Sony cdx f5500 problems
Dec 25, 2005 10:11 AM 8249 Views

I just wanted to warn anyone considering purchasing a Sony CDX f5500 or any other Sony car receiver. The face on my unit quit working after one year of light use. Sony warrantied it and sent me a remanufactured unit. The CD player in that unit worked for less than 3 months and quit and Sony won't warranty it now. Also, the radio reception in both units is terrible. I have verified that the issues I've had are not related to my vehicle. In fact, a friend of mine purchased the same head unit at the same time I did and had the same issue with the face not working. This is a poorly engineered product that Sony will not stand behind. They want $110.00 plus shipping to repair the 2nd unit. I could purchase a new unit for $150.00!

F5500 FM Radio tuner issues
Aug 09, 2005 02:43 PM 7015 Views

Hi All,

I got this nice set from the US, a shining CDX F5500, and thought would install in my new Wagon R. So, thats exactly what I did !! But to my dismay, the FM Tuner just refuses to tune up the even-numbered frequencies ( o yeah I am based in Delhi). We have 5 cool FM stations here with 3 of them having even-numbered frequencies. The two channels with odd-number frequency gets tuned really good though.

I believe it has something to do with the the tuning interval and which can be set also. But I have got no help so far......apart from this glitch this Audio piece is fantastic :) I am using the front speakers, Sony Xplod only. haven't felt the need to put up the rear speakers so far, maybe one day.

It takes a little learning to adjust to the controls and the functions, but once have a hands-on then its real cool handling. I like the remote its pretty comfortable to operate.

If anyone can help on the FM radio thing, I would be really glad.

Thanks,

Sanvir

I have recently installed this beauty (sony f5500x) in my versa. I went to Bhandari Auto Decorators in JM road,Pune. A cool guy Vikas dealt with me, he showed me their audio room which has all the mp3 systems with all the variety of speakers. With the push of a button you can mix and match a particular player with a particular speaker system.

I found pioneer speakers had the best results, x-plod speakers were good but I found the clarity and the bass treble disparity to be greater in the pioneer speakers. I went in for 450w pmpo(rear) and the regular 100w pmpo(front). The whole deal cost me 11500+450(rear boxes).

I needed a good sound system as versa is quite a handful. I am really happy with the results, trying always to find excuses to take the car out on short drives. The sound is mind blowing and really creates a symphony effect inside the car.

I strongly recommend this system as the players lens comes with a 1 year warranty and easily available. The higher or more latest versions do not have their lenses readily available and cost a bomb.

Sony Xplod CDX-F5510
Apr 11, 2005 07:11 PM 26514 Views

This beauty is probably the best buy in the car in-dash cd segment at the moment. It has everything you'd ever want in your car music player. It even comes with its own built-in amplifier (17 Watts RMS), which produces music as clear as the waters off the shores of the Maldives!

Its features are on par with the latest in in-dash headsets. The only thing one has to watch out for, is the selection of the speakers. I got Sony Xplod XS-V6940H 3-Way Co-Axial Speakers. They work wonders.... it feels like the music is literally blowing through your mind.... in other words, they're MINDBLOWING !!!

Also, if anybody is concerned about the cds skipping, etc, there is no cause for concern as it has a beautiful insulation system, and even comes aloong with a ''45-degree-install capability''.

The 5510 is a step up from the 5500 and several small flaws have been ironed out. For example, even though my car doesn't have a radio antenna, the reception is close to perfect. There are also several radio presets for easy accesibility.

It even plays mp3 and ATRAC-3plus formats, but the Attrac Software is not provided. The build qualtity and finishing are excellent and even better than the Blaupunkt headsets I checked out.

To simplify matters, the controls take just 5 minutes to understand and get used to... yes, they're that simple! The display supports Idv3 tags and looks enchanting. Also providedd is a wireless remote for easy accesibilty to the passengers in the rear seat.

It also comes with the DSO feature, or the Dynamic Soundstage Organiser, which actually ''raises'' the level of music by adjusting the treble. This is of great help if you have your speakers attached to the doors near your feet.

There are also several preset equalizers like Xplod, Rock, Jazz, etc. You can also adjust it to your own liking. The signal-to-noise ratio is the probably best in the whole range of car-audio systems.

It also provides cd-changer controls... though this is unnecessary if you have mp3 cds :P The main reason I would reccomend this (other than what my aching fingers have already typed), is because of Sony's great after sales service... something that even Blaupunkt can't match.

At this price, this is without doubt, the best you can buy. The only thing to ensure is that its installed by a professional. Check out the specs for yourself:

» CD receiver with built-in amplifier (17 watts RMS/52 peak x 4 channels)

» plays CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs (including discs loaded with MP3 and ATRAC3plus files)

» flip-down, detachable faceplate with blue/white color display

» EQ3 (3-band equalizer and 7 preset tone curves)

» BBE MP (restores detail and warmth lost to MP3 files during compression)

» CEA-2006 Compliant amplifier

» XM Satellite Radio controls

» CD/MD changer controls

» front and rear/subwoofer preamp outputs

» SSIR-EXA tuner

» 18 FM/12 AM presets

» seek tuning

» Dynamic Soundstage Organizer

» clock

» wireless remote

» CD frequency response: 10-20,000 Hz

» CD signal-to-noise ratio: 120 dB

» FM sensitivity: 9 dBf

» warranty: 1 year

Cheers! Have a great day!

Actual wattage of all car cd mp3 players = 25
Feb 09, 2005 04:40 AM 8233 Views

Actual wattage in rms per channel is 25 watts rms.

for all systems on 12 v car battery

although car cd player manufacturers rate them otherwise.

calculation is very simple mosfet or no mosfet like

v/I = r ohms law

v*I = watts

r= 4 ohms speaker

v= 12v car battery

i = v/r = 12/4 = 3A

so wattage max theoretical = v* I = 12*3 = 36 watts.

no system is 100 percent efficient.

so less 25 % for losses as heat radiation.

= 25 watts rms . that is for a full square wave divide by root 2 for sine wave

to get actual rms.or continuous power.

this rms of 20 w. can be multiplied by 2.5 to get music power 50 w per channel

or multiply by 10 to 15 by hi fi system manufacturers to get pmpo of roughly 300 w(speaker rating).

computer speakers manufacturers like to multiply by 100 ie 7 watt rms = 700watt pmpo for them.

rest is all bull(to fool innocent consumers)

sony 5500 3 equalizer and better new model 5700 with 7 equaliser are great model

the best thing about sony is 120 db signal to noise ratio signal amplifier pioneer is 95 db.

dynamic range = 20 hz to 20 khz.

for layman that means ratio of highest level sound is to lowest level sound.

so sony has very great and unbeatable clarity .

sony is 50% more hi fi than pioneer.

sony makes optical lenses themselves and there drives last long.

so go for it.

only benefit of pioneer is it plays wma as well.

price of pioneer 4650 and sony5500 is 6500 grey market. (120$)

sony5500 drawback is display ltd to 8 char.so complete title of mp3 can be read only once during start of track when it scrolls once.

sony 3300 is 5500 Rs (100$). drawback no remote control and cd changer control.

sound quality of all cdplayers of sony or pioneer 100 - 150 $ is same

as basic amp electronics same 24 w *4 rms rating 50 w * 4 music power.

features may differ.

best speakers I found were made by jvc price 30%more much better

highly efficient tweeters on them.

let ur ears decide.

Exemplary quality of sound.

I recently bought a WagonR and a week had not passed when I found myself searching for the perfect sounding system. In the process I also visited Sony world in Aundh(Pune) to check out the price of the models.

I knew that the gray market prices for car audio systems were considerably lower than the billed ones so I finally landed in the Bhandari Auto showroom on JM Road(Pune). This guy has an excellent system installed in his audio room to demonstrate all the music system and speakers and how they sound in different combinations just by the touch of a few buttons.

He showed me CD systems from Sony, Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer, Blaupunkt and Nippon in combination with speakers from the same companies. Frankly speaking there was not much difference to distinguish the quality of a CD player since all these were good quality systems and the difference was audible only when he switched from a low wattage (1-2 way)round speaker to a high wattage (2-3 way) oval speaker.

As I researched before going to buy the system, to know about the RMS (Root mean Square) power of a speaker/amplifier is utmost important. The comapnies fool the people by caliberating their speakers/systems in terms of PMPO (which is Peak Music Power Output).

In reality your speakers never run on PMPO because it is simply the peak power that your amplifier/speaker can support for a fraction of a second without bursting or getting short. It is a multiple of RMS multiplied by a factor anywhere from 4 to 70.

So generally if a company claims that the speakers are 500W PMPO, the RMS is most likely to be below 100W. It is the RMS which the system actually delivers. Now since the CD systems are generally 52X4 (4 channels of 52W each) you might be temptmed to think that an overall speaker capacity of 220W should be enough. But that 52W is RMS and not PMPO. So your CD system would actually sound good and realize its potential on speakers who are caliberated at least 200W PMPO (there is no guarantee so do check out the RMS rating of the speakers too or else you might end up damaging your speakers and amplifier in your CD system short).

After all that gyan acquisition I was able to reason out why the Sony system was sounding better on a pair of (6''x9'') 350W PMPO Nippon speakers rather than the 200W PMPO Sony xplode speakers while the layman sense suggested that the 200W speakers should be more than enough. The actual power of those Sony speakers would not have been more than 40W.

The front speakers however can't be so big. One, because there generally is no provision in cars to have big speakers in front. Second, 6''x9'' oval speakers in the rear are more than enough to blast your ears if you really require them to. So I went for the combination of Sony CDX F5500 (simply because I have utmost faith in Sony and I liked its looks) + 2 Nippon 3 way (tweeter, speaker and woofer) 6''x9'' oval 360W PMPO rear speakers and 2 front Sony Xplode 2 way (tweeter and speaker) 4'' round 120W PMPO speakers.

From the above discusssion it is evident that 120W PMPO front speakers can in no way be enough to support a 52W RMS channel. This is achieved by balancing the output in the CD system to put more load on the rear ones and less on the front ones.

Now about the player. CDX F5500 is a wonderful system with the above combination and I can hear all sounds from low frequency drums, bass guitar to midrange husky voice of Brayn Adams to high frequency flutes so distinctly that I always am searching for an excuse to drive my car around even if I have to go 100 m.

The features include DSO (Dynamic Sound Organizer which makes one believe that his front speakers are placed much above the dashboard (even though they might be placed below it, 3 band Graphic qualizer (of course there are preset modes), 18 FM and 24 AM station storage, handy littlte remote.

It remebers the point where a particular song has been swiched off and resumes from that point next time it is played. Its compatible with CD changers, has a removable (anti-theft) front panel, is nice looking (specially recommended if the plastics of your car are black).

This sure has been a good buy and I would urge all readers to experiment with a lot of speakers and go for high end ones to really enjoy this system to its capacity.
