Too much hype about a pathetic restaurant
Feb 12, 2011 10:13 PM3449 Views

Am really surprised how sue kitchen has been operating for so long. had been there for afternoon buffet on a saturday with family and we were the only ones till 3 pm.the spread was pathetic - and the spread was very meagre.

Definitely no value for money - buffet cost is exorbitant. with the wide choice of awesome buffets in bangalore, really wonder how sue is still around.Parking is another major hassle. all together a miserable experience.

Battle @ Sue's: Star & AamAadmi Defeat Each Other!
Jul 15, 2009 09:18 AM4289 Views

Birth of Envy: Sometime back in MS a rising star incited envy in me. Shakespeare said ‘jealousy thy name is woman’, but isn’t there a woman in every man? I get jealous of this star bcos:

I hadly wrote anything – he wrote prolific

I hardly frame sentences – He speaks poetry

Hardly any female reads me – Gals drool over him

I was deaf & dumb to music – He was connoisseur in it.

Do I need more reasons – Jealousy had become ME & I plotted evil.

Duel:  I began thinking is there something where I am better than him. Quickly I realized I could beat him in my core competence – EATING. But I had to get him into a eating contest. So I send him ‘friendly m2m’ (though in heart was envy!) – he takes the bait. In straight words I challenge him for a duel across dining table. He readily agrees which for a moment made me nervous – will he beat me here too? The battle day was postponed as we both were travelling & then we both agreed on a date. I began earnest preparations(?).

D-day: Finally the D-day arrived & the war trumpet is blown around 6pm – he says ‘come lets battle it out”. I took my horse & set off. Thanks to his directions, I reach the arena in time. What follows is a ball-by-ball account of a battle at a cricket themed Caribean dining place ;-)

Venue: In our early interactions we had chosen the venue for the eating contest to be Sue’s food place. This was because the star had once boasted of his batting exploits here. I agreed as I wanted to beat him in his home ground. Sue’s food place in Indira Nagar in Bangalore is a place serving caribean dishes & many kinds of buffet. The place itself gives a homely feeling, no one seems to be in hurry there. The walls adorn cricket memorablia like jerseys of West Indies cricket team, pictures of West Indies players visiting the place etc.

Whether Report: The star looks confident & I get doubts whether I can really beat the star, as the menu spread shows it to be a perfect batsman’s (eaters) paradise.

Pitch report: we both inspected the pitch, there was so much grass & non-grass to eat. Varieties totaled around 30 -6 types of salads, 4 types of nonveg. It was perfect batting pitch – if you stay at the crease( sit & eat) you score!

Toss & Double Wicket Play: We both padded up, took our plates & came the question – who bats first. He being a host, asked me to bat first. But I asked him to open innings as he knew the pitch well. So for a while we both end up pushing each other like lucknavi nawabs saying “pehle aap, pehle aap”. That’s when & realized the futility of toss. with toss 2 scenarios are:

1) he bats first, I am pressure to outscore him & Indian don’t chase well.

2) I bat first, there might be nothing left for him to bat (eat) !!

So we decided upon double wicket – both batting(eating) simultaneously – now don’t ask who bowled :P

Power play: its a batting pitch, but no point losing a wicket in first over. So I slowly took a cup of soup & put some bread pieces to get an idea about the pace & bounce of the wicket. Pumpkin soup was temptin enough. End of 1st over I was leading – I had double the soup than him! I set my eyes on a huge score, so powerplay overs had to made best use of – we began scoring heavily 2nd over after soup. We take 3 types of salads, roti, pork, fishfry. The pork was superb & melted & reached intestines as fast as Ganguly’s offdrives. This went on till 6th over, as we took more roti & nonveg. In between we stole singles in the form veg items. By the end of powerplay we both had enough score & were almost equal.

Middle overs:Once the initial taste made us happy, we settled down to a spread field. As we tasted most of the nonveg stuff in powerplay, now it was time for single & rotating the strike. We went on filling ourselves, taking single samples from each item. Once in a while we got a lose delivery & scored again – taking that pork pieces or grilled chicken. Even though the star tried to psyche me out & tried chatting to divert my attention, I was concentration personified like Dravid & went on eating.

Also in middle overs, we saw lot of spin – so we had to resort to lot of batting involoving wrists. The crab pieces had to be cut open, the chicken had to be eaten from bones – all this called for a lot of artistry with wrists, just like Mohd Azaruddin or VVS lakshman. Some crab legs we had to split straight open to take the tender meat from inside, just like tendulkars straight drive would split the 2 fields at midoff, midon.

Distraction in Sight screen: Once I started batting slow, I began to look around, looking for gaps in the field. I see 2 girls sitting straight in front of me. For a moment I lost concentration, but regained. I wondered if the star had positioned them there, to distract & get me out. But I knew a chick(en) in hand is worth 2 near the sight screen & didn’t look at them! By now, I was scoring more than him .. I began to feel even though I am an aam aadmi, I can beat a Star – at least in eating :P

Slog overs: we were at crease for nearly 90minutes & sudden urgency creeped in. we went berserk again, grabbing whatever our plates ( & stomachs) can take. We helped ourselves to last bites of all delicacies. In between Star had ordered a drink with tender coconut flavor, which tasted great. He took 2 glasses of it, I took 1 – that’s the only part where I was beaten! I didn’t take more liquid, as I believed in Solid batting err I mean solid Eating :P

Networth: when match ended, we had so much bones, crab shells in waste plates. In slogging we lost the score, but I am sure I won by 2 runs ( there was 200 gram of waste in my plate). So using Networth Lewis rule, I declared myself the winner, until the star decided to beat me! I knew score would have been higher if there was mutton & beef also. The day we went, it wasn’t there :(

Presentation ceremony: in the ceremony began with the presentation of the bill. I tried to grab that to be man of the match. But the star practiced untouchability there – he didn’t even let me touch the bill & insisted paying himself. That’s how the star beat me in manners, etiquettes & gentlemanship. He had previously beat me with his mentions of me in his revus etc – but here he won my heart. I was rejoicing I had eaten more than him – but I realized I won the battles, but lost the war :P

Post-match brief: we stepped out & analysed the match & many other things including MS. We resolved to fight out more often over food!

Trivia: Can you guess the star who lost the eating contest, but won hearts. If you have eye for details, the answer is in this page of MS!

I love Sue's
Jan 19, 2009 12:18 PM4063 Views

I have been to Sue's 8-10 times, and never felt disappointed. Every time, the feeling was happiness, contentment and wishing I had an additional stomach or two.

They serve Caribbean food. But those who have never tasted Caribbean don’t worry. It goes very well with the Indian palette too. The buffet is on Saturdays and Sundays and costs about Rs.200/-. They have a variety of salads, both veg and non-veg. If you like salads, you would surely love this place. Just make sure that you keep some space in your stomach for the lovely desserts. The cakes are awesome, so are the fruit salads and puddings. The main course pales slightly in comparison to the salads and desserts, but that is also tasty.

If you would like a la carte, go for steaks. The fish steak is very nice. They also have rotis, rice, a nice drink called Cocorico and lots more.

The ambience is not like a restaurant, it’s more like a house. The waiters and assistants are very well-mannered and helpful.

You also meet the owner, a wonderful lady there, most of the days.

Let me also write here, a good experience we had there. I have a son who is 4 years. When we went there for a buffet lunch, we were not sure whether to pay for my son too. We ordered rotis for him, but thought he could share our curries. The owner was around(don’t know if her name is Sue!), and she understood our confusion. She immediately told us that my son could eat as much as he wanted from the buffet with no extra charges. She also said that we would be charged for the food that he wastedJ

That was so sweet of her, and that actually reflects the ambience of the place. More than the air conditioning or the decorative lights.

I would like the recommend Sue’s to anybody who would like to try out new tastes.

In a world where we get hooked up with food and I enter this place called Sue’s Kitchen. The place seemed to be little strange to me. The ambience didn’t meet upto my expectation. But one shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. I can have any food and there are no prejudice when it comes to food knowing the fact that there millions of people struggling for a day’s meal. How in earth am I going to criticize this place for its ambience? There has to be a solid reason for me to talk about a product or a thing or else I might be just taking things for granted. Especially those who trust me and for those who love to read my reviews, I should be brutally honest in my write up’s.

This is my first review on Food & Drinks and if I didn’t give you the expected results which you look for, then pardon me. It was back in nineties when I used to watch cricket, I always wanted to visit Caribbean islands to have those sea foods. But when we desperately need something and like what I clinch on to, the nature always brought them for me. I am thankful to the nature and its law held me high all the time I dream of something. So incase if our thoughts are not in the right course and if our desire is not to spend some time in the Caribbean islands and its all about the ‘seafood’ then I must say nature gifted me with what I have desired for.

Caribbean food was always out of my reach until I discovered this place called Sue’s Kitchen. I stepped into this place with not much expectation and saw the place empty. There was nobody in there other than few staffs who were arranging our table. Well, to start with I walked into the other room to taste their soup.

The buffet counter was divided into 3 and that’s salad bar, main course and desserts. There were almost eight varieties of salads including Russian salads. I didn’t want to fill my stomach with it and kept it aside and got some steamed rice, salads, mutton curry, fried bananas. I ate and I guess there should have been some light music where in we can chit-chat with our fellow person who is sipping his/her ‘Cocorico’. So when I ate the food thinking if I should have come in empty stomach to fill my stomach with that delicious Crab Curry(Only on Sundays). It reminds me off Kerala and I tell you friends, Karimeen(Fish Fry) is one of my favorites and this Crab Curry really drew my memory where my Mother cooks food especially for me.

There are few things that I really wanted to try. Well, if you flip through this page to see what I mentioned earlier then you may stamp on to what I said. That is nothing but I can adjust anything and this place really tempted with desserts especially the Carrot Cake Dessert. So if I missed out any of the items which was placed on that table, then it’s not because I haven’t tasted it but I might get tempted to visit the place again and if you ask me why not today then it’s not a Sunday. Now did you get the point why I said about Sunday? Remember Crab Curry…

And I think I don’t eat much of Pork Curry but then the way they have cooked this one was really nice. So if you like pork then you can give it a try. What more do I need to scribble about the place when you have everything to fill your stomach with?

It’s time for you to visit Caribbean… It’s time for me to sign off… it’s time for me to taste some of their caramel custard and fruits…

Always a favourite
Dec 19, 2006 07:02 PM3880 Views

Honestly, I haven't been to Sue's for a couple of years, but when I lived in Bangalore, it was always a favourite for family birthdays and other special occasions. The first thing you should know about it - it's Caribbean - spicy enough for Indian tastes, yet exotic. Second - take the buffet. Every time we went, we would toy with the idea of ordering ala carte, but in the end always went with the buffet - and never regretted it (apart from the fact that we'd leave with groaning stomachs).

Since I'm vegetarian, I know I'm always biased towards places that have a good variety of veggie dishes, and this one has yummy spicy soups and at least 6-7 salads apart from the veg main dishes and a good variety of desserts. However my cousin who's a staunch carnivore will vouch for the barbecue non-veg dishes. The Caribbean rotis (somewhat granular) are great too.

The atmosphere feels like you're eating in someone's house. Sue herself was normally there every time to make sure things went smoothly.

Used to be great value for money at Rs. 180 (I think) for the buffet. Don't know about the current prices.

Someone tell me how this place is now... can't wait to go there and overeat again...

Sue's Kitchen - Great Buffet
Aug 10, 2004 02:19 PM9106 Views

I recently had the lunch buffet here with my friend and absolutely loved it.

Salads:

They had four varieties of salads, two with egg and two pure veggie (with clear labelling on which contains egg - to aid our veggie friends). Both my friend and I are kind of salad freaks and we tasted all. They were all pretty good. It would have been nice if there had been a salad with no dressing to help people on diets.

Soups:

Did not try it - so no comments.

Snacks:

This is where vegetarians might miss out. Most were meat based - fish, crab, chicken (Caribbean Jerk Chicken?) and just one vegetarian snack - cauliflower.

Main course:

There was one baked dish - which was absolutely delicious. They still have rice and couple of veg/non-veg curries for those who like Indian food.

Dessert:

Fruit salad, some chocolate cake and some other dish made of custard.

Service:

Prompt and helpful. I asked a couple of questions on the dishes and they could answer well enough.

Ambience:

Nice, with un-obtrusive music/lighting.

In all, it is worth every rupee of the Rs.180 (inclusive of taxes) they charge for the lunch buffet. Ideal on a lazy sunday - get up late, skip your breakfast and have an early lunch. Ideal for taking your friends or your family.

Will definitely visit again.

Carribean cuisine for you
Feb 07, 2001 10:10 AM5244 Views

Wanna go carribiean ??? this is the place you gotta come to !!! Situated in Indiranagar , 50 Ft road, this place specialises in West Indian Cuisine !! sounds exotic !! yep it is !!

You will find the place quite nonassuming but you better not believe it !! the food is excellent!! In fact I liked the decor.. nothing very flashy but pleasant to the eyes and yep you feel comfortable !!! They play west indian music to make it more authentic.

Ok this place is a combination of a coffee shop, buffet and dinner.

We had gone there for dinner and well it was worth going there .. I must say !!

Its open from 12:00 pm to 3:45 pm and in the evening it opens from 7:00 to 10:45 at night.

The menu comprises of one dish meal. The most common thing is which you you will find in the dishes are red means ( kind of rajma) and a white rice and spanish rice along with the meat fish or vegetable combination. In addition you will get Salads, Pies, Macaroni, etc !!! Thats a good meal for one dish . And its just enough for a healthy eater. I would suggest that you go there on an empty stomach .. I mean when you are real hungry... There are other dishes which have lesser combinations but you have to try their one dish meal !! Its yummy !!

You will feel like going there again and again !!!

The buffet lunch is also very good !! they have a wide variety of dishes from fish to crab to meats to vegetables all west indian style !!! You should not miss the lunch. The price per head is 165/- .

The menu for dinner is also quite reasonable for the amount of food they serve. It starts from 110/- to 130/-.If you order two three dishes seperately ina restuarant you will end up paying more. And one dish is enough for one or two if you are a small eater.

If you are a non veg you could try Grilled fish or Garlic Pork.

Well you must try this place out .. you will not regret it !!!
