A problemless DVD player

Before we get down to the review for onida dfx-7100

Let us know as to what actually a dvd is?

Dvd stands for – digital versatile disk

And not digital video disk

It wasn’t really that long ago that vhs tapes dominated the home video market, but now, dvds have all but wiped them out completely. Going from tape to disc gave the home theater experience a major upgrade, and ushered in an era of feature-packed special edition home video. A dvd is very similar to a cd, but it has a much larger data capacity. A standard dvd holds about seven times more data than a cd does. This huge capacity means that a dvd has enough room to store a full-length, mpeg-2-encoded movie, as well as a lot of other information.

Here are the typical contents of a dvd movie:

Up to 133 minutes of high-resolution video, in letterbox or pan-and-scan format, with 720 dots of horizontal resolution (the video compression ratio is typically 40:1 using mpeg-2 compression. Soundtrack presented in up to eight languages using 5.1 channels dolby digital surround sound. Subtitles in up to 32 languages.Dvd can also be used to store almost eight hours of cd-quality music per side. The format offers many advantages over vhs tapes: Dvd picture quality is better, and many dvds have dolby digital or dts sound, which is much closer to the sound you experience in a movie theater.

Many dvd movies have an on-screen index, where the creator of the dvd has labeled many of the significant parts of the movie, sometimes with a picture. With your remote, if you select the part of the movie you want to view, the dvd player will take you right to that part, with no need to rewind or fast-forward. Dvd players are compatible with audio cds. Some dvd movies have both the letterbox format, which fits wide-screen tvs, and the standard tv size format, so you can choose which way you want to watch the movie. Dvd movies may have several soundtracks on them, and they may provide subtitles in different languages. Foreign movies may give you the choice between the version dubbed into your language, or the original soundtrack with subtitles in your language.

Here is a list of the capacities of different forms of dvds:

Single-sided/single-layer 4.38 gb 2 hours

Single-sided/double-layer 7.95 gb 4 hours

Double-sided/single-layer 8.75 gb 4.5 hours

Double-sided/double-layer 15.9 gb over 8 hours

You may be wondering why the capacity of a dvd doesn’t double when you add a whole second layer to the disc. This is because when a disc is made with two layers, the pits have to be a little longer, on both layers, than when a single layer is used. This helps to avoid interference between the layers, which would cause errors when the disc is played if an average dvd movie were uncompressed, it would take at least a year to download it over a normal phone line.

Even though its storage capacity is huge, the uncompressed video data of a full-length movie would never fit on a dvd. In order to fit a movie on a dvd, you need video compression. A group called the motion picture experts group (mpeg) establishes the standards for compressing moving pictures. When movies are put onto dvds, they are encoded in mpeg-2 format and then stored on the disc. This compression format is a widely accepted international standard. Your dvd player contains an mpeg-2 decoder, which can uncompress this data as quickly as you can watch it.

Now let us get to know about the onida dfx-7100 dvd player. Often, due to bad handling, dvds get scratched, leading to loss of audio and video information. But onida’s in-built superior scratch error correction technology with increased intelligence for super accurate reading of scratched–discs restores and plays disc with ease.

With the lens mechanism and disc reading algorithm working in tandem, it ensures continuous playback of scratched discs without long skips and mosaic patterns.

The onida dvd players come with progressive scan feature. The benefits of progressive scan are flicker free images with high clarity as it scans 60 frames per second as compared to normal scanning of 30 frames per second, so if your display supports progressive scan, the onida dvd players will help provide sharper, clearer and flicker free image. And there’s more. Thanks to 5.1 theatre surround out you can directly connect separate channel outputs (front left and right, rear left and right, center and woofer) to the av receiver for the ultimate theatre surround experience while playing dolby digital discs. So go ahead, get an onida dvd player and enjoy the uninterrupted show.

The player comes with one year warranty, and all the necessary cords & accessories required.

The sound and picture quality of the player is fantastic…the dolby digital decoder that is built in the system was able to decode the dvd movies in all the 6 channels just the right way the director of the movie has wanted the movie to sound… being an audiophile sort i always experiment with my systems and check the capabilities and limits of my player. After watching mi-2 at inox, i tried the same dvd on my onida dvd and i am absolutely satisfied with the channel separation and frequency limits of the player. It had delivered 99% of what i had watched in the inox forum

Onida DFX 7100 - A ''No Problem DVD''
Jun 02, 2006 12:33 PM 9983 Views

Hi this is my 2nd rvw so fa.

I have this habit of analysing thoroughly all the available products in the market before buying shortlisted one, so much so that all the shopkeepers start to recognise my face the moment I enter shop. & why not?? we r the one who will be paying the prise! in that case we are the one who could become the ''Bakra''. (if choice fails, right?).

well, too many brands to choose from & too much technoligical specs. to understand when u actually go in a market to buy a DVD. I didnt want to make a PhD on DVD so I thought my primary requirement is to see my SHAADI KA VIDEO, & play DVD Movies & MP3s.

Play it safe guys. DVD has to have 5.1 Channel compatible & should play maximum types of formats. Like DVD, Jpg, CDR, CDRW, MP3, all these are comman formats. if you go for 2.1 channel DVD the prise difference is hardly anything say about 300 - 400 Rs. So I gone through nearly all (Mitashi, Godrej, Videocon Included) DVDs. The primary concern is Brand & aftersales service (If need be). To play it safe I chose ONIDA DFX 7100, I thought it has got it all. Here u can bargain on MRP also I got it for few hundred less on MRP.

The Onida DFX 7100 is a good DVD player, using since 1 year with no problem at all. plays scratched discs as told on a carton. DVD quality is like watching a movie in a theatre. Its easy to operate (my 6 yr kid operates it smoothly).

Now some cons: It plays most of the formats but not all of the formats. If you are a computer 'download geek' it may show thumb down. Like it dosent recognise MPEG the very common format and few other formats as well. so at times I feel let down. & think of 'kaash, I should have known this fact & opt for other brand. not a problem. In fact, as far as it plays my shaadi ka video, I don't have to go for any other brand!!

The new generation DVD player
Sep 03, 2005 10:37 AM 16365 Views

I was planning to buy a DVD player since a long. My first choice was Philips 320 because of its mobility. But then I come to know from Mouthshut that it has problem with almost every thing. It’s open from top, so its lens is vulnerable to dust. It is not a new generation DVD player. Its material is of poor quality. All this was enough to change my mind. Then I went for Onida–7100.

First I will start with the problems of Onida-7100,

  • I fill it from the first day. The Disc tray seems very delicate. Even, every time putting disc into it, I think that the tray is going to break if I push it little more.

  • If you are planning to buy 5.1 speakers, add cost of amplifier with it, as the player is not coming with inbuilt amplifier.

  • One more problem is with the screen saver. It gets activate if STOP mode is continue for 15 second. Good! But if you need to ON your TV, while playing audio CD, screen saver is not going to help you, as the player will not be in the STOP mode by that time.

Now The Positives,

  • Good picture and sound quality.

  • Once I tried to run a scratch CD on my friend’s DVD player and it was not even opening. But on the Onida DVD player, the Scratch CD ran smoothly.

  • After reading its user manual, I come to know that each DVD player has been set for a reference code based on the country. The DVD should match with the reference code to be run by the player. As Onida is made in India, you can be sure that it will run all the Hindi movie DVDs.

  • The Remote is very elaborate and easy to understand. All most all function are given on it. You will definitely learn some new features after going through the remote.

  • The player is Slim and light weight and fairly portable. It can fit into a medium size bag.

Onida Sucks

I used to watch CDs on my computer, but it din't have a DVD drive. The DVD players price were plummeting down like anything so I thought it is high time I bought a DVD player

I was always suspicious of Onida Products but never got to try one. After watching their commercial of Magic of playing scratched DVDs I thought that I would give it a try. On checking I was surpised to find this product at the lowest price range in branded DVD players. But even at the first sight the buttons seemed not to be properly aligned. I asked the dealer for another piece, he had none, but assured that it was like that in all the pieces. The DVD tray was also of low quality plastic I was impressed that it had analog output for the 5.1 Speaker system which most other systems lacked. So I thought I would better take this ugly duckling and give it a try. I asked the dealer for a demo and it worked fine.

After taking it home I first played an audio cd. After playing for a few minutes the sound seemed to break. I brushed it away thinking that I may not have connected it properly. Then I connected it to my TV ensuring that I connect it firmly, and sat happily to watch a DVD. It is then all hell broke loose. After few minutes of happy watching the sound started breaking again, then after sometime I was not able to hear any at all. Remember at this point that I always buy only orignal CDs and DVDs , never pirated ones, and I take good care of them too. Now I realised that something is wrong with the player. I now tried playing another CD but it wont read it at all. Frustrated I switched it off and checked my power outlet for proper voltage. It was fine. I even tried connecting it to my computers UPS, but nothing worked. So I switched it off again and left it go. After sometime when I tried it seemed to work fine. This time I was noting the total time it was playing and loo.. when the counter crossed the 15 min. mark the devil started to work again , First the sound got murky and finally stopped altogather. Since it was late in the night to fiddle with it any more I shut it off and went to sleep.

The next morning I thought I would give it a try and Played another CD, again to my agony the thing stopped working after 15 mins. Now I had an enlightment that the player is malfunctioning once it started to heat after some minutes of playing. So I tried cooling it with one of the small fans that you see inside a computer. And to my surprise it worked fine this time. Now I knew that the piece is defective, May be a manufacturing fault that happens once in a while.I was really frustrated at this point and began looking for the authorised service centers near me. Then after a thought I took it to the dealer from whom I purchased. He too ran it for 15 mins. and conformed that it is a fault. He said that he had not received any complaints on this product so far. He promised me that he would replace it with a new one when the stock arrives, which he said would be 2 days. He on his part immediately placed orders to the main dealer for few new pieces. Here comes the second part of my agony. After repeated calling, the stock did not arrive for a whole week. Then I went in person to the show room and talked to him. He assured me that he would have the stock in 2 more days. But even after a week more the expected stock did not come. Now it was 15 days since I returned the defective piece. So I again went to the showroom and blasted the fellow. But poor fellow was not to be blamed. He rang up the main dealer and gave the phone to me. The main dealer increased my frustration by being very unresponsive.

Now I thought that it is enough of Onida and let me settle for another audio brand which I always trust. So I exchanged the piece for another brand thought it costs me 1500 bucks more. It has a few more features like multi disc resume and text display on the DVD player which the Onida din't have. Now I am happy enjoying my new player and I think won't go for onida again. Finally I never got to try whether it really plays scratched CDs. Devil be with it.Buyers beware. Make sure you play it atleast for 20 mins at the dealer before buying

It plays scratched CDs.

Consumer electronics in city like Mumbai are doing flourishing business. The kind of advertising they do, the gifts and discounts they offer sometimes is mind boggling.

We decided that it was finally time when we bought a DVD player for ourselves. Not because everyone in our neighbourhood bought one before us, but we really wanted to add it to our household peripherals.

We ventured out on Saturday evening and decided to return home with a ''good DVD player'' after 5-6 shops and browsing through several models we could not decide which was a ''good one'' and we returned home. Sunday evening we ventured out again and shortlisted a few brands and models (I would not name all because I do not want to give any comparison analysis).

In terms of weight, sleekness, colour and design, the various disc formats it could play, the price and warranty period we bought ONIDA DFX 7100. We were told by the dealer that we were lucky as the company had recently reduced the prices but keeping the same high-end version.

What I am going to write now is not from the specification book but after trying on my own.

This DVD player can play Audio & Video CDs, CD-Rs, MP3, DVD, Kodak picture Images (downloaded from digicam). However I found that it does not play certain MP3 songs - I don't know why. The famous TV commercial boasted that this DVD player can even play a scratched CD. So I tried one of the scratched CD that I had and bingo it played like any other CD.

Other features The DVD player is Home theater ready. Means you can directly connect it to your amplifier, home theater speakers and TV. I do not have a home theater system but I could easily connect it to my TV and also to my amplifier. So I can enjoy a good film on TV and have a good sound effect through the amp-speakers combination.

The DVD has full function remote control which is easy to use and understand. I was surprised to see that the packed piece came with batteries included for the remote. Picture and sound The picture and sound quality depends on the condition of the CD or DVD. A good branded DVD gives excellent, sharp and clear picture quality. You hardly have to adjust the TV. Regarding audio CDs, the player gives out every note recorded on the disc.

Warranty The company offers 1 year warranty and claims that so far they have not received any serious technical complaints.

My own concern The CD drive in which you place a disc, looks thin and is made of a clear plastic. Hopefully they used an unbreakable plastic like Polycarbonate for the same. If someone handles it roughly then I have a doubt that it may break someday.

The DVD to TV connection cable is short for my 29 inch TV. So I had to make some small correction in my wall unit to place the TV and DVD player close enough.

Conclusion If someone is looking for a good standard DVD player which plays almost all the formats, this one is a good bargain. Some other DVD players offer AM/FM radio included, but the price jump is quite high compared to this one.
