We visited Pahelgam in October 1983.
We had taken a tourist bus from Sri nagar.
It was off season. We saw the two good hotels there.
Ultimately we settled for a room with a view in Hotel Natraj, as it gave us a huge off season discount.
We could get good vegetarian food in a gujarati Hotel in the market in Pahelgam below.
The river Liddar flows through Pahelgam. A visit to the river was nice , as foaming water flows through rounded boulders and stones. a picturesque spot.
On the other side of the river Liddar were the forests of fir trees on the hill.
We went to Chandanwadi where we saw snow frozen over the river and making a bridge of ice.
The route to the pilgrimage place of Amarnath passes this way.
We put on the colourful Kashmiri dresses and posed for souvenir photos before the professional photographers.
We just sat in the Natraj Hotel and enjoyed the sights of the hills covered with alpine type trees, the high mountains peeping from behind, the river flowing through the rounded stones below the grassy slopes.
When we woke up next morning, I was the first to look out of the room with a view and noticed the transformation which had taken place due to snowfall.
The hills around were covered with fresh snow. Upto a particular point there was snow and after that a line appeared to have been drawn, below which there was no snow.
Everyone was excited, but wondered why there was no snow in the Pahelgam town.
I had an explanation for it. Due to the heat whatever snow that had fallen had melted in the city. Where the soil was not warm the snow had remained unmelted.
We again decided to go to Chandanwadi where fresh snow had been reported.
It was wonderful to see the fresh white snow there, make snowballs and play.
A child just kept on picking up handfuls of snow as it atracted him and then cried because of the cold wetness of melting snow.
We heard that there was a very beautiful lake near Pahelgam, but it had snowed and the journey would be difficult, hence the scenic place was left for seeing in the wall posters, which adorn many houses all over the world.
