Live Life King Size!

May be this space is for experiences of short travels to various destinations.

But I am to share my long term experience with u all, I came here as a S/W Consultant in one of the biggest Indian Company and now it is 4 years that I am here in Lagos, Nigeria.

It is a difficult place for new comers but once u settle in, u can live like a king here.

No jokes, one thing for sure king always needs security, so no wandering around too much at night, king does not walk on roads alone and so do Indians here.

One of best places to earn n save money, highly corrupted nation, but u are here to make money not for social work.

Lot of Indians approximately 30,000 in Lagos itself, which is like Bombay for India.

Quite a few number of Indian Restaurants, new bollywood movies easily available on VHS,VCD and DVD. Worship places, temples, mosques, and, churches are abundant.

Locals are distributed in 2 classes - the filthy rich and the poor people, Indians fit in the Upper middle class here, get lot of respect from locals.

Job here can get u savings of minimum Rs. 30,000, car, driver and house provided by the company.

Apapa, Victoria Island, Ilupeju, Ikoyi and Ikeja are good places for Indians to stay.

Apart from Indians many Lebanese citizens have captured the trading market.

If your fate is not with u, armed robbers or area boys can really bring hell on you.

Development lags in all sectors, no street lights, communication still very expensive, except oil almost everything else is imported.

All n All live merrily, safely and spent some years to make good savings for yourself.

Cheers,

Do You want an Adventure..?
Aug 09, 2004 11:33 AM 5212 Views

Africa.

This is an amusing place to visit. But It is very highly recommended to know a lot, do a lot of research before entering this adventure. You think freefalling, bungee jumping are adventure sports..? Travel to Nigeria (That?s the only place I lived for about 18 months) will give you a better sense of adventure

Travel

I am one of the most fortunate souls to have traveled by one of the most craziest airlines in the world, Ethioipian Airlines. I will not jump too much into this subject, will give u just a glimpse. In short, I would say traveling in an Airconditioned Bus in Mumbai would have given you a better sense of comfort and luxury. We had to change Flight in a place called Addis Ababa, an airport which would be dwarfed in comparison with some of the better bus stands in the country. Entry into the aircraft is on a First come first served basis. Allocation of seats is a good prelude to the Musical Chair. In Short, It is a Stampede really. That?s enough of travel.

Nigeria, The Adventure Capital of the World

As I had mentioned earlier, daily life in Nigeria is an adventure of sorts. Everyday survival in Nigeria is in itself a question mark. You will never know what is going to happen at the end of the day

The Country

It is one of the better developed countries of Africa. The country boasts a long Western Atlantic coastline. The Atlantic is beautiful, really. You can spend hours on the beach. Fantastic blue green waters, very friendly beach resorts.

Nature has cast its beauty spell all over the country.

The country is rich in Oil Resources, but still lacks economic growth. We can hear about corruption in India, Nigeria is the King. The cost of Petrol is about 21 Naira per litre which will come to around 8-10 Indian Rupees.

National Language is English.

There are some very very attractive beach resorts around the country. ?The Eko Beach Resort?, about 80 Kms from Lagos, is a beautiful resort. There are about 100 Cottages which will cost you anywhere between 70 ? 200 USD per day. You can bargain to get a good deal. There is nothing more heavenly than spending the night on the Beach, which is more like a private beach. The water is suitable for all kind of water sports, including surfing. Water sporting is one of the best adventure sports you can get to do while being in Nigeria.

The People

The people can be broadly divided into two categories, The Extremely Rich and The Pathetically poor. There is no concept of a middle class. On the non-financial side also, you can base them into 2 categories , the Extremely Good and the dangerously bad.

In general, the people I have come across are very very friendly. They are very emotional. When they want to enquire about you and your people, they say ?Hello, How are my people ??.

The Nigerians, have an interesting accent which I found difficult to grasp initially and got used to in the course of my stay there. They have this habit if appending an ?o? to all their phrases.

Plenty Go Slowoo: Heavy Traffic Jam.

Now the catch. Enter at your own Risk

Needless to day, this country is filled with fun and adventure, But there is a very dangerous aspect to this Country, which by least to say, is a show stopper for anybody who wants to ?LIVE? here.

Armed Robbers

One of the most respected profession to choose from if you are a resident. People are harassed by these groups of professionals. Their strategy and approach is simple.

Dress up as Officers and stop your car. If you encounter this, DO NOT show absolutely any form of resistance, give them every thing they ask without offering least of the resistance. They will let you go. If you resist, be assured you are DEAD.

Every country has its share of highway robbing, mugging etc, but this country is BAD, really BAD.

Area Boys

Well, they are not as dangerous as Armed Robbers. These guys are more or less like our Hindi movie dadas who go out collecting charity money from shopkeepers, auto drivers, taxi drivers etc. Well if they demand, you better give what u have otherwise you shall end up definitely in a Hospital (Which can be more dangerous actually..?). I am still shocked when I recollect the incident where I saw a Cab drives being shot dead in the Market place because he did not handover the cab keys to these guys. (It was the most awful and pathetic cab I have ever seen)

Instant Justice

No need for Police. I was going to work in the morning. I happened to see a large crowd pelting stones on one funny looking person, who had a truck tire around his neck. After 5 minutes of stone throwing (the traffic was stopped to witness this spectacle), people decided enough is enough. I thought great, now we can leave. It happened, the most unexpected and gruesome sight of my life. This man was set ABLAZE ALIVE. My car driver was so cool about it. It seems the guy who was burnt alive was a car thief who unfortunately was caught and that the man knew well that was going to be killed by the public.

I was desperate to get my work completed in that godforsaken place and returned to India after spending about 18 months. Believe me there is nothing like HOME

There are innumerable other incident where myself and my colleagues have suffered, which I would rather not go into. You can make a lot of Money and live an exquisite lifestyle. Do you think it is worth it..??

My return Travel was great. Kenyan Airways and Emirates and very lucky to be

back in One Single Piece.

PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO RATE THIS IF YOU HAVE TIME. COMMENTS AS ALWAYS, MOST WELCOME.

Think Again!
Mar 08, 2002 10:23 AM 4623 Views

Nigeria has always been close to my heart. No....I do not like Nigeria. In fact I believe that it is one of the worst countries. But I owe my whole life to this soil, where my father has been for the past 22 years. The first time I had gone to Nigeria was as a seven-year-old in December 1979. After some major events in my life, I finally came back to India in May 1980 and then remained in India. But my father has been staying there for all this time, earning to support our family. And hence the statement that I owe my whole life to Nigeria. Then why do I say that I do not like Nigeria? Read on....

First and foremost, Nigeria does not have common facilities. The NEPA(Nigerian Electric Power Association) is one pathetic service. The lights go frequently and many times in small towns, the NEPA does not come for days together. One more thing that you can abundantly see in this land is poverty. In fact, Nigeria is broadly divided in two social strata, the ultra rich and the extreme poor. In my books, I call this situation a National economic crisis. Nigeria, inspite of having its own oil production, does not have petrol for the people. ''No Petrol'' is one of the most common signboards at petrol pumps. Now, how is this possible in an oil-exporting country? The answer is simple. Corruption! Corruption at the high levels.

But the most disgusting point about Nigeria is undoubtedly CRIME! This crime has different faces. One of them is armed robbers. As the name suggests, these are robbers armed with weapons, which they use quite often. Many unsuspecting highway travellers have lost their lives to these terrors. Their modus operandi is simple. Stop a highway vehicle under the disguise of police who are checking vehicles. Once the vehicle stops, the driver is asked for the money and the car. Even a bit of resistance from the driver is an invitation for death. I remember that this was a nuisance when I was a kid of seven, and I see that this is a nuisance when I am a father of a kid. There has been absolutely no combating done by the government regarding this problem. The first death I saw in my life was of a certain Mr.Shah who was shot dead by these armed robbers.

Another face of crime here are the Areaboys. Generally found in big cities like Lagos, these people go around demanding money from standing vehicles. No....this is not begging, this is extortion. Either you pay or you lose your car. The police are a pack of no-good bums.

So, is Nigeria all bad and no good? Not really....considering the natural greenery that God has gifted the Dark Continent. The roads are good. The women are really sturdy. It's very normal for a pregnant lady to deliver on a given day, and resume back to her daily chores with zeal, with the one-day-old infant tied firmly to her back. The men are really very strong and sturdy. I have actually seen just seven people(I counted them) push and move a train(narrow gauge) as it had conked off in the middle of a railway crossing. Unbelievable, isn't it? That may make you wonder what they eat! Well, the staple diet here is beef, rice and yam(sweet potato). The people are really very friendly. When they ask you ''How are my people?'', it means how is YOUR family. Isn't that warm?

But then, all these things do not matter when normal life becomes impossible, do they? The traffic is a mess(traffic jams are called go slows here), the heat is unbearable, the electricity is a joke, the police are clowns and crime is the major occupation!

So, what was my motive in writing this review? Simple, really! This review is a warning for any prospective job seekers who are thinking of taking up a job in this country. And if you are planning to go there with your family, it's a complete no-no! You will only be endangering your family. One of my cousins was in Nigeria. He earned a lot and finally decided to return back to India. Luckily for him, his wife and two daughters left two days before he was supposed to fly. I say luckily because the very next day he was visited by armed robbers. They tied him up and stayed in his house for three days. In this period they collected whatever they could and left. It was my cousin's good fortune that he escaped with a life. But he got it at the cost of his life's earnings.

So, if you are the one who has got that offer with a hefty package from Nigeria.......think again.
