Not sure what people seeing in Tim Hortons
Jan 30, 2011 02:59 AM13342 Views

I am an avid Canadian coffee drinker but I avoid Tim Hortons at all costs. Their coffee always has a horrid bitter taste to it. I have heard from dietitians that Tim Hortons adds MSG to their coffee, but not sure if that is accurate - cannot prove it. Maybe that is why the taste seems so off. Regardless, the coffee has to be the worst available, but I believe people flock to TH because it is a low cost product.

If you want a good low cost coffee, then try McDonalds. It has much better coffee at a comparable price. Me, I am willing to trade off low cost for a better product. Second Cup is not much more expensive, but the product also rates in a 10 times better. Worth the extra 50 cents to me. I have to give Tim Hortons staff credit though - their service is always top notch. (even though recently I ordered a Steep Tea at the drive through and I was give black coffee!)

We got ripped off at tim's!
Jan 23, 2011 11:36 PM12861 Views

Dear friends: The server at the new Tim Horton's in syracuse did not honor our coupons and did not give us a receipt. The coupons were valid for a free donut, a $.99 coffee and a medium latte.

We were billed a total of $5.50. the food and beverages at Tim Horton's are delicious, however, we do not like being ripped off. Please forward a $5 gift certificate to: Bill Rosecrans; 412 Fay Rd.; Syracuse, N.Y. 13219 we also purchased a 20 oz. coffee as part of the order.

Grab a Tim's - Double Double!

Background on Tim Horton

Tim Horton founded Tim Horton's Inc., a coffee and donut shop, in 1964. Tim Horton was born in Cochrane, Ontario and grew up playing hockey in the small leagues of northern Ontario. He was drafted into the NHL by the Toronto Maple Leafs, with whom he played for seventeen years, winning four Stanley Cups. Early in the morning of February 21, 1974, while driving the QEW from Toronto to Buffalo in his Pantera sports car, a gift from Sabres' GM George ''Punch'' Imlach, Horton lost control, crashed, and was killed. He was negotiating a curve on the QEW where it crosses over Twelve Mile Creek in St. Catharines, lost control, and crashed into the Martindale Road overpass. A police officer pursuing Horton's vehicle said that he had been travelling at over one hundred miles per hour. There were also reports Horton had consumed a considerable amount of vodka, and was rumoured to have been taking pain killers due to a jaw injury suffered in a practice the day before. An autopsy report released 31 years after his death showed Horton had a blood-alcohol level of twice the legal limit. The blood test also showed signs of amobarbital, possibly a residue from the Dexamyl amphetamine pills that were found on Horton's body. The autopsy showed no indication he was taking painkillers. The entire NHL went into mourning after his death, especially the Buffalo Sabres, a group of young players for whom Horton had played a crucial role in maturing them into a group of stars who would reach the Stanley Cup finals the following season. Horton left behind a wife, four daughters and a son.

Horton was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977.

In 1965, Horton had partnered with investor Ron Joyce, who took over operations and expanded the chain into a multi-million dollar franchise.

Today, 'having a Tim's' is synonomous with having a coffee. In fact, I can't drive 10 minutes without seeing a Tim Horton's! Because most restaurants in Canada are now smoke free...you can enjoy the coffee without the disgusting smell of cigarettes!

The Food

Of course, Tim's is known for their coffee. The best way to have it is a double double. This means 2X the cream and 2X the sugar. But I found the coffee varies in it's taste. I have had some that taste fantastic, however, others were not as great. I think this has to do with the fact that each Tim's is individually franchised. Having individual owners means that there is no strict guidelines in how the coffee is made/how long it is kept on the pot etc. The donuts are great, no matter which Tim's you go to. Taste is very fresh.

Summary

When you visit Canada, you'll be sure to spot numerous Tim Horton's. When you order, act like you know what you're doing...just say 'Can I get a large double double?'

The reason I'm writing about Tim's today is because today Tim Horton's went public on the NYSE under the ticker symbol THI. The shares opened at $23.16US and closed at $28.17. They traded as high as $33 earlier in the session. Nearly 26.5 million shares were traded. Investors may have been buying based on the taste of the coffee!

Tim Hortons is our favourite place to go out for lunch, have a cup of coffee, or to pick up some cookies, muffins or donuts to take home.

The first thing you see on the door is the no smoking signs. When you go inside you will have to stand in line.

You'll notice that they clean the tables, as soon as a customer leaves.

You can eat in or take home your food. The donuts, muffins and cookies can be bought by the dozen, have dozen or just one.

The Drinks:

The serve all types of soda pop, juice, hot chocolate, and hot and cold coffee. I like the iced Cappuccinos are wonderful, on a hot day.

If you have taste Starbuck’s coffee, it doesn't compare to Tim Hortons.

The Donuts:

If you have tasted a Krispy Kreme donut, their donuts don't compare with the ones we buy here.

My husband the ones filled with fruit or cream, and I like the ones that are not filled, (chocolate, cinnamon, a french twist... etc.)

The Cookies:

There cookies are served as soon as they come out of the oven. I love the holes, (the centre of the donut that has been cut out), and the white chocolate and macadamia one the best. My husband likes the dark chocolate with chocolate chips.

The Muffins:

These are made fresh, and I like the orange and cranberry one, and my husband likes the bran with raison or the strawberry.

The Sandwiches:

You choose the type of bread you want. I like a tuna salad on a baguette and my husband likes the vegetable one that is served on a bagel.

The Soups:

There are two different soups made fresh each day. They also serve chile. The large soups and chile are served in a large bun, that has been hollowed out. The small order is in a bowl.

The Real Meal Deal:

You can have a soup, sandwich, donut and your choice of beverage for a cheaper price than you could buy them separately.

The Mugs:

Tim Hortons Mugs, are sold in a small, medium or large size. You use them when you are taking out your coffee, to keep the coffee warm.

Roll Down The Rim To Win Contest:

Once a year, everyone who buys a cup of coffee, (even if it is served in a cup or your mug), get a cardboard cup. You roll back the rim to see if you have won anything. You might win a cup of coffee or a truck.

I Hope:

If you are ever visiting Canada, I hope you will drop in to Tim Hortons.

Even if the contest isn't on you'll always be a winner at Tim Hortons

Thanks for reading my review.

Yumm Tim Horton's
Mar 31, 2004 03:06 AM17180 Views

I live in Canada and I know that Tim Horton's is not in the USA or anywhere else in the world. For those of you who have never heard of Tim Horton's, it is more of a Cafe than a restaurant. There you can get different kinds of coffee, hot chocolate, donuts, cookies, sandwiches, juice, bagels, soups, you name it. And best of all, they're all good.

Coffee

Tim Horton's has one of the best Iced Cappucinos. I love them, although they have a high fat content. But still, they're the best. Their coffee is exceptionally good. The blackness is perfect, it never tastes old or stale, and it's always a reasonable price. They have many varieties in coffee, as other cafe's do too, but it's just too good.

Hot Chocolate

Yumm. Hot chocolate! Yum! Especially when it's HOT. The creaminess is just great and it's such a good hot beverage to drink if you don't like coffee. Hot chocolate tastes good with anything in their menu.

Donuts

I can't say too much on donuts. I'm not a big fan of them, but I gotta say I like them better than Krispy Kreme donuts, because those are just too fattening. Donuts have lots of fat in them too, but for Krispy Kreme, you gotta run a marathon to get rid of all the fat! My favorite is the Boston Creme, although just this morning one of my friends who used to work there told me she knew how they made them and said it wasn't too good. But maybe she was scaring me. I bet cuz they're the best! Their chocolate donuts are really good too, always fresh. All their donuts are always fresh. Their long johns taste just like their donuts, it's just a different shape. I have no idea why they have them.

Cookies

Mmm mmm good cookies. From chocolate chip to macedamia nut, always fresh and always tasty. The sugar is just perfect on them, not too sweet not too bitter. They are ever so soft and I recommend everyone try their cookies.

Sandwiches

I've never really tried their sandwiches, but I have heard they are very good. I've heard their baguette is very tasty and filling.

Juice

Fruit Punch is my favorite. Tim Horton's only carries it's own brand of juices. Tim Horton's juices. They have flavours like Apple, Orange, Fruit Punch, Grape, and more. They are 100% Pure Juice from concentrate.

Bagels

They have many varieties of bagels, such as whole wheat, and I really can't remember the rest of them! Haha. But I know that they are all good. You can spread cream cheese, butter, margarine, and a bunch of fruit jams on the bagels. The perfect breakfast in my eyes is a bagel with cream cheese and fruit punch juice. It is the cheapest and tastiest breakfast you can ever find, except for homemade breakfasts of course. But I'm talking outside food here.

Soups

I haven't tried their soups either, but their soup on a bun bowl I've heard is so yummy you'll come back for more and more. And it's low in fat too! As it is only a bun with soup in it, and soup is always low fat.

So, I guess you've seen what the basic menu is at Tim Horton's. I recommend you go there whenever you get the chance, because it is truly a great experience.

Genius creates, and taste preserves. Taste is the good sense of genius; without taste, genius is only sublime folly. -- Chateaubriand

Introduction

My current trip to Canada has been so eventful. I am really happy these days. Believe it or not, one reason why I am happy is that I have found a perfect place for the best coffee in the world. Since I am from South India, I am a coffee aficionado (which is quite natural with many southerners) who has tasted almost all kinds of coffee varieties be it filter-coffee or instant coffee, be it chicory rich or 100% coffee, Be it hot or Cold, be it with skimmed or foamed milk or black coffee, Be it caffeinated or decaffeinated or quadruple shot of espresso (Believe me I tried it, much to the disbelief of the clerk and my friends at SBs, cracking up my taste buds), be it latte or plain old good coffee with milk. I have tried it all. Till now, I was ranking the filter coffee and good old Bru instant as the best with Starbuck café latte coming in at no.2.

Tim Hortons has changed all that. It has changed my thinking about fast food. It has changed my opinions about many fast food chains. It has thrown some good light on me about what a good coffee is all about. The fame of Canada is not Ice Hockey or Lacrosse or Curling or CN Tower or Niagara falls alone. I will add TH to the list for it is in every nook and corner of Canada. I was thrilled and awed to see why there were at least 50 people standing in a queue to get a morning breakfast amidst some 40 odd restaurants in the Montreal’s Gare Centrale station. I tried it once and knew the answer immediately for I am hooked.

BTW, do not think this is a biased opinion, for it is not. Let me delve into my review in detail.

History of TH

Tim Horton's was a famous ice-hockey star who played for Toronto Mapleleafs. He was famous in Ontario where the first TH was started in Ottawa Street in Hamilton, Ontario in 1964. The current Chairman of Tim Horton Children's Foundation and co-founder, Ron Joyce was the first franchisee in 1967. It grew leaps and bounds over the years (You will know why at the end). Wendy’s International Inc, which owns TH, has over 2,200 stores in Canada and approximately 160 in the United States (Starbucks needs to watch out, albeit being market leader). It employs over 55000 employees worldwide. Traditionally a coffee house, it started its dramatic growth after the introduction of phenomenally successful, TIMBIT in 1976 (I just love it. You get 20 for $2.50). Today TH is more than just a plain coffee house. It is a wonderful restaurant offering great, quality food day in and day out. (At least in the franchises I have tasted so far. Not a single one is having a quality level less than outstanding!!)

Menu

— Regular & Decaffeinated coffee

— Flavored cappuccinos; Café Mocha; Iced Cappuccino (This is my favorite along with French Vanilla)

— DONUTS in about 59 varieties – favorites being Apple Fritter (contains apple and cinnamon) (Mine too), Dutchie (with raisins), Boston Cream and Chocolate Dip

— TIMBITS – Donut holes that are simply great

— MUFFINS – about 41 varieties

— Cookies – about 28 varieties

— Bagels in 12 varieties (my favorite one being multigrain)

— Tim’s Own sandwiches (6 famous one’s albeit being costly for quality reasons)

— Cakes and Juices (My wife’s favorites)

— Other favorites such as Croissants, Tea Biscuits

My analysis

Continuing where I left off, Tim Horton’s is just a wonderful place to be, full of choices. I got to know about this place due to my coffee addiction, yet I have found this to be a place of innumerable good fast food item offers.

In couple of months, I have become so glued to this place; it has easily become my favorite fast-food chain in the world. Truly speaking, Starbucks is a very far loser, when it comes to coffee taste and offering it has compared to TH’s wonderful coffee. The cost factor of Starbucks versus TH is also a consideration. It falls well beyond my expectations. Being a SBs aficionado for a while for it’s latte, I can easily compare these two and TH beats SBs in all departments’ thumbs down, as far as I am concerned.

The taste of French vanilla cappuccino or café mocha or iced cappuccino is the best I have tasted and my taste buds where titillating in joyful sensation when I tasted each of them. Not to mention their regular coffee and the 18% (fat) milk they offer, this is a super duper place for coffee lovers.

As far as the eatables are concerned, I just love their bagels and donuts. As I mentioned in the menu, I love their multigrain bagels and the Apple fritters. I need to mention specially about TIMBITS, their reason for success. It is just wonderful and it was excellent as far as I am concerned. My taste buds were not as joyous as they were when I tasted their coffee, yet it was good.

They can certainly concentrate more on the eatables department with many choices and some combination deals. The combo deals can certainly push them to some more customers to become the undisputed monarch from an undisputed king status. TH is like McDonalds of USA. The beauty of TH compared to McD is that the quality of TH is so very superior. I have tasted bagels in quite a few places and so are donuts. While Krispy Kreme takes away the title for donuts, TH is holding the second place, in my opinion, for taste. When it comes to Bagels, it definitely takes away the first place, as I am not really into fancy bagels but regular kinds. Their muffins are also excellent.

I haven’t tried their sandwich for all of them being non-veg. From my experiences, I can certainly vouch that they will be excellent. I never tried TH whilst I was in US for I didn’t give it a deep thinking for fear of the unknown took control of me. (I am always skeptical on spending hard-earned money in unknown restaurants, unless I get some valid feedback).

I love Tim Horton’s and I will rate it at the best rating possible. I recommend TH to people of all ages and sizes. It is a good hangout spot (I saw quite a few students doing their work in the restaurants), depending on the number of people present; it can be noisy at times. Visit this place, even if you are not a coffee fan, for TH has many items to suit your needs.

Conclusion

My first comment can be changed to companies. Tim Horton’s is an accomplished company. It is a true wonder as far as Canada is concerned. I shall write some more reviews soon (Montreal after completion of few more trips, Toronto after my paid vacation-training-tour and Quebec), enjoying my TH coffees, donuts and bagels. Do RRC them too.

If you see a TH, RUN to that place, today…

I Hope you liked my review. Do comment, if time permits
