Good but not great as it was hyped
Sep 04, 2004 12:57 AM 6166 Views

Ramana was hyped as the next big thing in Kollywood and even now a lot of critics are showering praise on the young director Muragadas for his racy screenplay and neat handling of the movie. Well they may be right to some extent. We have a neat screenplay and a decent but old storyline which we have seen in some movies released earlier but it does have fiery dialogues and a good presentation.

Ramana is all about Vijayakanth who decides to abolish corruption once for all with the help of his students who are now in decent posts in government offices. The reason behind this powerful decision is told in the flashback. Vijayakanth is a happy professor with his wife Simran and daughter. And one day when Vijaykanth is out to make some purchases, the entire neighbourhood collapses due to some fault in the construction and many of the residents including Simran and her daughter lose their lives. Vijayakanth rushes to the Government Officials when he comes to know that all this was due to one person namely Vijayan, an industrialist with the necessary proof. But the incidents that he faces at the office, and on finding that these officials who are now corrupt to the core are mere puppets in the hands of Vijayan he gets frustrated on the situation and this makes him to form the ACF (Anti Corruption Force).

15 Thasildars are found missing and then the police find that 14 of them have been released after 3 days but one of them gets killed. They find some files and a tape along with the body of the dead thasildar. These files carry details of why the kidnap of the 15 thasildars had been done and the reason for the murder of one of them and have the words ACF written on it. It is understood by the police that these men where the thasildars who had indulged themselves in bribery and that they were the top 15 of the list of the corrupt thasildars. ACF sends the tape, with the message that they shall continue the kidnap of the corrupt officers in all the departments and that the No.1 corrupt shall be sentenced to death by their Anti Corruption Force.

There is fear among the corrupt officials. They come forward to file their returns. For a while there are no illegal transactions done, but the corruption soon continues in the society due to the threatening of the local mob to sign illegal documents and accept bribes. Meanwhile, the ACF finds that it is Vijayan who is the real reason behind this corruption scenario. Then the kidnapping continues. Finally with the help of a police constable played by Yugi Sethu, who takes up this case, they find the students working for the ACF and they are put to torture in the cell to reveal the name of their leader. Vijaykanth on seeing his students suffer, surrenders to the police and watch the movie for the climax! All the facts used in this movie are up to date and the director should be credited for this.

Vijayakanth has underplayed himself and he looks better on screen with some decent costumes but why they chose Ashima is the huge question. She looks plain jane and her acting is just ok. The kids in the flashback are a delight to watch. Simran is used spraingly and she gets one song in the flashback. It is Yugi Sethu who excells in his role and he sure does have a bright future in the tamil cinema. Maestro has been used more in the background score than the songs. The scenes leading to the collapse defy logic at many places while this could have been easily avoided. The hospital scenes in the first half needs a mention. They are worth appreciating.

Some scenes make you feel the level of corruption prevaling now in the society while some blow it out of proportions. Murugadas should be credited for his neat handling which lacks maturity in some scenes but he must be patted for taking a neat film without any vulgarity. This movie is in par with earlier movies like Citizen, Samurai and Mudhalvan but nowhere near Indian which was more polished than this in some technical departments. On the whole, Ramana is worth a watch in theatres.

APPLAUSE : Murugadas.

AHEM! : Storyline and Comedy ???

VERDICT : Good but not great as it was hyped.

Sending a strong message to corrupt beaurocrats
Jan 18, 2003 04:15 PM 3439 Views

On rare occasions there comes along a story that inspires you. ''Ramana'' is one such story. This film stands out purely because of its message. Indian films tend to exaggerate the truth beyond the scope of plausibility. But in this film the exaggeration has been tuned to a fine art and forms part of the symbolism that it tries to highlight. Several events depicted in this film are not entirely factual and are presented to to draw attention to the core issues being addressed in this film.

For example the story presents the stark irony in our legal and judicial system where the corrupt are protected by law. Although highly exaggerated, this irony has been tastefully presented.

The portrayal of professionals as butchers and crooks may offend some people but it has been deliberately executed in order to show an extreme case scenario.

Be it Hollywood, Bollywood or Kollywood. Computers will be the most inaccurately depicted piece of equipment in any movie. Ramana is shown searching through a list of names using Microsoft Media Player. As it is Media player has been blown up to include so many things we rarely use. Hope Microsoft doesn't see this and add a Database to the already bloated software. You will also hear the ever present beep sounds when computers are shown in Indian cinema.

Some regular formula materials are also there: two songs and some sentimental nonsense with a few orphaned kids etc. But its a necessary evil in order to make a success of any Indian film. We visit so many good web sites that have annoying banner ads. This does not stop us from visiting those sites. Similarly Indian cinema has to sell and make money. They are there for a good business reason. Ignore them.

Technically there is nothing outstanding in this film. It carries with it all the usual faults seen in an Indian movie. Bad angles, bumpy editing, poorly planned shots, senseless lighting, But all those faults can be overlooked when you come to the end of this film.

This film has managed to demarcate between fiction and fact, yet it conveys the problem of corruption in the beaurocracy somewhat effectively.

If you havn't seen this film please see it. After you have seen this film you would dearly wish for a living Ramana.

Ramana the destroyer of Ravana

Ramana, opens up with the kidnap of about 15 District collectors. After about three days one of the collector is killed by the kidnappers and along with the body of the collector police finds a bunch of files which gives details of the bribe amount taken by each of the kidnapped collector. Police also finds a note from kidnappers stating that the murdered collector is the one who is highly corrupt amongst the other kidnapped collectors. The note is signed by ACF - Anti Corruption Force and it also states that they are going to continue kidnapping corrupt government officials from every department.

Police tries to give protection to government officials, however while the entire police department is busy protecting government officials 15 Police inspectors gets kidnapped. Entire police department is busy trying to hunt out the kidnappers. One of the constables (Yugi Sethu) has a doubt that the kidnappers has a link with honest government officials from all the departments who gives them the information about the corruption in their respective department he tries to pass on this information to his superiors but he is subdued by his superiors stating that he is just a constable.

Spree of kidnapping and murder continues, the master mind behind this is Ramana (Vijayakant) who is a victim of corruption. Ramana who takes care of orphaned children has lost his wife (Simran) and daughter to corruption to take revenge and to wipe out corruption from society he forms ACF - Anti Corruption Force and tries to eliminate corruption by killing the most corrupt person.

The logic behind this is, if the most corrupt person in one department is killed, officials in other department will have a fear for life and will try not to be the most corrupt person and this fear will totally eliminate corruption. This logic works till the time an underworld don (Vijayan) starts threatening officials that Ramana will kill them only if they become the most corrupt official, however if they refuse to accept his bribe and do his work he will kill them immediately. So the officials for fear of their life accept bribes.

To teach the underworld don a lesson Ramana kidnaps 15 underworld persons and kills the underworld don. When police tries to hunt for Ramana by arresting all his followers, Ramana agrees to surrender provided his followers are released. Ramana surrenders and gets death sentence. Chief minister comes and assures Ramana that he will try his best to get him pardoned from death sentence.

Does Ramana get pardon or does he get death sentence, what happens to those children who are under Ramana's care, Ramana will provide answers to all these questions.

Ramana, directed by Murugadoss, Music Illayaraja. Performance wise Vijayakant has given a fantastic performance. The role of Simran is so miniscule that it seems she has been wasted in the movie. Illayaraja's score as usual is just melodious. Overall a movie with a different theme and presented in a totally different way.

BEST SCENE

The scene where Ramana to prove corruption prevailing in private hospitals, brings in a dead body from a government hospital and tells the doctors of the private hospital that his brother had a fall and gone unconscious he pleads to the doctor to save his brother AT ANY COST.

Outcome: The doctors with an intention of making money acts as if giving treatment for almost 20 hours and then says that inspite of their best efforts and Ramana's having spent almost Rs. 3 lacs (Rs.300,000) they could not save the person.

Result: Ramana proves by flashing out the Death Certificate issued by the Government hospital, that the patient who was treated for almost 20 hours was dead even before admitting and he asks the hospital for refund of the money spent by him with a compensation of Rs.20 lacs (

Rs.2000,000).

CONCLUSION: In a nutshell, if each and every state in India has even one Ramana, we can expect India to be a corruption free country.

Moving One Step Ahead

Post Lagaan,Indian Cinema has become aware of the high standards it suddenly set.The two majpor woods Bollywood and Kollywood however interrupted the same awareness in two different senses. Bollyworld had made an earnest effort to live up to the huge standards and thus innovation, research, storylines, marketing, versatility which were not parts of mainstream Hindi Films are highly evident nowadays.

The story has been different in Kollywood, thanks to the attitude of filmmakers who saw the big people in a league of their own, and thought they wont match the established names and finally decided to work within their limitations. This made Kollywood devoid of any progress and it as it this moment RAMANA comes in as a heartening factor. For everyone associated with the film, the movie was simply one step ahead of their standards. For the last decade,no politically based films could do an encore at the box office, except for Shankars hatrick Gentleman,Indian, and Mudhalvan. Apart from these three no film could do the trick and even big names like Maniratnam, BharathiRaja, Parthipan, Vijaykaanth, Vikram, Ajith and now Rajnikaanth himself have failed miserably. With these failures in mind, the whole Tamil Cine Industry decided to play it safe with the politically based movies. Ramana decided to break that self imposed rule and therefore deserves a huge pat in the back for cleverly chosing a political story, working with full dedication and trying to match the high standards set up by Shankar. The film was splendid teamwork with appreciable perfomance from the cast and the crew. Playing the main cast,Vijaykaanth averts his regular exxageration, over build ups and enormity of dialogues and underplayed himself for the benefit of the film, which really worked out for him. The subcast lead by Vijayan and YuhiSethu have perormed appreciably, with Simran essaying a neat cameo. The crew too are matching with the cast in perfomance. It was very fulfilling to see befitting and brilliant dialogues add on as assets to well built screenplay. While no words had to be written on Illayarajas background music,MS Prabhu make a mark for himself with his photography.Editing,a vital component of these political movies has been executed in a impeccable fashion by Suresh Urs. The director Murugadas(Dheena) with adequate pacing, wonderful emphasis and correlation, less compromises has made a name for himself with this movie.

The sincere effort made by the director to match Shankar in terms of sub cast perfomance and handling the masses is indeed praiseworthy.T hough not to the level of Shankar in these elements, they just provide the necessary impact. The film has a few flaws in the areas, there have been a few exaggerations, few biases, few places where things could have been improvised upon, but they all seem to be negligible when you consider the film as a whole. The story is once again about the evil of corruption and how a man severly affected by corruption drives the menace of corruption out of the country with his team, and what happens to his life once corruption is wiped out. There may be some areas for a critic to pick upon, but the fan is totally pleased.
