Saawariya Songs Movie Reviews

Sweet and simple
Jan 15, 2008 12:17 PM2865 Views

I heard the name Monty for the first time as a music director(though i'v alwz been a hindi music freak). The music is vry gud, utterly likeable and worth listening over and over again. The title track and "Jab se tere naina" are amongst my favorites. "Masha Allah" is also a vry cleverly prepared song. All the tracks are sweet, simple and honestly speaking- very likeable.

I gt addicted to the title track on listining to it 4 d first time and i still find that song sweet and charming. The music is not the same as has been produced for decades.

Highly recommened for all sweet music lovers. some nwly composed tracks, fresh music and sweet music are what make these tracks as unavoidable.

Do not miss it. Especially if u r a mis music freak.and these tracks are much better than the tracks of Om Shanti Om and other movies that came at that time.

Its a great movie + album. performance was best i.e more than expactations from newcomers. SLB strikes back. It was his typical type of movie. He introduced two new singers: Shail Hada & Parthiv Gohil which were at their best throughout the album. Last time SLB introduced Shreya Ghoshal & she was very successful, now lets hope for the best.

The music by Monty Sharma is also good. The lyrics by Sameer are very poignant. So it is a combo pack of Monty + Sameer = Saawariya. Ranbir & Sonam are good on screen. This movie is recommended to be seen in the theatres only, so that you can see the beauty of the sets & great  direction of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. As seen in SLB's some other movies, this movie also has sad ending which the audience wouldn't like to watch in DIWALI. that may be the reason of why this movie didn't work well as expected.

Thumbs up...to Sanjay Leela Bhansaali n Monty Sharma...for some

fantastic music with equally good https://lyrics.... SLB is one man who still

stands by his ethos n contemporary music...which I feel should be

followed by other directors too...

I was looking fwd to its music release from a long time n just on his

past record latched on to this one too... n I wasnt disappointing at

all...

to start with ... Saanwariya's title track steals the heart away...one

truly romantic no. ...hats off to this new singer who "with his

yoodles" reminds me of Kishore Kumar...do listen to its lounge no.

...sung by the same singer with guitar as the single music

piece....awesome

jab se tere naina...by shaan...has to be Shaan's n this albums best

masha allah...by Kunal Ganjawala...is even a good one

all in all...all 13  songs barring 1 or 2 are good...n this album is sure to be in all music lovers collection

I was really look forward to the music of slb next, it was meant to be ground breaking as Monty sharma has been working for it for ages. There is a big list out of all the songs I only liked saawariya the title track, Yoon Shaabnami, mash allah, and a bit of jab se tere naina. Dont get me wrong its better then most albums but this album has a long time in the making I thought the effort would have shown and I would get ground breaking music instead I did not.

Cheebela - This track was a disapointment Alka did her best but I just managed to fall asleep in this track lyrics are just okay. To me clearly a weak link in an album 2.5/10

Dharas Bina chain - This tack was not as great as I thought, very slow paced and not catchy another weak song in my view 2/10

Saawariya - really good song but a little short, I liked the english lyrics that kicked in, I wanna be yiur date tonight very catchy and good music for this bad thing is that its not long enough ill give it 7/10

Masha allah - Good track here very smooth and I like when the mashallah lyric kicks in and the music behind that I would give it 6.5/10 it does drag a bit

Jab se tere naina - a bit faster and good lyrics, picturisation is of randir in a towl, I like the music but again does not grab my attension for long 6/10

Yoon Shabnani - A good track, picks up in some loud beats great lyrics about the chaand, I enjoyed this one but yet again monty it does drag 6/10

Overall very disappointing the rest of the tracks are very slow and below 5 ratings overall some lonner tracks are amaizng but as an album as a whole I would say just download only 2 - 3 tracks dont waste money on the whole album..

Keep it Simple and Straight!

First credit should be given where they are due. For the effort from SLB and his team for creating an impressive score. I have listened to the album two runs. I would like to speak aloud on my perception of the music of one of the most awaited movies.

The singing is soothing. The feel of the album is very soft, like a feather caressing your ears. Some numbers are marvellous, and almost in the league of HDDCS songs. The Youn Shabnami  number is the master stroke for me due to the surprise qawwali it breals into in the middle and then retreats to the original tempo.

I feel that the lyrics could have had done with a little more depth. Mony of those sound like a pedestrian tukbandi, unfortunately. Great music should have been complemented by better shayari.

Now, the thing I have been so eager to say. The aade tirchhe notes of some songs get on your neves. Really. To much acrobatics has taken away from the simplicity of teen love. Credit to Kunal and Shail for successfully singing those, but, it seems SLB has some kind of fetish for the'mishr sur', which started from the HDDCS title score. But this works better like a sprinkling of salt/pepper, not in the way of the main cereals. The melody suffers in the end. It was really tedious in the first playing for me.

I hope more people agree with me.

Soothing and calm....tranquility at its best!

This is truly wat I didnt expect of the album..i expected it to be a crossover or somthing like that! but after listening to 2-3 songs, I gave second thoughts..i got hands over it as soon as possible! this was only due to my sister was jumping on ranbir kapoor's name..she is one of those crazy fans, only crazier! she urged me to buy it and finally.

Starting with the first song, which had become the most common song among people now! its the title song SAAWARIYA which is sung by shail hada, probably a new comer as I never heard his name before! his voice totally suites the actor's personality.. he has sung its lively and one may go on hearing it again and again like I m doing! heyy...it doesnt means that other songs are not good...lemme go to the next song!

JAB SE TERE NAINA...a lovely song with blend in music....sung by our own shaan! the music starts with a slow note and suddenly picks up speed and again goes down like a train. only the song is better...his voice is sweet like ever!! and it is meant for admirers...

MASHA-ALLAH is a song sung by kunal ganjawala and shreya goshal...they are as usual good and have sung others songs in the film too...

the song totally describes about the girl's beauty. SONAM KAPOOR, who is really breathtakingly beautiful...this one is not very much liked by all but is also a good one!!

THODE BADMASH.....sung by shreya goshal...is a lovely composition by the director himself! goes on a slow note like most of the songs...a very cute song! the singer completely blends her voice with the girl's sweetness!

YOON SHABNAMI... sung on id as per the video...awesome songs and m sure that it wud grip the audience's heart!!

DARAS BINA NAHIN CHAIN is not among the ones I liked....i dont like richa sharma's voice firstly...and thats the reason I didnt like the song!! might be liked by few people but not atleast by me..

SAWAR GAYI...is a ultra slow motion song....but is very sweet on ears....again by shreya goshal...gosh! bengalis are really good at music!!!

JAAN-E-JAAN type of songs would obviously be loved by all....

PARI is also among ones which I didnt like....i dont even have a reason for it! it is good  to listen but still I cant explain the irony for this song!!

SAAWARIYA REPRISE is awesssome....shail hada has proved himself as a good singer! he pulls his voice on high notes and still I feels lovely, , , , , ......

APART FROM THIS, the CD is actually a multimedia one which also has the theatrical trailor of the film and few wallpapers...but the video part is only playableon a PC!!

My verdict for th album would obviously be: WATT ARE YOUR WAITIN' FOR..... buy it as soon as possible! if you like slow songs....even if u dont like slow songs....i still recommend you to buy! it would also be a change for your ears as well as you may check whether you are accustomed to slow songs or not.....

Good Music - pleasant to listen
Oct 15, 2007 09:18 AM2664 Views

Saawariya was a pleasant surprise to me . first reaction to these  songs was not very good . very uncommon music . but as you go on listening to the tracks again n again . you will like them more n more .! that's the magic

very beautiful lyrics . n soothing music. on personal note . I generally keep my iPod ON all the time . but Saawariya music is not for iPods . you got to be sitting calm n quiet paying attension to the music to find it worth. and believe me you wont regret that.

'Saawariya' and the'Saawariya - Repraise' are good tracks with good lyrics . this new singers proves his uniqueness here .

'Jab

Se Tere Naina', 'Masha-Allah' and'Yoon Shabnami' have again very good lyrics and good music. the rhythm is catching . something that you will remember through out the day .

'Thode Badmash' - ok ok song . the way the singer says'Badmash' at the end is too kool.

'Sawar Gayi' is lil slow track but worth listening . it has nothing that you wont like.

'Pari' and'Chhabila' are like situational songs . good to hear kind of . they have to make you remember someone or other . good lyics . good music . good singers . ek din asaman se pari ayegi . is something evry catchy . or even tang pajama, kurata dheelaa is also catchy https://lyrics.

'Daras Bina Nahin Chain' goes lil classic .

'Jaan-E-Jaan'  is ok ok . as compared to the rest .

Overall album is pretty good

Monti : on the footsteps of Ismil Darbar
Oct 09, 2007 08:09 PM4121 Views

AFTER A LONG TIME**..... the album which contents every kind of songs ( except himesh's ddhhhiikkk-cccchhhaaakk ) which tries to make u melodious and familier with the song that u ll not b able to judge your ONE favourite song (it will b in plural).

There r certain technical things in this album which must be  put into perspective...

1) MONTI (the master mind music composer )  has given maximum number singers in this album successfully.

2) from guitar to quwalli, from rahman style to ismiel darbar style, ull experience everything in this album.

3) maximum number of instruments used ( in respect to variety)

so.... lets put a torch on individual song.....

saawariya - the title track.... beautiful guitar chords... soothing blue song... sung by Shail Hada. Impresses from the promo itself.... there is also a reprise unplugged version... with some change in singing style and pattern.... both r good to listen....

yu shabanami - this is the winning track..... beautifully sung by Parthiv Gohil, here u ll feel the accent of ismil darbar... really great composition... the main element is in the antara, when the sudden but nice strokes of qwallis start.... really a good song...

jab se - sung by Shaan, a soothig rajasthani folk beats with special touch of shaan. good to hear but after the main part, its fails a bit people's concentration... yet a good song to hear.

daras bina - another winner of the album..... Glorious Richa sharma has given the life to this song... excellent semi classical song with the bol of tabla in the back ground.

Chhabila- a pure alka yagnik's song. u cant think any one except her. another ismiel darbar accent (remember vo kisna hai??). nice melodious song.but having  very dull https://lyrics.

jaan e jaan - sung by Kunal Ganjawala and Shilpa... vry good composition. gr8 use of western symphony in the song.very tuff to sing.... yet excellent job by kunal ganjawala.u ll feel both the indian and western touch in this song.

masha allah - sung by kunalganjawala and shreya ghoshal. another melodious song having very good use of odd notes.but possibly fails to attain the concentration after the main part of the song.

pari- sung by kunal ganjawala. a tibetian tradition touch in the initial whistling. a blue soothing song. good to hear.

sawar gayi - by shreya ghoshal. a pure shreya ghoshal song. again full use of very odd notes.good to hear song.

thode badmaash - COMPOSED BY SANJAY LEELA BHANSALI,has shown his versatility, a very good composition contents odd notes. a great effort by a director to b a music director.

overall...... a very good album. HATS OFF TO MONTI,one can feel his hard work by hearing the songs in the silent atmostphere by listning the third and fourth patr of the song, by listening the variety of the instruments he has used, by just tryin to sing to judge the complexity of the composition.

2 cons : its a very very complex album containing very odd notes in all of the songs which may fail to attent pure concentration to the song frm top to bottom.

some songs looks very monotonuse.g. yun shabanami, pari, masha allah, jaane jaan. though having much difference, having the same mood, can make u boared by listening it contioneuesly.

apart frm all cons.... the main pro is.... we ve got the great album which is perfect in all aspects and a great music composer  which shows his talent in each of his composition.

go and get it....

Oct 03, 2007 08:19 PM2679 Views

I am happy that I picked this album last week. I feel like writing a review on Saawariya album after listening to it a couple of times. Music directed by Monty. This album appeals to me the most, I think for all Hindi music lovers. Especially, I liked 4 of the tracks most.

I did not mean the rest of the tracks are bad, definitely all are good but four of them are excellent. 1. Saawariya by Shail hada. 2. Jab se tere naina by Shaan. 3. Thode badmash by Shreya goshal and 4 Masha Allah by Kunal & Shreya. The music has lots of strings and drums all the way, with excellent melody. I do not think anyone will regret buying this album. I do not think this could be any better.

One more interesting thing about the movie is about the new entrants – directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Go get one for yourself!

Enjoy!

Excellent, probably the best of 2007!
Oct 03, 2007 07:54 PM3870 Views

Saawariya by most is considered to the most-awaited soundtrack of the year.  Sanjay Leela Bhansali films always had great music.  Khamoshi, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas had excellent scores.  So, we all expect Saawariya to be nothing short of a great score.  Plus, Saawariya debuts 4th generation star Ranbir Kapoor, who is represent the first family of Hindi cinema.  Also, it debuts Anil Kapoor Sonam Kapoor.  It also has the current queen Rani Mukherji and the superstar Salman Khan.  Also, it must note that Salman Khan always have great music.

Does Saawariya live up to expectations?

Let’s see:

1) Saawariya

Track Length: 2:45

Singer: Shail Hada

Well, a great way to start off the album!  A short, yet simple song that will appeal to the youngster generation.  Shail has sing the song with complete ease, and Monty has composed the song very well.  Sameer lyrics are average!

Rating:  4/5

2) Jab Se Tere Naina

Track Length:  4:44

Singer: Shaan

So far, my favorite song of the album.  Shaan is excellent in this song.  Monty deserve full point for composing this song very well.  Lyrics are well done in this song.

Rating: 4.5/5

3) Masha-Allah

Track Length: 5:28

Singer: Kunal Ganjawala, Shreya Ghosal

Wow, another great song with wonderful singing and Monty composition is very well done.  Lyrics are good, but the best part of this song is its simplicity.

Rating: 4/5

4) Thode Badmash

Track Length: 3:19

Singer: Shreya Ghosal

Wow, Sanjay Leela Bhansali composed this song (according to the CD cover).   Well, another simple song that will be loved by everyone.  Shreya Ghosal is wonderful in this short song.

Rating: 4/5

5) Yoon Shabnami

Track Length:  5:15

Singer:  Parthiv Gohil

My personal favorite of this album with Jab Se Tere Naina.  The qawaali touch in this song is excellent.  Parthiv Gohil is excellent in this song.  The music composition is great by Monty, and Monty has come up with a winner in this song.  A song that should be loved by one and all

Rating: 5/5

6) Daras Bina Nahin Chain

Track Length:  4:05

Singer:  Richa Sharma, Shail Hada, Parthiv Gohil

A song that will have its few takes, but eventually it will find its appreciation in the long run.  This song is being played on the first promos.  Richa Sharma has sung this song very well, as the other singers.  But personally, I like this song.  Monty composition is well done here also.

Rating: 4/5

7) Sawar Gayi

Track Length:  3:42

Singer:  Shreya Ghosal

Another short and simple song, but very well done.  Shreya Ghosal has done a excellent job on her vocals.  Composition is good, but comparing it to the previous tracks, this is quite above average.

Rating: 3.5/5

8) Jaan-E-Jaan

Track Length: 5:59

Singer: Kunal Ganjawala, Shreya Ghosal

This is a great duet, this song has a 50s-60s feel to it.  But, this song is wonderfully done by Monty as the compositions are very well done here.  Kunal Ganjawala has done a great job here, and Shreya Ghosal is great also.

Rating: 4/5

9) Pari

Track Length:  5:19

Singer:  Kunal Ganjawala

Another great, yet simple song.  This will find its takers by audience.  However, I’m expecting the song to look great on screen.  Once again, Monty has done a great song on the composition, and with so far 9 tracks, Monty you have come up with a winning score.

Rating: 4/5

10) Chhabeela

Track Length: 5:23

Singer:  Alka Yagnik

After wonderful simple songs, we get something a little more upbeat.  It looks like a Rani Mukherji song based on the way on how the song is sung.  Once again, Monty has done a great job with the music in this song, and this song will look great on screen.

Rating: 4/5

11) Saawariya Reprise

Track Length: 3:06

Singer: Shail Hada

This song is like the first song, but a little different, a little slower.  A nice way to end the album!Rating: 3.5/5

Saawariya, in my opinion, is the best soundtrack of 2007, it beats Partner and Om Shanti Om music.  Saawariya should emerge the top selling album of 2007 due to its simplicity.  I’m sure and I’m hoping Saawariya sweeps the music awards as the music is wonderful.  It appeals to the younger generation as well as the older generation.  Those who appreciate simple and love songs, will love Saawariya.

A huge WINNER from the whole Saawariya team!

If you enjoy albums like Partner, then you may not like Saawariya!  But if you appreciate and love Devdas, Veer-Zaara, and songs that are soothe and simple, then Saawariya is an album that you will enjoy!

Of star crossed lovers and moony nights...
Oct 02, 2007 11:46 PM3289 Views

Moody, dreamy, romantic, exotic, opulent, coy, self-indulgent, other worldly.just the terms you would use to describe the music of Saawariya. Much in sync with the nature of the movie, or as it appears from the trailers, Saawariya's music is tuned in to the sensitivities of its director. Following in the finest traditions of the best showmen of India, Mr Bhansali presents a score that does justice to the scale of his vision and his most ardent fans. Every note, every beat has been worked upon to perfection in this album that is swathed in melody from its very first note. This is an album you would play in solitude, with or without your special one.

Now that the bouquets are perfectly in place, it's time to pick some thorns. What hugely dissapoints are the hugely unimaginative https://lyrics. Not entirely pedestrian, but nothing that will get in the wah-wahs either. Sameer dissappoints  big time. I have never been a big Sameer fan but was just hoping that Mr Bhansali would get this over-rated lyricist to pen something different for a change. Mr Nusrat Badr's and Sandeep Nath's average lyrics, in comparision, seem like Ghalib.  What Sameer has done is to cobble up the most cliched phrases and metaphors, the first and last resort of imagination starved writers in India. How you wish Mr Bhansali would try Gulzar for a change. The album becomes predictable as it inches on, the last few numbers harking back to Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas.

Because the mood of the album is pitched low, you

will not see this album playing at your nearest paan shop or disco.the reason why you should buy the album in the first place.

Monty, the arranger, supercedes Monty, the music director.

Saawariya -title song

Guitar refrains, energetic singing, and a wonderful chorus mark this lovely ballad. Mr Shail(Kaun?) is wonderfully competent with the microphone and his yodeling is a throwback to the inimitable Kishoreda. Not another copy but just a singer paying his tribute. Fair enough.

*Jab se tere naina

The strains of the sitar, the dholak, and Shaan'smellifluos rendition get together to narrate the plight of the star-crossed lover. At times dreamy, most times wishful and optimistic, this number seeps into your senses with each listening.

*Masha Allah

Love, longing, and passion come together in the dipped-in-honey vocals of Kunal Ganjawala. Shreya ghosal is relegated to the alaaps. In similar lines as the "Ek Ladki ko dekha" from 1942, a love story, Masha Allah is a song that expresses the first flush of love - the love that is blind to everything but the beauty of one's beloved.

*Thode Badmash ho tum(lyrics: Nusrat Badr, Music: Sanjay Leela Bhansali)

I wonder why Mr Bhansali is taking credit for this one when this is almost a Bairi Piya in disguise. That grouse apart, Shreya Ghosal weaves magic into every note, every strain in this ethereal composition. This is love in its most forgiving and in its most blessed moments. The sense of total surrender pervades every note, every beat. When Shreya wraps up with "mere bhagwaan ho tum", she leaves you thirsting for eternity.

*Yoon Shabnami(lyrics: Sandeep nath)

A throwback to Chaand chhupa baadal mein, the notes of Yoon Shabnami are bathed and caressed in Parthiv Gohil's voice. Without even trying, you are airlifted to starlit nights, mist, dew, and all. Sandeep Nath's lyrics are adequate.

*Daras bina nahin chain

Richa Sharma's husky vocals provide a welcome break, so much like Lambi Judaai provided the contrast in the immortal musical score for Hero. Dipped in pathos and sundried in pain, Richa leaves you wanting for more.

Sawar Gayi

Although the notes are reminiscent of Bairi Piya, Shreya Ghoshal tries very hard to dispel the deja-vu and suceeds because the song ends even before you realize it has begun. More sleepy than dreamy, Sawar gayi is bed-time listening.

*Jaan-e-jaan

Kunal Ganjawala and Shreyaendlessly stretch notes in a rise-and-fall composition. Unfortunately, the crests are too few and the troughs too many. The been-there heard-that feeling continues. When Kunal cries out, "Tum mere ho" in the end of the song, it is an assertion of helplessness than of any strong conviction.

*Pari

This soap-operatic composition, although wonderfully lifted up by Kunal, borrows a little from Yeh Kiski hai aahat but most of the time, is its original uninspiring self. More an ode to the night-time fairy than one who wants to sit up and dance.

*Chhabeela

Just when you were all set to wind up the album and go into deep slumber, Alka perks you up with this 70s-styled composition. Naughty and tongue-in-cheek, Chhabeela is about a lady waiting for her chhail chhabeela, rang rangeela, tang panjama, kurta dheelawala's entry into her life. You almost know by now that this is ditty marks the heroine's entry into Saawariya.

Overall Verdict:In a rating of five, Saawariya definitely deserves a four. It is an album that will leave you moony-faced and with a silly smile on your lips. Next time, Mr Bhansali, can you just be a little more experimental and provide us with some variety - or are we being too greedy?

Monty played his cards right in Saawariya
Sep 27, 2007 08:48 PM5385 Views

Without doubts this is a typical Sanjay Leela Bhansali flick, nonetheless it keeps up with his valued grandeur and the class he offers in his movies. Bhansali must have extracted superb performances from the two new comers who belong to big families. The promos are scintillating and inviting the viewers to the theaters from the word go. Let’s see what the new comer Monty has to offer in the music department. The covers are covered with dark blue that is the brand color of the film I guess, all the artists are credited in a comprehensive fashion and the cover depicts Salman and Rani as well, it will be interesting to see them in the movie. The lyrics of most of the songs are penned by Sameer.

The album listening bon-voyage starts with the title track “Saawariya”vocalized by assistant music director Sahil Hada. The guitar plucks, innocent voice and the feeling of attachment are the plus in the song. The rhythm is catchy and seems to stick to your mind from the first listen, lyrics are also written effortlessly. Some components remind the old melodies of Kishore Kumar. The user of percussion by the music director is also admirable. Over all the first punch is short, sweet and on the target. Next is “Jab Se Tere Naina”crooned by the effervescent Shaan. The lyric is simple and woven remarkably with the free flowing music. The instrumentation is crude but has that soothing feel.

Shaan has do a marvelous job and justified the hard efforts of the music director. Subsequently, Kunal Ganjawala and Shreya Ghosal have a song to offer entitled “Masha Allah”, the beauty praising lyrics go in sync with the gentle composition. The rhythm remind of the golden era of Indian Music. Exceptionally sung by Ganjawala, his narcotic voice makes you listen to this song over and over again. Two words for this gem of a song Masha Allah. Next number in the album is“Thode Badmas” rendered astonishingly by the talentedShreya Ghosal. She has maintained perfect harmony with the simple but powerful compositon. Lyrics by Nusrat Badr is fully able to prove the qualities of a man and even Bhansali has proved his compostion skills in this song. Consequently, its time for a new singer Parthiv Gohil to croon “Yooon Shabnami”. Still with the slow and stable flow the composer has played with the percussions in this songs in a astounding fashion. The qawalli in the middle adds extra zing to this song. The lyrics is comforting and the singer scores in all bases.

At track 6 we have “Daras Bina Nahin Chain” byRicha Sharma, Shail Hada and Parthiv Gohil.Thebackground music looms in to this song from the start which give it that raw feel. Again a unadventurous composition, but this one has a dark sense attached to it. The lyric and the classical feel given to the song add to the over all aura of this song. After that Shreya Ghosal lends magical voice to “Sawar Gayi”.Thelyric by Sameer is just OK in this song but the composition makes the song a hit material. The rhythm is subtle but has the gravity to sweep you off your feet. The unsophisticated orchestration compliments the impeccable word done by the singer. Next on the list is “Jaan E Jaan” rendered effortlessly by the soulful voices of Kunal Ganjawala and Shreya Ghosal. Lyric penned down by Sameer is emotional and has that impact. The compostion and arrangement is again mind-blowing and the singers also have put their heart and soul to uplift the song.

Consequently “Pari” submerged in the addictive voice of Kunal Ganajawal is all set to enchant our ears. The praising in the lyric still continues but this song could be made better with good use of instruments. In this song Ganjawala also has some palaces to improve. Then the legendary singer Alka Yagnik vocalized “Chhabeela”.The earthy instrumentation is the USP of this song and here you have a song with that dance feel. Lyrics is just ok, on the contrary Yagnik has done a formidable job. I didn’t expect any remix in this sort of an album but last but not the least there is“Saawariya REPRISE” not remix by Sahil Hada. The comoposition is not that different that the first track but the singer proves his vocal skills very well in this fortifying track.

The album has a good balance between old and new singers which is good. The length of songs is also encouraging as the title track itself is not even 3 minutes. Though the whole album has that 70’s feel and slow tracks rule the album towards the end you seem to feel bore due to similar compositions and instruments except of the title track. All in all it is a very good album but think before buying, if you are a remix fan and like 4/4 dance beat numbers this is not the album for you. If you adore old songs and think slow compositions rock then don’t miss this masterpiece.

Saawariya Music

After Black, Sanjay Leela Bhansali(SLB) is back to his comfort zone in ‘Saawariya’, a romantic musical and that is what it sounds to be, when we listen to its beautiful soundtrack. We don’t often get to listen to such soundtracks in Indian cinema though we have heard this kind of music a plenty in SLB’s own previous films(of course Black is an exception). The reason for it sounding so beautiful and refreshing each time is that he makes movies only once in two years and it is in Devdas that we last heard this kind of music. ‘Saawariya’ has music composed by Monty and words written by Sameer.

The exquisite singing by all lead singers no matter how little space they get, the importance given to vocal harmonies(sometimes they get more space than even the lead singers), usage of dhols, exhaustive yet appropriate usage of the sound of wind chimes, usage of Chal-Chal sound, unconventional structure of the songs, innovative melodies and rhythm patterns, usage of every possible classical Indian instruments like Harmonium, Santoor, sitar, Veena, Shehnai, unique and appropriate mix of all these carefully chosen instruments which makes up for fresh orchestration and arrangements, the synth patterns and e-sounds hidden deep inside the multiple layers of otherwise pure classical songs, unexpected orchestral outbursts, sudden twists and turns to various genres of music, after a sudden pause a male vocal breaking out with an alaap accompanied by banging percussions, romanticism in every single note of the melody, the blend of western classical and Indian classical music, ‘Allah’, ‘Chand jaisi ladki’, Shreya Ghosal, Richa Sharma, and finally the seamless fusion of all the above elements making each song a gem is what you can expect out of SLB’s movie soundtrack. ‘Saawariya’ is no different.

All guitars galore ‘Saawariya’title track and its reprise version are instantly catchy. It is also the only song of the soundtrack without much of Indian classical music influences. The new singer Shail Hada is a great find who has finely rendered this song with quite a bit of yoodling. He is able to traverse between any of the western octaves effortlessly.

‘Jab Se Tere Naina’is a beautiful melody with Shaan giving his best. I don’t know how to express it but there is this great feeling that pulls you straight into the song, in every precise moment, when the song shuttles smoothly between lines without any percussion and that with catchy rhythm on heavy percussion.

‘Masha-Allah’is a clam and soulful track with more emphasis on emotions than an immediately identifiable melody. It takes time to sink in but it does for sure after two or three listening. Kunal Ganjwala has done a brilliant job in this song with his emotive husky vocals and western touches. In beautifully placed ‘Masha-allah’ motif, the tabla mukhda, a distant sounding Shreya’s Allah, an emotive vocal harmony, guitar strains, a mild piano melody and Kunal’s husky rendering of Masha-Allah run together to give us a scintillating musical experience and to make what I called the quintessential SLB mix of everything.

By this time you must have noticed that so far I have not mentioned anything about Monty, the composer of the soundtrack. Of course, due credit should go to Monty for the beautiful music. But I think SLB interferes too much into a composer’s business to an extent of stopping a composer from doing what he feels right and this could be one of the reasons why all SLB soundtracks sound the same. I am rambling about this because the next song ‘Thode Badmaash’is composed by SLB himself. Great job SLB. It is a short and sweet melody elevated to Himalayan heights by Shreya’s rendition. Monty has given a beautiful ornamentation to SLB’s tune.

I always like songs that break the conventional structure with surprise twists and turns. ‘Yoon Shabnami’ is one such song. It starts like a conventional romantic melody, turns into a qawwali, symphonic strings follows, comes back to the melody again and ends with soulful strings playing the main melody of the song. The damn catchy main percussive rhythm we heard in the trailer is from this song which kind of binds all these variations well.

‘Daras Bina nahin chain’ is a delight because of Monty’s impeccable orchestration. The whole song just wanders through various alaaps, jathis, percussions, vocal harmonies and brief instrumental motifs without any main melody except that of Richa Sharma’s ‘Saawariya’ alaap which is quite soul stirring.

‘Sawar Gayi’is an out and out Shreya show but could be best enjoyed with the visuals because the song takes quite sometime to just come to its main melody. The main melody is good though. ‘Jaan-E-Jaan’is one of those pathos songs which have a melody that blows you when played on an instrument but sounds clichéd when vocals sing with words in it. It may be because of the conventional orchestration, full of strings in the background. The piano version, violin version and the operatic version of the main melody of the song that appears in this song itself sounds damn good. Even Kunal and Shreya’s expressive singing couldn’t create much impact like they did in other songs. I am not saying it is a bad song but when compared to the other songs of this soundtrack; it sure stands out for wrong reasons. We have to wait and watch it on screen to better feel the music of this song.

Kunal excels again in ‘Pari’which has got a very unconventional melody that takes strange turns in the beginning itself. There is an unsettling feel in the music which is brought out well by an intricate orchestration. The ending is dramatic, grand and great with a full blown orchestra playing the main melody. ‘Chaabeela’is a typical bollywood festive song and mood is brought out quite well but not as catchy as the other festive songs in SLB’s previous films.

‘Saawariya’ music is great for the most part. If you have passion and patience for good music, ‘Saawariya’ is a delight. If you are die-hard fan of Himesh’s kiddish rhymes, stay miles from this soundtrack.

P.S: I submitted a mouthpad request to add Saawariya album before one Month.
