Sundarban- Natures Paradise
Jan 07, 2017 07:05 AM 8053 Views (via Android App)

The name Sundarban itself comes from Sundari tree, which generally means beautiful. Sundarban is located in Southern part of West Bengal and it is very well known Tiger Reserve of our country protecting Royal Bengal tigers and giving them the best habitat.

Accessibility-Sundarban is not directly accessible from any state. Its nearest station is Canning from which cab ride is around 6 hours. But the travel to Sundarban was very comforting as it was a tour package which organised by our Private Tour package provider.

Local Sightseeing- Sundarban is a very big Reserve forest . It will take a complete day, still you maynot see all of it. But a very serene place to spend your holiday. It is having very deep Mangrove plantation and the forest was even denser during Winters. It was cool and very mesmerising beauty of mother nature. Lots of island views can be seen consisting of small ones inside water. The Tiger, crocodiles, monitor lizards were easily seen. It consists all other reptiles also but may be visible if lucky, like turtle, dolphins etc. Not only animals, this place is a heaven for all birds. In the silent forest the singing of birds is very sweet and different colors add a sprinkle to you tour taste. Lots of Watch Towers are there which can give you a better view of the forest and photography like Sajnekhalli and Sudhanyakhalli.

Hotels and accomodation- A perfect place to have your family week spending at Tiger camp. A great place with all facilities of luxury. With AC/non-AC rooms, cottage view will add a difference to the trip. Bonfire welcome is truely a difference maker.

Safety- Definitely, forest is never safe but regarding eco- tourism, the forest department has taken care of all sort of safety procedures. While taking childrens with you, special care and guidance needs to be taken by parents. Staying locations are safe and you need to follow the rules and procedures while entering Sundarban.

Overall a fine place to have a holiday around. Should try out for having time out of our busy life and was worth spending.

Sunderban Wildlife Sanctuary is a beautiful tiger and forest reserve, the home to Bengal Tigers. Besides tigers, various species of birds.

Reptiles and salt water crocodiles can be seen. The best way to travel through the Reserve is by boat to manoeuvre the flowing river.

Best time to go there is November to March. It is a peaceful and relaxing holiday. While visiting the Wildlife Sanctuary please respect the animals that inhabit the place as it is their home and we are trespassing,

Sunderbans : Where the Wild is Calling You...
Jul 03, 2006 01:18 AM 8270 Views

As everyone must have read about Sunderbans... About the Jungle and how big it is.. we all forget the most important point about our travel, which is to make it as comfortable and organised as possible. On one of my earlier visits to Sunderbans I stayed at The Sajnekhali Tourist Lodge, which claims having 24 hours electricity and water supply with clean rooms. I was rather devastated when I saw that water came only for one hour a day and the room was quite dirty with no eletricity as it had claimed. And I had to look for my own transportation to get there.

As I loved the mysteriousness of the jungle I was hesitated to visit it again. But on my research through travel agents I found a few private operators had also come up in the area. I visited one of them called the Sunderban Tiger Camp.

Sunderban Tiger Camp organises tours from Calcutta to Sunderbans and Back which is all inclusive of transportation... accomodation.. all meals and sight seeing.

This resort is no less than a luxury resort in the jungle. It offers all amenities one can ask for in the jungle. And whats even more is it organises a trip from calcutta to sunderbans and back at a very minimal cost.

Whats even more is that Can you imagine having a choice of A/c, non A/c Rooms and Tents and Huts in the Jungle.

So for all the jungle lovers I will advice you to stay here in this property if you want to have an enjoyable trip

SUNDERBANS-WORLD'S LARGEST FOREST
Jun 12, 2006 10:29 AM 10556 Views

India is the land of natural creations and beauties and Sunderbans is one of that.It is the pride of West Bengal.Really I must say, if given a chance, each and every Indian must see the real and natural beauties all over India inspite of going outside India .

Situated on the lower end of the Gangetic West Bengal, 22.00° N - 89.00° E, is this world's largest delta covered by mangrove forest and vast saline mud flats. A land of 54 tiny islands, crisscrossed by innumerable tributaries of Ganga, that was once infested by Arakanese and Portuguese pirates is now the abode of varied flora & fauna population. An area of 9630 sq. km., where 70 percent is under saline water makes the life of commoners, mostly honey-catchers, prawn-catchers and fishermen, very difficult. This is Sunderbans, the world's largest estuarine forest.

Sunderbans, the place that owes its name to Sundari trees, consist of a large flora population like Genwa, Dhundal, Passur, Garjan and Kankra. Apart from these trees, impenetrable Goran trees between 1.8 mtr. & 3.6 mtr. high covers almost the entire region. One of the most remarkable feature of this place is the bayonet like roots of mangrove forests that stick out above the water level.

Nature apart, if you want to feel the essence of spirituality then this is the place to be. A place of Ma Bonobibi (the goddess of the forest) to Shiber Kumir (Lord Shiva's Crocodile) or from Dakshinaroy (an ogre, the ancestor of all tigers) to Kapil Muni (an incarnation of Vishnu).

The land that is inhabited by Royal Bengal Tigers is not far from Kolkata. You can explore unknown wildlife of Sunderbans that harbour jungle cats, fishing cats, Axis deer, wild boar, Rhesus monkeys, mongooses and the largest estuarine crocodiles in the world.

Sunderbans is the breeding ground of immense variety of birds like Heron, Egret, Cormorant, Fishing Eagle, White Bellied Sea Eagle, Seagul, Tern, Kingfisher as well as migratory birds like Whimprel, Black-tailed Godwit, Little Stint, Eastern Knot, Curlew, Sandpiper, Golden Plover, Pintail, White-eyed Pochard and also Whistling teal. Come and discover wide variety of aquatic and reptile life forms that include Olive Ridley sea turtle, hardshelled Batgur Terrapin, Pythons, King cobra, Chequered killback, Monitor and lizards including the Salvator lizards.

Best Season

The best time to be in wildlife belts of the region is September-March. Although the luxury tours to the Sunderbans carry on the year round, and the monsoon holds its own magic over tourists on the expanse of the Sunderbans, September-March is the most likely time for tiger-sighting.

Bold and Beautiful
Jun 01, 2006 12:05 PM 7034 Views

It was a fantastic fine winter morning, when we started our journey from Babughat. Our trip was a organized tour, sponsored by the Company JES Corporation. It was for 3 days and 2 nights.

As the steamer rolls through the water, the scenic beauty of the banks of Hooghly river was awesome.

On that day evening, we entered sundarban, the trademark area of sundri tree and mangrove trees. The birds, wow, some birds are so beautiful and surprising, that we were just lost.

That night, it was a gala feast with the fish curry. Dark nights are the nights of black beauty. Every where it is quiet, no sound, only darkness, and the water mingling every where with its natural sound.

The next day, we visited the national parks, it was good. Crocodile Project exhibits the different lifecycles of them with practical views.

Can we see the tiger ?? We asked the fishermen, the people who stay in waters of sundarban for almost half a year for fishing. They are of the opinion, the tigers are bold and beautiful, but deadly, that's why, they are Royal Bengal Tigers. If you meet the animal, there will be either you or the tiger alive only. but not both.

On that night, we went more deep into sundarban. Luckily, we heard the roaring sound of tiger. oooh, what a dolby sound, directing tremors in the heart.

Tigers are a beauty, really, but crocodiles are not far apart. Next morning, baby crocodiles were running after the steamer, and the helper was throwing fishes at them. They said, there are fishes, here, who can drown the boat by striking it through their long mouths, which are like swords.

On that day, we returned to kolkata, but every one should visit sundarban once in a lifetime, bcoz, its bold and beautiful.

Sunderban.....The quite wildlife
May 19, 2006 03:03 AM 7177 Views

Sunderban is a very quite and peaceful wild life forest reserve. The destination is very much different from other tourist places. It's like a floating island on river. It's a place where we could physically see a delta, an estuary and a mangrove forest. We visited Sunderban in March last year. Its about 5 hours journey from Kolkata, 3 hours on bus and 2 hours on boat after that. The boat journey was so relaxing......as far as you can see ....you can see water and greenery and some wild animals like deer and monkeys. Let me specify NO TIGER one can see in Sunderban. The forest is like floating islands completely fenced by trees so tiger must be seeing you from inside but you can not see a tiger. I think I am being judgmental....but that's the fact. In the tiger reserve there is a wild life museum displaying different kinds of floras and faunas. There are couple of watch towers from where you might trace some wild animals drinking water from water ponds. We stayed in Sunderban tiger camp, a luxury private resort in the heart of Sunderban. They also organized the boat cruise for us inside sunderban. They used to host various entertainment programs by local tribal. The food, service comfort exceeded my expectations. The guide who accompanied us throughout our journey was a very nice person. He was involved in poaching of tiger earlier and killed more than 25 tigers when he was young. He was caught by West Bengal Govt. He requested the Govt. to give him mercy and he is utilizing his knowledge and skills in preserving the wild life of Sunderban. Though we could not see a single tiger there, but no regrets. But tigers are present in Sunderban, because till date tigers hunt human beings in Sunderban....as per local dailies.

The journey is the reward...

It all started last friday, when all of a sudden I realized that I had a 3 day weekend and hence should try and do something which is at the core of my heart and that which I am completely passionate about - TRAVEL. Friday night I partied till late, woke up at 7 Saturday morning and decided to don my adventure hat (figure of speech) and head towards sunderbans, I had no clue where it was , or how to get there.

The only piece of useful info I had was that it was inside west bengal!!! Even the localites here did not have a clue as to the best way to get there, I was quite surprised at this apparent lack of info...(it all became clear to me after my journey).

The start at kolkata itself was wrought with confusion and distress (with a handicap of not knowing the local language it was even worse) I was toying with the idea of dropping the plan, when one good samaritan on the street gave me some concrete direction. There were 2 bus routes, one taking me a lot closer to my destination than the other but as luck wud have it, I could get only the other one, anyways I jus wanted to get outta kolkata first hence I took that one.

It dropped me some 25 kms from my first leg of the journey. There I got down, spoke to the local villagers, sat with them shared a smoke and thus got the info I sought. There was a express scheduled some 15mins away which wud take me to my destination. It was quite a scene, there were 5 people standing around me trying to explain :)

I reached a place called sonakhalli, from where I had to take a semi- drowned retro fitted motor boat to a place called gosaba. the journey was 1.5 hrs long and I had no alternate choice. So off I went feeling grateful for my swimming capabilities, which cud come in handy very soon!! ( was only worried bout my costly zoom camera) the ride was fun, there were some local fishermen, doing some weird stuff with their hands inside a aluminium handi which was covered with a damp cloth.

Curiosity pushed me towards them and in my broken bangla I asked them wht they were upto,( ki korben dada?) turned out to be a pot full of small fishes which had to be aerated by constant churning of the water to keep them alive.

I reached gosaba , and to my utter delight was told that I cud get a ''van'' to get to pakhiralla which was 5 mins by boat from sunderbans. I went to the spot where the vans were supposed to be parked,,,and voila all I see are tricycle rickshaws. not the kinds with a seat and a top and stuff. these just had 3 wheels (obviously ) one flat wooden plank on top of the rear wheels and,,,lemme see did I miss out some key feature...nopes that`s it !!! I was sure that these were not meant for human travel, looked like some vegetable cart.

I approached a shop and asked the guy inside ''pray do tell me where to find the van to pakhiralla? '' and he points in the direction of the three wheeled contraptions,,, I repeat myself ''VANS'' ,,,I mouth the word...he again points in tht direction. Realization dawned in a discomforting way. I went to the driver and he said ''yes sir, pakhiralla sir, I take you on my cyclevan sir''...!!! and thus the mystery of the non-existent van was solved....:)

The 45min journey on top of 2 wheels and a plank under the scorching mid day sun brought me to my destination or so I thot. I was separated from the sunderbans by half a KM of water, had to find another ferry to take me across....there I was standing at the river bank and I was accosted thus by a localite'' sir you want room? inside the island room costs 500 I give u room at 250/-'' wow, I thought what I deal....he also offered to rent out his boat for some money to take me around the various islands.( lotsa haggling and stuff happened, but that is not the essence of this travelogue,,so I skip)

Went to the main island at 4pm to take a permit to roam around in my boat, then hit the waters, saw the ecological uniqueness of the sunderbans- the mangrove trees, thousands of em, they have a unique respiratory system, as half the day they are covered with water as and when the tide bulds up or recedes. Their roots go down for a meter or two then curl back up and re-surface as spikes.

These spikes sometimes grow upto a few feet in height. :) we went to a watch tower, situated near a man made sweet water pond (sorry forgot to mention, the sunderbans is surrounded by ''backwaters'' from the sea, hence salty water- I even tasted it to see for myself).. we sat at the tower for 1 hour..but alas no tiger showed up. I spent the night at the tourism depts lodge in one of the islands, which also had 2 watch towers...an after dinner vigil at one of the towers yielded no result either. Slept like a log, completely exhausted with all the events of the day.

The next day at 7 am we set off once again on the boat to explore interior water channels between islands - a point to note here is tht all tigers in sunderbans are man-eaters, they are very ferocious and are known to even attack boats in the middle of water not anywhere near the banks.

They are good swimmers. The waters in turn is invested with crocs and pythons. All the above makes this trip very CALM AND PLACID aint it !!! we were warned not to go near the banks for any reason and to stay on the top roof of the ferry...3 hrs and lotsa sun bathing later I was still at the same situation as I was the night before...no tiger anywhere. At this juncture my guide decides to alleviate my anguish by saying '' sir, winter months are the best to spot animals here as during summer the intense heat drives them to the shady depths of the interior forest, even the crocs lie low and deep in the water''

And so there I was at 11am under the scorching heat looking for a living creature ( other than myself, my guide and the captain of my boat, there was none to be seen) being told by the freindly guide who took 100 bucks from me ,that '' sir u city guys are so obless that you spend money and come to see a tiger in the month of may tht too at 11 am !!! u guys are nuts''....in not so many words but I got the msg. We headed for the water spot and the watch tower again. There I saw a family of wild boars( obleix wud have had a feast)...and a herd of deers, not to forget a water monitor...but again NO TIGER.

It was time for me to turn back home, hence I bid farewell to the royal bengal (unseen) tiger and departed, re-tracing my footsteps of the prev day....

He journey was fun, the unplanned methodology added spice, the language constraint pepped up the excitement and the sights and smell of rural hinterland where electricity is still a myth rejoiced my very soul. Its been a long narrative, hope u enjoyed reading it.....

Title : sunderbans- the tiger land
Apr 06, 2004 08:31 PM 11284 Views

Review : Hello everyone, This has been one of the most informative websites that has helped me plan my vacations and hence I feel obligated to share my experiences and aid someone else's travel plans. This is my first review for mouthshut.com and I would like the regular writers to kindly review the article and offer constructive criticism.

Place : Sunderbans wildlife sanctuary - Its speciality Sunderbans, boy, where do I begin about this unique region. Sunderbans is the only mangrove floating forest in the world. It occupies a delta region and extends from 100 km off kolkota, well into bangladesh. Geography aside, what sets this place apart from the rest of the wildlife sanctuaries is that this is essentially a floating forest. It consists of about 150 islands, each of which is filled with forests so dense that u cannot look beyond a few feet into the forest.

Almost all of these islands are uninhabited. The only method of transportation through these set of islands is by boat, through the numerous creeks and canals. The travel through boat is intriguing because of the tide factor. These islands, being so close to the sea, they have regular low and high tides. The staggering point is that the difference in the water level between a high tide and a low tide could be close to 20 feet. Hence this makes navigation through the small creeks very critical, because if one does not have a thorough idea of the local conditions, the boat could be stuck for close to six hours in deep tiger land.

Coming to the flora and the fauna, Sunderbans is the home to the royal bengal tiger. The forests in this area are so dense, that often, a tiger finds it impossible to hunt for its prey. And this is the reason , why it has turned on man as prey. It is commonly believed that almost all the tigers in this region are man eaters. This is the chilling truth of the Sunderbans. One more intriguing aspect of the tigers here is that they are expert swimmers and can swim distances of more than 80 km a day. They swim right across the water bodies and move from one island to the other. These saline water drinking, extremely intelligent royal bengal tigers are what add an element of fear and mystique to these great forests.

If you thought that man eating tigers on land were danger enough, there are large salt water crocodiles inhabiting the waters. These large opportunistic predators, some as long as 20 feet, occupy the sandy shores and upon some disturbance, simply slide into the water and go underwater. You can see them no more, but they can see you. One slip into the water and you are history. Then we have the river sharks that are real dangerous too. They just slice through anything in the water. The local people say that out of every 10 casualties, (casualties are almost entirely the fishermen and the honeycollectors who venture into the forest. tourists , u are safe .. ) 5 are caused by the tiger, 3 by the crocodile and 2 by the sharks. The spine chilling truth about the sunderbans is that a human being can see none of the three predators , but the predators are always watching and waiting for one wrong step. As the saying in this region goes - ''The tiger is always watching you '' .

Important Information for the Tourists : Even though the region is filled with danger, most of them are relevant to the local people who venture out into the water and the forests on their dinghies in search of fish and honey. The boats that are used for the tourists are very robust and big. And also there is no danger because a tiger never attacks people in a boat. That danger does not exist. So, sit back , relax , follow the instructions of your guide in the boat, and have the ride of your lifetime, taking in the beauty of this place, which has no parallel in this world.

Sunderbans - How to reach : From Kolkata, you need to travel for about two hours through the Bengal countryside, to Basanti. This is the place where the road ends and you get on to the water. From Basanti, the Sunderbans is about a two hour boat ride. The route is via Goshaba.

Sunderbans - Where to stay and how to go around There are three options to stay.

  1. the west bengal tourism hotel in sajnekheli - We get an eerie feeling once we see this. It is pretty isolated, run down and built on pillars to keep you out of reach of hungry tigers. It is well within tiger land . It is deep inside the Sunderbans. The west bengal tourism operates three sight seeing points within the premises of the hotel. There is a crocodile pond, watch tower and a museum. However, be warned, that the hotel runs on solar power and hence once it is dark, there is no electricity. pros : unmatched excitement, akin to camping in the forest filled with man eating tigers.

cons : run down hotel, no electricity and very bad service ( its a government hotel).

  1. Stay on a boat of the tourism department - There are two boats operated by the tourism department. Its a two day one night cruise on these boats.

pros : cruise in these forests is enchanting

cons : living in a boat can get routine and boring, mosquitoes, sharing bathroom with all the people on board, eating the food cooked in boat.

  1. project tiger camp : This is located on an island facing the sunderbans, across the river from the great forests. Located near a village, close to humanity, yet close to nature. Excellent food, wonderful service ( better than any of the five stars I have been to), safe boats and electricity. This is like one of those theme hotels. They offer a three day two night package from kolkata, which is wonderful, so you will not have to bother about the other transportation conditions. just sit back and enjoy.

pros : excellent hotel, nice food, great service, safe boats, package offered from kolkata so no hassles in transportation

cons : across the river from the forests.

What to see : If in the tiger camp, there are three cruises in the package.

day 1- in the evening, cruise to the sajnekheli tourism hotel. we can see the watch tower, the crocodile pond and the museum.

day 2- full day cruise through the narrow creeks and channels day

3- half day cruise to the sudhanyakheli watch tower.

In a normal zoo in the city, the animals are inside the cages and we watch them. However in the Sunderbans ,as we alight the boats at the watchtowers, we are led through a cage like walkway to the watch tower. We are walking in a cage to avoid the man eaters! We can sit at the watch towers hoping to have a view of the royal bengal tigers or cruise through the creeks in the prime tiger land of these forests. Also on day two, the cruise takes us to the point from where we can see the river meeting the Bay of bengal . Actually five rivers meet at a point and go ahead and meet the sea. This point is one of the highlights of the tour. The scenic beauty has no peers. It is just a scene which is a pinnacle of serenity.

When to visit : winter is the most comfortable time to stay, weatherwise. If beauty of the place is of importance, try the monsoons. If catching sight of the tiger is a priority, go after summer and before the monsoons begin, so that the tigers can be caught on the shores.

How much does it cost : 3500 per person from kolkata ( project tiger package) for a three day two night tour, which includes transportation, food, cruises and unparalleled service. Once they pick you up from priya cinema in kolkata till u are dropped back, u dont need to touch your wallet. No hidden expenses, wonderful service.

Recommended way of travel : Project tiger camp

Covering nearly 10,000 sq.km of mangrove forest and water (40% of which lies in West Bengal and the rest in Bangladesh), the Sunderbans are a part of the world's largest delta formed by the rivers Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna.

The name Sunderbans comes from the predominance of the tree species Heritiera fomes, locally known as 'sundari' because of its elegant look.

The core area of the tiger reserve (1330 sq.km) is the designated National Park and has been declared a World Heritage Site. The Sunderbans National Park is one of India's best protected reserves.

Animals you will see:

One need not have to be too lucky to get a glimpse of a Royal Bengal Tiger prowling amidst the dense vegetation. The other animals found are Chital,Rhesus Macaques, the leopard, wild boar, fishing cat, Estuarine crocodile etc.

The sanctuary is blessed with nearly 260 different species of birds. Storks, herons and egrets are likely to be seen. Spoonbills, ibises, cormorants and bitterns are also seen.

The best time to visit Sunderbans is during the winter and the spring. Don't miss the breathtaking sunrise and sunsets on the river. West Bengal Tourism Department offers a conducted tour at an unbelievable price. Make sure you avail their services and forget the mundane things like accommodation, transport etc. Just relax and enjoy and never forget that you are in the land where the tiger always watches you.

Getting there:

Air:

Kolkata would be the ideal base.

Rail:

Port Canning is the closest station, only 48 km South-east of Kolkata.

Road:

The nearest town is Goshaba (50 km.) From Kolkata, it is best to take a bus or car to Basunti or Sonakhali or Port Canning. Entry points are from Port Canning,Sonakhali, Raidighi, Basanti etc. From here motor launches can enter the park.
