Mid-Day Reviews

Nothing but a gossip magazine!
Feb 27, 2002 09:46 AM 5746 Views

Mid-Day....first and foremost, I have to agree that this paper brought a revolution. They brought gimmicks in the world of newspapers. What hurts is that the gimmicks WORKED! I always believed that newspapers are supposed to primarily give news- and that too with an unbiased attitude. Mid-day broke all such norms. I must accept that initially I liked it! I have always liked anything going against the current. But gradually this paper started drifting away from its primary job. Today its normal that when the budget is declared, this paper has a rikshawala hitting the headlines for the interior of his rikshaw. Crosswords, comic strips, filmi gossip, parties of the biggies, Mid-day Mates, advertisements etc. cover up a major part of this so called NEWS-paper.

One more thing that strikes you is the lack of homework that the Midday staff so conveniently achieves. I remember that the whole of Mumbai was in sorrow when we lost the great Marathi author P.L.Deshpande. Each and every newspaper had extensive coverage abt the great man. And then comes MId-Day, published by kids posing as mature journalists, and no coverage. To be fair to them, there was a small section generously given to this great man in one of the inside pages. Mumbai was in sorrow, and that was the way Midday responded....wonder why they have that punchline- ''Midday is Mumbai''!! For people who may think I am cribbing abt it cos PL was my idol....lets flashback! Bal Thakeray uttered some words against the legend P.L.Deshpande, and the whole of Maharashtra rose against the Sena Supremo. Midday was gossipping abt this for more than a week.

Last month, there was this write up about Pandit Jasraj. And some smart journalist had confidently printed a photograph of the great singer. Great Singer he was....only problem was that the snap was of Pt.Bhimsen Joshi. Only Midday can set such standards of carelessness!

The problem with this paper is that some important announcement by the CM will be in some corner in the inside pages, whereas the front page will have the CM's son's debut in films. The news about some ''timepass item'' takes precedence over the more serious topics. All this thanks to the highly irresponsible journalists who believe that their sole purpose in learning journalism is to gossip in public. The Midday team, sadly, does not understand the importance of the printed word. They have made a toy of the press media, and play as they want. A pack of Idiots!

In all fairness though, Midday has succeeded in attracting many readers, and is definitely the most sold paper, at least in Mumbai. Just goes to show that in today's world, any gimmick is ethical as long as it pulls in the moolah!

TTP (Total Time Pass)

Mid-Day has been around for years now. It is perhaps the only eveninger (afternooner nowadays - available at 10:30 a.m.) thats so popular with people. The reason though is not the news.

Mid-Day is the kind of tabloid that can be read according to the time you have in hand. You can finish off your Mid-Day in a 5 minute tea break or in 40 minutes of local train travel.

Mid-Day is also perhaps the most colourful and snazzy newspapers in town. In fact you could call it a gossip magazine for all sexes that comes everyday at a very affordable price.

Mid-Day never excited anybody for the news, it has always been famous for job seeking for some or for the want of entertainment info in Mumbai and the exciting offers that it runs every season.

Well sometimes though the Mid-Day has given me great knowledge about my own city, there is one thing for sure, they do know the city of dreams really well. Well, if they didn't it wouldn't be the best selling eveninger in town.

The clinchers for Mid-Day though are the 3rd page Mid-Day Mate and my personal favourite - The crossword page.

''Really yehi hai Mumbai meri jaan''

Good for reading in locals
Jan 10, 2002 07:57 PM 5640 Views

In the segment of afternoon dailies Mid Day is the ruler and there is hardly an alternative for it. The Times of India which is considered a competitor is basically a morning daily and is usually consumed at home or office, where as Mid Day is usually consumed in Trains and in after noons. About 8.58 lac persons read Mid Day, of which more than half also read The Times of India. The Times of India is read by 15.29 lac readers, so as such there is no competition at all.

Maximum number of readers of Mid Day lie in the age group of 15-34 whereas TOI readers are spread evenly across all age groups.

Disgusting!!
Dec 04, 2001 04:08 PM 7438 Views

Mid-Day is among the most popular afternoon daily in Mumbai. But my personal opinion about Mid-Day is not something that would make its addict happier.

First of all what the common man needs when he purchase a afternoon daily. Most of the news is directly taken from Afternoon newspaper. They do have many columnists writing for them but the subject chosen by them is totally weird and is of no use to citizen of Mumbai.

Half of the paper is filled by stupid advertisement and TV program schedule, and than there is semi-nude pic just on the third page “Mid-Day Mate”. Till today I am not able to figure out the aim of all the Mid-Day mate. Can anyone explain it to me? The Crossword section is also which needs some urgent changes.

The only thing that makes this newspaper sell is lack of competition from other Afternoon dailies.

I feel instead of purchasing these rubbish dailies we should use the Internet medium for regular updates around the world.

Bad Version Of Mid-Day.
Jul 25, 2001 03:49 PM 9262 Views

I had heard a lot about the online version of Mid-Day - Chalo Mumbai AND I thought of giving it a try. It took 8 minutes and 3 refreshes in order to download completely and this was on a broadband connection. I wonder if people using 56k connection even get to view the page.

Once the page has loaded, the columns to the left are not organized at all. It is supposed to be a NEWS-Info site and the very first topic of the column is 'Bollywood'. The next few are not pleasing either being 'Bombay Basics', 'Eating Out' etc. What if I am looking for breaking news? What about archives? There are huge banner ads on the top of teh page which makes the time to load the page higher. The columns to teh left were not organized and I felt lost after I visited the site. All the site offers is some breaking news which I can easily find on other faster sites. Update the layout ChaloMumbai or you can only dream of being as popular as the paper version.

Daily Opium
Jun 29, 2001 01:26 AM 5571 Views

Midday and later the Afternoon was started as the City newspaper to cater to specific news/views of Mumbai hitting the pavements in Mumbai by 12.00 noon. As any paper catering to local news, for and by the locals is bound to create some base for itself it found ready acceptability with the readers. Some of the star writers and editors like Busybee further enhanced the readability of the paper. Also commuters of the local trains found some reading material to while away during the long monotonous journey. To the credit of the paper it did not turn to yellow journalism to increase the circulation and the Midday mate was ever so harmless which did not offend the normal Mumbaiker. Then like any addiction it became like your daily dose, whether you find it interesting or not in goes the hand into the pocket for Rs 2.00 for your daily fix.

To say sab Bakwas is being too harsh Rs 2.00 for the daily opium is a small price in this place called MUMBAI.

ChaloMumbai.com a Product of Mid-day Publications, as if the Mid-Day torture was not enough they came up with Chalomumbai.com

Navigation:

There is no consistency in designing of the site. Navigation on Chalomumbai.com is like searching for Veerapan in the vast jungle. It took me more than a week to know that they even have mail services for the user, so my curiosity got better of me and I clicked on New User link to register for their mail services, just to check the mail speed in comparison with rediff. The registration page itself took more than 3 min to download.

The Color of the Font is very deceptive. They are using same Font Color for text as well as for the Links.

Content:

The heart and soul of the site is its content, but ChaloMumbai has no heart and soul. The contents are rarely updated. The Headlines News is duplicate copy that they have on Mid-Day newspaper.

There are some useless features like Ponnappa, Photo Essay that one would never like to visit.

There is no way one can contact them through Phone or mail to report any bugs.

Need some quality changes to able to survive in today's world..

Nobody (un)covers Mumbai like they do!
Jun 18, 2001 11:14 AM 2115 Views

For thousands of office-goers who have to spend an hour or so while standing in a local train compartment, getting pushed and jostled all the time, Mid-Day make life bearable.

I have bought it off the newsstands several times a week for years together. My only problem is that the news vendors don't deliver it at home -- so I miss it on Saturdays (usually).

Why do I like it? It's writing style is straightforward and simple, easy to understand, contains very few difficult words. It gives news items from the suburbs of Mumbai, which the morning newspapers often ignore. And it has columns by Rahul Singh, Tavleen Singh, Abhay Mokashi, and others which are quite interesting. What more can anyone ask?

Nobody covers Mumbai like they do!
Feb 26, 2001 03:43 PM 2784 Views

Mid Day is one of the major newspapers in Mumbai. Apart from being one of the most popular newspapers in Mumbai, it has the highest readership in Mumbai after Times of India. But it does have that extra something, that manages to beat TOI. There has been a lot of controversy about the Mid-Day Mate in the past few months. I will discuss these and many other things in my review.

NEWS

Mid Day is very good when it comes to delivering the latest news because of the 4 editions (First Edition, City Edition, Late City edition and Final Edition) it prints in a day. But the minus point is, that apart from the first few pages, and the headlines, the rest of the paper is almost the same.

The news articles are interesting to read and are in simple language. The information provided is in depth. One plus point is that Mid Day gives lots of news on day-to-day incidents, accidents, and crime that takes place in the city everyday. TOI has more news about political issues and they miss out on such important news. Mid Day does not have a lot of news on political issues. But looking at the political instability of our government and the corrupt politicians, I would restrain from reading such news, and that is the area the Mid Day scores in.

SPORTS NEWS

The Sports News coverage is very good and probably the best. They are not one-sided like TOI, and don't give unlimited news of cricket. They have good coverage of Tennis, Football, Formula 1 and Badminton. And what about the Local sports news? Mid Day IS KNOWN for Local Sports news and gives a lot of encouragement to the local heroes!

SUNDAY MID DAY

Sunday is a day for relaxation, away from the hectic life of the city. So, to wake up in the morning and read Sunday Mid Day is a pleasure. It does not contain a lot of news but has a lot of fun, gossip and humour. With supplements like Lifestyle, etc. you enjoy reading the recipes and articles. You also have two columns of jokes. The T.V. program guide given with the List is very helpful.

SUPPLEMENTS

Mid Day scores high on supplements. With daily supplements like The List and Surfboard.net, it provides you with a lot of good info. The T.V. programs' guide printed in the List is very accurate and has program schedules of all the popular as well as the less-popular channels.

Formerly, Surfboard was given as a supplement but now it is printed as a section of the paper itself. But they now focus a lot on their own website, chalomumbai.com, and don't many of us know how poor the website is.

Recently, it introduced a new supplement- the Mid-Day Buyer's guide. It has all the information you need to purchase a product, mostly electronics. It is very good and interesting to read.

Another very good supplement is Funday, which comes along with Saturday's edition of Mid Day.

There are other supplements like the Big Break, too. Sunday Mid Day has good supplements like Lifestyle.

DAILY COLUMNS 1/2

Mid Day and Sunday Mid Day have many columns written by authors as well as their daily sections like VOICES, The Buck stops here, Mailbag, etc. Among the authors are Shobha De, Arvind Kala, Anil Thakraney, Pinto and others. They all write very good articles and are always precise and frank. You can express your views and opinions in VOICES and Mailbag, and explain problems in your area to K C Srivastava, the municipal commissioner.

Apart from these, you also have columns by Cyrus Broacha, Chaitanya Padukone, Narendra Kusnur, etc on the film industry, and movie and music reviews by Deepa Gahlot and UJ.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Mid Day is really better than TOI in advertising. TOI has 3-4 advertisements on almost every page. Mid Day does not go beyond the limits. The rates too are just right.

CLASSIFIEDS 1/2

Mid Day has one of the largest classifieds, but it is very clogged up. But you can manage to get the required details you need.

FUN & GOSSIP

The cartoons published in Mid Day are very good. Ponnappa, Broadside and Reverse Sweep by Austin are very funny.

The column 'Jest Like That' (3rd page) has a new joke everyday, but most of them are copied from the 'Laugh Lines' column printed in Sunday Mid-Day. On the other hand, 'Laugh Lines' has good and original jokes. The List serves as a good medium for gossip.

ASTROLOGY

This is one plus point of Mid Day that no other paper can beat. Who can forget the column on astrology by Marjorie Orr? Marjorie is a renowned astrologer around the world and her predictions are very accurate. She also gives predictions on the year ahead of you if its your birthday. I always read her predictions and I find them to be very correct.

MID DAY MATE

I got confused when I had to rate the Mate. After all, how do you rate a semi-naked girl? There has been a lot of controversy about the Mate, known famously as the Page 3 girls. The original idea was started by The Sun which first published a skimpily clad girl on the 3rd page. Since then, many papers have tried to start printing such pictures, including Mid Day. In spite of so many complaints sent to Mid Day to restrain from printing these photos, they still continue to do so.

The Mate has been a plus point as well as a minus point for Mid Day. Some people PURCHASE Mid Day only for the mate, whereas others DON'T PURCHASE Mid Day only because of the mate. Many may feel that this is a wrong way of gaining popularity, but Mid Day is also losing popularity. Mid day is too good a paper to print the Mate to gain popularity and readership.

The Bottom Line

Mid Day is a very good paper. It has a very good size, which is ideal for a newspaper. The size suits the office-going people who travel in buses and trains and buy a newspaper to read. TOI's paper size is too big. The quality of the paper and the pictures is good. The best thing about Mid Day is that it follows a very good format. There are certain columns that are so good, that people purchase Mid Day for that very column.

The best thing about Mid Day is that they don't get afraid of taking risks, and don't hesitate in introducing new things in their paper. For instance, take the new look and format of the paper for its 22nd Anniversary. They tried something new, and it worked out for them. On the other hand, other papers stick to the same thing, and people do get bored to see the same thing again and again.

The List is a very good supplement and provides enough gossip. I cannot comment a lot on the Mate as many people see it as a plus whilst many see it as a minus. I think a poll should be held and if more people oppose the printing of the Mate, then they should stop printing it.

P.S.- Excellent Very GoodGoodAverage *Poor

Mid-Day = Mumbai (!?)
Feb 26, 2001 10:00 AM 4902 Views

The heading captioned by me is quite an exaggeration; however, most friends would agree with the similarity. Amongst the dailies Mid-Day covers Mumbai like nobody else. For serious articles on national and international news there are various other dailies. This popular afternoon publication is sensational, sometimes bold & daring, youthful, catchy and has something for all the readers. The classifieds sections in the Mid-Day is perhaps as exhaustive as the ToI, a remarkable feat for such a young publication. That is one yardstick to benchmark the popularity of this daily.

The paper is by and large neutral and has an impartial coverage of news. Since it is an late morning / afternoon publication and targets a sizeable circulation among Mumbai’s suburban rail commuters, the paper has a racy style of presentation, which is a welcome contrast to the presentation format of the morning dailies. That is where it scores another point in popularity. I feel this refreshing style and format was instrumental in wiping out traditional rivals like “Evening News of India” of ToI. Another popular section is the one on kids and special supplement ''List'' on events of Mumbai.

The grievances redressal column for the hapless citizen is another good section in the paper.

The dynamism of the management is reflected in other language editions (Gujarathi for e.g.) and also editions in other Indian metros.

Negative points!

Very bold, screaming headlines – the size of the headlines simply encroach on the news material. Some sense of proportion needs to be maintained.

Page 3 “Mid-Day mate” is another eyesore. (I also feel wholly unnecessary since models featured in some news photographs put to shame these ''Mid-Day mates''). But this may be unavoidable considering the publication’s apprehension of losing a considerable section of loyal readers!

They can do well to improve upon their colour sections to match the quality of other Indian publications like the Hindu, IE etc.

On the whole a good daily.

In short Mid-Day has lots of parallels to good ol' Mumbai:

Racy, Colourful, Irreverent, Irrelevant at times and yes goodness hidden in a lot of trash!

MID-DAY OR MID-DAYMATE
Feb 23, 2001 06:58 PM 4346 Views

Information is the essence of life. Yes indeed without information, how are you going to survive. Whether it is Internet, or Television or Print Media. Looking at the growing need of the population and the time lab between one half of your day and the second half of your day, there is need to get the information pretty quick and fast.

After the surge of Internet, no doubt people still buy the morning newspaper, but there has been sharp fall on the afternoon & the evening dailies. The quality of the Newspaper are definitely fallen as we have seen at MS, lot have been spoken about the TOI.

Its really growing with the time, company’s let it be in any field, they really start taking consumer for granted. Same thing has happened to Newspapers. The Quality of paper are absolutely fallen with more advertisement than News.

Mid-day.

Mumbai’s most famous afternoon daily. I don’t know what should I call this a Entertainment daily or Classifieds daily. One of the members had spoken about TOI that they are showing nice beautiful models to lure the young crowd.

What does MID-day has to sell, yes the MID-Mate. I have seen guys waiting to get the first edition of Mid-day which arrives at 10.00, is that mid-day or shall we call it late-morning.

I really wont call it a newspaper because it has really less of news and more of advertisements and entertainment stuff. I agree that, it has got local news, which they do try to cover extensively but recently, that also has reduced.

Classifieds

This one section is really covered well. But they know how to mess up things. The walk-in-section was really mis-managed by MID-DAY. We had recently given an advertisement for the walk-in-interviews for my company. These guys really messed it up with no date, time and place of the Interview. Now can you believe this. Imagine the image of our company going down like anything, because people kept calling the hotel and asking for the time of interview. No doubt we had to postpone the entire schedule, but the image gone is gone. People wont trust the company anymore. Because of this we went really 1 week behind the schedule.

So don’t even think of placing an advertisement on the walk-in section Mid-day, if you are placing an ad then make it sure that, you make your person sit at the mid-day office till the advertisement is printed.

Sports

This is one section they cover really well with more local, school sports covered. This really encourages the kids playing their heart out and next day looking at their pictures being printed in a newspaper.

They have covered the school football really well. Give full marks on that.

Entertainment

As I said earlier they are good in delivering Entertainment news. It’s a good time pass for the Mumbai crowd in a local train working on some of the crosswords, reading the juicy gossips and the most important which I can’t forget Horoscope by Majorie.

So Mid-day has got online presence too, with a pathetic site called chalomumbai.com. Its good to see apun ka Pandu, as their logo.

But what’s the point when you loose the essence of the real stuff. When you promote your self as a newspaper why don’t they concentrate on the News. That what happens when you put your leg on everything?

I am recommending this paper just for 2 things one is promoting the Local sports and secondly for the brain teasers for the fast paced, Mumbai crowd who travel on local trains.(But I doubt whether they must be getting place to even stand on the train forget reading newspaper)

Of crosswords,comics, horoscopes
Feb 21, 2001 09:24 PM 3088 Views

Mid-day, is a paper that serves as only time pass, and some sensational headlines, that too sometimes. Otherwise it is just loud. What it serves best is raddi, what with so many advertisemnts etc. The only reason most folks buy mid-day is for TP. On the return home from the office, if one is lucky to get a seat, then they take it to solve the crossword, or read comics or the Marjorie Orr column. Frankly, other than that, there is hardly anything else. What mid-day does is that it makes lot of moolah, with different editions throughout the day. Its first edition comes at around 10 am ( hardly mid-day that), and then we have different editions.

Its waste of good money

Not at all like original Mid-Day
Jan 07, 2001 03:22 AM 3182 Views

When I first heard that Mid-Day's portal was ChaloMumbai.com, I was really frustrated and depressed(you know not depressed depressed). This is because Mid-Day's previous site had content organization. Also, correct me if I am wrong at saying that Mid-Day is a NEWSPAPER AND CARRIES LATEST HEADLINES. But on their website, you are greeted with all these unwelcomed faces of people(not any personal attack) because one comes expecting to read news and recent developments in headlines. Also, the new site is way too slow and I really wish Mid-Day replans their whole e-strategy and diffrentiate their daily newspaper from their ChaloMumbai.com 'Entertainment' portal.

Good news daily
Dec 29, 2000 08:12 PM 1940 Views

Mid-day is a good news paper and is very popular in mumbai. its news are on latest happenings all over the world. the columns inside are also very much informative e.g. on e-commerce.

it is all the news about films, sports and the current political situations.

the sunday midday is more informative as there are more columns and articles on the special subjects.

the fun pages for kids are also the best.

crossword is also good.

i like this afternoon daily much and i'm regular reader of it's online version.

Best afternoon newspaper.
Dec 23, 2000 08:08 PM 3792 Views

Mid Day is a best afternoon newspaper. It covers all happenings of the mumbai. Mid Day has a special copies on Saturdays, for the kids, all the contests, competition etc. It has a different pages for sports, news etc, which makes more easy for a person to read.

Mid Day is very popular all over the Mumbai. It is used in most of the offices etc. Afternoon is the another newspaper of the afternoon, is also a good newspaper but not as good as Mid Day is.

All my points are proved by the MidDay's slogan, 'No One Covers Mumbai Like We Do'.

Excellent Newspaper.

Mid-day is confused!!!
Nov 24, 2000 05:06 AM 2401 Views

An excellent newspaper with breaking news from Bombay, they had a good website previously called as https://midday.com.

But now they have changed their name to https://chalomumbai.com and believe me its so pathetic ( might me harsh, but pathetic is the right word ).

I use to read Midday everyday in Bombay, Now when I am out of india, the website is the only source of news and information about bombay, and they went ahead and messed up their website.

The mid-day management is very confused as to they should have a portal or a news site.

Believe me Mid-day waloon, you guys should learn from Afternoon ( https://cybernoon.com ).

Here is an honest suggestion, have your portal website but seperate the portal and the news site.

Excellent newspaper... bad website
Nov 11, 2000 11:32 AM 2644 Views

Mid-day itself is a very good newspaper. It gets published daily in the afternoon with breaking news. It also has good contests in which you can win prizes and is also filled with challenging brain teasers. The website for Mid-Day is really spoiled, however. It gives a bad impression of the newspaper. First of all, I see no reason they should have changed the name to ChaloMumbai and second of all, they have made this site into a portal instead of a site with only news... like Times of India. I think their web developers should take a lesson from the Times of India team;-)
