As one of our friends said before, Tatanova really is a terror of all sorts. I have been facing problems


regularly since the starting month and none of them were resolved quickly. There is no facility to pay the bills on phone or online.One has to wait for hours in queue to pay the bills.


The connection gets disconnected before the grace period ends and there is no other way to get back the connection than to visit tata billing center and paying the bill. Customer service too is not proper. They dont take a complaint even when you want to file one.


The complaint numbers the give are fake. I havent got any replies to emails sent to customer care either. I find Iqara, Airtel better service providers than this Tatanova. My suggestion is to go for some other service provider


other than Tatanova. Tata is very unreliable.

Tatanova is a terror of sorts. No matter whichever walk of life you may belong to, Tatanova wont fail to frustuate you. I am going to divide my review in three sections, namely technical stability, and customer care.


Interms of technical stability, those of us who have used it will vouch for the fact that atleast 1 out of five attempts to get connected to tatanova via a dialup fails. Now 20% failure rate may be negligible by vsnl and mtnl standards. but we dont expected this from private ISP. For the not so technically sound or savvy, while checking the mail online, the popup which says ''Debug code required Yes No'' will not be the least unnerving.


On 2 such occaision I had encountered unnerved user clueless about what was to be done and how to proceed. This is caused by the improper coding of their website. Seems, Tatas can't afford to have a professional website. Exceptionally frequent downtime at the website is too common. Even while browsing the speed is never constant. Top it up with the fact that one day, while retrieving mail via outlook you are prompted to enter your username password on the pretext that it is incorrect, next day the sme thing works fine.


Worst malice ofcourse was the total lack of protection to spam and virus. There was not a single day in my life with tatanova, when I had not recieved 2-10 unwanted junk mails of which half contained virus like Beagle and Netsky etc. It seems their mail server was never in their control. But was a den for the virus and spammer.


Compounded with this is the fact that support via a customer care email was non existent. You may ask the email helpdesk the capital of India and they are bound to tell you the name president of Congo. On the helpline too, they tended to keep one hold for eternity and then disconnect you without any reply. This was probably done to avoid the customer.


Everytime you dialled the helpline number you had to re explain you issue from the beginning, and they made it a point to keep you hold for minimum of 5 mins so that they can verify your id and password. And at the end you may get disconnected or may not get any satisfactory reply. In nutshell, until you are really desperate looking for frustuation and bad service, do not think of subscribing to Tatanova internet service which nowadays is marketed as TataIndicom internet service.

This is Sanjiv Gupta working at Bangalore, and here is my story.


To avoid going to office in odd hours to check my emails etc, I finally decided to take a telephone cum Internet connection at home. I started talking to


various service providers in Bangalore..




  1. Touchtel told me that they do not have connectivity in my area.




  2. I was very much interested in Dishnet, but they told that they will






take 4 weeks.




  1. The Tata Indicom agent told me that he can give me the connection within




a week.


Since I urgently needed the connection, I applied for a Tata indicom on 31st may 2004, application no. 303292.


The verification guy came on 5th june (Saturday) and told me that the installation person will be calling you tommorrow before coming to your residence.


so far, so good. But here the trauma begins:


The next day 6th June (Sunday), I cancelled all the outdoor programs to get the installation done. And BUMP...., NOBODY came or called up. I was not sure how to face my wife for that. Anyway, that weekend got ruined and my wife also resumed talking to me by Tuesday.


Thursday (10th june) afternoon, when I was busy in a meeting at office, I received a call


on my mobile. It was the gentle Tata Indicom person standing outside my


residence with all the equipments. I was amazed at his intelligence of NOT even calling me a single time before coming. I still have his number 9243110832 saved as a incoming call in my mobile.


Anyway, I requested him to come on Saturday 12th june, and he agreed.


And, then came the long awaited Saturday. To make sure that we do not


spoil this off day, I called up the Tata Indicom call center at 56780121


to remind them about the installation. ''Sir, please wait till the evening..


and let us know if nobody turns up..'' came the reply.


Sigh...I waited till 5 pm in the evening..and called up again at 56780121.


''Sir..our field workers work from morning 10 to evening 10.. so he may


be coming to you anytime.''


Frustated enough, ashamed enough.. I left things on God.


If this is the story of installation, I do not know what will happen


to the post installation service.


I still curse myself, for not opting the Dishnet, since anyway two weeks


are passed without nothing happening.


Now, I am looking to post this message on some Internet forums..so that people can avoid all the pain. Also a copy of this on my company's notice


board will save lot of people's trouble.

I used Tatanova for some time. Initially it was okay -- well at least no better or worse than others (Mantra, Satyam, Netkracker etc.).


No announcements at all from Tatanova about the fact that they're shutting shop -- I came to know when I went to my local shop to buy a renewal pack, and the SHOPKEEPER (not Tatanova) informed me that the service was shutting down.


Since early June the service started giving MAJOR problems. One suddenly got prompted for a password while surfing. Calls to the Helpdesk would be answered in this sequence:




  1. ''There is no problem at our end.




Check you PC and reboot the system.''




  1. ''We will reset your password and check.




Login after some time and check.''




  1. Finally (after much screaming and shouting from




my side),''There is a problem at our server. We have


to call Mumbai to rectify it.''


The last straw was when the Tatanova staff illegally, arbitrarily and unprofessionally discontinued my account 2 days BEFORE the account was to expire -- AND WITH 10 Hrs. OF BALANCE TIME ON MY ACCOUNT !! Well past the expiry date, someone from the company calls to tell me that while I had 10 hours balance on my account, I could not use it as the account had ''lapsed.'' Obviously it will -- if you can't use it, then accounts will lapse with balance hours !!


C'mon guys -- if you want to make money, don't do it in such a pathetic manner. Resort to looting the gold reserves of the country or something -- not to pinching 10 hrs. of internet time from retail customers !!


Finally -- and this really takes the cake -- when I asked some ''on duty manager'' at the Helpdesk on who was the senior-most person in charge of Tatanova (at the GM/VP/MD level), she DIDN'T KNOW ! If this is the caliber of MANAGERS at Tatanova, is it any wonder that they're as dead as the dodo in the Internet world?


TATA Nova...Not the BEST.

I have been using this service quiet for a while. For say about two months. It was all OKAY. The pricing was effectively tuned to Rs.330/- in the initials. Though they warned that prices may soar at a later time. They now have put up the rates to Rs.590/- a month. God knows that happens to the marketing people at these ISPs. These people claim that they are very competitive regarding their pricing. But, I have seen more competitive prices than TATA Nova. BSNL charges are more cheaper than what TATA charges for their connection. But, the only good thing about TATAs ISP is its unlimited surfing all the time through out the month. But, what happens to people who just make use of a hour or two hours time on the Internet.


The speed is on par with BSNLs speed. All over, I can ask people to look into their requirement before going with TATA. Never go with what a company has truly achieved over ages. It is only this product that matters when in use.

I have been using various isp's , many have come with a huge fanfare but their oblivion was unheard of , like wipro's netkracker .


I , living in hyderabad , first bought a 10 hour trial pack


when it was first launchrd in hyderabad . The speed was excellent . I don't know about their service in other cities but as far as net browsing in hyderabad is concerned , tatanova is by any standards the best isp hyderabad had everseen .


The service is excellent as it has a 24 hour call centre which takes care of all the problems we have .


I have been using tata nova since then but never had an engage till date . The speed is consistent as I constantly download mp3 songs which take less than 35 minutes for one song .


I was shocked to see many negative comments on ms, but I again say that as far as hyderabad is concerned , tata nova is the best isp .

The speeds and connectivity are so so....the prices a little too high.....but the TATAs more than make up on the Customer Service front......I have never witnessed such enthusiasm and efficiency in my many years of interacting with Customer Service personal all around the globe....


What took me by surprise was the interest all the Executives exuded at resolving a BIG TIME problem I had with my Modem...the response from the other ISP's was to run to my nearest Vendor and have my modem checked for bugs...


The Executives are technically sound.......and have complete understanding of what they talk about....


I am pretty confident they would keep up the good work......and would grow to be known among the better Customer Care Establishments the country has ever seen and for that matter the entire world.


Way to go.....Tata's

I've used manny ISP's since I got a new pc i've used ISP's like satyam,NOW ISP,netkracker,dial dishnet etc .... but 1'ce I tried TATANOVA isp .... belive me it had a real nice speed .....the price was verry high 99- for 10 hours ..... I would take 1 month unlimited ....foe 300- ...the customer service of TATANOVA is THE BEST ... they r really friendly....I usally recomed dis ISP 2 my friends who r using dial up's ....... I really dont know abt the current position's of TATANOVA isp.....my telephone bills came 26,000- .... then I decided 2 take a cable net .... i'am using wincable ..i think manny of u might be knowing abt wincable ..... belive me the speed of wincable is not even one 5th of the speed of TATANOVA .... I belive dat wincable give a nice surfing speed but NOT AT ALL a good download speed ...

When I select an ISP, the first thing I want is speed. With a slow dial up piling up phone bills, this one gives a good throughput and its download speeds are just too good.


Also initially I wanted to check out some installation stuff and called up their Support number. The Customer Support was also one of the best I have experienced in India. They had all their answers ready and were very helpful with their suggestions. I really felt that they treat their customer like a king. The connectivity is also fantastic. The connection doesn't break all too often like the others I've experienced. Also the home page portal has interesting stuff and it's a nice pit stop before beginning to surf after logging on.

Hello readers I am a new subscriber of tatanova and I use it from chickballapur a town situated 56 km from bangalore and we were using bsnl connection but it was the worst service which I have seen in these days and when I got news that tata has opened their isp I purchased and now I am totaly satisfied and relieved because they are not only giving good speed but the technical support is so good that even at midnight 12 they are theri to help u out and I am very happy with their service and in all bangalore people are now going for tata nova service so hats off to the pioneer of indian industries tata and I know what ever they do they do it great

I was happy when I heard that, an isp is going to be launched by TATA. but not now. its bakwas.


I dont like that product also. its not at all worth.


for a product to be famous, it should be available at all places.where as this is available only in the cosmopolitan cities.


I feel this is one of the main drawback. its not available in other cities.


more over its not as fast as dishnet or vsnl.

We all know that Tata is one of the largest industrial group in India. It is like the sort of GE of India. For years Tatas have taken advantage of India's huge bureaucratic rules and made their expansion and profits. A cleverly designed and sustained PR campaign has helped the company the status of ''Tatas can never do wrong''


Well, I agree that Tata's may not be doing illegal things to achieve their means, but I may disagree with a lot of you who might think that the Tata's know how to treat customers.


Recently, the Tata group realized that they are in a big mess when it comes to Information Technology. So hurriedly, they started an ISP (in 2001) which is way toooooooo late.


They call it Tatanova--I have no idea what nova means. So they gave full page newspaper ads and hoardings and promotions. Now you know how I react when I see full page ads about products. The Tatas has made big claims in the ad, such as:




  • The fastest ISP in India




  • Large bandwidth




  • Best customer support.






I called their toll free number. I said: ''So you claim to be the fastest ISP in India, what is your benchmark of fastest'' You must prove yourself. The customer service rep said, ''Madam we are the fastest, because we have the backing of the Tata group'' I burst laughing on the phone. So I asked, do you know how much bandwidth Tatanova has? She replied that ''I cannot reveal this to you due to company policies.'' I got irritated, I asked for a supervisor. The supervisor came after 5 minutes. I asked him the same set of questions. He goes, Madam, we are the fastest according to many benchmark tests. If you want I can send you some ''literature on our ISP'' I asked him if he knew how much bandwidth Tatanova has, he said he does'nt know that but he can find out.


He took my name and address. He promised to send me ''materials on Tatanova'' and also complimentary CD for one week. It has been several months. I have not received anything.


Phone call aside, I personally bought Tatanova and tried using it. The connection speed is ok. It connected in one go on several ocassions, but I was frequently disconnected. I called their helpdesk and they could not figure out. They told me that my modem settings were wrong. I replied my modem is fine when it comes to VSNL.


Overall speed after connection seems to be not too great. It can be compared to Satyam etc. I still think VSNL is much faster than all of them. Except that VSNL does'nt have a hi fi call center to take complaints. But I have heard even that is improving now and VSNL helpdesk is actually helpful now.


For years, Tatas have sold in a monopoly environment, things like big trucks and railway engines and steel. They never had to deal with the retail customer. Now they have to deal with retail customers and I am sure, they are learning a lot of new lessons. Until they learn their lessons, my advice is to stick to VSNL or the likes.

Today, I understood, the importance of this community and the reviews in my daily life.


Wondering what is the relation with the TATA nova ISP? Simple, not preferring to read the reviews before I actually bought the product. However, please note that this happened to me in Hyderabad, and can be different in other places.


I heard from my friends and Cyber Cafe's, this has good speed and good service. So, I went to buy the 3 Month Unlimited pack and got home. It is here that the story starts(Well, this is a like a story).


Scene 1:


I inserted the CD, and tried to register, but the page would not load. I called up the Call Centre and the person attending me helped me out in registering. Infact, he registered me and gave me a password. I was pretty impressed (Till then, we both thought the problem was with the access, and the registration should help me to get connected directly.


Scene 2:


I got connected, and again I was very very impressed, it took no more than four seconds to authenticate. But, then I was not able to browse. I again called up the call centre and was asked some questions like the configuration of my system, configuration of my modem, make etc. Again, I was impressed by the length of details they were making note of. Little did I know that every time I call them, irrespective of the problem, I will be asked the same questions. Within few seconds(I thought they were tracking the problem) I was given a sloution. It was to reload the TCP/IP adapters and to reload the Modem drivers. I did not agree as I did not see any logic in that. When I called up again around 10:00 PM, I was told by another Call Centre executive that, the problem is with the Telephone line (here too a TATA phone) and not with the computer as such.(Note the difference of opinions). Not able to do any thing, I went to sleep waiting for the next morning.


Scene 3:


I called them up in the morning, and for the third time I was impressed. Reason, they had a log entry of my problem, and every one knew the problem I was facing. Again, little did I know that, from here on, I would hate the TATA nova and their service. The lady who took the phone knew about my problem, still she preferred to ask those same questions. I was patient enough to answer them. But, to my irritation, she gave me the same suggestions. This time though, one more thing was added, that is to reload my browsers. I truly did not know how to respond. I told her that, I was able to connect to the other ISP's and Browse, but she wouldnt hear a thing. I asked for some one who is a network professional to help me out. Imagine the answer you would get from any other company and then compare with the answer I got. I was told to first contact my vendor, get my computer checked, then call the telephone people and get it checked. Despite these attempts, should the problem continue, then TATA nova people would ''IMMEDIATELY'' attend. Definitely not before that. She for some reason, even refused to get an engineer on to the phone. For all my knowledge, this is the worst answer one can get from a ''CUSTOMER CARE'' executive.


Scene 4:


I decided to log on from another ISP, told them what is on the TATA nova home page that day, even changed the password and told them to check the log for the same. That is the only way they could understand the problem I was facing. After lot of threatenings and warnings, I could finally get in touch with the network engineer. He suggested me to remove the parallel connection and connect the modem directly to the telephone cable. The suggestion he gave me was little out of the box and also not very convincing. Though, I still have to get convinced with the suggestion, it is nevertheless working fine.


Now on to the important part of speed and connectivity. You can connect to the servers with the first attempt, and can get authenticated in no more than four seconds. The speed is also very good. The problem is it goes dead frequently. I mean, the data transfer stops all of a sudden, and it happens frequently. Even when I am writing this review, it went dead.


My advise is a strict no no to this ISP. If you are bent on trying, buy a 10 hour pack and try, but no expensive packs.


I guess, by now you can relate to the initial two lines of the review. I accept that I was foolish enough not to read the reviews before purchasing the product. A lesson worth learning.

Tata Internet Services, a company promoted by Tata Industries that markets Internet services under the brand Tata Nova, is gearing up to offer application service provider services to its Internet Data Centre customers within the next one month.


The late entrant in the ISP market is currently in the process of signing up its existing IDC customers and will begin hosting their Internet operations in its 15,000 sq ft Mumbai IDC.


''We will begin offering applications through the ASP route, however it would take another 2 to 3 weeks for us to commence operations. We intend to undertake outsourcing jobs for corporates and would handle their internet operations through our data centre in Mumbai'', said the ISPs marketing head, Vinod Giri.


TISLs ASP will offer industry specific and general purpose applications on a pay-as-you-use basis, to several vertical industries such as financial services, retail and manufacturing, hospitality and the automobile industry.


Value-added services such as network management services, messaging solutions, disaster recovery management and back-up ad recovery solutions will form a part of the company's data centre business services.


''Consumer testing for access services is currently on, full fledged services would be extended to corporate subscribers only during the next couple of months,'' Giri said.


The company's Mumbai IDC will be the first to begin offering hosting services and will be soon followed by data centres in cities such as Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Delhi, that have yet to get functional.


The ISP does not intend to lower its Internet access rates and instead has plans to acquire a larger subscriber base by reaching B and C class towns across the country by leasing and hiring infrastructure from them.


It can be recalled that Tata Nova had planned to enter into a revenue sharing agreement with smaller ISPs and other infrastructure and basic cellular service providers for this purpose.


The ISP claims to have gathered around 14,000 retail subscribers and about 30 corporate customers since February '01.

Internet has become my passion and I always try to do something different on the net.I like finding new sites , new information and trying out new products on the net.Although money stands a part of this whole adventure and me being only 16 at this time with only Rs 100/- as my pocket money am not try to touch heights which people self-earning can do.But for this net I spend my 100 bucks just to check out new thing.


ISP(Internet Service Provider) have always been a product to be reviewed as people are interested in knowing many things before they leap up to check out the new products.VSNL on it's part was lucky to get customer first as it had a famous name and people knew about it and went ahead with this part.When I asked some of the people using the VSNL account as to why they were using it they simply replied saying ''OLD IS GOLD''.


What should one ask for from a ISP


1)Good Connectivity


2)Great Speed


3)Good Customer Support


Well all these thing and people ask for more and the quest never ends up.Well as said before my expedition brought me to a new ISP.Well this time it was TATAnova on my list and I wanted to try it off.


I went to a nearby shop and easily found a 10 hours pack of Tatanova which cost me just 99 bucks(within my pocket money range).


The thrill of trying out a new ISP grabbed me and I was at home in front of my girlfriend(computer I mean) and was on trying out his new ISP.

ALSO TRIED IN MUMBAI FOR CHECKING THE SPEED ALL THROUGH THE CITY



REGISTERING PLEASE WAIT...


Well the registration process was on in a second I could easily register myself as it was the same process like creating a email account(do you know I have nearly 85 email account and I check only 1 of them).I could easily get my desired ID and then disconnected to try out this whole new service provided by TATA.


CONNECTING STEP ASIDE...


I could easily get them in the first attempt all the time till now and had no problem while connecting.The process was easy and their dialer really helped solving all the problem with some good FAQ collection in their CD.


COMPARING SPEED WITH OTHER' AND CHECKING THEIR OWN OVERALL SPEED


Well speed matter's in today world where new ISP are coming up providing surfing at a very low cost.But when they don't give a good speed there is no looking back towards that ISP.I have seen this kind of thing happening many people quitting their current ISP just because it didn't provide a good speed.


Well TATAnova provide you with a fair speed.It is like on for a minute then off for a minute or as my grandmother would call it ''AYA RAM GAYA RAM''(RAM THE GOD CAME AND WENT AWAY).


There was good amount of transfer of bytes from both sides and the web site's loaded very fast.I could say that TATANOVA provides a good speed(not excellent) all the time.


Every time I would connect I was on with the same speed.But it went really poor at the evening's.


Coming to Speed and putting it on test I would say that HCLinfinet provides you with a good speed all the time.Anytime you connect you browse at the same speed.


VSNL and Netkracker then roll in the list when it come's to speed.


MOM what does the net mean?


Well coming to the most important part of ISP , yes I am talking about Customer's Support.The day after my registering I got a call from the Tatanova customer's service giving me a alternated numbers just in case I got a busy signal from their side to try the given numbers so that I could enjoy their service.


Their customer's support team was quite nice and really helpful.They could really help me when ever I had a query regarding their problem.Well thumbs up for their customer support center.


Conclusion


Well I think I had my own hard time with this new ISP as my 10 hours have nearly come to an end and the team of tatanova are calling me and sending me mail's informing me that my account is coming to end and asking me if I am interested in buying a renewal pack.


But I had to say no to them as it was time once again to try a new ISP, and thi time I have decided to choose NOW-ISP(review coming soon).Hope it provides me with a good speed.


And for all you people who want to check out their service well move up, first try out their trial pack(it cost's just 99 buck's) see if the speed is good and then buy the 100 hours pack).They will surely provide you with a good speed in the cities all through which their services are available.I hope they soon extend their service to other small towns too.

I'v tried Tatanova (Smart 30) and my verdict? Its worthless.


Adand to add to that, the company makes dishonest statements


(wrapped in legal jargon).


The reasons are given below:


The Bad Points:




  1. The most important requirement of any Internet service is




speed and good connectivity.Tatanova fails in both. Though


it connects on first try the speed is so slow that it takes


ages for the even a simple plain page like Google to appear.


It works in brief spurts and you spend ages just staring at


the modem praying for its RD/SD lights to flash. After


downloading a few pages the transfer stops followed by many


minutes of zero activity (though you press refresh frequently


or try pinging), this finally is followed by you getting


thrown out, followed by an ominous click from the modem. The


result? a hefty phone bill for no surfing. I tried their


helpdesk, lowered the speed of the modem to 9,600 changed the


init string...all to no avail. 3 days later I gave up and


deleted the Tatanova dialer from my desktop. I now continue


to use Dishnet (one of the best of ISPs) and VSNL(also


pretty good). Tatanova is similar to BPLnet as both are slow


and disconnect or hang. This is probably due to the fact that


these companies have taken up too many customers without providing


for adequate band width. Make money by cheating customers seems to


be their moto.




  1. Subtle lies: They promise great prizes, ''every one wins'' they say.




And the actual prize you win? discount coupons to an online store!


Let me tell you folks, thats NOT a Prize, its a fraud to get you to


shop - and spend more money. A real Prize (even if it is a ball pen)


is something that is given to you for free - with no strings attached!!


So what they are doing is, deluding themselves that the customer is a


fool, which, I assure you, that we are not.


The Good Points:




  1. Home Delivery of the connection was through courier in 48 hrs.




  2. Help Desk rang up, politely welcomed me and listened to my






complains. They were also very easy to connect to.


(Unfortunately they couldnt improve my connect)




  1. Hmmm what else? Well the CD was new and shiny...




Bottom line Thumbs Down for Tatanova.

TATANOVA, the new ISP working is faming good presently.

This is new internet provider to one of best cities in the


world.But the service should also be the best,


The name it self is not sufficient in this way of business,but the service & commitment to the customer.


This connection often get disconnected while surfing & the down load is speed is damp slow.Might be because it just started & might later be improved but who will stake the hard earn money in this as it usually in car also they have problem in start like INDICA bit now improving.


So better to shift to better one which R existing like


ROLTANET which is cheapest & best(No1 in mumbai) with 100hrs at Rs249/- only followed by VSNL which is costly one 100hrs Rs800/-
