Silver Wok is located just off Richmond Road, in a building known as ?Sheriff Towers?, and serves some of the best Chinese food that I have tasted in Bangalore. It was a medium sized restaurant
that turned smaller when a rule was brought in stating that the basement could only be used for parking which in turn left the restaurant with only one level that can now seat eight/ nine tables.
The people running the place and the waiters are from eastern India, hence the confusion with Chinese features, which probably runs in favor of the management as the patrons would now think that the food is authentically made! The service is excellent- polite and eager, and the food is served steami ng hot and remarkably swiftly as compared to other restaurants of this genre.
Coming to the best part- recommendations of some especially well made dishes- Proceeding with the starters, the lungfung soup, sweet corn or the hot & sour soup is better made here than most other restaurants in Bangalore. Appetizers should include some heavenly crispy fried vegetables (not for weight watchers), which is accompanied by a delicious chilly sauce, or dim sums- chicken or vegetarian, also accompanied by another garlic sauce.
Other good options might include fried spinach or corn, baby corn and beans/mushrooms or a whole range of delectable starters, which might encourage some to skip the main course altogether. Alcohol and a variety of drinks are served (occasionally in a very nice tall beer glass), along with a guide for the specials of the day.
The main course is standard as compared to the starters, excepting the dishes made in ginger/ garlic sauce, of which I feel Silver Wok has mastered the art of concocting. The accompanying sauces are very well made, and the staff is always willing to offer you some on request. Deserts can be completely ignored, partly because you probably won?t have an appetite left, but mostly because they suck!
The ambiance is pleasant- quite brightly lit in comparison to the typical dingy Chinese restaurant look, peppy music mostly from the radio, pale orange-rust linen on white and cozy because of its now reduced dimensions. Most of the clientele are those who have known the place for long and the management remains loyal to them, with an amiable smile and an extra few words. Over weekends reservations are necessary, as is arriving early to find parking space.
The food is averagely priced, with a full meal for two costing approximately Rs. 700-800 maximum. The restaurant is ideal for a relatively crowd free and private mealtime, although it may not be suitable for young children due to the lack of space. All in all, a great place for vegetarians and non vegetarians!
