Philips LX700 Reviews

A neat performer
Jun 28, 2005 06:51 PM16802 Views

Philips' LX700 is a home theater package with a 6 channel output. This setup comes with a Class D digital amplifier and accompanying features.

Features

# 50 W RMS output per channel (50 x 6)

# Support DTS and Dolby Digital decoding from appropriately encoded sources

# Support Dolby ProLogic II to stream two channel data across six channels

# 6 channel discrete input support # Digital input (coax/optical) supported

# Connect upto 3 sources (TV, AUX, Digital)

# Inbuilt TUNER (MW/FM)

# Remote control operation

Package

The LX700 consists of an amplifier unit, a passive subwoofer and five full range speakers for center, left, right, surround left and surround right channels. Connecting cables are supplied and are off good quality. Cables to connect a SACD (6 channel input) and digital coax connector are provided with the package too apart from batteries for the remote control. The length of wires provided especially for the surround left and surround right channels are fairly long though I didn't measure their exact length.

Performance

This home theater kit was hooked up through the digital input connector with a Pioneer DV-366 DVD player. Minority Report, The Village, The Passion of the Christ, Matrix Revolutions, Matrix Reloaded, The Corrs, True Lies were the DVD's used to check the multi channel output. Sound quality was quite okay after the speakers were setup in the a 10' / 8' room. Acoustic imaging was neat and dts output sounded a tad louder and richer in the lower frequencies that dolby digital output. Sound imaging sounded perfect when tested with DOLBY's propreitery logo that came in Sony's hindi movie DVD's.

There is a 'night mode' provided on the set to help when watching movies in the night. This mode increased the dynamic range of the sound to highlight lower volume parts and attenuate higher volume parts. This mode is available only in the Dolby Digital mode. CD's and other two channel sources are best played in the 'STEREO' mode. There are a variety of surround sound modes to choose from and soundscapes. There is also a separate BASS / TREBLE gain adjustment provided. Volume can be adjusted individually for the CENTER, SURROUND and SUBWOOFER channels. Delay can also be set for speakers as per the listeners need.

There is a test signal provided to aid in setting up the speakers or check them if any particular channel is not firing. Epilogue This one is a fairly decent HT package for the audiophile who wants to upgrade from a two channel setup to a multichannel setup. Priced at Rs.12,999/- inclusive of all taxes, it couldn't get any cheaper than this. This price can be lowered by a couple of hundreds at a PHILIPS retailer which totally depends on how much one would want to bargain. At the moment, PHILIPS is giving out free speaker stands as a promotion.

Finale

This setup in all probability phases out PHILIPS LX600 which sells for around 14k in a reputed online website. If you are a movie buff this is the package you'd want to setup and savor until you geton to a real high end receiver. This one is very functional and absolute value for money, what are you waiting for? Go for it! ( I don't work for PHILIPS, this is my first review on a product)

Philips LX3600 D-Love at first sight

PHILIPS LX 3600 D (this review is for Philips LX3600 D and not LX700)

I was on the look out for a DVD player for quite some time. Did not want anything expensive, just something basic that could play any disc format. Then came across the Philips ads on TV and since I had a Philips 29?? television, I felt that I might as well go in for a Philips DVD player.

When I visited the Philips dealer close to my place, and was looking around, my eyes fell on this sleek Philips home theatre system lying proudly on display. It was love at first sight?.

But then one does not buy a home theatre just cos it looks good does it??

So I discussed with the dealer regarding the specs of this system. The brief overview of the specifications of the LX 3600 D is as follows ?

A DVD/VCD/ACD/Mp3 player

 Speakers & subwoofer -1 centre dialogue speaker, subwoofer, 2 front speakers, 2 rear satellite speakers- thus 5 speakers and one subwoofer all in all. (Sounds much, but it isn?t, as all are very sleek and can fit in anywhere, very easily).

 It has a built in DTS, Dolby digital 5.1 and Dolby prologic II decoder. This ensures theatre like surround sound in your drawing room especially with DVD?s.

 Can play movies from practically any disc format - DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW (Video mode), DVD-R, DVD-Video, Video CD

 Can also play music in any format - CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3-CD

 Has auto digital tuning and auto store for FM/MW radio channels. With this you will get crystal clear digitally enhanced FM music.

 Total sound power is 300 W (spare a thought for thy neighbour before you give him the BLAST ;))

 Progressive scan? Its common with most Philips products today, what it means is that the player improves the resolution of the images and movies thus making them sharper and better. Picture quality is improved due to this.

 Also the wires and cords are colour coded thus making it very easy to assemble the whole system. It took not less than 15 minutes for my wife and me to assemble it together.

 The cords for the speakers that are given have sufficient length and thus you can make any sort of adjustment in your living /music room and keep the speakers in any nook and cranny of the room. But its best to keep the speakers as suggested by Philips in their user manual

 The amplifier provided is a D class amplifier which is supposedly more efficient than the standard AB class amplifiers used in various systems.

AND FINALLY, what really really caught my eye was the little white price tag. It costs only Rs. 16000 approx. for the package. Now though the sound and picture quality was amazing, the price made the whole package a tremendous buy.

I went home with the LX 3600 D a happy satisfied man? a man who had just fallen in love at first sight? and sound!
