Olympus fe-26

Package & build quality

It was morning, had just finished my tea. As soon as i opened up the news paper, i came across this add. “olympus 12m.p in just 4000rs (80$)”. I knew olympus was a nice brand so decided to go for it…and i’m really glad i did so!!! Well guys, i must confess that this is my first camera. Before, i used my 1.3 mp mobile phone to take my pics. But, i also had a Sony handy-cam for a while, so i do have little experience in shooting.   Although my father owns two slr’s (nikon and cannon), i never had the patience to experiment with one of those as they were non-digital ones. Plus you don’t have to worry about bad pictures or prints as you always have the option ‘delete’.

And you can also edit photos in computer. (which most of u must be aware of)

The package includes one data cable, a micro sd card attachment, camera pouch, two “aa” size batteries, one software/driver cd, strap, manual and camera. The first thing you notice is that the camera looks quite sleek. Its really a nice looking camera!! The front side has silver colored body (there are other color options as well), which is nice and rear is made up of  black colored plastic body. Even the buttons are black and made up of same plastic. This is a bit of a down side as the ‘rear part’ looks quite tacky. Also the buttons are quite flimsy. The ‘complete black’ rear causes difficulty during night shoot, making you to constantly search for buttons. That’s not a major concern. You’ll get over it. Overall, the camera feels sturdy and light (batteries included).

The l.c.d. Is nice, you can even see it during daylight.

Pictures

This camera has the following image size:

12mp (3968*2976)

5mp(2560*1920)

3mp (2048*1536)

1mp (1280*960)

Vga (640*480)

16 : 9 (1920*1080 for wide screen )

I generally use 5 mp.Then there are two compression options; fine & normal.‘fine’ almost doubles the image memory size. But the picture quality is enhanced greatly.

Taking pictures

If you are a first-timer (like me), i would suggest to do a bit of research of the following topics:

How a camera works.

Iso(international organization for standardization)

Shutter speed

Aperture

This factors would definitely help you while taking pictures.

Now, this camera has five shooting modes:

P-mode: this setting is basically for manual tuning. You have access to all the functions. You can add effects with the help of  “magic filter”, control exposure & white balance. The camera just focuses before taking picture. Macro & super-macro pictures can also be taken in this mode. The quality of picture totally depends upon your settings.

Iauto: in this mode you just have to point and shoot… that’s all. Works great during daylight. There is ‘face recognition’ feature. There is “lock-on” in which the moving subject can be locked and the camera focuses accordingly. Images can be grainy at times if lighting conditions are not adequate.

Scn: this is the most useful mode. It has predefined settings according to various conditions. And you also have access to certain functions like iso setting , white balance etc.

When you select scn mode you enter a submenu. There are 13 options:

Portrait

Landscape

Night scene

Night+portrait

Sport

Indoor

Candle

Self portrait

Sunset

Fireworks

Cuisine

Documents

Pet

Digital stabilization mode: can be used to take pictures of fast moving objects. But good lighting is required. Otherwise grainy images are obtained.

Video shooting: it shoots in two modes

Vga(640*480)

Qvga(320*240)

With 30/15 fps and no audio.

Video quality is nice. The batteries drain out quite fast. I prefer manual tuning rather than auto. It has a 3x optical zoom, not quite useful but is handy at times. You can even stitch up to 9 images into a single panoramic image. It really works quite well. You can even connect the camera directly to the printer and print pictures.

Another good thing is that the shutter speed totally depends upon the lighting conditions and not on the mode.

I  highlighted only the main features of this camera. There are many other functions(cropping , resizing, etc) within the camera itself. Overall it’s a good camera with lot of potential. Can do wonders if in the hands of  a professional. Hope you fine this review useful. I’ve added pictures for better understanding.
