Pithhamagan - Film Music Movie Reviews

Legendary composer Ravi is no more with us
Mar 07, 2012 09:03 PM 2207 Views

A very sad news for all music lovers; legendary music director Ravi is no more with us!

He entered the film world as the assistant of Hemant Kumar. He became very famous after the film “Naagin”(scored by Hemant Kumar); as he played the famous “Been” music in the film, which was very popular(remember the song “Man dole mera tan dole”?). As an individual music director, he started working in 1955 and his first film was “Vachan”. From the beginning of his career, he selected Asha Bhosle to be his “main singer” and continued the trend till the end of his musical career. He was the one, with whom the legendary lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi had worked most; no doubt that this fact added an extra feather in his cap. We will always remember his works in films like- Dilli Ka Thug, Chaudvi Ka Chand, China Town, Aaj Aur Kal, Gumraah, Ustaadon Ke Ustaad, Bharosa, Gehra Daag, Ye Raaste Hai Pyar Ke, Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya, Kaun Apna Kaun Paraaya, Dur Ki Awaaz, Do Badan, Shehnai, Kaajal, Waqt, Khandaan, Phool Aur Paththar, Hamraaz, Nai Roshni, Do Kaliyan, Aankhen, Neel Kamal, Aadmi Aur Insaan, Anmol Moti, Ek Phool Do Maali, Dhadkan, Dhund, Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka and Nikaah.

He came up with big hits in the late 50-s and the entire 60-s. Songs like “Ye raaten ye mausam nadi ka kinaara”, “Chaudvi ka chand ho ya aftaab ho”, “Baar baar dekho hazaar baar dekho”, “Chalo ek baar phir se ajnabee ban jaye hum dono”, “Aay meri zohra jabeen”, “Chhoo lene do nazook hothon ko”, “Tumhi mere mandir”, “Babul ki duaayen leti ja” and many more- became so popular that Ravi managed to prove himself as a successful music composer; even in the tough competition with stalwarts like Shankar Jaikishan, Madan Mohan, Roshan, S.D. Burman, O.P. Nayyar, Salil Chowdhury. Hemant Kumar and Roshan. His popularity sustained also in the 60-s, even after the entries of Kalyanji Anandji, R.D. Burman and Laxmikant Pyarelal.

From the beginning of 60-s, he had a tie up with B.R. films(the B.R. Chopra house) and also with singer Mahendra Kapoor. Ravi-Mahendra Kapoor combination proved to be a very successful and popular one. The films like “Gumraah”, “Waqt”, “Hamraaz”, “Aadmi Aur Insaan” and “Dhund” gained extreme popularity with their sweet and melodious musical treasure.

Ravi had his own style of music. It was relatively soft in nature, not also very versatile like Shankar Jaikishan/ Laxmikant Pyarelal/ Kalyanji Anandji/ R.D. Burman; yet very sweet and very different from the others. His tunes were very catchy and thus became very popular also.

Along with scoring for films, he continued to work as the assistant music director and arranger of Hemant Kumar, throughout the entire career of Hemant Kumar. This proves that how generous he is and how grateful he was to his mentor Hemant Kumar.

From the mid 70-s, he took a long break of 7-8 years and didn’t work at all. Bollywood thought that the musical career of Ravi had come to an end. But his come back was just incomparable! No other music director could have thought of such a “come back”. The film “Nikaah” was his come back film and it’s music reached the peak of popularity in the beginning of 80-s. It followed with other hit musical films like- Aaj Ki Awaaz, Tawaaif, Dehleez and Tanha Tanha.

It is a bit late to review this album and the movie also got released.as everyone know the movie is a boxoffice hit.i believe that a song is good only if it blends well with the situation in the movie in that way pithamagan album excels in nativity and enhances the feel of the movie. coming to the songs

1)Pirayae

the song is penned by vaalee.the song describes a birth of cremator in the gravey yard. The song is really very melodoius with a female humming in the beginning followed by a male voice-Madhubalakrishna.He has an excellent base voice similar to yesudas.he has delivered the feel of the song well.no body can use the flute so brilliantly than illayaraja.

2)Elangathu

the song is penned by palani bharathi. The lines are very simple that even a commonman could understand and effective.the orchestarion of the song is excellent in the begium.it is great relief to hear a song without any english word . sung by sriram parthasarathy and shreya ghosal(in recent times she has been offered many songs by illayaraja and I could not believe that she doesn't know tamil.a bit of information -she has got national award for best female singer 2002 for devdas).though it has some traces of the song in solla maratha kadhai it deserves appreciation.the melody king has prooved it again.

3)Adada

the song is penned by mu.metha.very strong lyrics with indepth meaning.in recent times I haven't heard song that is very much deep in language .the percussions are very well used in this song.k.j.yesdas-it is nice to hear his voice again in illayaraj's music.the track of this song is being played in the trailer of the movie.it is a pretty good song.

4)Kodi yethi

this song is also nice blend os various age gropus.i thought this would be a song during village festival but this song was not there in the movie.the part I like the most in this song is the ending track that is very traditionalvillage music.it is only illayaraja who can give songs close to villge traditions.

5)the medly of old songs-nice all the songs are super hit songs of 60's and 70's.

a bit about background score of the movie

the background score of the movie is mind blowing.it is very easy to score a song but it is very diffcult to score background convincinlgy for a movie. As far as pithamagan,he has done an excellent job and no where it disturbs the film instead it elevates the emotions of the characters in the movie.HATS OFF-MAESTRO YOU ARE UNBEATABLE.

The music of PITHAMAGAN (Dir: Bala, Music: Ilaiyaraja) is the most awaited one this year. But the outcome is not the one which many might expect. This might be due to the fact that quantity is less, I mean there r only 2 effective songs. Let me go into the details……… 1. Piraiye….Its a trademark melodious no. of Ilaiyaraja, sung by Madhu Balakrishnan with Vaalee https://lyrics. The voice has a very soothing effect which is very necessary for the song. 2. Elangaathu….This is romantic piece probably for Surya and Laila. Voice of Sriram Parthasarathy and Shreya Ghosyal blend very well for Pazhanibharathi https://lyrics. 3. Adadaa….When I bought the audio I felt that this is going to be the song of the year, since it has the magical combo of K.J.Yesudas and Ilaiyaraja but it’s a song very much similar they did in the film ‘Desiyageetham’. But otherwise it’s a good song with lot of angry emotions with powerful lyrics of MU.Metha. 4. Aruna Runam….This is a medley of very old tamil songs. It seems to be picturised on Simran. 5. Kodi yethi….Its a devotional song of folk nature with lots of singers. It has interlude of romantic lines by Bhavatharani ….but it sounds somewhat similar to a song in ‘Manasellam’. Lyrics – NA.Muthukumar. The audio is released by “Fivestar audio” the quality of the recording is just fine. The cassette and CD cover comes in 2 designs not much impressive. On hearing the songs its very clear Bala has not compromised much to fit songs here and there unnecessarily. So whatever is there have to go hand in hand with the proceeding of the film. So if one is a hardcore fan of Ilaiyaraja it’s worth buying. JAY JAY (Dir: Saran, Music: Bharadwaj)……It has totally 6 songs. All of them are catchy and peppy. All songs have beautiful variety of instruments. There is a song which is typical of a rock song. There is a so called item no. picturised on reema sen. except the lyrics (Vairamuthu) which is just ok the album on the whole is of chartbuster variety. So Maddy is again lucky to have hit nos. again. THIRUMALAI (Dir:Raamana, Music: Vidyasagar)…..All the 5 songs are for masses similar to the songs of Dhool. There is item no. which has combo of Vijay and kiran. But the song ‘thamthaka..’is the best, the song is picturised on Vijay and Lawrence….their dance steps for the song shown in the trailer is the best seen in recent times. It’s the picturisation and the choreography which is going to complement the songs.
