What is ''Adapted'' Screenplay ?
It is a screenplay based on previously published material (most of the time, thats a book)
Most of the time the movie and book are similar but some time's it's not possible
to show on screen what's in the book and thus the movie and the book end up
being completely different. e.g. John Grisham's 'A Time to Kill' and
Stephen King's 'Apt Pupil'
However some do succeed in bringing to book perfectly to the screen
or in some cases making it better.
Here are the ones I considere best adapted screenplays.
I have included only those which I have seen on screen and read as well.
I may fall short of the standard 10 but here goes
- The Shawshank Redemption
Based on the novel by Stephen King and Directed by Frank Darabont this is
best possible adaptation of a book that we will see in a long time to come.
Never has the movie been exactly like the book
- The Green Mile
Except maybe in case of this movie again based on the novel by Stephen King
and directed by Frank Darabont.
- The Hours
Based on the Pulitzer winning book by Michael Cunningham, this Stephen Daldry directed movie is another good example of brilliant adaptation.
Daldry uses his deft direction to fully utilise a stellar star cast and excellent material.
Nicole Kidman's ''I think I have a first line'' is the best in the movie.
- The Godfather
Mario Puzo adapted his own novel along with director Francis Ford Coppola
for this marvel of a movie. Includes the famous scene where the Hollywood producer wakes up to find his prize horses head in bed with him
- The Rainmaker
Staying true to the book, which is a missing feature in all other adaptations
of John Grisham books, Francis Ford Coppola does it again
- Fight Club
The novel which bought fame to its author Chuck Palahniuk also ended up
as a film which achieved cult status. Although not completely true to
the book, it was well directed by David Fincher (se7en, Panic Room)
- The English Patient
Anthony Minghella won Best Director and the film based on the Booker winning
book by Michael Ondaatje also won the Best picture and another 7 awards.
Both the book and the movie were worth the awards.
Well I could remember only 7.
I will definitely add more as if I remember them
Please everyone feel free to add your own.
