Shah and Anchor Kutchhi Engineering College - An Ex-student's Review
My personal experience with this college:
Teaching Staff: The staff of college is on the whole, mediocre. There are a few good staff members, namely Mrs. Uma Rao and Mrs. Hegde whom the students respect for their flare in teaching and extensive knowledge and expertise in their fields of teaching. The rest of the staff ranges from mediocre to not good. The unfortunate tendency of picking up fresh engineering graduates who did not get picked up by the Industry (read Industry rejects) is the rule here for new recruitments. The advantage of this (for the management) is that they can pay them really paltry sums and fire them the moment they ask for a raise - there are always more. So the college management ends up saving money, keeps the college running and of course, the students suffer very dearly, since the rejects that they get as teachers nither know anything about their subject matter nor can deliver a single straight sentence in the medium of instruction (English). Not that the management cares.
The Management: The college's management is composed of mostly uneducated (yeah illiterate)or half-educated businessmen and women who do not take much interest in the way the college is run - as long as it keeps running and the money keeps flowing.
The management has hired a man called B.R. Bairi, who is an ex-employee of the Bhaba Atomic Research center (https://barc.ernet.in/) and is handling three departments namely Information Technology, Computer Engineering and Electronics Engineering. Mr. Bairi had specialized in Robotics some years ago and is basically a control systems man with no knowledge whatsoever of Information Technology or Software. Yet he teaches final year (BE) Computers and IT students the subject Software Engineering and handles their final year projects. To understand these final year projects one requires a sound background in Computer and Information sciences - something which Mr. Bairi self-admittedly entirely lacks. When asked, pat comes the reply - the college runs for the benifit of the Management and not that of the students. So our final year projects, which were involved a high deal of software complexity were judged by a man who cannot tell the difference between an ER diagram and a flowchart - a seriously unfortunate thing, especially considering the hard work that some of us put into it. The worst part is that this man didn't even let that staff deal with our project work who were trained in software much better than him and who were eager to take it up. We and the faculty members also got severely insulted over trying to show our software and database schemas to those staff members who had the ability to understand what was being done. Mr. Bairi is well known and infamous among students and staff members alike for his inexpertise and unacceptibly rude mannerisms. Mr. Bairi's style of taking lectures is somewnat like this: he comes into class, then exits and re-enters several times for reasons best known to him. Then he takes up a book from someone and faces a class of 70 students. He then holds up the books and starts blabbering something - no one actually knows wnat - and we were supposed to follow the diagrams and illustrations in a book from way across a class crammed with 70 people. To add insult to injury, Mr. Bairi has a great way discouraging students - if a student walks up to the man with something good which he/she has thought of, the student is shooed away and told that he/she is 'mediocre' and will always remain 'mediocre' - Bairi's favorite word. We later figured that Bairi himself understands very little or nothing of what he's been shown and that could be a reason for such behaviour. But this really has a horrible effect on the student's mind - getting blown away for showing enthusiasm and interest in your field of studies isn't exactly a good feedback. There have been times when project reports - good reports - have been thrown out just because he's had a bad day. Then there've been days when we've waited till 7:30 in the evening just so that Bairi would bring out his royal behind and sign our project synopsis. In fact, we waited the whole day outside Bairi's office to get our project's request letter signed so that we could go and submit it at the company where were offered to do our final year project. After making us wait the whole day, he told us that we were incapable 'mediocre' brats and were not capable of completing the project and not to 'waste his time'. We had to come back the next day again just to get the request letter signed signature. When the Project Manager from the company which had selected us for the project offered to speak to Bairi, he growled at us telling us that the PM was nobody to tell him what to do! Sounds unbelievable? its not!
Clerical staff: The clerical staff at this college is like that in any other - comes at 10, leaves by 5 and doesn't know the meaning of 'work' in general. But two women staff in particular are rude to the extent that it hurts. These clerical staff are the most frustrating experience in the college and the worst thing is that these two are those clerks with whom students have to interact the most. Here's a short description:
The mismanagement can be seen most acutely during the exam form filling. This is the time when all the students fill up their exam forms. The queues are serpentine and long. It takes from anywhere between 2 to 5 hours for a student just to fill up the exam form. There is no system of collecting exam forms from the classrooms like some good colleges have. The forms are issued on at a couple of day's notice and only a day or two are given for the form filling. After the given date a fine of Rs. 100 is imposed. The students who have ATKTs and who work and give these KT exams have a great deal of trouble with this arrangement. And the current students are expected to attend lectures while trying to fill their forms as well.
Library: The college has an extensive library with quite a few copies of required books. But the timings are such that the students get only 45 minutes to issue/return copies. The timings of library are the same as that of the college and bunking a lecture for accessing the library is not allowed. So this, like all the other things is also mismanaged.
Computer labs: The students are allowed to use the computer lab only during practicals - something which is way less of what is required to get a good exposure to software programming and systems.
Sports: The management is not interested in making anything but money. Same story regarding sports activities. A neutered version of a playground the is ;beside the college doubles up as the playground for sports events which are held for one week every year. Indoor facilities aren't very impressive either.
Website: This is a bad joke - https://shahandanchor.com/sakechome/index.htm - three words for this one: nothing here works.
Other staff: Staff is ok except for one man: VC Kotak. There is inside news that this man had tried to get fresh with twin girl students in Computer Engineering class which graduated in the year 2003. This shameless man unfortunately happens the son in law of the ex-principal late Mr. Maneck. There is no intention to hurt the memories of Mr. Maneck, an elderly respectable man. Did they say that once relations become the basis for recruitment, you get garbage in the works.
There are a million things that I want to say but time is a luxury right now.
So join this frevolously decorated premises which calls itself a college at your own risk.
- Thank You! We appreciate your effort.
