Savitri - Aurobindo Reviews

Very Good book for serious reading
Nov 27, 2006 04:47 PM

Savitri is one of the best books of the 20th century. It is indispensable for people who aspire to catch a glimpse of the divine. It is said that Guruji designed the verses of Savitri in such a way that it creates a same vibrations as our sacred mantras. So reciting Savitri not only has intellectual value but also has spiritual value. Savitri is an experience. It is also available online. Its a journey an experience I read it for many days, a chapter per day...........Cool book.

It contains the essence of Integral yoga.

Let me give you a word of caution. Savitri is for. Serious reading.

If you are not a spiritual aspirant but merely looking for a entertaining story then Savitri is not a book for you.

At Rs 200 it is not a bad deal. Now we have lot of quacks in the spiritual book market, they come with catchy slogans, lot of hypes but let me say "a very few of them have the inner strength of Savitri'.

Don't try to read it when your moods are down, read it when you are happy.

Savitri – Sri Aurobindo

Introduction:

Sri Aurobindo is a Spiritual Master to many. Pondicherry Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a well known Spiritual center begun by Master and the Mother. For more details log on to https://searchforlight.org. (I am myself one of the devotees).

On Savitri

Savitri, the only Indian Epic in English was first published in the year 1950 (only the part one), the rest was published the following year (after Sri Aurobindo’s passing). The book is divided into three parts, spread over 12 books. (The edition I have is 4th edition -1993 published by Ashram publication department). The epic is as the name indicates the story of Satyavan and Savitri but it is not all. It is the story of rejuvenation of mankind – the resurrection of man in divine image, the birth of the Supramental (a term used by Sri Aurobindo for super-mental). Savitri encompasses the whole of Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy.

“I used Savitri as a means of Ascension” – Sri Aurobindo.

I consider this book as I consider Bhagavat Gita and to me it is one of the finest epics written in the English Language.

Savitri as Literature:

Language has power to materialize things –I mean to say words themselves have power. The co-ordination of sounds form words (e.g., Wind can actually make one hear the sound- try pronouncing it loudly). In Savitri, I found it explicit. English here is rhythmic and it achieves its poise. The verses do not rhyme; they are free (free verse). The style is lofty epic style, but it does not begin with invocation as all epics usually do, rather it begins like Shakespeare’s Hamlet, ‘foreboding’. Nature comes alive in His writings and within the story there are many stories and references which cannot be overlooked, if the book is to be read in literary point of view. The source for this epic is Mahabharata. The story itself is metaphorical. Savitri’s struggle is everybody’s struggle against death and like Savitri and Satyavan everyone will transcend death in generations to come. We meet God face to face, like Savitri and listen to them and learn the Truth.

Savitri as a Spiritual Guide:

Savitri alone is sufficient to make you climb to the highest peaks. If truly one knows how to meditate upon Savitri, one will receive all the help one needs. For him who wishes to Follow this path, it is a concrete help as though the Lord himself were taking you by the hand and leading you to the destined goal. And then, every question, however personal it may be, has its answer here, every difficulty finds its solution herein;..(https://searchforlight.org/savitriAtalkByMother.htm). This largely depends on personal belief.

Savitri is Universal, beyond the confines of religious discrimination and Sri Aurobindo is not only a spiritual Master and a freedom fighter, but also a great poet .
