My Husband and I had chosen Phillipines as our first anniversary destination after a lot of thinking. it was the best decision so far. Phillippines is an exotic vacation place, less explored, enjoyable and the most important point , economical.

Phillippines is a cluster of various small and big islands. we could only cover majorly 3 of them namely, Coron, El Nido and Manila which is the capital of Phillippines.

Every island offers different beauty and activities. mroeover, the activities are so economical, any middle class person can easily afford. we did scuba diving, snorkelling, surfing, speed boating at prices unimaginable. the ocean water is crystal clear. one can easily see the sea bed too. There is flight connectivity feom one island to another as well. Also, people would love the sea food there. there are a lot of staying options, hotels, apartments and hostels which makes it even more economical.

overall, its a place ignored but a must visit place.

Overrated and Expensive

I have been a regular to Philippines - more for business than for holidays. But, I typically end up in Manila every month and have had a chance to travel to Cebu (Visayas), Davao (Mindanao) and areas around Manila for holidays too.

First, a little background to put context to these names. Philippines has three main groups of Islands. In the north is Luzon which has the capital city of Manila. In the middle is Visayas (capital Cebu) which has the pearl of Philipino tourism - Boracay and in the south is Mindanao (capital Davao), the island that has been in the news for all the wrong reasons - Abu Sayyaf being the prime one.

Now, Manila is where you would go when you have no other option in the world. Especially if you are coming from India, why would you go to a city that mirrors Mumbai in its chaos, and its slums and is worse in traffic. There are islands of urban grandeur in Metro Manila such as the Makati area where Glorietta Mall would enamour you or the SM Megamall on EDSA that is so huge you would get cramps in your legs trying to walk the length and breadth of it all. But, if your sole purpose is holidaying, Manila is not the place. Even for shopping, Bangkok is better.

That brings me to the second point. What are you going to Philippines for? Holidaying?? Beaches?? Volcanos? Shopping for Ethnic stuff?? Shopping for International brands??

  • Beaches - OVERRATED. Malaysia and Thailand have better beaches. Cheaper too. Boracay is good but does not warrant a visit all the way from India. You should visit if you're anyways going to be in Philippines.

  • Volcanos - OK, give that Japan is too far and Pinatubo is an interesting sight, you might go to Philippines for its Volcanoes. Also Tagaytay (near Manila) might be worth a visit - its a dormant volcano inside the crater of an extinct volcano. The outer crater is filled with years of rain water which is now a wide lake and you have to sail across the lake to reach the inner volcano and then trekk up to the crater. Interesting experience.

  • Shopping for Ethnic Philippino stuff - Ok, Philippino ethnic stuff is good with solid furniture, bamboo artifacts cane showpieces. But I would guess, these are more of an indulgence for people who have money to spare.

  • Shopping for International Brands - Now that Mumbai is seeing the advent of most international brands, you won't go to Philippines for them. In any case, Bangkok is a better option for them (or better still Singapore).

If you are anyways going to Philippines, let me mention some interesting things about Philippines -

  • The Catholic culture of the place - new, coming from a Hindu dominated India.

  • Hotel Peninsula Makati, where I normally stay is a great place, esp. Spices - the South-eastern restaurant there.

  • The Durian is a fruit that gets polarising opinions from people but give it a try when there.

  • Davao in Mindanao might not be the best place to go at this time given the unrest but the Orchids in that place are really a sight.

Overall for me, Philippines would not rate among the best tourist destinations in this region. There are much better options for beaches in India (for the budget traveller) - Goa, Puri, Kerala and in Thailand, Malaysia and Andaman for the slightly more affluent one. Boracay, Cebu are overrated - go there when you've exhausted other better choices in the South-East.

Another Daughter in that part of the World

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7000 islands scattered in the blue tropical seas, blessed with pristine beaches, lofty mountains, jungles and verdant plains. The people, about 60 million Filipinos, are praised by foreign visitors ''for their outgoing friendliness and gracious hospitality, quick to smile and eager to make visitors feel at home.'' All these, plus the prevalence of English, says the visitor, make the Philippines one of the most pleasant countries in Asia to live in and explore.

Filipinos are proud of their democratic form of Government which was restored by the historic '' people power'' revolution of 1986, the most significant event in recent Philippine history.

Manila, the old capital, is one of the 17 municipalities (4 cities, 13 towns) of Metropolitan Manila, the national capital region of the Philippines. Its population is about 8.5 million, 98 per ent are literate in Pilpino, English or both. It has the famous Manila Hotel. Its currency is Peso having 100 centavos.

I have visited the Philippines thrice; twice to Manila, and once to Tagatay for attending conferences. I had attended the International Conference on 'Education and Development' held at Manila, in the historic Manila Hotel, in November 1988, and had presented a paper titled ''Technologies Available for Nonformal Education.'' Subsequently, I had attended another planning meeting of the Asia-South Pacific Bureau of Adult Education, prior to the Conference held at Tagatay.

The Filipino people go out of the way to help foreigners. Once my elder daughter Kalpana had gone to the Philippines as a participant-researcher on behalf of the World Council of Religions. She was in an island. We were then in Delhi. We got the news from Radio and TV that there was severe storm in the Philippines. We got really worried. I telephoned to her host, who was in Metro Manila, and got one contact number to be called. I did so, but failed to get any response. The telephone operator at that end, after dialing several numbers in quick succession, put us in touch with Kalpana, whose first sentence was '' I am fine.'' Before continuing the conversation with her, I thanked the telephone operator, another young girl, who said,'' I could realise how anxious you were to know the whereabouts of your daughter. After all, I am a young girl, whose parents get equally anxious about me, and it was very easy for me to get Kalpana on line. I have not done anything more. Won't you accept this as a small token of love from another daughter in this part of the world ? How sweet ?

An Exotic Metro Manila

GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY

A group of 7,107 islands lying at the southern tail of China and northern tip of Malaysia is the country called Philippines, the land of Filipinos. It has countless of dialects but most spoken is Tagalog, also called Filipino language, and (surprise!) English.

The country was under Spanish rule from the year 1521 until 1900. Sometime in the 1500s, Villalobos, a Spanish military commander, named the country in honor of King Philip II of Spain. After ceding to the US in 1900, the Philippines was invaded by Japan which ruled until 1944 when the US forces reclaimed the land and gave us the independence we longed for.

Metro Manila, a group of 13 cities and 4 towns including the capital city of Manila, is the financial hub of the economy where the seat of the government is located, likewise with bank head offices and stock exchanges. This is the main reason why people from other regions troop to Metro Manila, making it a haven of squatters. The congestion results in high crime rate, pollution and heavy vehicular traffic.

THE PEOPLE

Filipinos are generally friendly, hospitable and accommodating. Good food is a passion and celebration is a must that’s why Filipinos never run out of festive occasions. Every 24th of June there’s the San Juan fiesta where people throw water to each other as a tribute to St. John the Baptist. There’s also the lechon parade where you can sample roasted pigs being paraded in the streets. In January there’s the Ati-atihan in Antique where people wear masks and dye their skin black in the fashion of a Mardi gras. For diversions, there’s the weekly horseracing and cockfighting. Small basketball courts are everywhere and people go crazy over soap operas on television.

A long doorless cab called jeepney, that can seat up to 19 people, is the chief transportation and a symbol of the Filipino’s ingenuity. The same goes for the tricycle, a motorcycle with a sidecar that can transport up to 8 people at times. Another innovation is the pedicab that is similar to Hongkong’s rickshaw.

TOURIST SPOTS

The Philippines boasts of countless tourist spots. Just 60 kilometers south of Metro Manila is Los Baños where you will find a long line of swimming pools with the steamy water coming straight from an inert volcano called Mount Makiling. The windy Tagaytay gives you a view of the active Taal volcano, one of the smallest in the world, that is only 2 hours away from Manila. For the kids, a 30-minute travel by car can bring you to Enchanted Kingdom, a theme park patterned after Disneyland.

Up north is a 6-hour trip to Baguio, a city in the mountains with cool temperature that smells of pine trees and strawberries. Farther up is Vigan, a town in a Spanish era setting or Laoag city with it’s clean beaches and a casino. Perhaps one might want to see the famous pyramid of Manaoag where “faith healing” is held everyday.

Down south you will find the best beaches in Boracay, just a 30-minute plane ride, and finest resorts with golf courses and world-class hotels. There’s also Plantation Bay resort in Cebu City, about 45-minute plane ride away, with a terrain carved out from Fantasy Island. Or one can visit the majestic Mayon volcano and savor the pili nuts and native handicrafts of the Bicol region.

For the unconventional, there’s the Balaw-balaw restaurant very near Metro Manila. Owned by a famous painter, it serves exotic dishes like meat of boa constrictor, monitor lizard, cured deer meat and fried frog’s legs. Or one can indulge in a jungle safari in Subic Resort where monkeys will wake you up and bats will scare you at night.

ONLY IN METRO MANILA

Cigarette is being peddled by the stick in the streets and discourteous driving is the order of the day. Cellphone snatching is not news anymore likewise with kidnappings and bank robbery. Foreigners smell of money so the beggars and street vendors pester them no end. Fake goods abound so the initiated should beware.

Nightlife is booming with a variety of live sex shows to choose from. Hookers can be picked up in some boulevards and it is easy to buy illegal drugs. Sing-along bars that cater to foreigners can sometimes be a prostitution den. Massage parlors are no different, offering different kinds of services to their clients.

But despite all these, Metro Manila is still the place to go if only to see the sight of the setting sun in Manila Bay.

Manila: Thrilling,Yes,It Can Be !

I have visited Manila, the capital city of the Philippines, some four times and I like the city very much.. More specifically I like the Filipinos who are warm and friendly, very hospitable and have a thoroughly infectious love of life. They have been described as the Latin Americans of South East Asia and certainly they are markedly different from Cambodians, Malays,Thais,Vietnamese or Indonesians.

Night life is certainly alive and well in Manila and it is comparatively cheap;much cheaper, for example, than Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Hong Kong. Whatever the economic and political problems you cannot easily dim the Filipinos exuberance for life.

The favorite beer in town in San Miguel which is owned by a company based in the Philippines. Makati is a sophisticated district and here you

will find the stamping ground of the very well-heeled,rich,Fillipinos. Roxas Boulevard-the Orchard Road of Manila-is another very lively area, full of plush hotels, nightclubs, and good eateries.

A hot dance spot is reputed to be Beck's Bar at the Hotel Grand Boulevard; the hotel hosted the Playboy Club in the 1970's and has long enjoyed a good reputation for night life.Other districts famed for entertainment include the Ermita and Malate area of old Manila.

Of course Manila has its seedy areas with sex shows, low class bars and pick up joints and the income gap between rich and poor in this city is very wide. The booming red light district in Ermita was reputedly ''cleaned up'' in the early 90's but there are still some raunchy bars around.

Food wise I do not rank Manila as highly as I do Delhi,

Singapore,Kuala Lumpur,Bangkok or Hong Kong. The local dishes are rather bland, there is a lack of really fiery or spicy dishes, and the fast food is generally mediocre.

Having spent 500 years under the Spanish and a further 50 years as a US colony, not surprisingly there are a number of bodegas specializing in Spanish cuisine as well as US style fast food haunts.Manila also has some good Cuban-style eateries and gourmet coffee houses. There are also a number of French restaurants in town and seafood and cold beer is pretty good in the capital of the Philippines.

Some of the hotels have elegant,up market-style coffee houses and if you are prepared to pay you can get very good food in the Philippine capital. However, the middle range restaurants serving up very tasty food that are common in Singapore,KL, Bangkok or Hong Kong, are a bit thin on the ground.

Nominally the Fillipinos speak English,as well as the national language,Tagalog. There

is a high literacy rate of over 94% and a generally well educated population. However, be warned, they often have a rather strange accent-a sort of a cross between American and Spanish English.Sometimes too there is use of Taglish which is when English and Tagalog words are combined in the same sentence. Flamboyant expression also seems to be a distinct characteristic of this fun-loving people.

The artistic talents of the Filipinos are well known-not for nothing do a lot of the hotels in

Singapore,Kuala Lumpur,Penang and Hong Kong employ singers from the Philippines.Even Hollywood has

long recognized the local talent and Animation companies such as Walt Disney and Hanna-Barbara,

have a lot of stuff done by their subsidiaries in the Philippines.

If you have a social conscience there is still something a bit disturbing

about Manila. Whilst foreign visitors, especially those from the USA and Europe, will be regally welcomed and can have a whale of a time,it dosen't take long to realize there are a lot of poor people in this city.

The income differential between the rich and the poor is obscene.

That is why for me,Manila,is very much the city of contrasts. To be fair though there

are few more friendly and welcoming people than the citizens of Manila.!
