A sweet journey of Muscat
Jan 16, 2018 09:52 AM2105 Views

I was selected by of one of the premier Omani company to work for them in Muscat. They have sent all my Visa documents and other travel related documents well in advance. Finally, my waiting period was over and I have to leave India tomorrow morning at 7.30 from Indira Gandhi International Airport T3.

I have been awakened early morning 4 am and prepared for visiting Airport Terminal 3, Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi. I remembered the flight time of Oman Airways was 7.30 am and I was at home still at 5 am and the travel time from home to the airport will take 1 hour time, so quickly somehow I have arranged Ola car and started to reach airport as early as possible as at airport I have to spend at least 1.30 hours for Visa and other process. Ok, I have said to Ola driver for fast driving so that I can reach before time but suddenly one of car tyre got punctured. I thought I cannot reach airport on time and flight may missed. Ok, somehow driver was quickly changed his car Tyre and speeding his car at a speed of 100 to 150 km/hour towards airport and just 1 hour before he dropped me at airport. Quickly I have taken my luggage at checking point and after that I was moved towards Oman Airways counter for checking the tickets and visa process.

So after all initial process have completed then I moved towards waiting area where many passengers have relaxed and awaiting their flight schedule. So I just sat front of Oman airways area and start watching time schedule of flights. But fortunately flight was on time and I have more time to wait to board the flight. So I thought I have much time and want to spend this time near about multi stores so I was move towards that place. I was started moving here and there and on the meantime I was forgot the scheduled time of flight and was still moving at one store to another.

Suddenly, there was a final announcement of Oman Airways for boarding the flight and I suddenly I was noticed that the announcement was for my flight. I was quickly running towards my flight area but in mid-way one of the Oman Airways lady boarding staff running towards me by carrying passenger list. She stopped me and asked me first my name then I was explained her everything my detail and she started shouting on me for lodge the bus which was already awaiting for final boarding. Ok, I was running too fast towards bus to catch flight and this bus was last bus for that particular flight. I was surprised on that bus I was the only passenger going towards flight.

So speedily bus was running towards flight and in few minutes the bas was stopped near flight where of one flight executive asked me for ticket and other documents then directed me to lodge the flight quickly as flight had already been started to run at the runway. I show my ticket to air staff and she requested me to sit at the designated sea allotted to me near window. I was full of sweetening and my heart was beating badly and my inner clothes also was wetted.

Finally, flight took up. I was relaxed and seeing through windows outside sky. After two and half hours journey, I was flying above the Muscat airport and waiting for landing at airport. Finally my flight was landed and I moved towards documents checking points and luggage checking points and then reached the place where one of my representative was awaiting for me at outside of Airport. So just I was coordinated with him for his location where I was awaiting for me. Finally he came and how his identity which was already give me at India and I was assured that I was met the right person.

I was surprised the outside temperature of Oman was 50 deg cent. So that gay was instructed me to cover up the face as heat may cause skin burn so I carefully cover my head and face by towel so that I can feel relaxed. My CAB started playing towards my destination which will be taken at least 45 minutes to reach.

I still remembered that journey today as I have struggled that time from beginning to end of my journey. I thought I should share this wonderful experience among all.

Muscat, Oman's port capital, sits on the Gulf of Oman surrounded by mountains and deserts. With history dating back to antiquity, it mixes high-rises and upscale shopping malls with clifftop landmarks such as the 16th-century Portuguese forts, Al Jalali and Mirani, looming over Muscat Harbor. Its modern, marble-clad Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, with 50m dome and prodigious Persian carpet, can accommodate 20, 000 people.

This is the best place for who love to do Trekking, Riding, Fishing, Boating, Surfing, Kayaking.

And about the people here in Muscat, they are very polite and gentle to everyone especially for tourist.

The best places to visit in Muscat, Oman are Yiti Beach, Al sifah beach, Nakal Damn, Jebal shams.

Yiti Beach: This beach is one of the cleanest beach, I have ever seen. If you visit there you will find very few people and you can also do barbecue with your family and friend.

Al sifah Beach: This beach is very peaceful, this beach is especially for those who love beach fishing.

Nakal Damn: This place is simply awesome, you will find there one damn with so much of noise and beauty.

Jebal Shams: I cannot explain in words about this place, this place is heaven for trekking lovers and this place has a top pest point of Oman.

Please visit and feel the beauty of it.

Peaceful city.

My friend lives in muscat so every now and then I keep visiting muscat.

If one is peace loving and wants to lead a good, peaceful life he should settle here. This place gives a feel of india, It has hills like india. But the roads they have built around the hills is just unbelievable. The local people also speak in hindi which becomes very easy for moms to go around.  The only issue this country has that the taxis are not run my any indian or other nationality  except the locals, which becomes a little unsafe for Indian girls. It also has very nice beaches too.

Sighseeing wise there are too many options.

One time visit is a must.

And yes they have a largest mosque also which is a big must to visit.

Loving city

Endless shoreline
Aug 09, 2006 03:37 PM10635 Views

Beaches, more beaches and still more beaches....that's what Oman is all about. It has a beautiful shoreline that you can enjoy anytime of the day, provided you go there in winters (November to Ferbruary). Mornings and evenings are cool but afternoons can get really hot, even in winters. If you are really lucky, you will be able to catch Omani beach in a full moon night. it is simply awesome. During winters, the planktons are thrown on the shore with each wave and the receding waves leave a line of eerie light on the moonlit beach! It is exquisite. The other ethereal experience of Oman is it's desert camping. Take a trip during eid holidays and on the new moon night, after the moon sets you can sit under the dome shaped sky and watch trillions of stars! There is no other light for miles around you. As you sit in a tent, you can hear nothing either. It is just a moonlit night in cold desert. But these trips are very safe. Make sure to book with a camping company. There are many in Muscat.

People of course, love shopping in Muscat. There are more malls in Muscat than anywhere else in the world I feel. Some of my favourites are City Centre, Al Araimi, ...actually drive to qurum or towards seeb and you can see all of them one after the other, especially if you are carrying a lot of pocket money. Check out Lulu for cheaper but good stuff. Do visit Ruwi high street for gold shopping and don't miss the 123rial shops. You get everything here from CHINA! Another not to miss section is the Mutrah souk. The local market is flooded with Chinese and Indian goods but you also find the right frankinscence here.

If you plan your trip well you can also visit Salalah and Dhofar regions of the country which are greener and verdant.

Omani cuisine is not very exciting for Indians but do check out breads from egyptian bakers, shwarma, date halwa and sweets and some kebabs mostly done by pakistanis.

Oman is a safe place but don't take local taxis alone...there have been unpleasant incidents. Women should never travel alone and avoid wearing western clothes. Pants are fine but avoid body hugging fits.

Toursists hot favourite

After leaving my job in Mumbai now I am settled her with my hubby in Muscat ( Capital of Sultanate of Oman ) which is such a cool place contrast to Mumbai’s busy schedule. Sitting here at home gives us ample time to pursue our hobbies and visit beautiful beaches, sultan’s palaces and different picnic spots which brings us close to nature which otherwise seems to be a dream while in Mumbai.

Weekend get together with friends in park, swimming & building sand castles with kids on clean beaches, traveling across huge roundabout , being to exhibition centers, visiting Hindu temples amongst the Omani’s and having strolls in huge super and hyper markets. I am describing for u all readers this time of one such a location..

Khassab, one of the most beautiful cities in the Sultanate, is evolving as a popular tourist destination. From scuba diving and dhow cruise to historic places, this place has it all…

Located in the farthest north of the Governorate of Musandam, it lies between, Dibba and Bukha wilayats. It overlooks the Gulf of Oman in the east and the Arabian Sea in the north-west and is very close to the Straits of Hormuz.

As a result, the place is proving a heaven for sea surfers and divers. Dhow cruises along its winding fjord-like coastline are other popular activity with the tourists here. The place also offers trekking and mountains safaris. Those interested in wadi bashing can head towards Al Rouda abd Al Khalidiya, in addition to Wadi Khan, Masifah, Hiyut and Khur Najd. The place also boasts of castle, forts and towers. The castle of Khassab is one of the prominent ones. It dates back to the beginning of the Al Busaid dynasty.. it was renovated in 1990’s by the Ministy of National Heritage and Culture.

The three towers , Al Siba, Kabas Al Wasr and the tower of Said Bin Ahmad Bin Sulaiman Al Malik, bear testimony to a glorious past. The latter two towers are now in ruins. The place also takes pride in its old mosques including Al Siba also called as “the western mosque” was restored in 1980 also Al Suq and Al Kamazara are restored recently.

The very name Khassab means fertility in Arab, aptly describes the place with fertile land. the tourists explore the varied natural beauty and also get first hand experience of its rich culture and heritage. Some prominent schools such as Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zaakariay, Al Kamali, Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saleh Bin Mahmoud were from this place. A must to see place.

Hope u enjoyed this piece let me know ur comments.

Heaven On Earth... Why? You will soon realise.

The Governate of Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.

His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

For me, Muscat was not just another tourist destination. It was my HOME for almost Seven years. I spent all my youth in a country that is known the world over for it's peace and calm, cleanliness and serenity.

I know whole of Oman inside out, so I think I am worthy of writing a review on this heaven of a place.

Oman is very deep in tradition. Sultan Qaboos the current Sultan of Oman, had imprisoned his father and taken over the throne on 26th November 1970. This is celebrated as the Renaissance Day in Oman. Lucky for me I saw Seven such celebrations. Oman as a whole stretches from North East to South West to more than around 1500 kms. This is also around the Distance from Muscat to Salalah [the hill station of Oman as we call it]. Oman has many local nationalities from different races:

  1. Arab Bedouin [Badou]

  2. Baluchi's from Baluchistan, Pakistan

  3. Zanzibari [from Zanzibar, Africa]

  4. The Badou's were original arabs who roamed the deserts in Oman many years ago. They are still considered the original nationals of Oman.

  5. The Baluchi's landed in Oman more than 100 years ago when the then rulers had employed these fierce fighters to fight wars for them. Later they were offered national status in Oman for their commitment to the country. Be careful of this BREED. They are pukka cons.

  6. The Zanzibari's are originally from Zanzibar [a small island on the East coast of Africa, in the Indian Ocean]. The Sultan's family is also from Zanzibar. Oman was controlled by Sultan Qaboos' grandfather from Zanzibar. But later they shifted to Oman and made Muscat their capital.

Oman was originally called Muscat wa' Oman [Muscat and Oman]

Muscat is the capital of Oman. As soon as you get down at the Seeb International Airport at Muscat, you will be greeted by the local Baluchi and Badou [Bedouin-Arab] taxi drivers. They all know Hindi, Urdu, Arabic, English and some speak Malayam and Tamil too !! Though not very fluently. When you come out of the airport area, you will be amazed by the cleanliness of the streets. It is one of the cleanest cities in the World, just after Singapore.

As soon as you pass from Seeb area and go towards the town area, you will find Ghala. Ghala is where I worked and lived for all the time. Ghala is a HUGE industrial estate covering an almost 5kms radius. Here you will find all the bangali, punjabi, gujrati, tamil, malayali and pakistani bhai log all eating together and dancing together. In Ghala we have a small HOLIDAY INN hotel. It is cheap and best to stay in. Ghala is no place for families to roam in. It is a bit crime prone too, though compared to INDIA, as good as nil. In Ghala, we also have Sultan Qaboos Hospital, where I was a regular. All the nurses there know me well. hehe!!

Further from Ghala is Al Khuwair. Al Khuwair, is a little better locality where you will find some high rise buildings. High rise means... a 5-7 Storey. I was a resident for a month in one of the tallest buildings there ''ICE SKATING RINK Building''. Very famous cause Sneha Ullal was a member of Ice Skating once. Ask any Indian about Al Khuwair and he will start directing you from Ghasitaram restaurant in Al Khuwair. All Indian bachelors and families come there for their daily meals. Omanis just take parcels and zip off. But you wont believe it. You still get a Punjabi UNLIMITED Thali there for just 0.700 baiza [80-85 Rupees]. Just next to it is a Gujju joint ''SOHA Restaurant''. There too you will get the same thali for 0.650 Baiza. They both have tough competition. It never stops really. Just opposite these Indian joints on the other side of the road is Ministry Street. Ministry of Electricity & Water [MEW], Director General of Project Management [DGPM] and many more. All white and chocolate brown in color. Dont be surprised all government buildings in Oman are choco color. Even some hospitals.

Then there is Qurum and Qurum Beach Road [Jawahrat Al Shatti]. Qurum is the posh area of Muscat. Like Pali hill is in Bombay. Dont even think of peeking in the villas here. You will faint, if you are visiting a Gulf country for the first time. Everything is Gold plated there. From Main Gate to Door Knob, From Tiles to Chandeliers, From WC's to Wash Basin taps. Here only the ministers and big VVIP's stay. The entire stretch is monitored by Live CCTV cameras. So Be Careful!! Along the Qurum Beach Road though it is more lively and beautiful. Both for the eyes and soul. There is about a km stretch of road that gets hijacked by youngsters in Porsche's, Mercs and BMW's and the footpaths are occupied by joggers and walkers. The beach is taken over by families on rugs with barbecues lighting all along the beach. This place is best visited on Thursday and Friday night only.

Further ahead towards town is Wattayah. My frequent hangout point. WHY?? Cause it houses all the car showrooms. From Daihatsu to Toyota to BMW to Ford to Volkswagen to Suzuki, you name it and you find it. I used to spend at least an hour gazing at every showroom. All the showrooms are in a single row, except for HONDA which is on the other side of the road, standing alone. hehe!!

Now comes the town, Ruwi and Muttrah. Ruwi is an Indian shopper's paradise. Clothes from 1-5 rials and electronics from 5-20 rials. So if you have just a 50000 INR ka budget, you can visit Ruwi and find all the chor bazar ka maal here.

Then there is Muscat city where you can find the Sultan's Palace. This palace is worth seeing if you visit Muscat.

This is all I can write about. Happy Muscat-ing.

Changing face of Muscat
Nov 16, 2004 04:48 PM10214 Views

Muscat has been my place of residence over six years from 92-97. After coming back to Dubai in 02, I had an opportunity to visit Muscat twice. This gave me chance to see changing face of Muscat in last 6 years.

Most noticeable difference is at the border of Oman and UAE. Immigration post is now housed in new building with stained glass interiors, granite tiles, and water fountain in the middle. First impression of the country is often formed by Immigration and Customs.

Oman made sure that even visitors by road get their first glimpse of this orderly country. Earlier, border post was crowded by Oman residents who were keen to flee to Dubai for shopping. It is heartening to see the opposite.

Road from border post to Muscat city is a dual carriage expressway without any major deviations. The road is in as much immaculate condition as it was. This area is known as Batinah coast and is most prosperous and populous part of Oman The road is lined up with farmhouses on both sides and if one were to take interiors of midway small towns, one could easily be camouflaged being in Konkan area. One can easily drive in excess of 160Km/hr if one can overcome the risk by getting caught by hidden speed radars.

Muscat is the cleanest city I have even seen so far and this is not just true with downtown but even remotest alley of the city. Oman seems eager to tap the tourist potential which she richly deserves and this is reflected in the way city is geared to handle the tourists. New hotels have spruced up ? Grand Hyatt, Ramada, Holiday Inn with many beach resorts along the beach that now extends from Qurum to Intercontinental Muscat hotel. Winding road leading to Qantab beach used to be ?sought after place? for visitors to be with rocky mountains along the azure sea.

Now this road is further extended and takes visitors right on edge of mountain cliff facing serene gulf of Oman on all three sides. New hotel project is underway and once this gets completed, perhaps Al Bustan palace - crown of Muscat appear pale in comparison. However, with Motor boats ? tranquility of the Qantab beach has been lost.

Old malls like CCC ? Prisunic seem to have been deserted with arrival of Lulu and Carrefour. Most of trees lined along the expressway have now grown to make an impression of boulevard. Most of round-abouts are revamped with concrete structure giving away to more natural looks.

With expansion of commercial activities on both sides of expressway, green/maroon overboard bridges do come as a rescue to pedestrians but spoil otherwise natural surroundings. Qurum is no longer central point with vanishing outlets of Al Fair, Baby Shop, and Pizza In. This has given way to banks and smaller shops.

Some things have not changed? like Krishna Temple in Ruwi, Old Corniche, and Central Business District. Muscat has always been spectacular place with its meticulous cleanliness, well-manicured landscapes amidst backdrop of Rocky Mountains and friendly people.

The place is now even friendlier. Once Khushwant Singh had commented ? ?See Muscat before you die.? I agree with him ? anyone who visits Dubai, must add Oman to their travel. Two days are more than enough to see this jewel of gulf.

I am pleased to know that you have selected Muscat as destination.

Muscat ,is no doubt the PARIS OF GULF, but you have selected your visit in mid-summer which is quite like a chicken wanting to be roasted in copper-oven.

If you are aware Wadi-Kabir and Ruwi are aisles in between copper mountains, which are not visible because beautiful building have been built upon them.

No doubt if you want visit sohar or sur in north which have lot of greener-strips along-side highways.

You would long for water ponds to take a dip in them.

Do not miss the chance to cool your body and re-heat with RATAAB (fresh dates from tree). If you love Camel Milk do not shy away.

Very Best Regards & Bon Voyage

My Trip to Muscat
Mar 11, 2002 05:05 PM6215 Views

Muscat is a beautiful place but this place is good to travel between October to March otherwise it is very hot you will not able to go out at all. Even for shopping in the evening it is not worth it. This place is best in January and February. You will just love it. I had been in Jan-Feb 1996. The next trip I was in 1999 in the month of April-May Oof very hot. I was in indoors most of the time I return to Bombay within 10 days.

The beaches are very clean and the water crystal clear. If you stand in the sea water you can easily see your feet clearly in the water.

The Forts are also excellent.

The Drive from the Airport to Ruwi is just beautiful with the road lined with good greenery and flowers pots.

Even the shopping Malls are beautiful, especially the SABCO

and the SULTAN CENTRE

Muscat, the paradise in Arabian Peninsula
Feb 25, 2002 11:30 AM6903 Views

Muscat is the capital city of Oman (Sultanate of Oman). Although smaller compared to Abudhabi, Dubai, Riyadh, Kuwait and Manama (Bahrain), it is the best city in the whole gulf area where you have real peace and safety. The people are very honest, sober and treat their visitors the best compared to any other city in the Gulf Region. This is the only Islamic country, where you have Hindu Temples, Gurudwara, Churches along side beautiful Mosques all around. You have absolute freedom to discuss and practise religion inside the compound of your worship place but without ofcourse generating any noise pollution. With the present ruler [Sultan Qaboos]taking rein of the country on 23rd July 1970, the country [ including the capital city] has undergone a tremendous change from virtually nothing to one of the most modern country of the world. Oman has more population [excluding Saudi Arabia], than other gulf countries and less petroleum resources, but the dynamic leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos and proper planning has up lifted the city / country to unbelievable great heights.

Muscat has air links from all important cities of the world and direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Trivandrum of India.

Muscat, the capital of Oman, is divided into three quite distinctive regions; the old town, Mutrah and Ruwi. The old town's boundaries are marked by gated walls, enclosing the area around the port, the Sultan's palace and the harbour. Mutrah is the residential area, boasting an excellent souk (market) and Ruwi is the modern business centre. The city has now expanded beyond Airport area which is about 30 km from Ruwi. A must, while here is to experience the sunset under the light sea breeze on one of the excellent beaches. Despite its location, modern Muscat appears to be a long way from the desert on which it stands

Speak of modern amenities and comfort it is all there. When I first landed at Muscat on the 28th of Dec 1975, it was all barren with sand dunes all round. A narrow main road, only 500 telephone lines working, electricity not in all places, no municipal drinking water, and absolutely hot weather with humidity touching up to 95%. Even December / January months were hot needing air conditioner to be run through out the day. Now with lot of trees planted all around, it looks better than even Bangalore, the garden city of India and weather from October until March end is excellent, where one can manage with a fan or even no fan during Dec / Jan. During May to September, however it is hot and humid, but manageable with A/C.

Muscat has beautiful natural and amusement parks, modern museums, old heritage museums, grand hotels, beautiful Omani forts, palaces and other land marks. The other towns in northern Oman such as Sohar, Nizwa, Sur are excellent week-end destinations within few hours of drive away.

Imagine that I have been here for more than 26 years and love to be here till my service is required here by my company Omantel.

Please come here on a visit to realise it is not the form of government [ democracy, autocracy, kingdom etc.] that matters but the spirit of dedication and good rule that takes the country to great heights. Public here like their Sultan the most, for his great leadership, kindness and the neutrality in foreign policy.

About Muscat...all i know is...........
Feb 22, 2002 08:02 PM5926 Views

Oman is a surprisingly green country, particularly in Dhofar, due to its location on the monsoon paths. Landscaping and beautification are priorities of the Municipalities, and gardens, parks and grassy knolls line the main highway. The countryside is varied, from rugged mountain ranges to desert sands, to green, lush wadis (riverbeds). The climate in Muscat is markedly different to that in Dhofar: during the winter, Muscat enjoys temperatures of, average, 300C, dropping to around 180 C at night. However, in the summer, Muscat bakes in 45-480 C, while Dhofar cools down in the light monsoon rain

The capital of Oman is Muscat, a cosmopolitan, but relaxed city, free from the hustle and bustle found in many of Arabia's other capital cities. In the south of the Sultanate, is Salalah, the administrative capital of the Dhofar region.

as a visitor you should VERY IMPORTANTLY REMEMBER THAT that eating, drinking and smoking is not allowed in public at this time

Hi

it is nice to know that u r planning a trip to Muscat, Sultanate of Oman..

What is written here is not any advice, but just a few points for you to ponder ...

For people of united arab emirates, muscat is a little different place, as its topography is generally different from dubai or abu dhabi or sharjah...etc as these three places are on planes...where as muscat is part of a mountain and its valley...so it looks different and sure u will enjoy ...

the city is now as good as any in the middle east and you get almost any thing that u want though u may have less of choice comparing dubai.

the people are good, laguage is arabic and hindi/urdu and most of the indian languages,u almost get all the tv channels that u have in india...in a way it is almost like india away from india...with out the pollution, politics that is in india and many such negatives that is making india what it is today...

However, when u say u r planning to go in summer, I wonder which period of the year u r planning...if u r travelling during the july / october period, then it cld be a wrong time for a holiday at it will be very high dry temperature for u to experience...if it is march april period, then it is o.k. as this is the change over time...

and since u r in muscat dont miss the opportunity to visit salallah which will remind u of kerala or goa in india..

all the best
