Mudhumalai - serene place to visit
Mar 24, 2018 07:49 PM3580 Views

Last year April, after spending our holiday in Ooty with our family we went to Mudumalai for our next adventure. Mudumalai is well connected by roads from Karnataka, Kerala and Tamilnadu. Let me tell you onething the route between ooty and mudumalai through kallatti was very risky, steep and the roads are not in good condition so please take utmost care possible. Another route from ooty to mudumalai is through gudalur the roads are quite good and safe through that way. But once we reached Mudumalai we were delighted, the entire place gave us a fictional feel. We reached our resort The Nestinn by the afternoon, the resort is in Masinagudi village which is close to Theppakadu elephant camp. Rooms are quite good to stay with Queen size bed, flat screen TV, seating areas and air conditioning. AC is not needed here except on April and May. All staffs are courteous in the resort and their service was good. Great experience for us to see many animals and few birds too, its full of greenery and natures beauty lies deep inside the forest. Mudumalai safari was one of the finest for us ever, safari was organised by the government itself in a jeep or a van, we loved the elephant ride most. The best part of our safari was elephant feeding camp we interacted with elephants and fed them fruits as well. Roads inside the forest are narrow but well maintained and give us a great view. As the roads passes through the forest there are more restrictions like no horns, no feeding to animals and speed limits etc. It is better to go here in the morning or evening because more chances of seeing animals. Relaxing and parking areas are well organised by the forest department. Be aware of fraudalent private jeep jafari, they dont take you into the reserve. So dont get cheated, always prefer forest department vehicle safari.

Mudhumalai is a lovely place for wildlife safaris. Accomodation are available from budget to high standards as resort, tree top, dormitory rooms and lodges etc. Forest department also provides accomodation here but we have to book in prior. Advice for all during safari is we should stay inside our vehicle and keep our children safe. Overall we had a very good experience here, its a great place to visit once in our life time. If we have luck we can spot tiger.

Everybody would love to check nothing however animals.& except for some folks like America UN agency had taken an off-the-cuff break it did came as a pleasing surprise to check wild dogs roaming blithely around, Cervus unicolor deers in herds walking next to you wish your friend,  bison's in herds once more that looked back at you right within the eye that we have a tendency to likely was like whats up chum on the thanks to moyyar falls. well worth the keep. You can either go up to Mysore once your keep in masinangudi alternatively return to ooty or coonoor.

What with hearty breakfast and peacefull dinner among the sight of animals returning to the place wherever you keep typically, . it's well worth the keep.

The jungle ride to mudumalai and moyyar is that the better part., And then you have got resorts on the watercourse banks

Excellent trip to Mudumalai...
May 10, 2012 04:40 PM16434 Views

Our family had planned for a summer outing to go somewhere cool and far way from city life for 3 days. Our first choice was Ooty, however we dropped the plan to go to Ooty due to the rush in this peak season and instead decided to visit Mudumalai. We started from Bangalore on 6th May at 7AM in the morning and halted at Kamat for breakfast around 8:30AM. By 10AM we were on the outskirts of Mysore and decided to visit the palace and brindavan gardens on our return journey.

The road till Mysore was very good but the traffic was nothing less than the bangalore traffic. Since I am not a regular driver on highways, it took me around 3 hours to reach Mysore. I had the route map with me and did not have any difficulty in getting to the Ooty road.

It was a straight road (though not a four lane road) and road condition was very good. The traffic eased out after I crossed Mysore and Nanjangud ( this is about 20 kms after mysore). We stopped for a 15 mins break after Nanjangud near a tender coconut vendor ( there are lots of tender coconut shops along the way).

By 12:30, we reached Bandipur forest gate and the kids were excited that we are in the forest finally and wanted to see wild animals..Hardly 2 mins in to the forest, we had our first sighting of a huge herd of deers..It was an excellent view..We started moving ahead and crossed the Bandipur forest department office and headed towards Mudumalai.

The drive was excellent (minus the speed breakers ) every 50 meters, later came to know this was an initiative by the forest department of tamilnadu and karnataka to reduce wild animals getting hurt by speeding vehicles.

Finally round 1:30PM, we reached the Tamil Nadu hotel where our accommodation was booked earlier. This is right opposite the Tamil Nadu Forest department office. The place was very simple but with breathtaking atmosphere around. There was a river stream flowing just outside the hotel, but we were told not to get in to the waters as the river had crocodiles in them. So we kept our safe distance from the river and enjoyed the view from far.

The climate was very cool and it was drizzling when we had checked in. After a late lunch, we walked to the government forest department counter and got safari tickets for 4 of us. The ticket costed me around Rs.150 for 4 of us. The van safari was 30 mins minutes in the forest and we were able to spot lots of deers and couple of peacock. While we were about to come out of the forest, the driver of the van spotted a huge bison and there was lot of excitement in the van.

After safari, we entered the elephant camp and the kids had great time interacting with the tamed elephants and got to know how elephants are fed and their behaviours.

We returned back to the hotel and were too tired for any more activity for the day. The next day, we got up to some wonderful chirping of lots of birds around the hotel. When I stepped out of the room, I saw a huge eagle on one of the rocks in the river..It was simply amazing..

After having breakfast, we had to check out on 7th May as we got the reservation for 6th May only due to peak season. I had the booking done prior with a homestay in Masinagudi for 7th and 8th May.. After checking out, we headed towards Masinagudi which is 8 kms and reached the homestay.

The owners were a middle aged couple and were very courteous and friendly. The food was very homely and tasty..After lunch we took a drive to Ooty which was only 28 Kms from where we stayed..But after 5 Kms we realized that this is a completely ghat road and it took us almost 2 hours to cover this distance..This road had 36 hair pin bends..This road literally stress tested my fairly new Alto car…

When we reached Ooty, it was raining very heavily and couldn’t see a thing infront of us. So we decided to turn back and go to homestay..

By 6, we were back to home stay and after discussing with the owners , we went for a jeep safari..The safari was on the peripheral roads for most of time and till the forest check post in ooty-bangalore road. The peripheral road in safari route took us to some small villages..We were shocked to see people living inside the forest with very little or no basic amenities.

On the return journey of our safari, the driver spotted a single elephant on the side of a road and alerted us..all of us were very thrilled to see this beautiful animal. The driver stopped the vehicle at a safe distance from this elephant..The elephant glanced at us and did not seem to bother..It continued to walk towards the road and crossed the road..A surprise awaited us, the single elephant was followed by 2 other big elephants, a baby elephant and another medium sized elephant which had a tusk..

This was a view which me and my family members will not forget for a very long time..They would cross the road and come back to the road and again go to other side..It was a nail biting excitement..Finally after 10 mins, the elephants moved away from the road towards the other side..We continued our safari, hardly half kilometer away , the driver suddenly stopped and took reverse and showed us 3 jumbo sized bisons near a tree..We were amazed to see how this driver was able to spot these animals..when we asked him, all he did was give us a smile and told us that this is what he does for a living.

We were thoroughly happy with the trip so far and returned back to our homestay..The next day all we did was take rest and enjoyed the view and nice climate...

On 9th may, we had to reluctantly leave this beautiful forest and head back to bangalore.. The cost for 4 of us in the homestay came to Rs.9000/- for 2 days ( for accomodation, food, safari )..

Overall a nice experience and planning to return back this year..

Greenwoods Nature Camp,Mudumalai
May 07, 2012 12:39 PM13927 Views

Been to this place last weekend. We were 8 people.Experienced bad hospitality from the care taker of the  of this place. We were misled by the caretaker for jungle safari saying that our vehicle wont be allowed for trip. They took us in jeep in bangalore-ooty highway for safari instead of taking inside jungle and charged 1600 bucks for hardly 14kms trip.We could have done it in our own vehicle.Next morning we went for trekkng with a guide(who is the caretaker himself) who charged 300/head.He made us walk around the same area in jungle and was not at all cooperative.Fed up with his attitude when we tried to bargain with him for the trekking charge, he threatened us saying that he wont allow us to leave that place alive.

Tried calling their main office where we made the booking to solve the issue. But their response was not satisfactory.Instead they asked us to make the remaining payment and escape.

Mountain Mist A Resort in Masingudi Mudumalai
Apr 08, 2012 11:08 PM13622 Views

I would like to share my experience with MountainMist Masinagudi. We a group of 14 had been to this resort located in the jungle of masinagudi, the website https://mountainmist.co.in/index.html provided eye-catching details but we were deceived a lot.

The contact person Mr. Sridhar assured we would have an ultimate stay in this resort also asked us to make a complete payment before check-in. On the day of arrival he was missing his mobile was not reachable and there was only one person to take care of 14 ppl. The food was pathetic, the resort was lacking even the basic amenities. We had a plan for staying for 2 nights but just winded in a single day.

Please be careful when choosing this specific home stay

Do not stay at Deep Jungle Home
Dec 03, 2011 11:10 AM15063 Views

Four of us stayed in the Deep Jungle Home last week, 24 November. We expected a night of peace, quiet and relaxation as is promised on the website. We are avid bird watchers, and were looking forward to seeing new birds. What we got instead was an inescapable distortion of full-volume noise that erupted from the temple across the road, beginning at 5.30 pm and continuing until 9 pm.

And the next morning it all started up again at 5.30 am!!! It is the worst and noisiest night I have ever experienced since we arrived in India 10 months ago. We wrote asking for a refund, explaining that it was the opposite to everything they said we would experience on their website, only to be told it was our bad luck to go at that festival time!!! I wrote back and said how were we to know there was a temple there, and should we not have been warned? But no, bad luck, no refund for our night from hell. DO NOT GO. This place is run by people who are greedy not greenie!!

Greenwoods Nature Camp
Jul 11, 2011 09:14 PM19458 Views

We had been to this place called Greenwoods Nature Camp as our friends strongly recommended .Get the accomodation and other details through their site https://greenwoodsnaturecamp.com.

Reaching there we felt. What beautifully PLACED(check the snaps which we clicked just standing out of the resort). You stand out and feel u r in some heaven.wonderful site selection, just heaven!

Food.AWESOME!. For the price they charge, you won't get this taste in some of the bangalore star hotels. We stayed 3 days and all 3 days we preferred food there.

Safari and trek.too good. Managed very well by the person who takes you around the jungle. We loved the trek path. He had good experience of the place and good knowledge about animals and their behaviour.

We wished we could extend it for a whole week.:)

Want to see herd of deers.do not go anywhere, just sit near the fence(backside) and u'll get the deer watching u from over the fence, a large Squirrel crossing the fence through the tall bamboo trees mistaken for some other animal.

Some of the guest who went on a safari were lucky to see tiger and cubs too!

Well managed, payment wise and all other details communicated through calls. Also other concerns too handled in-time.

So nice to be in nature FULLY! serene, calm, peaceful. Trek introduced to the eeeeeky LEECH! Good new experience. Nothing compared to the jungle serenity.

Would recommend one to experience the NATURE in real sense in this place. The best thing of this resort being not to jazzy. Like the tents and rooms actually give u jungle feel, in case they wud hve been well done 3-star hotel rooms, it wud spoiled the fun.

Coolest vacation-Mudumalai Greenwoods Nature Camp
Feb 12, 2011 09:14 PM21666 Views

I am Jitu a techie who recently relocated to Bangalore. I am sure the fellow techies can understand how stressful and pressure can take a toll at times in projects..mine was not an exception. After lot of scheduling and rescheduling.

I finally got my much awaited vacation approved in February . I wanted to take a break and just vanish to a peaceful location and the initial thoughts that came to my mind was either Ooty, Kodaikanal or Coorg. My cousin also in the same field suggested me against my idea as they are too commercial and instead suggested me a camp in Mudumalai ( this place is on the foothills of Ooty - around 60 kms from ooty ).

I was not in a mood to do any kind of research about this place and just wanted to go and relax and chill by myself. I called up Greenwoods Nature Camp and got myself a decent tent booked along with couple of other activities to keep myself busy. Within a day, my booking was confirmed and I was all set on my vacation.

I am a passionate biker. Me and my bullet were ready for the drive on the morning of 8th February 2011 at 6AM . The road till Mysore is amazing and I was able to zoom to Mysore in about 2 hours and 15 minutes.  The people from camp had informed me about couple of good hotels enroute from bangalore and I went to Kamath in Mysore and had a plate of delicious Idly & Chow Chow bath ( delicacy made of rava / suji - kara and mita ). I started from Kamat around 9AM and headed towards Bandipur and Mudumalai. After couple of breaks, I reached Mudumalai area and the camp around 12PM.

I checked in my room a.k.a European cottaged tent and was pleasantly surprised to see fan, lights, electricity and cots/beds placed inside this tent. The guide informed me that the lunch would be ready by 1PM and I still had about an hour. Being a typical me, highly enthusiastic person I wanted to make the most out of my 3 days stay. I did not want to waste this one hour the guide was kind enough to take me for a short trek to a nearby tribal village. " Something philosophical struck me while I was going through this tribal village, some of the basic things like good clothes, delicious food, decent house, electricity, etc which are taken as given in cities are still beyond the reach of some people in India. "

After the trek, we reached the camp back around 1:45PM and I was hungry.

The food was ready and had a good meal. Should say it was much better than what I had initially expected. Nothing fancy but the food was simple and tasty.  I was already enjoying my vacation. After lunch, as per schedule I was supposed to visit some view point, but after the heavy lunch I was too lazy and tired after my driving. I wanted to take a quick nap and hit the bed..Phiffff..it was already 6 when I got up and there was a jeep at the camp which was ready to take me for the evening safari. In a jiffy, I got ready. had a quick cup of ginger tea and got in to the jeep..For the first time I got an opportunity to see wild animals from striking distance. Seeing so many elephants at one place, made me to think are these elephants gathering for a  meeting or what.. What a beautiful animals..I am an avid fan of Animal Planets, National Geographic and Discovery channels. But believe me guys, watching these gigantic animals infront of your eyes is no where close to the experience in watching the tv from your living room... After some distance, I saw a family of bison grazing in the road side and enjoying their dinner. It was a fantastic views.

Looked like all them were wearing a white coloured socks :)) on their silky brown skin. I was getting more curious and wanted to see a wild cat ..preferably tiger or atleast a leopard or panther...My guide eductaed me that there are no Chettah's in Mudumalai and for that matter there are none in India..he explained me the difference between a Leopard and Chettah.. :).After about 2 hours, we were returning back, the jeep suddenly halted and my guide pointed me at a wild dog which was at the left side of the road, waiting to cross the road..The driver halted the vehicle slightly away from this dog and it gracefully crossed the road..to my surprise there were few others who came from the bush to our left and crossed the road.It was a hair raising experience for me.  I am enjoying this vacation or what.

Though I did not see any wild cat, it was still a great safari by any means..Reached the camp at 9:30PM and the climate was pretty cold..I got into my sweater and had a good dinner..I am very health concious but I made up my mind to be a foodie during my vacation and decided to eat as I wish. After dinner, I sat at the campfire and enjoyed the fully lit sky with millions of stars looking down at me..what a wonderful view..I cherished every minute of being so close to nature and wild life..After about a hour at the campfire, I retired to bed and had a sound sleep.

The next day, me and guide started at 6:30AM for the trekking and it was one of the memorable treks. It was an amazing route in the forest and spotted herd of deers, lots of peacock and a lone bison during the trek. There was a stretch of trek, which had leaches and I literally ran through that part..It was fun..Its suprising how a 6 foot man can be freaked out by a creature which is less than 6 cms.. :)).. Reached the camp back at 9AM, got ready and had the breakfast which was yummy.. I had the road map to Ooty along with the details of spots that I can see in and around Ooty...with that I left my luggage at the camp and went to Ooty and other areas ( view point, Pykara falls, Ooty gardens)..Around 3PM, I started back to the camp and was back at the camp by 6PM..The route from the camp to Ooty is simply mind blowing..view of tea estates and clouds covering and uncovering the mountain peaks was a treat to my eyes. After reaching the camp, had early dinner and went to sleep. The next day, I got up late and had breakfast..I decided I will take it easy on the 3rd day and wanted to just relax doing nothing and thats precisely what I did..Breakfast..Lunch..Dinner...:) ..I called and thanked my cousin for recommending me this location and the camp which was truly rejuvenating..

On 11th February,  after breakfast I started for Bangalore after wishing and thanking the guide and cook for being a great host.. This was my much awaited vacation and it was a great and coolest vacation..The best part was that the price was economical and it not burn my pocket..Glad I listened to my cousin..Sabar ka Fal Mitha hota hai"..' Patience yields sweet results"..

Greenwoods Camp, Madhumalai - Wonderful Experience
Jan 31, 2011 11:36 PM20525 Views

I am Jayanth working for a software company in Bangalore. I would like to share my recent experience in Greenwoods Camp, Madhumalai. I had been there for two days (29th and 30th of Jan, 2011). We left Bangalore (Along with two of my other friends) on 29th early morning and reached Greenwoods camp Madhumalai around 10 AM. We were very thrilled to see the tents around the camp as it was a first time experience for us.

This Greenwood Camp is surrounded by forest but all safety precautions are taken. There is a good fencing done around the camp so that no wild animals enter the area. We stayed in a tent which would accommodate 4 people. It was huge and very well equipped. We were provided with all facilities inside the tent like bed, blanket, electric sockets to charge our mobiles, fan and also with night lights. It was a very good experience in the tent. Amount charged to us was very minimal compared to the comforts provided to us in the tent. Food was also served hot (Veg and Non Veg).

It was very tasty when compared to the star hotels in Bangalore. We also met few localites who were very friendly to us. We went in for a night Safari where we encountered with many wild animals like Bison and Elephants. It was a wonderful experience for us. Once we were back from the Safari there was camp fire arranged for us. We had a nice time in camp fire. All in all it was a spectacular experience for all of us. We are again planning to visit this place with our other friends as I believe it is a very good place to relax. Try this place folks

Deep Jungle Home is clean and VFM
Jan 31, 2011 02:27 PM19136 Views

While returning from a wedding at Ooty, about 20 of us stopped off at Bandipur and Muddumallai sanctuary. Although we were promised tigers, we didnt see any. It is very scary at night being deep inside the forest at Deep Jungle Home. wild life sanctuary. We could hear all kinds of strange animal sounds through the thin cloth walls of the Swiss style tents all night long.

PROS:

a) It is very isolated location inside the jungle about 2 miles from the nearest main road, with only 2 other much smaller resorts. nearby. It is right on the border of the forest reserve unlike most of the other highly commercialised resorts for Muddumallai.

b) The tents and cottages are very clean for the simple life style

c)The place is excellent value for money and usually booked solid on weekends. We had to book 2 months in advance.

d) They have some basic activities for children

e) The toilets are shared communal type, but fairly clean for inside the jungle and Western style.

f) Excellent property with good location and views.

g) Multiple online web presence for booking and confirmations.(we used the URL: http://www.wildlifesanctuaryindia.com)

CONS:

a) Food is very simple and basic, may be little spicy for westernised tastes

b) Toilets are shared, separate male/ female, but clean. Doesn't compare favourably with similar jungle resorts we've been to in South Africa and Malaysia.

c) Only a few caretakers, who nods their head and speak in sign language.

d) The tour inside the forest reserve can be better and of longer duration.

e) Mobile phones work very erratically here

So overall I give it between 3 and 4 stars.

Worst Experience in Greenwoods Camp
Jan 25, 2011 07:59 PM18389 Views

I am Vinay a Banking professional. We (me and 8 of my friends) made an advance booking with Greenwoods camp for our trip last weekend(22nd and 23rd Jan). The booking procedure was very simple and everything was online.

We had really high hopes on the stay and experience believing we would stay in Jungle however we ended up staying in a Village which is not even surrounded by Forest. The website photo gallery is just false side of actuals. We stayed in a small tent which was freezing in night (No Blankets / Bed) and in the end we had to sleep in our cars with heater ON whole night. Food is really bad, very less selection of food. Caretakers are very rude in simple words they are NOT Care Takers. They don’t respond to any of your queries and also sound like they are doing a favour giving food to you "Place is not very good for a stay. Although website promises for backup power supply and electricity. You will end up staying in dark in nights. On 23rd night while we were enjoying FireCamp (11 PM), some neighbours (local villagers) started throwing stones at us as it was very dark, we couldn't locate from where the stones were coming from and we had to run into our cottages for our safety.

One of my friend tried to wake the caretaker and he didnt respond at all. THIS PLACE IS HIGHLY NOT SAFE TO GO WITH FAMILY .Me and My friends don't recommend this place

Do not stay at Deep Jungle home
Dec 30, 2010 09:59 PM17493 Views

The first idea you get hearing the name is that it will be deep inside the jungle and it will be adventurous. Though we knew it was not going to be inside jungle, we didn't expect it to be next to a village. The place was all dirty and the food real bad. We didn't even stay for few hours, we returned back immediately. It is not at all meant for families.

Beware of  this:  the website promises many activities including night safari. Night Safari is banned by the forest dept and nobody does night safari in Mudumalai. Also the safari they take you on is same one as the forest dept safari on bus which lasts for about 45 minutes and all you might get to see is elephants, macaques, peacocks and deers, all of which you can spot on highways itself.

A perfect recipe for a breathtaking weekend
Sep 01, 2010 01:19 PM19369 Views

We went to Mudumalai in August during the rainy season. We drove down from Bangalore and it took us almost 7 hours to reach there (at normal driving speed and ample breaks). The drive was smooth. We checked in at the The Blue Valley Resort.

We had already given our lunch order on the phone and the resort guys had kept it ready for us when we reached. So even before going to our cottages, we had lunch. We had booked three deluxe cottages. The cottages were side-by-side and were made of stone. I won’t say the cottages were excellent, but they were decent and a good value for money (approx. 2500 per night). There was a well manicured garden on one side of the cottages and trees and swings on the other side. The garden was amidst the best setting with the backdrop of the cloud capped mountains.

There were all varieties of flowers, shrubs and trees and I would say that it was definitely the best part of the resort. We just sat on our porch all through the evening. We asked the resort guys to make arrangements for barbecue in front of the cottages and they obliged. It was great fun to barbecue under starry night with cold breeze and slight drizzle every once in a while. We had brought our own kababs from Bangalore and the resort kitchen also provided with some marinated chicken.

The next morning we went out for a walk and saw a lot of other resorts on the same road. There are about 7 or 8 more good resorts so you can decide based on your budget. We went till the foot of the mountain, had tea there and came back. During the day, we just relaxed in the porch and lied in the garden soaking in the grand scenery. We grilled again at night. It was a good activity as there is nothing else you can do once it’s dark.

We did not go out for safari as we had small kids with us and anyways animal sightings are very few during rainy season. Besides we had already seen elephants, monkeys, deer, and a few other animals on our way there.

The food at the resort was not extraordinary, but it was good.

The objective of our trip was to check in, relax for two days, check out, and come back refreshed to Bangalore and that was precisely what Mudumalai offered.

Mysore Mudumalai Ooty trip
Jul 24, 2010 09:36 AM18330 Views

I am planed a 3 Day - 2 Night Trip to Mysore, Mudumalai and Ooty from Chennai .

With my wife and two kids

I took the Sadabathi express from Chennai and reached Mysore at 8 Am in the morning .

We did not halt in Mysore instead just got refreshed at Mysore Kamat hotel and visited the Zoo, Palace and Chamundi temple .Children wear exited to see the tall majestic giraffe at the zoo.right next to the zoo is the mysore silk sari show room run my the karnataka government .We had our lunch at RRR Andra style restaurant . The food war real good but not recommended for vegetarians After evening tea we left to Mudumalai by taxi.

We reached mudumalai by 9.PM . after passing through the Bandipur forest . as soon as we entered the forest check post the spotted deer provided a warm welcome .we had booked the swiss cottage tent at a resort called Deep jungle home .

Deep Jungle home is a beautiful campus surrounded by evergreen forest reserve with plenty of birds and wildlife around. We were exited to see the famous Mudumalai elephants Just about 50 meters from the campus. Sundaram was an excellent guide who knows the reserve like the back of his hand we went trekking with him in the morning and saw some Deer and Leopard pug marks . The camp site is attractive and in pretty good condition, considering the rate at which they offer accommodation in the ever green forest . Tents are non air conditioned but we didn't need it as the forest and over looking a stream and the rain kept things cool; mosquito nets in the tents were very effective. Food was remarkably good and varied compared with other similar places we have stayed. Staff seemed particularly friendly and helpful.

The booking procedure is also simple . Just visit https://junglehome.in .

By after noon 12 Pm we left to Ooty . on the way we visited Pykara Lake and falls .

At ooty we stayed at a hotel called Lake view. The hotel offers rooms with very good view of the lake. Ooty was too cold than expected . We had our Dinner at a restaurant called Thandoor. They offered good thandoori chicken with mint chutney .

We did not visit many places in Ooty because it was too crowded and we were tired .

Next day in the morning we left back to Mysore and boarded the train and reached back Chennai .

Enjoyable camp life in a jungle
Jul 04, 2010 10:42 AM19537 Views

Most people may be wary of Wild life and forest tourism , but it is indeed very different Interesting and Enjoyable!

I came across the link to Greenwoods nature camp Mollapalli ( http://www.greenwwoodsnaturecamp.com)

in your portal.Got in touch with them;Made a trip last week with my children. Most of the data needed is emailed to you.We rate it as one of our memorable holidays.

I was concerned when we got off the Shatabdi express at Mysore and boarded the Mysore Ooty bus. However to our surprise we found (when we got off at Thorapalli checkpost) that the jungle inhabitants were like any one of us , exposed to all the creature comforts.Every house has electricity and every one has a mobile(Airtel & BSNL have networks) lots of autos and jeeps are available to cater to the thriving jungle tourism. Every one is a marginal farmer.

Forests and Jungles are pretty safe and enjoyable, provided you abide by the rules strictly. The place belongs to wildlife and we are their guests.

We got off at Thorapalli checkpost(in TN).The Mudumalai-Bandipur forest stretches to about 25kms from Bandipur to Thorapalli check post and is just 8kms form Gudalur. Our guide received us at the bus stop near the petrol bunk(we were on mobile contact right from Mysore)and arranged for an auto to take us to the camp. The camp is a cozy place in Mollapalli village(2kms from Highway). It's well protected from wild animals and is fully fenced. It can accommodate 10-15 people in a cottage .A family of 4-5 in a large room like tent; 2 and more in small tents that have two beds each. Automatic solar lamps glow at night in the pathway in the camp.

The tents can be zipped in to keep away mosquitoes and insects and are housed in cement floored asbestos covered sheds. The camp has lots of shade c mango , coconut and areca nut trees.Thick jungle lies right in the back of the camp where elephants and deer are frequently sighted.

Fresh Tasty food(in sumptuous quantities) is available in varieties round the clock in the camp as per schedule. On the whole the experience is good and easy on the pockets.(below Rs1000/ per head per day for food and stay)The staff are friendly and want you to have good time.

This is elephant country.Strolls after dark are not encouraged.Bright colored clothing are to be avoided in the dark. You have marginal farmers with plantations of coconut , banana, arecanut, coffee, jack fruit & ginger.Elephants love to devour them.Hence most of these plantations have electrified fences.Elephants hang around after dark everywhere, people not abiding by jungle rules have been killed and maimed by

elephants.

Early morning trekking in the jungle is very enjoyable. It's cool visually pleasing with cool moist bamboo canopies, lovely dark green patches, streams, lovely sounds of insects chirping, birds cooing , bisons' mewing and an occasional elephant trumpeting at a distance. You come across animal tracks on soft mud viz. elephant, leopard etc.The 3.5 hour trek is a must as the weather is misty, below 25 degree Celsius and very exciting and thrilling. You are not allowed to trek without a guide as it can be dangerous.

Jeeps can be hired to go to Theppakadu.TN forests deptt, conducts a wildlife safari on beaten jungle roads(not by private operators) between 4-6 pm. We saw herds of deer, elephants, monkeys, we are told that leopard and tiger sightings are rare and a lucky few get a glimpse. We witnessed feeding of elephants at the feeding center. It's a great sight; Elephants hungrily gorge on the massive balls of rice , ragi and jaggery. There is a small museum with an interesting digital compilation of animal sounds which is menu driven and you can choose to hear the sound of your choice. If you are lucky you may get a chance to ride an elephant.Elephant safaris are booked in advance at Ooty. You may get an opportunity at Theppakadu, if there is spare capacity.

You must not miss the Night jeep safari conducted between 6-9pm. Wild animals prefer to come out in the dark. They take you on the highway at a slow speed of 15-20kmph and stop to show you animals thru headlight. We saw bison's and elephants chomping away.We saw horn bill, wild boar and porcupine.

As said earlier leopards and tigers eluded our sight.

Pykara lake is about 20kms from camp , a nice scenic place with rapids and lots of monkeys. There is a scenic valley view midway at Midpoint.

The trip is a photographer's delight. We took close to 200+ pictures on our Digi SLR.I would strongly recommend this jungle tour to people tired (pollution, noise and hurry) and wanting a Peaceful Relaxing holiday away from the 9 to 5 metro life.

Greenwoods camp in Mudumalai: Value for Money
Apr 20, 2010 11:20 PM14707 Views

I am a software professional and a very passionate wild life enthusiast. We (me and 4 of my friends from Infosys) made an advance booking with Greenwoods camp for our trip in first week of April.  The booking procedure was very simple and everything was online. Got the confirmation email promptly. We had our own doubts about the accommodation and food before we ventured to Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary.

Couple of days before our trip, a very detailed route map, precautionary measures while driving in forest and safety tips while in forest were sent to us based on which we made our packings and bought necessary stuffs for our trip. We reached the place on a Saturday morning around 11 AM and the guide showed us our cottage. The room was pretty decent and had beddings for 7 people though we were only 5 of us. After refreshing ourselves we went to the dining hut which was located between 2 sheds all of which were on a platform.  The lunch was good and it was typical south indian food (buffet) .

The sheds had 2 camping tents which was placed on the platform and both of them were occupied by a family. The guide took us to few scenic spots after Gudalur which were phenomenal and we spent close to 3 hours. We came to the camp back by 6:30PM and later realized that the jeep has been waiting for us since 5:30PM. The jeep safari started of with a bang. Yep. It started raining cats and dogs..Me and my friends were in half mind to go for the safari or not. Later we realized that the trip was for adventure and adventure is what we would do with this mindset we sat in the jeep and headed for the safari..Every tree or bushes or deers that we saw in the safari looked like a wild cat and later we were disappointed that it was not the case. After about 20 minutes in the safari we saw a family of elephants right in the middle of road and blocking the way for vehicles. It was a feast to our eyes where a young elephant (probably a baby elephant) was trying to cross the road, would cross the road and again goes back to its mother..

We took atleast 15 snaps of this group and the family moved away from the road in to the forests. My friends and I were thrilled with this experienced and were all pumped up. There were atleast 50 or more deers that we spotted on the way.The driver took a turn from the forest main road to smaller roads leading to some village in forests and hardly 500 meters from the turn the driver shouted " SNAKE".. It was pitch dark and the only source of light was the jeeps powerful light. We eagerly looked through the jeeps windshield and saw a fat shiny snake crossing the road..Not sure what snake it was but it was atleast 6 feet. We could not take a good shot at it as it was too fast and went inside the bushes. While we were returning back we saw the same group of elephants peacefully grazing on one side of the road. The jeep driver stopped the vehicle for couple of minutes. The sound of the brakes apparently pissed of one of the younger member of the family and it gave a huge sound and challenged the jeep by advancing few steps as if it was running towards us..We got a mixed feeling ( Shock,  fear, excitement ) and requested the jeep driver to move away which he promptly did. We were not very lucky to see any wild cat during our safari but the safari none the less was just too good. By the time we reached back it was around 8:45PM..

We had our dinner and then we enjoyed the camp fire...The guide requested us to be ready by 6AM the next day for trekking.

We got up at 5:45 AM and to our disappointment it was still raining..The thrill of safari was still in our minds and dil mangey more. So 4 of us started off to trekking..One of my friend dropped the idea of trekking as he was too tired. The trekking was inside the forests and the wet ground made our trek very slippery...after about 20 mins in to trekking it started raining heavily. The guide wanted us to turn back and return to the camp as it would be difficult to walk ahead in the trekking path..We did not have any other option but to return to the camp.

At the camp the breakfast was ready and this was the best of all the meals. 2 varieties of sandwich, 2 varieties of south Indian break fast, Omlette, fresh fruit juice was just too much..We ate as much as we could and packed our bags to return back to Bangalore..Just as we were about to leave the sun started shining and all we could do was smile and told the guide that we would be back again to complete the unfinished business of trekking.

The rates were very nominal, cost for each person came upto Rs.1200, for the complete package including safari, trekking, food and accommodation. That's what I call it as value for money.

I am an expat from Belgium and visited Bangalore for a month. During one of the weekends decided to do a trip in the wild. Colleagues suggested Mudumalai or Bandipur for the trip. I did some research and found Green woods nature camp in the internet. ( https://greenwoodsnaturecamp.com).. Right from first call, I felt I was dealing with professional organizers. The management in Greenwoods patiently provided me all the information and sent adequate details through email.

Highlight of the trip :-

  1. Sighted a huge tiger. ( About 1 Km from Tamil Nadu check post - b/w  Thepakadu and check post) around 10 PM.

  2. Trekking

  3. Tasty south Indian food.

We would like to thank Greenwoods Nature camp again for the perfect organization of our trip. You made it unforgettable.

Deep Jungle Home place to enjoy nature at Its best
Mar 17, 2010 11:30 PM13469 Views

Myself along with 2 colleagues made a last moment plan on Friday evening to visit mudumalai / bandipur .since it was a week end we know there will be a shortage of rooms but we took a risk keeping in mind ooty is just 45 km from mudumalai and ooty is got sufficient lodges to accommodate the mass crowd . And left Bangalore by 2.30 pm after lunch.

We kept driving through the forest until we reached the mudumalai safari junction. At the forest department office we inquired if there were any accommodation available but unfortunately nothing was available . We decided to go to ooty on the way we found the sign board of jungle home right after the rto check post . We dropped into jungle home and the caretaker informed us that just one tent is available at the deep jungle home campus which is 2 kms off the highway.

We were too tired to drive down till ooty as settled for the tent that was available. The tent was cute and comfortable for three people to sleep since we had very little luggage we could manage easily.. We had to use common toilets that were eat and clean but lot of tin insects surrounding the light .

Hot fresh food was served for dinner. There were limited items on buffet. But quality of food was good .

After the dinner we could listen to strange calls of some animals in the jungle . The guard informed us that is was a alarm call that the sambar deer made . And this kind of call the deer make only when there are large cats around . With the information he provided we thought we are going to be lucky enough to spot a tiger or leopard .

With the powerful torch the guard had we tried looking around for the huge cat but cold not find any. Then the alarm call stopped and we went back to bed .and had a deep sleep. In the morning we got up early and the first sighting i was when i opened my eyes was a peacock grazing opposite to the tent . As soon as i came out of the tent it got scared and escaped out of sight . There were plenty of bird calls that i could listen . And the pleasant misty climate was great .

We were offered a free horse riding trip . We went around the campus on a horse . Fed the horse some grass .

Later we went to the dining hall for break fast . Got ready and started to ooty .

Greenwoods - Ideal place for wildlife enthusiasts
Jan 29, 2010 11:42 PM13085 Views

I got to know about Greenwoods from one of my friends who had great things to say about the location, stay and food. Coincidently just few days back, me and my group of 7 buddies were planning for something exciting in the first week of January. I had a look at the website' http://www.greenwoodsnaturecamp.com' and it had pretty much most of the details which we would have wanted. After making the booking and getting the confirmation, we started from Bangalore early on Saturday morning and reached Thorapalli around 11:45AM.

As informed, a staff from Greenwoods was waiting to pick us near the Thorappalli petrol station. He took us to the Greenwoods nature camp which was around 2 or 3 Kms from the NH. While we were about a km away from the camp, the tar road made way for kuccha road and the scenery around was simply amazing. Huge bamboo forests on 3 sides and me along with my friends were already impressed with the location.

We had a quick snap session enroute and reached Greenwoods around noon. The caretaker and the staff accompaning us gave a download of the itenary for the rest our stay along with safety instructions(Do's and Dont's while in forest). Though the manager did not speak a great english, one message was loud and clear, the nature and forest meant a lot to them and requested to be cognizant of the fact that we are in animals territory and we better not disturb them.

At 12:45, lunch was ready and we had a heartful(or should I say mouthful) lunch. After relaxing for 2 hours, we went to Thepakadu for a safari, visited elephant camp and were back to our base camp around 8PM.

We could see atleast 20 to 25 deers grazing just opposite to the nature camp. Our group decided to have dinner around 9PM and the food was pretty good. All of us retired to bed as the next days schedule started early in the morning(6 AM to be precise) for a trek.

The trek was very good and we were lucky to spot couple of bisons, lots of deers, peacock and a single tusker elephant. After 2 hours of trekking, rats were playing in everyones stomach. We hit the dining area, the movement we reached the camp. Felt like it was the best breakfast that we had, probably we did not starve so much in the recent past. Not discounting the taste of Ghee pongal that was served and to finish each of us had couple of fresh pineapple juice which was in the menu.

With all our great memories, we started back to bangalore at 11:30AM on Sunday. Overall I would recommened Greenwoods to my friends and its great value for money.
