Sherlock Holmes. The very mention of the name conjures up images of magnifying glasses, deerstalker hats ; of Victorian London and encounters with dangerous criminals. Who hasn't heard of him? He's probably the most famous fictional detective ever. Overall, Arthur Conan Doyle wrote 4 novels and 56 short stories featuring Holmes. The first of these was A Study in Scarlet which was first published in The Strand magazine in 1887.
The story revolves around the murder of a certain Enoch. J. Drebber and Holme's successful attempt to solve the mystery. As we find out, Holmes takes up the case only to show-off to Watson, but in the end, gets more than he bargained for.
Around half the story is in the form of a narrative by Watson, while the rest of it is an account of the events that lead up to the murder. The sudden change of scenery from London to ...... makes for some very interesting reading.
Since this was the first Holmes story, we are introduced to several familiar characters such as Inspector Lestrade, Tobias Gregson (Although he appears in very few of the later stories) and Mrs. Hudson. We also get a kind of Resume for Holmes in the form of Watson's ''checklist'' of Holmes characteristics and abilities.
Although this isn't the most difficult of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries, it does make a sort of ''primer'' for those not overly familiar with Sherlock Holmes. Also contains lots of trivia about him. A must read for all Sherlock Holmes aficionados
