what I always look for in a weekly Time magazine. Is it about Hong Kong? No, about Pakistan, no no, its about Indonesia, what, no way, who told you that? I know now that its totally different from the other every week in Time, this week its about “Is Pakistan a Friend or a Foe?” before that it was like “Know your rights – Hong Kongers are going to hold Beijing to its promise of full direct elections for the territory”.

Now this is what I call magnificently covering every nook and corner of a vast region, with integrity and loyalty.

The magazine does not end here, yes, its only in the middle and the other sections are like: GLOBAL AGENDA (mostly deep politics but closely linked with nature on the whole), THE ARENA, MIDDLE EAST, SPORTS, BUSINESS, CINEMA, SOCIETY, MOVIES, MUSIC, ART, BOOKS, YOUR TIME, PEOPLE, ESSAY etc.

etc. is for those who think that the world does not end here, but its only the beginning for their creativity.

The Time magazine is a real treat, sometimes it gives you bleak picture about life. But, after all, this is what life is all about.

Great magazine, full votes.

Why i hate time ?
Jul 30, 2003 08:56 AM 9980 Views

Straight from my heart..

Time magazine, is one of the most famous magazines. I used to be a avid reader of Time until a long time..But then the article about A.B.Vajpayee was published. Well, Vajpayee does drink, he has health problems, and is a bit old.. But then people wouldn't have elected him if he was so reckless and if he was unable to do his job.. One stupid writer thought a nation of one billion people (alright I know everyone didnt vote for him) are wrong and he alone is clever than than these third-world country people. I had respect for time for long time, but after the article was published I stopped reading time.. May be it is a good magazine for most of the readers out there, but I simply couldn't digest the fact that, a carelessly written stupid article was published in the magazine..

But then out indian counterparts are not far behind..

timesofindia.com and rediff.com are more of tabloids than news sites.

I guess it's a fashion to write against India.

Heres a part taken from a review (https://mouthshut.com/readreview/24144-1.html) by angel009 (https://mouthshut.com/user/angel009.html)

(May be we are talking about the same magazine)

It was very well written so thought to cite it here..

Last month, a famous American magazine carried a feature on the septuagenarian Indian prime Minister, Mr. AB Vajpayee.Their main concern was the wisdom of having such an unfit man at the pinnacle of power, with his finger poised over the nuclear button.Its all very fine to cite the “freedom of the press” and say that the magazine has a right to air its views, but in this case, I’m saddened to think that the general American public reading this article will have this image of a reckless, foolhardy Indian state, which ‘knoweth not what it does”.

I guess I will get a lot of ''NR'' for this review, but then I wanted to say how I felt.

Read TIME in time
Jun 19, 2003 07:12 AM 12430 Views

TIME is a news magazine, founded by Briton Hadden (1898-1929) and Henry R. Luce (1898-1967). It is an American news magazine with coverage of world affairs. When compared with other news magazines, it has many interesting articles and features on latest scientific developments. It is my favourite magazine. Its every issue has 56 pages, and each page, whether having an interesting advertisement or an article or feature, is highly readable. Its production quality is high-tech.

TIME's Editor-in-Chief is Norman Perlstine, and Editorial Director is John Huey. Isolde Motley is the Corporate Editor. TIME INC. INTERNATIONAL's President and CEO is Michael Pepe, Chairman & CEO is Ann S. Moore. In between, there are 5 Executive Vice-Presidents.

The Editor of TIME ASIA is Karl Taro Grenfeld. The Deputy Editor is Wiliam Gren. Then there are Executive Editor for Asia, Associate Editor, Art Director, Staff Writers, Writer Reporters, Deputy Art Director, Assistant Director, Senior Reporter,Reporters, Deputy Picture Editor, News Desk Manager and Copy Chief.

It has 3 International Editors, Editors-at-Large, Senior Editors and other supportive Staff.

Let us not forget that all these people edit, produce and sell TIME all over the world.

I have been subscribing to TIME since many years. I have before me its issue dated June 9. The Cover Design is bold with a photograph of a US soldier attempting to control a crowd in Baghdad. The masthead has the name of the magazine printed in red. It is about 1.5 inches high. The next line in the masthead is ''THE MESS IN IRAQ.'' In the top right hand corner is printed Kim Jong Il's Dirty Money Machine. Towards the bottom of the right hand corner are printed ''So far, there's precious little peace to keep'' and ''Where are those weapons of mass destruction?''

The Contents Page has a photograph with the caption ''BIG MAN: Sapp has become Japan's favorite American Import.'' Then there are features on Japan, Asia, Iraq, China, United States, Army, Cinema, Art, Movies, Letters and Time Traveller. The Page on Letters is quite interesting. In Page 9 there is an announcement on 'TIME Readers' Travel Choice Awards, and the winner gets a Cyber-shot P10 Digital Camera.

Its issue of June 6, posted at Calcutta on June 6 itself reached me on June 17. Eleven days from Calcutta to Angul ? Is it because the magazine comes by Book Post that is Second Class Mail? Could the Distribution Department of TIME do something in the matter ?

Each issue of the magazine costs Rs.75 in India. Its annual subscription is Rs.2,160, with the gift of an attractive wrist watch. I have received the watch and it is on my wrist now.

Any news magazine has to be read in time, and more so TIME, because its name is TIME.

In the earlier 90's, if you wanted a good sense of what's happening around the world, you used to either read the TIME or listen to BBC. However, after 9/11 , TIME has become a kind of american mouthpiece. Even TIME asia has comments like, eg... jakarta is a sure no-no for american tourists. And to think that TIMe is regarded as the best weekly in the world. I would definitely recommend NEWSWEEK over TIME. TIME has also decided that contervorsial comments are good for sales leaving their age old practice of 'good reporting' to the wind. Time should get back to the basics of asking the right questions and finding the right answers. Time is more concerned about Northern America to be concerned about the rest of the world...

Not for Indians
Jun 15, 2003 04:28 PM 9470 Views

Time as the name suggests should be keeping us up to date with time.It is but not with Asian time but American time.I have been reading Time magazine since quite some time and have seen that inspite of being an Asian edition it hardly covers much of the issues in Asia and even if it does it doesnt give more than 2 pages to it.Not that 2 pages arent enough but when you compare it with the 5 to 6 pages dedicated to Mr.George Bush and his politics in every issue then I guess it is not enough.If they call it an Asian edition then it should be an Asian edition and not an American oriented Asian edition.They should learn to cover all Asian related issues and not American politics.It would also increase their subscriber base in India.Another thing is that it is too costly and most Indians cant afford a 90 buck magazine per week.The only good thing about it is that the paper quality is excellent.I will advice you to think twice before you plan to buy it.

TIME has stopped
Jun 15, 2003 06:27 AM 9442 Views

I had a look at the reviews about TIME and I do agree that they are the first to report on the latest events. But that is where it stops. I think because they have to respond to the world events at short notice, their research is very ordinary at times. TIME also covers some issues that may not be needed to be published immediately and looking at the quality of those articles again it seems they are in a hurry to publish. Whenever I see an article about India it seems they try to cover a lot of ground or probably heavily edit the contents that the articles look very patchy and very superficial. It is also amazing to see that only very few Indians have made it to the cover of TIME. All their recent issues covering Iraq lacked much substance. They do a good job of publishing pictures from the war-zone but it only caters to a small percentage of world population. Do not get me wrong TIME does a great job but they could do with a bit more research, then they will not be needed to sell TIME as package with watches, radios and gold pens.

Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested. ~~ Sir Francis Bacon

Be as careful of the books you read, as of the company you keep; for your habits and character will be as much influenced by the former as by the latter. ~~Paxton Hood

~~~ ~~ ~INTRODUCTION ~~~ ~~ ~
Take a look at the quote from Sir Francis Bacon. How true it is, though he was not very aware of magazines that time? The same can be applied to the Time Magazine. It is definitely something worth looking forward to, every week. Something that gives you weekly dose of important things that happen around the world. Something that gives you a visual splendor via the breath taking pictures. Something in a true critical sense when it comes to unbiased opinions about certain critical issues. While it does take a stand on certain issues (Obviously due to the writer’s siding and bias) when they are published, it makes sure it doesn’t touch the fabric of dignity of most of its readers by not being overtly controversial. Time is an exceptional magazine and is the one of biggest weekly magazine subscribed in the world. The cult following the readers has for this magazine is a classic example. The honor and fame the “Time Person of the year” carries tells you volumes about the might of this magazine. Like tide, time never waits for anyone to give you the great weekly dose of intellectual writing.
As usual, we shall get into some history lesson. Shall we. (Am I making my history teacher proud?)
~~~ ~~ ~A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME ~~~ ~~ ~

Well, if you think I was gonna talk about Stephen Hawking’s master blster, “surely you must be joking Mr.Feynman”, Well, I thought of making pun using couple of my favorite books. Look forward for those reviews. Let us delve into the history, shall we?

Time started off in a small way with some 3700 odd issues in March 3, 1923 with an idea to chronicle history. It’s original motto was to shape the worldly opinion of the readers and for “enlivening the intellect of Time readers”. Now it is being printed in 400 locales with a readership of 30 million. It has a circulation of 4+ million in US and about 1.7 million worldwide. It is being managed by 13 “bossmen” or the “Managing Editor” who makes sure this magazine continues to captivate its readers.

~~~ ~~ ~PERSONAL MUSINGS OF A TIMED MAN ~~~ ~~ ~
Well, I was politically incorrect. Weren’t I? My fling with Time Magazine started around the same time I started my fling with National Geographic (read my review https://mouthshut.com/readreview/39607-1.html). I became a regular subscriber in 1997, when I got an offer I couldn’t refuse (Sorry Don Vito!!). I happened to browse CNN, which is part of the Time Warner Group and got 4 free issues for trial. Immediately after I read (remember, I was all aware about might of Time), I felt that I was glad to pay $30 dollars per year, which is peanuts compared to the wealth of knowledge and intellect you get. I have been a regular reader since then and have lever missed out reading a single (well few may be, as I never read an article, but got hold of them J) issue of Time so far.
Time is truly refreshing for a person with thirst to know every bit of trivia about everything. It is just a treasure for me. Obviously this will be different for different people. I have had a wonderful time so far and hope it continues.
Let us delve into features shall we?
~~~ ~~ ~WEEKLY FEATURES ~~~ ~~ ~

Cover Story

This is the best part of the magazine. Truly an exceptional feature which is well researched, well composed and organized. This makes you become a person well aware about a particular topic through the microscopic eye of a time reporter. An example is the “Matrix Reloaded” review of May 12th Issue named unlocking the matrix. All the Matrix novices will know what this is in 30 minutes by reading this article. This is how good and simplified these articles are. This makes the readers love this magazine much more.

Note Book

This is a diary like feature of a well known Times reporter and is well stocked in information. Something cherishing and informative to read about, this is something I always look forward to. You have exceptional quotes by people all over the world, half page reports, facts and figures and what not. This is a truly amazing feature of this magazine. No one does it better than Time.

World

This is my favorite part of the magazine. This is the first article I read about, all the times. Fairly concise and to the point, it explores worldly issues in an almost unbiased manner (I still think some reporters take a personal stance which the editors let go due to the might of the reporter and the freedom of expression!) You get to know what is happening Ougadougou to Kaoolinaat-Nunaat. You can know what happened in Gujarat to what happened in Buenos Aires. While they cover the topics of prime importance for that week, it is always refreshing to read some.

Nation

This is similar to the world category. It analyzes the happening of the nation where it is printed in a beautiful manner.

Other topics include

=>Business – A weekly dose of excellent business article(s)

=>Lifestyle – Tells you about technology, leisure and things to improvise your lifestyle. Health also forms a part

=>Sport – What else do you expect here?

=>Arts – Know about Movies, Books, Music etc

=>Your Time - Food, Health, Technology, Money and the last two pages which make it a treat to read, People & Essay. This is something I look forward to for my snippets and trivia.

~~~ ~~ ~BOTTOM LINE & CONCLUSION ~~~ ~~ ~
If you ask me if I am a “Times” aficionado, I would say “yes”. Without Times, my week is not complete. Like the “Raymonds” commercial, I feel a complete man only when I have read “Times” for the week. This has been the case, thanks to Internet, whenever I never had a chance to read the glossy print version.
Another thing to look and cherish is the Times Person of the Year. This is widely looked forward feature and they have never made a decision in the recent past except for 2001 for obvious reasons. The Yearbook Times publishes is also equally excellent. I happened to go to the Sep-11th memorial in the Smithsonian Museum and happened to see most of the coverage done by Times Reporters and Magazine.
They have covered everything that has happened in a grand scale. Would I recommend time? Yes of course. I were to give a gift to someone I like, I would buy him or her a yearly subscription of Time. That’s how I like it.
Time : A Well Established Weekly
Jun 10, 2003 07:52 AM 11549 Views
Time is a long established news weekly published from the USA. This 70 page weekly is strong on current affairs,indeed that really is its ''bread and butter''. Each issue will have a dozen or so feature articles covering diverse topics such as technology,international relations,trade,aid,economcs, finance,business,religion and the arts.
A recent issue,eg, has a number of stories devoted to the on going war against terrorism. There is a feature on Mullah Mohammed Omar,the leader of the Taliban, another entitled, '' Make Love,Then War' which basically suggests it would be best to initially feed the Afghans and win their hearts and minds .
There are a number of articles looking at the investigations taking place into terrorism and three major stories under World. These include a article on Saudi Arabia, another dealing with the ban on beef in Japan and a further piece which looks at the issues and problems facing Pakistan.
The magazine has a letters section and an interesting section called World Watch. This contains a couple of dozen small news items from around the world. There are short pieces on Macedonia, Turkey, Zimbabwe, the Opposition victory in Bangladesh, Refugee problems in Nauru and a 100 word news item concerning the plane crash near the Black Sea. Another section Travel Watch contains short pieces on travels as well as links to travel web sites.
Time certainly does not overlook the arts. There is usually a review of a book or books, a story on music or a major musical event and a article on some aspect of entertainment. A recent issue looked at how Japan's Kano sisters have taken the world by storm. The back page is devoted to an essay,usually around 1,000 words in length and there is also a page devoted to people in the news.
Time is easily found at bookstores around the world although its subscription price is much lower than its retail price. All in all it is a good read,particularly if you enjoy reading current affairs and it has a wide geographical coverage.
Thanks for reading
Time is money
As a student in a University that boasted of a seven-floor library, I spent a lot of time there. This was mainly to do some work and study, but other factors that were an added bonus included the cute Erasmus exchange students and (lest I get carried away) the vast collection of international magazines. It was there that my love affair with the Time magazine started. I didn't have time to watch the news on the Telly, and so my weekly scan of Time ensured that I sounded intelligent when trying to chat up a cute guy at the union!!
Today, I am happily married and don’t need to chat up cute foreigners, but continue to find that Time is a source of intelligent and interesting articles relating to current affairs. The format is such that they have one main cover story and various regular features such as political news, an economic/financial review, a science related article, review of arts, music and culture and a sports related article.
I like the fact that I don’t have to worry about understanding the situation and then analyzing it. In every article there are these little boxes (in different colours to stand out from the main bit) with juicy extras. E.g, recently there was an article about the Roadmap to Peace (RTP) in the Middle East and an ancillary one that talked about Abu Mazer’s (also known as Mahmoud Abbas) relationship with Yasser Arafat and how that would affect the RTP. It contained intricate details of incidents that led up to the falling out of the two once-dear friends. That just helped set the scene for me to get a better understanding of the situation. Newspapers just don’t seem to do that! And for me, that level of detail and analysis was invaluable.
The Time edition I subscribe to is the European one and that’s an added bonus as although I get a roundup of world events, the focus is more on pan-European issues. Whether UK should join the Euro is now the question on every European’s lips and trust Time to have that as its cover story for the next week’s edition.
All in all it’s has a well-rounded content and I can rely on it for balanced opinions on current issues. I try and read most of the articles at home, but also carry a copy with me for when I use public transport. It is a useful way to while away time when the train is late - which if you live in UK - is a fact rather than exception.
