Niagara Falls, a history of 12000 years
Feb 08, 2016 05:11 PM 3264 Views

Few months ago, we had a chance to visit Niagara Falls in USA. It was one of the most wonderful experience we had. It is said Niagara Falls is 12000 years old.

We had joined a conducted group tour. Therefore everything was prearranged for us. We stayed in the hotel Sheraton by Falls, that was a walking distance from the falls. We reached there in the evening and we were immediately taken to see the spectacular view at night.

On one side of the falls is Canada on the other side is America.

There were fireworks at the fall, on the side of Canada, to greet us.:)

Next morning, we were again taken to Niagara Falls State Park. First of all we went to IMax theater at visitors center. There was saw a very interesting documentary on Niagara Falls, giving  facts and history about the falls. It showed how it was always man's dream to walk a tightrope across the falls or to plunge with the Niagara Falls and come out alive.

Then our group boarded Niagara Trolley and we were taken to'Maid of the Mist'. This involved a boat trip to the point, right near the falls and we felt the Niagara Falls water sprinkled on us.

After the boat trip, we went to'Cave of the Winds'. Here was saw mighty power of water fall from a very close distance. We had to hold the railings around, for not falling off and keeping us steady.

Our next stop was at'Aquarium of Niagara'. Here we saw so many species of colorful aquatic animals and coral reefs. We even saw performances by sea lions in the pond.

Last stop was at'Niagara Discovery Center'. Here again we saw a documentary, that I didn't find so interesting.

The entire area is very well connected by Niagara Falls Scenic Trolley. It runs up and down in the entire area, having 6 stops in between. One is free to get on and off, as per one's wishes. It is all included in the Niagara Discovery Pass.

Its a beautiful natural scenic place, full of greenery and the sound of mighty waterfall everywhere you go.

If given a chance, we will like to visit Niagara Falls again!

A breathtaking beauty of nature!

Where: Niagara city on both USA and Canada side

Best time to visit: May to November

Price for the Maid of the Mist Boat Ride:$20(Approx Rs.1000)

The Falls: From the American side you can visit three falls viz. The Bridal Veil Falls, The American Falls and the Horseshoe shaped Niagara Falls. All three are equally mesmerising, but the Horseshoe falls takes the cherry on the cake:)

My Experience: I visited the USA side of Niagara Falls in May last year. I had gone via a tour that made us explore both the Day view as well as the stunning night view. You have to see both to believe it!

The Day view: We accessed the Falls from the Goat Island which is a small projection of land through which you can have a good look at the falls. After which we took a Boat Ride famously called as the Maid of the Mist Boat Ride to the Falls. Tickets were bought prior by our guide. The charges also included a light raincoat, because it you really do go almost under the falls:) Inside the boat and towards the falls, was an Amazing experience. Something that cannot be explained in words. The flowing waters and the playful winds were a perfect combination to make a breathtaking experience! I loved every bit of the ride. Rides take place every 20-30mins, but you need to be quick to get a good place to soak in all of Niagara falls;) Cameras do work till the certain distance after which the mist and water make it difficult. But its best way to see the falls, soak in the natural beauty with your eyes: nature's gifted camera:)

Once we came back from the boat ride, we went for Niagara Caves where you can hear closely the gushing of water. The path is a bit slippery, but safe and guarded well.

Night View: Lights lit up the Falls in stunning colours from the Canadian side. A beautiful view to see.

Also can see the Rainbow bridge which connects the two countries of USA and Canada.

There is a Niagara Park where you can sit and soak in all the beauty of Niagara Falls. Well maintained and neatly kept!

Oh, btw you can say "hi" to the Canadian folks:) from the American side.

There is a play that beautifully describes the folk story of how the Niagara was discovered and named. It also describes about Red Indians, the first settlers.

There is a mall like area near the Niagara Park where you can buy memorabilia and eat. There is also an Indian restaurant:) But I found the place a complete rip off:/

Last Word: A totally MUST VISIT place! Has to be in everybodys bucket-list:)

Niagara Falls is a must visit for any tourist who visits either USA or Canada and it is said the view is better at the Canadian front. Fortunately, during a visit to Toronto, I with my few friends decided to visit this tourist attraction.

We tried to find out the possible options to explore Niagara on a Sunday morning but decided to drive 135 KM through the was a tough winter morning when we decided to drive 135 km to Niagara Falls and planned to return by the evening.

We started at 10:00 am but looked like it was still 04:00 am. It was so cold that it could have killed us. It took us about 30 mins to remove the snow from the car, clear the drive way and warm the car. During those 30 min, I was cursing myself for taking this decision to visit Canada during winters

Canadian roads were good for the season, it took us almost 4 hrs to reach Niagara. The town is very small. Due to such cold conditions there were not much tourist and parking was easily available The temperature was -35oC but the winds were very strong and despite of fully covered I felt as if the winds were cutting through my body.

The place was completely frozen, only a small part of water was visible and that it was freezing during its descend. Part of it also converted to mist and the feeling was really vey good.

There is also a small coffee outlet nearby, to warm ourselves we stayed inside the coffee shop for sometime and soon planned our trip back. On the way, at the USA Canada bridge there is a duty free shop, we thought that we could do shopping there but was told that it was strictly for the people leaving for USA on the same road and none other.

I had the experience which generally most people don’t have, probably I will plan a trip soon during summers to visit the place again.

Visit to Niagara Falls
Jan 13, 2008 03:24 AM 2729 Views

During my visit to my Parent organisation at Cleveland, Ohio my US colleague had driven me to Niagara, 4 hrs from Cleveland each way.

I had visited August, 2007.From Jan-March/April Niagara is closed as everything freezes. On my earlier trip in Jan 07, i had not visited Niagara but had enjoyed temperatures as low as -30 Degree C.

Niagara is a breathtakingly brilliant sight. It was the best trip of my life.Maid of the Mist ride on the water is highly recommened as at one place you totally get lost in the mist.If you have Canadian visa also its good as then you get a much better view from Canadian side. Its a one day trip but anybody going near to New York/Chicago/Cleveland should go there as its the best spot in the world. You can see a lot of Indians there, all software people residing in US.You feel proud seeing the number of Indians there. One day sightseeing costs approx 100$ with food.

I recommend everybody going to US to see Niagara once. Its superb.Any photos needed of my trip let me know.

Memorable trip to Niagara
Sep 11, 2007 07:21 PM 4653 Views

During my stay at Schenectady, NY . I had a chance to take a day trip to *Niagara Falls, before visiting Niagara Falls,  hell lot of thought was going through my mind, how great a just waterfall can be? Its just water falling from the height, After all, it is just water and it is just falling and so on……  Although I hail from near by town of Lonavala and Khandala which is famous for number of scenic waterfalls around, also I have been to Hognekal, Jog Fall and few of Kangra valley waterfalls.

Perhaps experience of Niagara is some thing different, the natures work at its best. It’s fantastic, Amazing and spectacular. I started my journey with one more colleague on one summer weekend on the Americas popular bus service Grey hound, to Buffalo. Distance between Schenectady to Niagara is just 270 miles, 7 hours journey by bus. We reached Buffalo early morning, roamed around for a while, took a next bus to Niagara at 7:00am, a 20 minute drive from Buffalo.

We were so desperate to see the falls, we immediately rushed starting walking towards the sound of gushing water came from and  found ourselves on the lanes of Goat Island. The beauty of *Goat Island *is it splits the course of the Niagara River, resulting in the separation of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls to the west from the American and Bridal Veil Falls to the east.

Once we cross the pedestrian bridge to Goat Island we lost the path and went directly towards American falls, perhaps a mistake happens for good.

We finished watching the American falls taking all kind of posed snaps, we moved towards the Main Platform on American side called *Terrapin Point, * near to the horseshoe falls, by the time we reached there, we were hearing water gushing sound, Gulls flying above and here come the photo shot moment, It was just a amazing moment, a huge rainbow welcomed us, it was starting at the bottom of horseshoe falls and reaching the top of casino tower Bldg on Canadian side, simply superb, Marvelous!!! What to say about the natures beauty, I never experienced this kind of rain bow before, the sight was enchanting.

After spending some time there, we noticed from the top a small ferry  named  “Maid of mist” sailing towards the base of Horse shoe falls, Now I couldn’t resist myself,  I  asked my buddy  “ How about sailing that ferry”? He readily accepted, immediately we rushed to the Niagara state park tourist center, purchased a complete package of Niagara tourism called “Passport to the falls”.

Our first trip of package started with collecting our kit, sandals and raincoat  rather I would say a Yellow ‘mist coat’, after wearing the attire, we queued to visit ‘cave of winds’ thorough the Jet Lift going down at cruising speed, 170 meters down, reached there in few seconds, we rolled towards the platform standing on the rocks, the wooden platform beneath the Picturesque American falls, what a sight? The sight of water so close to us simply lifted up…..  And within seconds people were vying with each other to have a face splash. Dudes watch it!! As if water poured from the thousand gallon big drum , which was scattering after falling to the rocks in front, hitting us with such a force that we were left breathless for a few seconds. I had to retrace my steps, as I had to take care of my Camera.  Amazing!!! This feeling was overwhelming which can’t be expressed just in words u have to be there.

One more prettiest thing around the cave of winds is, it’s also a largest colony of ‘Gulls’ a beautiful flock of birds all over making human like sound as if they wanna talk to u…crazy  watching them. The trip to Cave of winds was mind blowing.

We moved back to the top of Island, we were hungry by now, had a brunch along with the gulls in a open roof restaurant.

Started for over next destination the Observation tower, from the tower again a lift down to Maid of mist boarding point. And to my surprise we found 70% were “Desi” on board.

Maid of the Mist is the ferry ride, which actually takes you through the Niagara Falls, Niagara falls which is comprised of three separate falls Horseshoe fall, American fall and bridal veil fall. Out of them the most spectacular one is the Horse shoe falls also called Canadian fall, which is panoramically huge and mighty. We were again given raincoats to keep us from getting wet. But this time the color was Blue. I felt the water was just sprinkling across, a cool breeze and misty all around it was the best sprinkler you could ever lay your hands upon with the water droplets traveling far and wide once they reach the falls. The tour of ‘Maid of the Mist” was as truly great; I heard even our Late Prime minister Pandit Nehru visited Maid of Mist. Initially it was fine, with the ferry swaying along the waters and we swaying along with the ferry. Then the amazing view of the Horse shoe falls was unveiled. The most common cry that could be heard over the sound of the ferry Engine was WOOVVWW!!!!! It was worth the overnight sleepless trip, worth journey and worth the overall trip.

We painted the beauty of the falls on the digital chip of our camera. As we went more and more close to the falls, the water splashing from the rocks were all on to the boat and the raincoats were pretty useful. But, the most fun part was taking the snaps when the water was falling across your face blinding you for a moment. People were yelling WOVVWe, superb, mind blowing…..We were reluctant to go back not willing to move away from the falls, wanted to feel every drop touching our body and soul.

The picture of Niagara in our minds will stay forever and every time we see any other falls, for sure, at least for a moment, the mighty Niagara will be coming to our minds. I am sure anybody who has been to Niagara would agree to my statement.

After relaxing a bit we visited three sisters Island, Aquarium, the adventure theatre for a movie “Niagara” and then the discovery center. Now it was time to say good bye!!!  To Niagara, back to Niagara city bus stop, at the stop we went for a shopping for the souvenirs  in a dare devil museum.

Next day we were not stopping, talking about Niagara to our roommates.

Canada a must go
Aug 22, 2006 09:39 PM 2418 Views

Going to see Niagara Falls in US would be waste of time and effort if you were not crossing over to Canada. Not that US side has good falls but the real beauty lies across the bridge.

You could go by bus, car or train.

Train has two stops in the end with two Niagara stations – One in US ; the other in Canada.

Typical travel time would be six or seven hour’s hrs if you were traveling from New York or NJ areas.

There are plenty of Hotels in and around the falls both on NY side as well on Canada side. I would prefer staying on Canada side as hotels are better and you have access to Toronto. Advance reservation would be preferable if you want an above average one.

Mostly it is a safe location with plenty of tourists; summers are great time to visit Niagara.

Be careful of the ticketing state troopers if you are buzzing at 90miles/hr as you get close to Buffalo; You don’t want a ticket like the one I got.

NIAGARA FALLS... Nature's Creativity At Best
May 17, 2006 06:49 PM 2301 Views

Hi Everyone,

I had a chance to goto Niagara Falls last year in the month of April (2005), while I was is USA for my studies. I was fascinated by the stories and reviews people have given about Niagara Falls. I had a wish that I will sometime in my life visit Niagara Falls.

At last that day came on 4 April'05, it was a long weekend i.e. holiday on friday.

So I decided to go to Niagara Falls which were around 600 miles from my house in SOMERS,NY. I gathered my three friends from college, and we started early morning around 5 AM. I was driving my FORD MUSTANG. It was a long drive but beautiful. The highways was good and weather was nice. The sun was shining with all its glory.

We took four breaks in our journey and reached niagara falls around 6 pm.

We have booked Mariot Inn for ourselves, and we decided to take a rest before going to falls.

After one hour we went to Falls location. The sound of falling water can be heard at least five miles away. You can easily understand that falls are near by.....what an experience! We reached Falls and parked our car. Since it was 7:30 PM so we were not able to ride ''MAID OF MIST''( The boat service which takes you to centre of falls).

But there were other attractions to enjoy in night. One of them what hot air ballon. It was a ride for $20 per person, and they take you to a height of 500 feet up in air.

You cannot believe how beautiful it is to see the world from top. I can see both Canada and USA sides. There was no place for darkness, and lights every where. The ballon was swinging in air, and I was a bit horrified as I fear heights. But the excitement overtook my fear and I enjoyed a lot. When we came down, I went to an Indian restaurant near by to have dinner. Then we decided to leave for hotel. In our hotel we decided to take a swim in the pool.

We all four went to pool and started swimming and playing with ball. It was another experience which I remember even today. After two hours of fun we came to bed and slept. Next morning we left our hotel around 7 am and went to see falls.

Our first stop was '' MAID OF MIST'' , we took tickets and went to observatory deck. From there you have to take a lift to reach down to dock. When we got out off lift, people provided us with a raincoat kind of thing, because water is fallng from such a height that mist is formed around it. This is the reason why this boat service is called ''MAID OF MIST''.

We boarded the boat and slowly started moving towards centre of fall. After sometime we saw the falls from front. They are mighty, big, and AWESOME. The sound of falling water was horrifying. The captain of boat was explaining everything to us. We moved further near to falls, and I can see water gushing out from below, just as if it was boiling. I was thinking whether boat will stop or not, or captain has forgotten to stop boat. But atlast he stopped and turned back. We were all wet despite of the raincoat. We took some snaps in the boat.

After coming back from boat, we all went to ''CAVE OF WINDS''. It is located on ''Goat Island'', which a small patch of land separating two branches of fall. The ''Cave of Wind'' is a small cave in the rock, and it has an opening at the back of falls. So because of falling water, air is rushed through this cave and it makes a terrible sound. But yet another great experience.

After finishing from there, we did small shopping to buy memorials from there. We started our journey back to Somers around 1 PM and reached home late night.

My overall experience was fantastic and we faced no problem except one. I was ticketed for driving fast. But what can I do? Can you drive a FORD MUSTANG slowly..........No and so I have no regrets for that ticket.

I will advice everyone to visit these falls once definitely and you will thank me for the advice.

Take care

The spectacular Niagara Falls
Jan 13, 2006 05:55 PM 3023 Views

All my travels to the US has been for official work. How I spent my time there depends on the company I have form the local office! On one of the visits, I was staying in Lebanon, in the state of New Hampshire. We were a group of 5 from the Indian office. It was the month of September and we were wondering what to do over the weekend and then pop came the idea why not drive down to Niagara Falls?

Preparation: The Niagara is about 450 miles from NH. So we had to travel a total of 900 miles, that is about 9 hours each way. Driving in the US is not a nightmare as it is in India. We first downloaded and printed the route from Lebanon to Niagara falls. Yes, you can do it and you have all the information in detail. (For those who are visiting US for the first time, go to https://maps.yahoo.com/, Click on Driving Directions. We entered the starting location and the destination point and we got the required instructions in https://maps.yahoo.com/dd_result?newaddr=&taddr=&csz=Lebanon%2C+NH&country=us&tc
sz=Niagara+falls&tcountry=us) Next, we checked for cheap accommodations. It is better to call and book for rooms or beds if it is a over night travel. We decided to stay at a bed and breakfast and fortunately got rooms without any problem. Now there was just time to have dinner, pack and catch some sleep before we left for Niagara. We left for Niagara in morning at 5.30 a.m. We took a just 2 stops of 15 minutes each in between and reached there at 2.30 pm in the afternoon. We had booked rooms at a bed and breakfast close to the falls! So we first went there, kept our things and walked down about 15 minutes to the greatest falls!

My first impression: I don’t know how to express my first reaction on seeing the falls. It is just wonderful, spectacular, awesome, gigantic, and gorgeous. I tried to capture it in the lens, but you need to see the fall, hear the sound, and have the experience to know what it really is! The river into which the Niagara falls separates the U.S. and Canada. We saw the falls only from the US side. It is said that the view from the Canadian side is said to be more spectacular. We could not go to there because we did not have the visa. Imagine being just a bridge away, we could see Canada on the other side of the river, but could not go across due to lack of a visa!

The maid of the mist: It is the Canadian part of the falls. We took a ferry that takes people near it, almost to the foot of it. The ferry ride costs $10, but it worth the cost! The part of the Canadian fall is in the shape of a horseshoe and constitutes about 80% of the waterfall. We were taken to the basin of the magnificent

Horseshoe Falls. The boat stops at the base of Horseshoe falls for a few minutes and gives us enough time to admire the mighty falls plunging down with full power. Every body is given a transparent, blue plastic raincoat to protect ourselves from the spray of the massive fall. You have a spectacular view from these places. I stood in the ferry and looked around at the three parts, which makes the Niagara Falls. It is a wonderful and inspiring sight. The memories of this experience is going to be with me for the rest of my life. I still have my blue plastic raincoat---as a souvenir.

Surprise: When we were returning from the ferry ride, I was standing at the railing of the upper deck and I thought I saw someone I know--waiting for the ride. It was my cousin from India, whom I had not met for 5 years. She had come to St. Louise on an assignment. She had come to see the Niagara falls with her friends and was waiting to get into the ferry. It was another incident that added some spice to the visit to Niagara!

Caves of the wind: After the ferry ride, we went walking to see the falls from all possible angles. We decided to check out the caves of the wind, a trip that takes you closer to the waters of American Falls than you might think is possible. An elevator through the hill/cliff takes people to the foot of the fall, 60 feet down into the Niagara gorge. Imagine going down a lift which is inside the hill/cliff. Here we had to wear a proper bright yellow raincoat and special shoes they provide. as you come of the list you can walk on some wooden planks/steps. The guide takes you to close to foot of the water falls, to a platform called the

Hurricane Deck. If you stand there, you can feel the strong sprays of the water. It is not exactly under the waterfall. From here you get a spectacular view of torrents of the bridal veil falls. It was some experience! What is more endearing is that the Hurricane Deck is especially designed for handicapped and adults carrying children in arms.

Illuminated Niagara:After a couple of hours, we left the falls to have dinner. Then went back to the Niagara to see the lighting. The entire area on both sides is light up in different colors. The colorful falls looks absolutely gorgeous. You can spend hours sitting there gazing at the spectacular falls. After a while one of the guys started yawning....and we decided to go back for a sleep after promising each other that we would come back there the next morning on our way back home....and we did that!
