A must read for science fiction lovers!

I came to know about the very existence of'The Martian' only when I saw the trailer of the movie and I was actually quite surprised that I hadn't heard of it ever before and ordered it within a couple of minutes after finishing the trailer,

I was hooked! Right from page 1 to the very end. The book is well written and well researched as well, as is evident from every small and intricate detail. I started reading the book at around 8 at night and finished it at 3 in the morning. without taking a break!, albeit my exams had finished just the day before and I was sleep deprived.

It could be due to my fascination with this genre, but I did feel that this book is excellent in every aspect.

The story revolves around Mark Watney, an astronaut who is left for dead on Mars(Yes, the book is set in the future) after a severe storm. The book is a tale about how he manages to survive alone on the planet with meager resources and his quest to contact Earth and be rescued.

Each page is filled with exciting twists and turns and the protagonist's sense of humor left me smiling plethora of times. The book is extremely well written and made me feel as if such a situation is plausible. nay. as if the story was real and someone was actually stranded on Mars.

A must read for those of you who like science fiction and adventure books.

The Martian is a scifi book written by Andy Weir. Mark Watney is an Astronout and botanist. For some reasons he is left behind on Mars by his crew. For the next manned to arrive it will take 3 years, so he need to survive for 3 years with food that will last for 35 days. He uses his botany skills to grow plans on mars. Things never go as planned. The Red planet always wanted Mark to die. He uses his knowledge to survive, which is very well depicted in this book. The entire story is told by Mark in the form of logs.

A must read for everyone who like scifi and how a man survived on mars with nothing.

Ridley Scott puts the science back in sci-fi

For those who haven't read the book or watched the fairly spoiler-filled trailers, The Martian has a simple premise: Mark Watney(Matt Damon) is left behind on the red planet when his Nasa mission is cut short by a violent storm. With no way home, he's forced to find a way to survive until his colleagues back on Earth can rescue him. Cue the science, as Watney(a botanist) tries to find a way to grow food and survive, while his Nasa colleagues back home - led by Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor and later, Donald Glover - after learning of their mistake, scramble to build a new spacecraft to save him.

Much of the film's success is down to Damon, wisecracking - "In your face, Neil Armstrong" - in the face of surely crushing loneliness and peril. The rest of the impressive cast is also engaging: from Nasa's ground staff(including Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Kristen Wiig) to Watney’s crew, led by Jessica Chastain. The script by Drew Goddard manages to juggle the explain-like-I'm-five science with an added level of emotional heft without delving too far into mawkishness. It's also beautiful, with the Jordanian desert standing in for the vast, echoless expanses of Acidalia Planitia.

But the greatest achievement of The Martian is how far it, more than any sci-fi in recent memory, strives to make space cool again. Not only does it largely avoid dumbing down its source text, or champion men and women(!) who solve problems with their intellects.

We live in a world in which Nasa is a shadow of its former self and the future of manned space flight rests upon Silicon Valley billionaires. Yet here is a film where Nasa is not only sending up Mars missions, but the whole planet unites to innovate a solution to save one man. The scenes of crowds gathering in Times Square and Trafalgar Square, enraptured by live-streams of astronauts, would seem overly sentimental - if we hadn't already lived through the Moon landings. That "Bring Him Home" tagline? More like "Fuck Yeah, Science".

That's a good thing. Because The Martian doesn't just prove there is still such thing as a smart blockbuster. It also sends a message to both kids and politicians: science is hard, expensive, and yes, sometimes things explode. But one day it just might save your life.

A thrilling survival novel
Sep 04, 2015 05:52 PM 896 Views

Martian is a sci-fi novel written by Andy Weir, and it got fair amount of attention. This book takes place in near the future where humans are now doing a man mission to Mars and the book starts off at the very first chapter with an astronaut name Mark Watney who get left behind on a mission due to an accident. He was left on his own on the planet Mars and from there he attempts to survive and live on Mars until the next mission can hopefully bring him home.

From the start of the story I was completely pulled into the narrative, this novel is generally classified as science fiction, but I will also include it in the thriller genre. It really kept me on the edge of my seat, and I was always anxiously trying to get back to read this novel  because I always wanted to know what will happen next and I had absolutely no idea how the book was going to end, which I absolutely love not being able to predict the ending.

Even if you generally don’t enjoy science fiction you might really enjoy this book, I will barely would describe Martian as science fiction just because there is no alien and no super advance futuristic technology, the technology is very close to what we have now and it is very realistic. Even though there is quite a bit science theory and technology is discussed in this book I was able to go along with the story and I was able to make assumptions on how it will work.

I will love to re read it someday, and will highly recommend you to read it if you are interested in survival novels.

This is one of my favorite books.

Mark Watney and some other astronauts land on Mars. Due to some unexpected reasons, they have to leave Mars as soon as they enter. But due to some accident, Watney had no chance to leave Mars. Everyone expected him to be dead. But unexpectedly, he survives. Now he is the only human on Mars. How do the humans on earth find that he is alive? Will he reach the earth successfully? To find the answers, you have to read the book.

Watney is very jovial and he is a genius. This book wouldn't be so interesting if Watney's character was even a bit different from what was in this book.

The language is not so difficult to understand. The author's writing skills made this book awesome. I would say I love this book because of Watney. But actually, Andy Weir is behind that character. So thumbs up to the author!
