If somebody ever doubts the power of literature to become a source of inspiration for revolution, I can say he/she hasn't read Mother by Maxim Gorky. A Heart touching story is been told with sharpest of words which penetrate reader's heart to bleed it till the humanity come out of him/her. No wonder it has inspired millions and millions in the last 100 plus years of existence. If Russian revolution was a beginning the book became a source for any kind of revolution which needs human sacrifice, good or bad. The merit of Mother is that even when it calls for bloodshed, in the spirit it remains peaceful. The philosophy of Maxim Gorky is that, "if you are to tear blood, it should be your blood and not the one of the enemy's with their blood, the mother earth will only get damaged but with your blood it will be flourished." That doesn't mean that you suffer humiliation.

What is holding people from joining revolution? Illiteracy, ignorance or is it fear? Maxim Gorky calls the suffering humanity to get enlightened by knowledge, courageous by faith, knowing the self and to become human by helping others to live in peace and justice. 'You use your brain before using your hand', Maxim Gorky says, and the book express the need of good literature. Literature that will enlighten the masses and that will move them for action. Mother seems shows the way and one light was enough though many followed. “Give me your help! Let me have books — such books that when a man has read them he will not be able to rest. Put a prickly hedgehog to his brains. Tell those city folks who write for you to write for the villagers also. Let them write such hot truth that it will scald the village, that the people will even rush to their death.”

“She is probably the first mother who has followed in the footsteps of her son — the first.”

Maxim Gorky's classic novel Mother shows us the foot prints they have traveled to make Russian peasants to the happier people as they are today. Illiterate, ignorant and suffering mother, she is the true representative of Mother Russia. Her husband used to beat her up. When he dies, her loving son, Pavel thought of acting like his father but in search of truth, humanity finds him and takes him to miles. He get into a revolutionary group and start learning and start spreading the revolution literature. The slave like life in the industrial colony was a perfect ground for breeding the revolution horses and they do give birth to many a running horse. Mother watches her son's deeds and gets attracted to it. She learns to read and write and then to understand their literature. Awareness made her eyes open and her son shows her the beauty of courage. When her son is been taken to jail, she acts as hands of her son, outside the jail. Beauty of Maxim Gorky books is the power of strong life saving messages in each turning page. "Mother" is a resource book for such quotes to encourage people for action. This is not done by simply calling revolutionary slogans but by reflecting life's truth before the reader.

The writing style of Gorky is simple and easily readable. The visual images he creates are fantastic. Too little words are been used to give vivid images to the reader's mind. Beauty! Then, the simplicity in description doesn't prevent him from giving out serious life lessons in it. The book reflect and debate Politics, Social Justice and religion in it. The discussion is based on equal distribution of wealth. My only point of discrepancy with Maxim Gorky's thought is that he is all focusing on the distribution of wealth where distribution of wealth is not the ultimate solution of solving the social problems, including poverty. Even when wealth distribution helps poor to recover for some time, to maintain the status the other factors too had to be repaired, including corruption, lawlessness, illiteracy, ignorance, lethargy etc. Without that distribution of wealth is only a temporary solution but it is a temporary solution.

The book worth a hundred books or more if we randomly take 100 plus books from the new generation. Means, the book is a must read. And yes, you can see the seed of 'Crime And Punishment' in this novel and no need to say Mahashweta Devi's 'Mother' too is inspired from it like many others. I am not elaborating the review, but just saying, 'go for it', which I hope, tells it all. Let me add some quotes from the book for the readers and for my future reference as well.

“There is no measure to the desires of man; and his power is inexhaustible,”

"Why must we go hungry when there is so much of everything? And how much intellect there is everywhere! Nevertheless, we must remain in stupidity and darkness."

“People live expecting some good, and if there’s nothing to expect, what sort of a life is it?”

“Don’t lie. This isn’t the city. No need of lies.”

"Our goal is far, far away, and the crown of thorns is near!"

"It’s easy to die — but let the people rise to life again! That’s a different thing! Let them rise up in rebellion!"

"if you keep adding copper bit by bit to a child’s food, you prevent the growth of its bones, and he’ll be a dwarf; and if from his youth up you poison a man with gold, you deaden his soul."

“My dear, how good it is when you know that light for all the people already exists in life, and that there will be a time when they will begin to see it, when they will bathe their souls in it, and all, all, will take fire in its unquenchable flames.”

“Don’t fly up into the air at once, Pavel! Your flight will knock you up against the belfry tower and break your wings,”

"Man is not a unit. It is God that makes him a unit, that makes him a round, circular thing. God always makes things round. Such is the earth and all the stars and everything visible to the eye. The sharp, angular things are the work of men."

“This fear is what is the ruin of us all. And some dominate us; they take advantage of our fear and frighten us still more. Mark this: as long as people are afraid, they will rot like the birches in the marsh. We must grow bold; it is time!"

"The church is destroyed, but God is immortal.”

“Ah, life! Five times in the day you laugh and five times you weep. All right. Well, are you through, Ignaty? Go to bed and sleep.”

“Fertilize me with seeds of reason and truth; I will return them to you a hundredfold.”

"She’s right when she says that the price a man has is according to his own estimate of himself — and this is an affair in which you must set a high value on yourself when once you take it up."

The Heart of a Mother
May 13, 2001 05:13 AM 8847 Views

(I am not going to review Maxim Gorky’s “MOTHER” since Venchasa has done it beautifully. As there is no slot for Mother's Day on MS, I have just taken the liberty of using ''Mother'' to pay my tribute to all the mothers of the world on Mothers Day-Today)

A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials, heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine, desert us when troubles thicken around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavour by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.

Mothers are angels on earth, always at hand to doctor scraped knees, boost dampened spirits, and guide us through the minor setbacks in life. They are models of inspirations, patient counsellors, and sterling examples. They must be everything to everybody.

The earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honour of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 1600's, England celebrated a day called ''Mothering Sunday&''. During this period England's poor, especially the children, worked as servants for the wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along to provide a festive touch. As Christianity spread throughout Europe the celebration changed to honour the ''Mother Church'' - the spiritual power that gave them life and protected them from harm. Over time the church festival blended with the Mothering Sunday celebration. People began honouring their mothers as well as the church.

In the United States Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe as a day dedicated to peace. Ms. Howe would hold organized Mother's Day meetings in Boston, Mass ever year. In 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. She started a compaign, writing to businessmen, politicians and other prominent leaders to establish a national Mother’s Day and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Mother's Day as a national holiday, to be held on 2nd Sunday of May.

While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times throughout the year, there are some countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium, which also celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May.

A poet once wrote:

A mother is someone to shelter and guide us,

to love us, whatever we do,

with a warm understanding and infinite patience

and wonderful gentleness, too.

How often a mother means swift reassurance

in soothing our small, childish fears,

how tenderly mothers watch over their children

and treasure them all through the years!

The heart of a mother is full of forgiveness

for any mistake, big or small,

and generous always in helping her family,

whose needs she has placed above all.

A mother can utter a word of compassion

and make all our cares fall away;

She can brighten a home with the sound of her laughter

and make life delightful and gay.

A mother possesses incredible wisdom

And wonderful insight and skill -

In each human heart is that one special corner

which only a mother can fill!

I just wonder why people in India have to celebrate Mother's Day, as billions of Indians, around the globe, very well know that in India every day is Mother's Day. If Indians want to imitate the West and celebrate the Mother's Day on the day Americans do who am I to dispute?

'' Down-and out''classic

With Mothers day (May 13th) in just one day, it is the time of commemoration and celebration of Mom.

Maxim Gorky’s ‘Mother’ is one of my favorite books which I re-read recently.

Here is why I like this book : “

''In the evening, when the sun was setting and red rays languidly glimmered upon the windows of the houses ,the factory ejected its people like burned-out ashes ,and again they walked through the streets ,with black, smoke covered faces, radiating the sticky odor of machine oil, and showing the gleam of hungry teeth, but now there is animation in their voices ,and even gladness.

The servitude of hard toil was over for the day. Supper awaited them at home , and respite ''

Mother, Maxim Gorky, pg1.

Gorky made his reputation as a teller of “down-and-out” tales, describing the dregs of society in his works. When Gorky wrote about the travails of the lower classes, he spoke from experience. He himself had worked in a series of menial jobs earlier in life which served as the models for several of his stories.

Mother was based on actual events: a demonstration by factory workers near Nizhni Novgorod. The “mother” is Pelageya Nilovna, widow of a boorish factory worker, and the action in the novel is generally seen through her eyes. Her son, Pavel Vlassov, is the leader of a Social Democratic circle among the workers. The first part of the book describes the mother’s increasing affinity with the ideology of her son and the radical group which gathers at their house. Nilovna’s love for her son and the force of his ideas convinces her to support the revolutionary cause.

The second part of the book takes place after Pavel is arrested for leading a May Day demonstration, and the mother goes to live with a fellow revolutionary. She volunteers to smuggle radical booklets into the factory and to peasants in the countryside, becoming a full-fledged member of the radical group.

In the end, Pavel is tried and sentenced to exile in Siberia for his actions. The novel closes with Nilovna being beaten to death by police while attempting to smuggle copies of her son’s defense speech.

The moral character and support Gorky extended for the revolution was manifested in “The Mother”. She became representative mother country calling and supporting her children fighting for their rights.

In the workers township men work till their bodies are completely tired, drink and beat up their wives and children to sublimate their frustration - Mother represent the life of working class people in soviet union.

The events created and the detailed explanation of the backdrop in which the events occur represents creative and poetic story telling capabilities of Gorky. By the example of his work and life and by his literary critcism Gorky exerted a profound influence on Soviet thought .

As Russia once again confronts tremendous social turbulence, the lessons of the early part of this century are particularly informative. In an era when an absurd playwright can become the President of a newly-democratized Eastern European nation, we cannot afford to overlook the value of literature in influencing perceptual patterns and official policies. Gorky responded to perceived injustices in the society, and yet his work can be interpreted as prescriptive rather than purely reactive.

Literature represents much more than a pristine chronicle of a particular time and place, it occupies a unique position at the nexus of past and future realities.

If you like serious literature ,and want to read how to potray the social history in a contemporary literary work –this is the best book to read.
