Mughal-E-Azam, this name makes me proud to be Indian. I am living in that country where Mughal-E-Azam has been made.

Prithwiraj Kappor was in believable. Dilip Sahab, Madhubala, Durga Khote. Everything in this film is just Amazing.

The story of this film is taken from the medieval history of India. A better story of Akabar and his son's contradiction over Anarkali.

A three and half hour film can bind us till last minute.

Music of Naushad Sahab is greatest. Specially the song "Prem Jogan Ban Ke" I loved most. Nothing can be more romantic than this.

I have seen this movie at least 15 times and till now when ever I get chance I watch this.

A few motion pictures are intended to be seen for the script, some for the exhibitions, some for the creation values, some for the music and still some for the director? s capacity to rise above all latency and present a fantasy; however there are some which rise above all breaking points and turn into a benchmark for the progressive eras of movie producers.

One of these is Mughal-E-Azam, a spectacle which is a contextual investigation for each one of those slanted to trust that filmmaking is about camera points and extravagant outfits, about cinematography and 50 crore spending plans. A motion picture that says a lot about the steadiness and devotion of one man to a fantasy that remained constant inspite of serious misfortunes, Mughal-E-Azam is an entire full lunch, a luxurious dining experience for the eyes and an epic in movement. I would not do equity to the motion picture on the off chance that I don't call it a watershed ever.

Mughal-E-Azam portrays the account of an Emperor Akbar ( Prithviraj Kapoor) got between his adoration for his obligation as a sovereign and his affection for his child and the situation he ends up in when these two proceed onward a course bound to put them on loggerheads with each other. On another level, Mughal-E-Azam is additionally the narrative of two star-crossed beaus ( Salim and Anarkali) got in the whirlpool of nationalistic and social standards that are yet a premonition of the impending fate in their adoration story. To the credit of the film, both stories proceed onward parallel tracks and still keep up their innovation and supplement each other like multi-layered layers of the same hull. Prithviraj Kapoor is just splendid in his execution as Emperor Akbar. The blasting voice, the towering identity and the exceptional anguish in his eyes say a lot

Mughal-e-Azam - Movie Review
Jan 18, 2013 01:18 PM 2597 Views

The Hindi movie ‘Mughal-e-Azam’, the classic romantic sage of K. Asif, was released in August 1960 and re-released in color print in November 2004. The film was produced by Kamal Amrohi, Aman and Shahpoorji Pallonji. The enchanting, everlasting music is by Naushad. The strong star cast included Prithviraj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Madhubala and Durga Khote.

It is an epic period drama about the Mughal emperor, Akbar, the Great and his relationship with his son, while ruling India as its emperor. The film is the eternal love story of Prince Salim with a courtesan, Anarkali. Prince Salim is born to King Akbar and his wife, Jodhabai after many prayers and rituals. As a child he becomes weak and a spoilt brat. So his father sends him to war to learn discipline and courage. After 14 years, the young and handsome Prince returns home spreading love and happiness in the empire. Prince Salim is greeted by the dance performance of Anarkali, a gorgeous court-dancer. The Prince falls in love with her and so does Anarkali but the latter does not reciprocate her love because she is a servant of the court. Soon their love blossoms into immense heights and becomes known to all. The King is against Salim’s desire to marry Anarkali. The dispute between a father and his son grows to an extent of a war between them, because of Anarkali. Salim is sentenced to death after he looses the battle against his father. Salim is hurt when Anarkali is forced to act as a deceiver to him (by the King). She spends a night in Salim’s arms as India’s queen but drugs him to sleep. Salim hates her.

The King revokes Salim’s death sentence on the term of Anarkali death. Anarkali is in chains on betraying Salim and is to be killed. When Salim was born, Anarkali’s mother (Queen’s maid) broke the good news to the King. He gave her a ring and promised to fulfill any one wish of hers whenever she desires. When Anarkali is to be entombed alive, her mother goes to the King with the ring and requests him to grant life to her daughter. Anarkali is declared dead to the world but in reality she lives, thanks to the King’s promise and his greatness. Akbar, the Great was a king more than a father, henceforth he could not accept his son’s love story. This was the reason he fought his son and became his enemy. But he has a heart and was a man of his words, so he spares the life of Anarkali.

The work on this film started in 1944 when K. Asif read a play on the Mughal ruler, Akbar, the Great. The film production was halted due to communal tensions and financial bankruptcy. In 1951 or 1953, when the film lost a major financer, the cast of the movie was changed completely. The film was K. Asif’s life’s main work, which became the most costly production in the history of Indian Cinema. The film budget was 1.5 crores in 1960’s and the box office returns were 5.5 crores. The returns became a record in the financial history of Indian Cinema. There were riots outside booking counters to buy tickets. The film was a mage block buster of its times. Such was the demand of the film that it was re-released in color print in 2004. The theatres were crowded with viewers to see the film in color. Its charisma was not lost and people loved watching it even after 4 decades.

The film won the National Film Award and 3 popular Filmfare awards for the year. The film is an example of K. Asif’s devotional work as well as the great love story which created history during Mughal rule in India. The intense love between the two is beautifully portrayed and well acted by all actors. The money and the hard work which K. Asif spent on the film creation came out very well and was an amazing success.

One of the Greatest Timeless Classics..

What can one say about mughal e azam?

That it is an epic of indian cinema...

That it broke all box office records in the history of indian cinema...

That it is one of the most lavish film to have ever been made in india...

That it took over 12 years to complete...

That it is one of the grandest, biggest and the greatest film ever made in the history of indian cinema....

That it was one of the most expensive films ever made in indian history...

That the sound track of the film composed by naushad has been rated as the second best soundtrack ever...

That it is the first full feature-length movie to be revived in color and re-released, in the history of world cinema.

The colour-revised version of "mughal-e-azam" is a path-breaking and far-reaching experiment with creative continuation. To transform the skin tones and ambiance in the fabulous original and indelible black-and-white into glimmering colour is a task that boggles the mind. Most of what has been colour-revised is done with extreme aesthetic care. A work of art is the only phrase to describe this historical , whose grand palaces-and-fountains look has an epic sweep and whose heart-wrenching core of romance has moved audience for decades.

Mughal e azam is the kind of historical film that is made once in a life time..this magnum opus was released in 1960 after nearly 12 years in the making. it went on to become the biggest box office successes in the history of indian cinema and probably one of the most well known films ever. Not surprisingly, mughal-e-azam has become a must-see classic for all hindi film viewers. The film boasts of a cache of riches, exquisite high drama, powerful performances, magnificent music and at the centre of it all , the other worldly beauty of madhubala, the venus of hindi cinema...

K. Asif, the director was a possessed man until he completed the film aftet 12 long years...he was a perfectionist to the core, never wanting to compromise on details.....he waited patiently for 2 years before he could get the permission to shoot the court scenes in the palace hall of jodhpur rather than shoot it in a studio set.

Story

Set in the 16th century ad , while the mughals ruled india, it is a tale of the doomed love affair between prince salim(dilip kumar), son of emperor akbar(pritviraj kapoor) and anarkali (madhubala) the beautiful, ill fated court dancer....the intensity of this affair perpetrates a war between the prince and his father. Akbar was a fair and just ruler .he wanted the Hindus and the Muslims to live in harmony.he married a jodhpur kshatriya Hindu princess jodhabhai(durga khote).their son was salim.

Akbar placed consideration for his kingdom before parental love. Salim being the crown prince was trained in warfare and kept away from home until he grew up to be an adult.on his return to the palace as a strapping warrior, he meets the beautiful anarkali, a lowly courtesan...they both fall in love and salim wants to marry her much against the wishes of his father, who has already selected a girl bahar(nigar sultana) of royal heritage for him, bahar has been eyeing the power and wealth that she inherits on marrying the prince. When bahar learns about the passionate romance that is brewing between the prince and anarkali, she wastes no time in informing the king and queen.queen jodhabhai tries to reason out with salim but fails.

A furious akbar imprisons anarkali .salim however comes to know about this and helps her escape.anarkali professes her love for salim in the open court and challenges akbar "pyar kiya toh darna kya (love is beyond fear, why should one hide it?).an infuriated akbar wants to get rid of anarkali , but the lovers elope to a distant place along with a friend who helps them out..

Boss my almost fully written review got lost when by mistake I pressed the link..

so here I m , not to give expert comment on this Epic stroy, just to share my feelings that rises up fill me up with same thrill whenever I see it...

now that they have made it colored, earlier my mind was preoccupied against it.

but after seeing the colored version in Forum mall, bangalore, when it was released like a new film.

i felt the dignity and Aura of the film is not at all disturbed by changing the color.

in fact it adds beauty and dimension to cinematography otherwise the painstakingly detailed sets and background could have never sought our attention...

Great work of Technology in reviving this Age old Classic..

about the story, it was said that 20 % may be from history,

rest 80 % was dramatization of the story..

sometimes the stroy is not so important or significant as the way the Storyteller (read director) tells u .. which addds thrill.., passion and affection between u and the movie.

directed by K. asif the film's main soul lies in the legendary words (read dialogues)

but its sad to know that many of us dont know about that legend genius who wrote the dialogue.

he was Aman, who wrote the dialogues as well as the screenplay..

the film tells the story between a Father and Son who unfortunately are the King and crown prince of a great dynasty.

The great Badshah Jalaluddin Mohammed Akbar and the crown prince. Shehzada Nooruddin Mohammad Saleem.

there comes a beautiful CATerina( read Aandhi not katrina kaif !) and the Shehzada is ready to break all boundaries and shed all responsibility just to fetch her..

and the Badshah roars :

" Mughaon ki saltantat ke Taj ko ek Rakkasha ke pairon ki Pajeb banana chahte ho..

Maloom hua ki Shehjade Hindustan ke Takt ke ek Laundiya ko nachana chahte hai...."

The soul and jaan of this movie is the Great Prithiraj kapoor...

no one could have made this words as meaningful as his distinct kingsize voice...

i think he is the Greatest king character ever to appear on Silver Screen... what u say ????

there are other characters in the film too..

Durga khote as Jodha bai..

Ajit as Durjan singh..

oh I forgot Dilip Saab as Salim..

but its my personal feel that this is the film in which dilip saab seems dominated by any other character..

this is truly a film of Late Prithvi Raj kapoor...

hope after this review, apka dil Zaroor karega ek baar aur Dekhne ko this legendary film..

and yes u will start loving Urdu after seeing this movie..

good luck...

Do rate......

Good day.

God bless u... :-)

Mugal-e-azam is a movie which was made at the time when the bollywood industry just born to eastman-colour.The use of classic, elegant, elevated language celebrating the adventures and achievements of legendary era of mugals has made it masterpiece.Even though it has got the digital, colourful mask, but the original balck and white is uncompromised to any of the latest movie for its direction, script and ofcourse...pyar kiya to darna kya.The base line of story of a lady standing against a monarch for love and sacrificing everything on the way depicts our values of love to lusture. The dialouge delivery is awsome, the gravity of character delivered by great Pritvi raj kapoor is splendid. This is a movie you can watch number of times, fully involved.when I watched this movie in my childhood and to-date it has brought no difference in it's taste of entertainment. This antique masterwork still holds firm ground in the crowd of bollywood's slippery surface.I watched this movie

The epic love story of Salim and Anakarali is all time classic of bollywood...

The role of Salim(Dilip kumar) fighting against his illustrious father Akbar(prithivaraj kapoor) is one the best in Indian cinema.

The epic love story of Salim and Anakarali is all time classic of bollywood.

The role of Salim(Dilip kumar) fighting against his illlustrious father Akbar(prithivaraj kapoor) is one th e best in Indian cinema.

The story deals with the subject of

a son( who would be future king of India)and his father’s conflict.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------

The father, Emperor Akbar (Prithiviraj Kapoor) walks barefoot to Salim Chisti’s Mazaar to pray for a son. With the saint’s blessings god rewards Shahenshah Akbar with a son, this news of a son born to Jodhabai(King’s Akbar wife) is conveyed to Akbar by a maid servant, hearing this Akbar rewards the maid a diamond ring and he promise her that in her whole life with this ring as a proof she can demand one favour from Shahneshah Akbar that will be granted to her.

As time passes the emperor’s son return back to his kingdom after expanding his kingdom and a royal welcome is given to him.

The rest of the story is all about the love of Salim for the maid( she is daughter of the same maid whom Akbar presented the diamond ring) for whom he is even ready to leave his father’s kingdom.

But Emperor Akbar doesn’t want his only son to be involved with Anarkali no matter what, for him his son is born to rule Hindustan and not to fall in love and that also with one of the maid servant.

In the end Akbar who wins in separating the two decides to kill Anarkali by fixing her in the wall so that his son never ever finds about Anarkali. But Anarakli’ mother shows Akbar the diamond ring ask him one favour that he promised to her and she ask emperor to forgive the life of her daughter, Emperor Akbar is now helpless because of the word which he gave to her and ask both mother and daughter to live the country and never to return back ever.

The dialogues of the movies are the highlight of the movie especially between Salim and Akbar.

The songs sequence was also good and specially the song ’’pyar kiya to darna kya’’ for which the sheesh mahal set up was constructed at Mehooob studio was brillant.

The movie was directed by K Asif and it took him more then five years to complete the movie.

Overall a must for everyone.

Excellent!

Excellent is the word for Mughal-e-Azam.

It has excellent cast, acting, choreography, songs, dialogues and dress designing and jewellery designing. No wonder it was made in many years.I have heard the Sheeshmahal shown in this movie was broken many times to give it a perfect finish. If you have visited Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort in Agra, the movie becomes more enjoyable as many scenes are shot here.

I have seen both versions of Mughal-e-Azam,black and white and colored.Color version is much better. It also took a lot of time to color it.Artists who have colored it with their painstakingly skills need to be congratulated for their hard work.

Madhubala looks too beautiful in the colored version.

Mughal-E-Azam is the painful story of Akbar's son Salim and Anarkali who are ultimately separated.

Prithviraj Kapoor(Akbar),Durga Khote(Jodhabai),Dilip Kumar(Salim) and Madhubala as Anarkali are memorable in their acting skills. Most noteworthy is Madhubala who not only looks charming but acts and dances also well.

Mughal-e-Azam is a must watch for its excellent song sequences, terrific dialogues and Madhubala's exquisite and endearing beauty.

Thanks for reading my review.

My Pleasure to Write
Mar 15, 2005 09:18 PM 3143 Views

As much is the pleasure in watching a film, so much is the pleasure in writing about it. Now, may be I need to narrow down the wide perception of the word ?pleasure?. In those days, screenplay techniques were not so sophisticated as today; script was the most entertaining segment of a film. Keeping these limitations in mind, Mughal-e-Azam, with its technical brilliance and lyrical richness, is a pleasure to watch.

K.Asif?s voice: The country India, personified, can tell umpteen great love stories; and one among them is Mughal-e-Azam.

Mughal-e-Azam is the story of selfless love between Salim (Emperor Akbar?s son) and Anarkali (a court dancer). Simultaneously, it also unfurls Akbar?s love for India (Hindustan). It is the war between two generations, two loves; each making an attempt to influence the future.

Prince Salim is the favorite of all: his mother Joda Bhai, his father Emperor Akbar and hundreds of women who die for an opportunity to serve him. But Salim is fascinated with the most beautiful woman he had ever seen: Anarkali, a court dancer. And Akbar is against a courtesan being the future empress of India (He felt it degrading the country?s pride). So he goes every extent to separate the couple; so far that, he agrees to fight a war against his own son (actually Salim challenges Akbar for Anarkali?s release from jail).

Though history does not support the climax of the film, the film is soothing enough to convey the message: Love can never be won over.

Crew: The attempt to design and decide a film of such magnitude is an utmost challenge to the makers. The lavish sets and the technical momentum involved are a treat to watch. Especially in 1960, no film could have been so appealing and the director-producer K.Asif deserves full credit for the great effort. He has taken good care to present the war scenes with aplomb. His writers have given him a rich script and this film composes of the best dialogues in the Indian cinema.

Another asset of the film is the divine music composed by maestro Naushad. Every song has been wonderfully composed; especially the Tansen-kind-of song was beautiful and its mood was in perfect sync with the on-screen flow of images. The lyrics are simply great.

Cast: To prove that nothing is perfect, this film suffers in the performance department. Dilip Kumar as Salim has delivered his most unimpressive performance in this film. He looks out of place in most scenes, though he is classy in some subtle moments. He was expressionless when riveting expressions were required. He was at ease in displaying Salim as a lover, but he failed to display him as a proud prince and warrior. Pritviraj Kapoor as Akbar was fine, but could not stop himself from going overboard. The rest of the cast did their job decently.

To prove that imperfectness too is not perfect, the best part of film lies again in the performance department. The shine of the film is the ethereal other-worldly beauty of Madhu Bala. Not only was she heavenly, but she has delivered one of the greatest on-screen performances in the Indian film panorama. I cannot imagine anyone else as Anarkali after watching her in Madhu Bala.

Black-n-White: I have watched the color version (newly released) before watching the black-n-white version. I was impressed by the sets, designs and costumes. But when I watched the older version, which was partly in color (?Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya? song), I felt the real feel of the making involved. Color makes some things easy for the film-makers, but to make such a grand-scale film in black-n-white is an absolute challenge and according to me, K. Asif was successful.

Warning: Normal viewing may not be sufficient to enjoy the film; utmost concentration is necessary.

Mughal-e-Azam
Mar 04, 2005 11:31 AM 3601 Views

I saw this movie way back in 1987 or 1988 when I was 12 year old.The dialogues then were difficult for me to follow.. my urdu was not that good.. but watching a movie in Hyderabad old city.. sitting in theater among those who understood every word is truly a memorable experience.

People responding to every dialog be it from Akbar,Nadira, Bahar or Surayya( Mohabbat keejiyega dil se dar apne aap nikal jayega... mera naam surayya hai! aap bhoolte bohot hain.)Excellent dialogues, music and the direction make this movie a memorable master piece. Watching the same movie in colour is really a dream come true.

The grandeur of Sheesh Mahal, the riches of the moghuls and the costumes of the characters in the movie turn colour full is a wonderful thing that happened. Naushad, Dilip kumar and all of the people associated with the movie must be delighted to se the movie transformed with today?s technology.

Asif depicted ''Mughal-e-Azam'' the emperor Akbar in shades of humble father, Great emperor, Patron of art and epitome of justice.

The movie shows the love of Saleem and Anarkali. Akbar opposes the charming and beautiful anarkali to become a princess. Asif establishes the characters well Saleem as a true lover... anarkali the kaneez who did not dream of becoming a queen and it was just her fate that love struck her... took her closer to a prince and then away forever.. but in her last moments she could prove her selfless love for saleem in front of Akbar.

The best Kavvali I saw or heard in my life is in this movie. ''Teri mehefil me kismat aazmakar ham bhi dekhenge...'' In all the movie is fascinating and classic lines...

''ye kaneez Jalaluddeen Mohammad Akbar ko aapna khoon muaf karti hai''

''Saleem jung ke bagair hi kamiyaab hai. Ab jung nahi hogi''

''Mohabbat keejiyega dil se dar apne aap nikal jayega... mera naam surayya hai! aap bhoolte bohot hain.'' and many many more..

I recommend this movie. Keeping the movie aside and looking at the love story historically.

I wonder if saleem love was really that genuine or mere infatuation to her beauty.. he married many later. He followed Mehrunnisa(Noor jahan) with the same zeal as for anarkali and when Akbar banished him to battle field and married off Noor Jahan.. after akbars death Saleem attaked the husband of noor jahan and stole the queen back.. and god knows how many lovers he had apart from official wives(Noor Jaan was No.20). The most lasting of the marriages of Prince Saleem was with Noor Jahan.

Good to know that the VCD of this movie in colour is made available in the market. I was searching to buy one since the movie was re-released.

An epic descriptive of love v/s prestige
Dec 06, 2004 10:24 AM 3386 Views

I was free as for sunday a holiday n my pals and me deicided to go in for Mugal-e-aazam . having seen the movie earlier some 8-9 yrs back when I was a kid I did remember most of trhe movie but what I didn't recollect before seeing movie were the dialogues ...actually the best part of the movie . movie start with shahzhahan akhbar n darbar and then u see akbar walking in sun barefooted to beg for a son form GOD . next movie rolls around akhbar's son brought up in palace n taking life for granted and akhbar sending him off the boy to battle ground for being brought up , so that makes him more mature to sit besides akhbar later in life . As for the whole movie the dialogues are the best stuff Akhbar n son Salim arguing about the love of Salim Anarkali and between Anarkali n Akbar , they are simple superb . A cool blend of urdu the tongue of mughals n hindi makes the dialogues worth listening like the one '' HUM APNE BETE KE DHADHAKTE HUE DIL KE LIYE HINDUSTAN KI KISMAT NAHIN BADAL SAKTE ''are really good . Through the whole movie I just sit there not even talking for a glimpse so not to miss a single line ...now u can judge how worth is the movie . About the music I sould say is really good especially the song '' JAB PYAR KIYA TO DARNA KYA ....'' '' TERI MEHFIL AZMA KAR HUM BHI DEKHENGE ....'' '' ZINDABAD ZINDABAD AA MOHAUBBAT ZINDABAD ....'' '' MOHAUBBAT KI JHOOTHI KAHANI PE ROE ....'' however movie ends in a sacrifice n kept us thinking for a while does power and prestige really matter more or the love is better . we kept thinking and the topic got more n more complex . Movie actually shows powerful Akhbar separating away Ankarkail n Salim for the pride of the country but is that actually right ....? Well I will advice you to see the movie light headed and don't carry the plot to your heart . Its a complete family movie packed with good music for you to enjoy .

Pros : You must see the movie

Cons: Don't take the movie to your heart !!!!

Immortal in love
Nov 28, 2004 03:09 PM 5509 Views

This is the story of an ordinary girl ''Anarkali'' and Prince Salim - the classic rich guy poor girl story, brought out on screen in an epic n powerful way. The sheer opulence , the sets for this film, which apparently cost a whopping 1.5 crores in the early 50's to make, plus that it took over a year to make, is worth a dekho.

One can watch Mughal - E- Azam for a plethora of reasons.

It could be , to see the immortal beauty of Madhubala radiating in every scene, she is present in.

Or the viciousness of the villainess , played by Nigar Sultana.

The scintillating music by Naushad sahab. The sheer poetic, and powerful songs, the performance of Prithviraj Kapoor. The list goes on.

This review of mine, I will be showcasing scenes which I thought, says a lot. Not everyone would agree perhaps, but, then this is where I will put in my musings.

Immortal scenes for me :

1) Where Nigar Sultana, as Bahar , dons the queen's crown, tells her intent to be queen of the realm. The dialogues there are potent.

2) When Madhubala'( is questioned by the king why she did not flinch, while the prince shoots an arrow..and her answer to that question.(after this she is given the title anarkali)

3) Anarkali, when presnted with thorns by the prince , quoting ''Kaanto ko murjhane ka dar nahi hota'' ( thorns don't have fear losing their freshness).

4) The immortal scene where Salim romances Anarkali, to the back drop of the superb rendering of Prem Jogan Banke, But Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, where he teases her face with a feather.

5) When Salim says to Anarkali,( the scene where she tries to flee his arms, on account of the emperor walking in ) '' Jo mohabbat dar jaaye, woh mohabbat nahin, aiyaashi hai, gunaah hai'' ( The love that is fearful, afraid is not love but lust, a sin- I do hope that is a sincere translation)

6) The song ''Pyar Kiya to Darna Kya'', where Madhubala as Anarkali , proclaims her love with gusto. The words that were so powerful, the scene - shot in sheesh mahal, was so emphatic, ''Maut wohi jo duniya dekhe, ghut ghut ke yun marna kyu''

Awesome stuff this.

7) Where one's hear goes out to Durga Khote as Maharani Jodhabai, distraught, when she is confronted with the choice between her son, and her husband. The anguish on her face is a scene to be seen .

8) The song '' Zindabad Zindabad'' (in which I read somewhere, that around 100 chorus singers were taken - WOW.

9) The confrontations between Anarkali and Akbar, were classic, specially the last, when after he agrees to her last request, and she forgives him for her death.

10) The Sets, The effort put into this film by K Asif, The immortal Dialogues, The music,The Songs, the renditions, The performances by everyone concerned - Dilip Kumar, Prithviraj Kapoor,Durga Khote, Ajit, Murad,Nigar Sultana and above all - Madhubala. Yes this is one movie that's worth a dekho even now.

This film is so good, that it does not require artificial coloring. The dialogues are so powerful, they do not need digital enhancing. The songs sound as good without a dose of enhancements.

But this is how u r gonna get to see it on the big screen. So u dont have a choice. Go see it, cause such movies only deserve to be scene in the theatres.

Enjoy!

Mmmmmm?.Movies, Mouthshut and mastsity, I was really dying to see, having starving for movies for more then a month the first thing I did was to keep my Mouthshut and click the home page Mouthshut.com, then I started to do my homework on Hindi movies at Mouthshut, well trust me the easiest way for finding the best movie is to browse the Mouthshut.com?s reviews on movies and there I found some of the sincere opinion from users who had seen the movies. Well this is what I like the most about Mouthshut is we can find the rating coming directly from users and not from some damn newspaper where all the movies are rated generously.

So I read reviews on some of the new films Mughul-e-azeem, Aitbear, Nach ?.on Mouthshut.com and came to a decision that Mughul-e-azeem was the all time best classical and remake.

There were many useful opinions on all these movies on Mouthshut and it was also very much informative. Immediately I decided to watch Mughul-e-azeem ? the film was very well and peoples watched with great respect and determination although it was hard time for me to understand urdo as I kept on bugging my boyfriend (I m not going to talk about him) all the time. he knows this language, and said that he had seen this movie 10 times (pretty hard to believe he watch it when it was in mono color?? 10 times).

I liked the role of Akber the most he was great in his act. The love story was perfect. But I don?t understand why Indian movies have so many songs but in this movie I loved all of them.

Thanks to the members of Mouthshut for such great reviews on movies

Tampering with a master-piece

Tajmahal is plain white.. Why not paint it with hues of red and blue? Why can't we modify that old gramaphone in our house to function as a music system? How about modifying a typewriter to perform computations aka a computer? Everything can be done, right? Existing technologies are enough to convert any old and classic machine into a new one!! Who wants the old junk when it can be modelled and marketed in a brand new way?

Well, I am yet to see Mughl-E-Azam in colour. I have seen the older version and it's one of the best movies our hindi film industry has ever produced. The true beauty of an eternal love story was brilliantly bought out by the best actors of that era, Dilip kumar and madhubala..

I strongly feel that it is wrong to tamper with a master piece. If at all anyone has to see and enjoy the brilliant films of yester years, is it necessary that it should be packaged and remixed? Beauty of a film lies in watching it the way it was made....

Remember the melodious songs of the good old days? Someone started the trend of remixing the songs and now, we have almost all the good songs remixed with semi-clad models in tow. If mughal-e-azam is able to earn good money, it is going to start a new trend.

A trend of colouring all the old movies and presenting them in a new, remixed form. Just think how much effort the directors and producers of fifties and sixties might have put to create the magic on screen? To tamper with their work would be an injustice to them. Classics remain classics, irrespective of their colour. I feel it's better if left untouched.

Informative & Detailed Review on Mughal-E-Azam

This was the first time I was experiencing some kind of anxiety after I went to see Agneepath in the theatre. First time I saw audience so quiet trying to soak up every work spoken & every set that is displayed in the movie. First time I saw almost everyone getting furious & looking at the source of the noise every time a cell phone rang! It was as good a movie going experience as the movie itself.

K. Asif spent crores (most expensive then & today if you count inflation) & almost 15 years to finally achieve his dream. The original cast was supposed to be Sapru & Nargis instead of Dilip & Madhubala..strange! K. Asif was among those directors who kept stalwart like Dilip Kumar in control.

The massive big sets, the costumes, the 'Sheeshmahal' (Palace of Mirrors), even the jail-scenes, the war scenes, the Mohabbat Jindabad song & related death-penalty scene, Akbar--Salim confrontations, Jodhabai--Salim interaction, Salim-Anarkali romantic scenes every thing about this movie is larger than life. At the same time the message of the movie i.e. Love before kingdom is not lost at all.

_________The MUSIC_________

Wow..! A topic of a full review. Naushad'd karamat with Shakeel Badayuni's lyrics/shayari. The first one is Mohe panghat pe which is filmed well on heavenly Madhubala just after the statue scene.

The comparo kawwali is hugely famous & every Indian knows it Teri Mehphil Main Kismat Aajmakar hum bhi dekhenge Amazing stuff from Shakeel. Muhabbat karanewalo ka bas itana hain afsana, tadapana, aah bharana, ghunt ke mar jana..kisi din ye tamsha muskurakar hum bh idekhenge After this song Dilip Kumar gives a Gulab (Rose) to Bahar but 'Kaante' to Anarkali..Anaraklai says ''Kaanton ko murzhane ka khaouf nahi hota!'' & the whoel theatre goes 'Waaah'.

Pyar kiya to darana kya has become an 'afasana' itself. Who hasn't used these words in their lifetime while talking on something..or about someone? Highly unlikely..! It is used in almost every movie except say war movies! :) Filmed in Sheshmahal & in color that time itself the song is rooted deep inside everybody's heart. Madhubala looks & acts like Anarkali & gives the best performance of her life. Some of the lines are just too good !!!!!!! 'Chhup Na sakega ishq hamara chaaro taraf hain unaka najaraa' or 'Mautt Wahi jo duniya dekhe ghut ghut kar yun manara kya'. Similarly 'Parda Nahi Jab Koi Khudase..Bando se parda karana kya' receives an applause from the audience.

Bade Gulaam Ali Khan Sahab I think I should not talk about this person..just want to say that it as quite an experience to hear those songs/performance that are not in the audio cassettes (on purpose?): (1) Shubh Din Aayo and (2) Prem jogan ke Sundari.

Other great songs are Jab raat hain aisi matwali to subah ka aalam kya hoga which has a hidden meaning that though the night is romantic the morning is going to come with death for Anarkali!!

The next one when Anarkali leaves fainted Salim is Khuda Nigehebaan ho tumhara dhadkate dil ka payaam lelo.. Class-Act the filming & the https://lyrics. Lata Mangeshkar..need we say anything about her?

Somehow my favorite Bekas pe karam kijiye Sarkar-E-Madina, Gardish main hain taqdir bhanwar main doesn't make to this resurrected version. I missed this classic. I think this one is when Madhubala is in prison.

Also, Muhabbat ki zhooti kahani pe roye doesn't make it to the new version.

Rafi-SAHAB's 'JINDABAD Jindabad ay Mohabbat Jindabad' Rafi has poured life in this song. Specially check the stanzas where Rafi goes to ultra-high notes.

_________The ACTING_________

I was most impressed with Madhubala, I think among all she gives the best performance. After this performance she comes across a little underrated as an actress. What new I can write about her looks & the adab, dignity, purity she brings to Anarkali's role? It has been described by thousands of times.

My favorite 'master' Dilip Kumar looks a little out of place in this movie. Seems he didn't enjoy working in this movie that much. Also during this movie he had to brake away from Madhubala (due to his/her father) & didn't even go to the premier & didn't watch the movie for many years to come. The STUPID AAJ-TAK / NDTV guys were asking him how it felt in the first premier & how it will feel now!!! Are NADAN-BALAKO..Do at least a little bit of homework before you speak to a legend..Is Dilip in front of Sayara going to say why he didn't go to the first premier?? You useless pigs??

Even then Dilip Kumar gives a very sincere performance. His style of raising a hand & looking sideways at the end when he is about to faint has been used by Amitabh effectively several times. (Shakti last scene when he says Usane ne meri maan ko').

Ajit gives a very energetic/jindadil performance. He makes Dilip performe better like in Naya Daur.

Prithviraj Kapoor goes a little overboard with his melodramatic dialogs & acting but Akbar couldn't have been played better. Even after all these years we can' timagine someone else doing the emperor Akbar's role.

Jodha-bai after Anarkali is the second best performance in the movie. Durga Khote has given a great performance. Anarkali's sister, her mother, the sculptor (also in the 'Jindabad' song) have given their best.

Jony Walker, Jala Aga (jr Salim) & Tabassum & of course Murad (Mansingh) give quality performances. Actually Ustad Zakir Husain was asked ofr Jr Salim role which was done by Jalal Aga.

_________Significant SCENES_________

Here are few great ones that appealed to me very much yesterday. Of course the scene where Salim after Bahar's (Nigar Sultana) cunning request inaugurates the famed/hyped ''statue'' with an arrow..! The statue appears when Akbar is all praise of it, the statue starts moving! It is Madhubala painted in white & presented as a statue..!! Just too good.

Anarkali's sister's interaction with Salim & her taunt to Ajit (Durjansingh) that her name is not 'Kabakht ladaki', Anarkali-Salim romantic scene with Bade Gulam Ali khan Sahab's performance. (Asif spent 1 year convincing him to sing for a movie---he was not at all ready to use his pure cheez for a movie!);

Anarkali running to Salim in the fear of Akbar & then fainting at the feet of Salim. Dilip Kumar's some of the dialogs (forgot them). The mukabala song (Hum bhi dekhenge), the sheeshmahal song (Pyar kiya to daraka kya);

Anarkali saying 'Jill-e-Elahi Anarkali tumhe apana khoon maaf karati hain'. The last one where Akbar realises his promise due to the ring he gave Madhubala's mother.

_________CONCLUSION_________

With the complete colored effort the new Mughal-E-Azam is a 'Do not miss' kind of a movie. Experience it in a multiplex with a great sound system. It is an all time great classic that every Indian should be proud of. The handling is sort of melodramatic but OK for a historic movie.

The story also not supported by the history & is sort of a legend. The end is unnecessary. (Akbar lets go Anarkali, her mother & sister in order to show that the emperor wasn't a merciless person).

Mughal-E-Azam (1960)
Nov 14, 2004 11:01 AM 3432 Views

Genre:

Drama / War / Romance

Plot Summary:

Set in the 16th century AD, the movie brings to life the tale of the doomed love affair between the Mughal Crown Prince Saleem and the beautiful, ill-fated court dancer, whose fervor and intensity perpetrates a war between the prince and his father the great Mughal Emperor Akbar, and threatens to bring an empire to its knees.

Cast overview:

Prithviraj Kapoor .... Emperor Akbar (as Prithviraj)

Madhubala .... Anarkali

Durga Khote .... Empress Jodha Bai

Nigar Sultana .... Bahar

Ajit .... Durjan Singh

Kumar .... Sangtaraash (sculptor)

Murad .... Raja Maansingh

That said --this is a big historical melodrama about the tragic romance between Salim, son and heir of the Moghul ruler Akbar, and a slave girl called Anarkalia. There is a respectable implicit psychodynamic element to the story -- as a child, Salim was seen by his father as spoiled, so he was sent off into wars for ten or 20 years, ripped out of his cozy life and away from his mother -- which can kind of ''explain'' his later willingness to risk absolutely everything for the love of the beautiful slave girl.

For me this was the kind of Bollywood movie parodied in ''Bollywood Calling,'' though it is much better--but every line delivered is stentorian or worse, the characters are really one-dimensional (mother is motherly, Salim is passionate and self-willed, father is virtually unyielding, slave girl is alluring and vulnerable), there are many scenes of the slave girl in chains, etc. There's a good amount of spectacle--big armies, big terrifically-costumed armies on horseback and of course elephants, and some very satisfying palace dance performances, most notably in the last third of the movie which is in color.

Any way the all time fav. movie is back now with full colors and same message...

Don't come between love

mumbai india
Can there be anything better?
Nov 06, 2004 11:53 AM 3112 Views

A big hi to everyone reading what i'm going to write. im a 22 yr old management student from mumbai, and a big fan of the movie mughal-e-azam.

i've already seen the movie twice on tv, and am very excited at the fact that its going to get released in theatres again. rearing to go and watch it. believe me its one of the best movies i've ever seen.

extra-ordinary performances from everyone, right from Prithviraj Kapoor to Dilip Kumar (who happens to be my favourite actor), from Madhubala (who happens to be my favourite actress, and without doubt the most beautiful woman ever born on earth) to Durga Khote and everyone else.

exceptional direction by K. Asif, and then who can ever forget those songs...lyrics of shakeel badayuni and music by naushad (both are my favorites) which go beyond excellence. 'pyaar kiya to darna kya', 'aye mohabbat zindabad', 'mohabbat ki joothi kahani pe roye', 'bekas pe karam kijiye', khuda nigehbaan ho tumhara'...all these songs can make it to the top of the charts in any given era of music (the less said about today's era the better).

even the screenplay...for example the scene where akbar tosses away the ring given to his kaneez which she brings to him, reminding him of his pledge given years ago. it falls in one of the pans of his insaaf-ka-taraazu. the taraazu naturally tilts and akbar realises that insaaf has not been done.

or the 'pyaar kiya to darna kya' song, where when madhubala sings 'parda nahi jab koi khuda se, bando se parda karna kya' and points to akbar, the god-fearing akbar, who is seething with anger, feels humbled and shows it through his eyes. just brilliant!

so if you want to have your money well spent this diwali, please go for mughal-e-azam. you'll want to watch it again and again. they dont get better than this. after all, even today's actors and actresses need to watch such movies to learn how to act. because movies dont sell on the amount of lipstick you apply, but how close to reality you can portray the character.

just look at the performance of Madhubala...you wont see a better performance on screen ever in your life. hum keh rahe hain.

Bombay - Mumbai India
Movie-E-Azam
Aug 29, 2004 06:20 PM 3638 Views

Some movies are meant to be seen for the script, some for the performances, some for the production values, some for the music and still some for the director?s ability to transcend all inertia and present a dream; however there are some which transcend all limits and become a benchmark for the successive generations of filmmakers. One of these is Mughal-E-Azam, an extravaganza which is a case study for all those inclined to believe that filmmaking is all about camera angles and opulent costumes, all about cinematography and 50 crore budgets.

A movie that speaks volumes about the perseverance and dedication of one man to a dream that held true inspite of severe setbacks, Mughal-E-Azam is a full three course lunch, a sumptuous feast for the eyes and an epic in motion. I would not do justice to the movie if I do not call it a watershed in the history of Indian Cinema.

Mughal-E-Azam narrates the story of an Emperor Akbar (Prithviraj Kapoor) caught between his love for his duty as an emperor and his love for his son and the dilemma he finds himself in when these two move on a course destined to put them on loggerheads with each other.

On another level, Mughal-E-Azam is also the story of two star-crossed lovers (Salim and Anarkali) caught in the whirlpool of nationalistic and social norms that are but a foreboding of the imminent doom in their love story. To the credit of the film, both stories move on parallel tracks and still maintain their originality and complement each other like multi-layered layers of the same crust.

Prithviraj Kapoor is simply brilliant in his performance as Emperor Akbar. The booming voice, the towering personality and the intense anguish in his eyes speak volumes. Mughal-E-Azam was a fitting culmination to a career that began as Sikander and ended with Akbar. Although Prithviraj continued performing till his death in 1972, Mughal-E-Azam marked the zenith of his career. Some of the best scenes in this movie show him in a brilliant confrontation with one of the greatest actors of Indian Cinema ever ? Dilip Kumar. Incidentally, this movie boasts of some of the greatest confrontation scenes in the history of Hindi cinema.

Dilip Kumar as the son of Akbar and Crown Prince of Mughal India delivers an impeccable and regal performance and as usual lives the role to the expectations. As Salim, he?s able to show the fearlessness of a warrior, arrogance of a prince, deep love for Anarkali, frustration of a loser and the spirit of rebellion so well characterized by the youth. In short, in this performance he predates the Angry Young Man that was to take the Hindi film industry by storm 15 years later. Watching him perform, one cannot but feel the sheer power of performance. No doubt, he?s considered by many critics to be the greatest actor to grace the Indian film screen.

Ajit as Durjan Singh is a classic act. Ajit brings to Durjan the sublime ego and proud chivalry of a Rajput chieftain and the dialogue delivery of ?Ek Rajput apni jaan haarta hai, apna vachan nahin harta? is simply a lesson for all who think a booming voice is all that makes a dialogue a success.

Durga Khote as Empress Jodha Bai lives the role with characteristic élan. She is simply brilliant in the portrayal of a woman caught between a husband and a son and who also has to discharge her duties as an Empress in the face of emotional anguish. This happens to be one of her most brilliant roles and she does complete justice to the role. Some of her confrontation scenes with Dilip (her son) and Prithviraj (her husband) are sheer magic.

Kumar as the sculptor is extra-ordinary and plays the role of a revolutionary to perfection so also does Nigar Sultana play her role of the jealous courtesan with utmost aplomb. The confrontation scene between the two in the beginning gives a glimpse of the great confrontations between all the lead actors that keep appearing in the movie at a brilliant regularity and each confrontation is a beauty in itself.

Murad as Raja Mansingh, Jillo as Anarkali?s mother Jillo Bai, Sheela Delaya as Suraiya also do justice to their roles, especially Jillo who plays a commoner and a doomed mother to perfection.

But the film belongs to Madhubala. Never has an actress before or after her captured the essence of deep loss and hopeless love with a quiver the way Madhubala does it in Mughal-E-Azam. To summarize, Madhubala is Anarkali and Anarkali is Madhubala. She performs with earnestness and a passion which is unequalled and unsurpassed by many and even today she is the definitive Anarkali.

Naushad?s baton and Shakeel Badayuni?s lyrics are a combination to die for and the song ?Pyar Kiya to Darna Kya? is still considered one of the best expressions of youth rebellion in Hindi cinema.

But the man who deserves the greatest of our applause is K Asif- the man whose ambition and ruthless perseverance led to one of the finest hours of Indian Cinema. Everything about the movie is splendour personified and it required a talent of his calibre to carry it with a dignity unequalled by any other movie. The attention to detail, the setting up of brilliant sets, the most sensual scene ever picturised in India (without a slight hint of physical or sexual involvement), the greatest battle scene ever picturised and the perfect blend of script, direction and performance such that none of these overshadow the other but complement each other is a silent salute to the genius of a man who made it possible.

All in all, a movie to live by??. A movie to die for. A Classic, a Legend. A Movie.
