Mid Day Turns YUMPI!
Apr 22, 2007 11:31 PM11210 Views

*(Note: My review is a bit long. but do read it in full to get an inkling of the rot that has set in).

Just when people had written off any kind of alliance or tie up between the Times Group & Mid Day, we get to hear this!

Ravi Dhariwal, Executive Director of Bennett Coleman, and Tariq Ansari, Managing Director of MiD DAY Multimedia, made the following joint statement in Mumbai: ‘The Times of India, with its leadership position in the morning broadsheet market and MiD DAY, with a successful formula for the middle-of-the day, are in fact complementary players. With this alliance we will endeavour to garner a larger market share of both readers and advertising in major metros of the country’.

For the complete story, check out this link:

https://mid-day.com/news/city/2006/december/148260.htm

Exhibit 19 on https://mediaha.blogspot.com/ posted on March 01, 2005 had fuelled rumours that the Times Group might up its stake in Mid Day. With the kind of financial powerhouse that the Times is - I guess, this too isn't much far away.

*Scroll down a bit more - Exhibit number 11 on mediaha says:

Apology

This refers to the item ‘Times to tie up with Reuters for news. Name and last-minute hiccup over Sunil Lulla appt to be resolved’ that appeared on Mediaah! on Thursday, February 10, 2005.We have received a legal notice from Mr Rajnish M Singh, Advocate, on behalf of his client, Bennett, Coleman & Co Ltd, saying that the item harmed the reputation and goodwill of his client. That was not the intent of the news item and not the intent of Mediaah! In his letter, Mr Singh has also said that the item is totally baseless and has no substance or truth in it.While Mediaah! would stand by the information published, Mediaah! apologises to Bennett, Coleman & Co Ltd and has deleted the above mentioned item with immediate effect.

And I was thinking'Times Now' is a tie up between Times & Reuters(sic).

The mission statement of the Times Group reads, "We are in the business of aggregating and delivering customers to our advertisers." I keep getting this feeling that strategic or non-strategic, commercialisation and profit-making are gaining credence over everything else within the media domain. So, what do we expect next? I guess this:

*Exhibit Three

*Thursday, January 01, 2004

Shocker! Times to allow advertising on edit page and sell Medianet Buoyed by the response the main edit page article on Aventis that The Times of India carried earlier this year, the newspaper has taken a dramatic decision of allowing advertising on its edit page as well as allowing Medianet to get active with some of the content on the page.

*Can it get any murkier? I felt we should now expect the Gen-Next of Advertorials - any guesses?

Just when I was wondering.the news came along today. Recently, .Mid Day organised an orientation seminar for its employees . and expectedly. the presentation was given by a representative from The Times Group.

All the reporters, editors. were . to focus all their news gathring and editing abilities on gettingYUMPI news features. i.e., Young Urban Mobile Professional across India. This is their target audience. the ones with the highest disposable income level.

When one of the reporters enquired whether all stories had to be focussed around this one concept. the answer was. Yes! Tailor all your stories to fit into this segment. only 200 word stories. What if the story isn't based on this perspective.then either reshape it to fit into this slot or. dump it.

You might say. this is simply a good marketing strategy by a business house. after all they are running a business. I agree. In fact, it actually is a shrewd marketing strategy. but the only thing that pains me is that. why . why. why all this in the name of Journalism?

A senior Journalist has aptly described what TOI(and now MID DAY) are doing . as "sheer prostitution of Journalism" . and its a sad moment for all present and future Journalists.  Dare I say "Journalism is dead. Long live PR(Journalism)"?

As an after thought. was just wondering. can it get any more worse.?*

Stop Unethical Advt
Nov 17, 2006 01:07 PM10870 Views

Dear All

I know mid-day is popular news paper now a days. Any news paper should take Advertisment which are Rational for the society.

Now a days we can read so many ads under entertainments & beauty parlour Heading. This are not the thing which a good news paper should promote. Definately they would say we generate income by printing this ads but somewhere they should be accountable for.

I can give an Example where such Ads used to come in Gujarat Samachar some years back. But due to reader unhappiness [ Since it is kind of family news paper and everyone reads the news paper ] about such unethical Ads , Gujarat Samachar has stopeed accepting such advt . Now you will not find such Advt in that paper.

Also they should really go in detail of any advt which gives kind of guarantee in medical treatment like Hair fall or HIV. People assume that since it came in news paper so treatment must be effective.

What do you say?

Terrorism in India
Jul 19, 2006 01:29 PM2843 Views

Long back we Indians are worst sufferers of Pak sponsored terrorism.Every Government’s chief always used to repeat the same words that we will crush the terrorism and issues warning to Pakistan Government and they deny. In the recent, President Parvez Musharraf not only denied of allegations but also offered his government’s help in investigating the Mumbai blasts 7/11.Unfortunately our PM was also made an attempt that G8 countries should name Pakistan in the terror attack on the same but they denied and given a simple reference of this attack in which more than 200 innocent people were killed and thousands wounded.

We do often blame Pakistan for running terrorist camps but now we have to add Bangla Desh in the same platform, though LTTE had sought pardon in Rajiv Gandhi assassination and accepted it’s full involvement but it was just for their own benefit and rightly our government had denied pardon.

When in past China and Pakistan attacked on us our military fought with patriotism and given befitting reply. Whole nation was standing behind our defense forces and I do remember that Indian ladies without any hitch given their jewelry, cash and our youth were so eager to join Indian forces to fight. Our countrymen were fighting with Indian forces with in itself in India because enemy was visible on border.

Now we take the case of terrorism which came to India in 1980 in a short package in Kashmir. It took new height when we freed hard core terrorist in exchange the then Home Minister’s daughter Rubia Sayeed. The again we not only released but our minister had gone to Afghanistan for the exchanged for our air passengers.

Once in an Indian movie I heard a dialogue from a Pakistani General that he need not to send him men to die because local men for terrorist activities are easily on sale. Just throw money and dogs will do terrorism against their country.

And what’s wrong in it. When our forces fight against enemy country our whole nation stands to give them moral support but in case of terrorism, where are the same countrymen. It appears that we are used to such an terrorist activities, but go and see a single family who had lost it’s dear one in terrorist attack. Media takes 3-4 day days for their TRP rating boost and after some time we again forget it.

The solution to this problem is that people are hesitant for being vigilant around themselves. And secondly if they are vigilant, they don’t trust Police to inform, an unfriendly Police.

There should be a Platform where our people if see any suspicious person or group in their locality, should dial a single toll free number attached to PM office/Chief Security Advisor or any responsible electronic media. I have not taken the name of CM office because their loyalty towards our country is still doubtful. Take for instance where Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav had given clean chit to SIMI and their government is trying to take back the criminal case against SIMI terrorists in UP. The same terrorist organization banned by central government. The same may be the case of Tamil Nadu in case of LTTE,ULFA in Assam etc.

We Indians should be aware an office of internal security on we can trust and that is the only solution that one day when we will trust our government in real sense and not on their crocodile tears, we will certainly be getting ourselves free from the clutches of Terrorism.

Sarita - Musical Marvel
Apr 14, 2006 06:55 PM4614 Views

Sarita - Musical Marvel

Her name may not instantly ring a bell but in the hindi film music circle she has her foot firmly entrenched. Sarita Madhav is undeniably a brilliant singer with a mellifluous vocal chord that can be flexed according to the mood of the compositions. At a recent music concert in Las Vegas she enthralled the audience with her brilliant rendition and was lauded by the young and the old alike. Hailing from Gwalior Sarita has to her credit the distinction of winning 7 consecutive episodes of Zee TVS Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. She came to Mumbai around 9 years ago to fulfill her dream of making a name for herself in the musical firmament. Starting off by doing private shows in and around mumbai she got her major break when she was spotted by musicologist and vintage poineer Manohar Iyer. Thoroughly impressed with her singing and voice quality Iyer inducted Sarita in his much acclaimed music troupe 'Keep Alive' which is an enviable achievement for any singer. Today Sarita has become an intergral part of the group. Well known writer and the pasha of publicity Bunny Reuben says '' Sarita's singing deserves special mention because apart from possessing a melodious voice she invests the right amount of feelings in her rendition. Another hallmark is her diction and pronunciation is perfect and clear. Unlike many other female singers she doesnt indulge in gimmicks and reproduces each number exactly like the original version ''. In the last 9 years Sarita has to her credit more than 700 stage shows in india and countries like America, Australia and Dubai. She has also lent voice for umpteen private recordings both in Hindi and Marathi. There may be countless other female singers who perform on stage but what makes Sarita special and most sought after is her repertoire. She can flawlessly render immortal compositions composed by legendary music directors like Khemchand Prakash, Anil Biswas, Pankaj Mullick, Naushad, Shyam Sundar, Hansraj Bahal, Husanlal Bhagatram, Roshan, Sajjad Hussain, Vinod, Ghulam Mohammed, C.Ramchandra, S.D.Burman, Vasant Desai, Shankar Jaikishan, O.P.Nayyar among others. She can also sing eternal favourites like 'Aayega aanewala', 'Seene mein sulagte hain armaan', 'Yaad rakhna chand taron', 'woh toh Chale gaye', Kat thi ab toh zindagi, Balma bada naadan' and several rare nuggets of the 40's 50's and 60's or evergreen classics like 'Mera naam chin chin chu', 'Lara lappa', 'Gore gore o banke chore', 'Aaj kal tere mere pyar ke charche' and 'Dil tera diwana hai sanam' with the right amount of punch and joi-de-vivre. However her all time favourite singer is melody queen Lata Mangeshkar whom she worships. '' Listening to Lataji's songs is in itself riyaaz for buding singers like us. Even if we manage to do 1 percent of what Lataji has achieved we should consider ourselves fortunate.'' she says. She religiously does her daily riyaaz and is extremely dedicated to her art. Another great quality about her is that she is that respects other singers and is down to earth and very humble. With her good looks, smart personality. affable nature, pleasant stage presence and above unfilching devotion towards music there is no doubt that Sarita will reach great heights in the years to come...........

Here we go again! What’s in a name mid-day? AS most of you would be thinking that it is only the mid-day news then it is wrong…it is not only the mid-day news but also the Late Night news…Late Night? Yes…Mid –day has the news of Football matches played at 11:00 pm IST across Europe, This is what I mean by Late night.

Now lets have a look at each category of Mid-day:

!) Front Page:

The Front page is the most important page as people get the first impression on the news paper… If the front page is good then people enjoy reading the other articles inside and if the front page is not good then people read the first page and keep turning the next pages…

@) Mid-day Mate:

Don’t take me wrong but this is what all youngsters are looking for and even when I am reading the newspaper and while turning the pages when I come across this I don’t feel shy in giving it a glance but only just as other news are there on the same page…

#) Born Today:

This is a new edition to the news paper and it is not a bad one as it informs us about the birthday of any person, be it Sharukh or Lex Luger.

$) Hit List:

This is also a new edition and all the filmi gupshup is done on this page.So overall this is also a hit edition…It cover all the film news and no wonder then it is read all over. Then comes ask Diana…She helps the problems of individual who are into a relationship and gives them tips on how to maintain or get into relationship

%) It’s a Mad World

It really is! This is a sort of a humorous page and it proves the Title given to it “A mad World”..

^)Sports

Sports section of Mid-day is one of the best if not the best…That’s the reason why I start reading the newspaper from the sports section…The football news is what I look for in any newspaper and mid-day does not disappoint. It covers the news from Cricket to football and from Football to Hockey and from Hockey to Moto GP and from Moto GP to F1, what more now?

I have rated mid-day very highly and I have been reading mid-day since I was 13 and now I am 15 ;), so now for two years I have had a good experience reading mi-day and hope you’ll all have had the same experience..

The website needs some more thinking but otherwise there is no default according to me…

Please rate the review and post comments and help me improve.

The mid day scandal -- another point of view
Dec 19, 2004 06:46 PM8246 Views

The Editor of Midday Bombay has been booked for publishing the picture of Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor kissing.

The English media in India has solidly stood behind Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor (they are not married, despite of the common surname), citing the right to privacy. Suddenly the press seems all mature and responsible.

However, this unanimous support by the English media (especially by the various news channels funded by western money) is more because it sees this event as a threat to its agenda of bringing in the 'sexual' mores of the west into India ? of course without the need for a debate or discussion. However, this event gives an opportunity to question the media.

Of course, what the midday newspaper has done is tried to boost its own sales by publishing such photographs. This is not a noble deed in itself. But, before anyone, even the supreme court, charges it with obscenity, they should look at the kind of stuff they publish daily in newspapers that everyone from children to adolescents read daily.

Half-naked women and men in sexual poses ----- whether it is HT or Times of India or any other newspaper, no one stops to think once about the kind of effect they will have on the young people. Should we really blame the Delhi school kids for the MMS clip sex scandal. They are what we have made them.

As far as kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor are concerned, if they really kissed like that in public, their act is itself no more private. If they really do not want to be seen doing that kind of stuff, they had no business doing it in public. What kind of message are they giving to the young.

That showing sexual feelings in public is O.K. Viewing from western heterosexual standards it does seem O.K. I feel that sex should not be reduced to such trifle an activity. Even if people should have the feeling to express their sexual emotions in public then the issue should be thoroughly discussed --- because it involves a big deviation from our own values --- which consider such things to be expressed in private. Certainly, something doesn't become right just because it happens in the west.

However, if they indeed did not indulge in any such practise and the pictures have been made up by the midday staff, then indeed it?s a serious criminal assault on a person's character. It should also be considered criminal assault on privacy, if the act happened in a private setting.

In any case, the extensive deluge of western culture on an unsuspecting Indian society has changed things a lot here --- it cannot all be for the good. This cultural attack can be compared to the violent siege of ancient world religious practices by Islam and Christianity. It gives the victim culture no time to save its good things or to take the change slowly which is built on its traditional foundation, not by destroying and replacing it ----- all without a dialogue.

Today, an average 10th class girl in Delhi has a boyfriend she is involved with. Lower middle class girls talk openly about their boyfriends in Delhi buses. Don't be surprised to find a boy and a girl sitting cosily on a bus, in each other's arms, with eyes closed, oblivious to the world outside them. Walking hand in hand in the supermarket it no more taboo.

It would be interesting to discuss in a logical manner what is wrong with that? All views are welcome.

Kareena Sues Midday for 20 crore
Dec 17, 2004 03:02 AM12946 Views

MidDay was started as a newspaper way back in mid 1979 by Ayaz Memon. It

was Mumbai?s most popular afternoon daily with the priority being news

coverage of Mumbai city.

But for the past couple of years it has well transcended its initial

basic purpose i.e.''News Coverage''. Today it has joined the league of

those gossip newspapers like Bombay Times, which have no other work

except interfering in people's life & gossiping about them.

The recent Kareena Kapoor & Shahid Kapoor issue making news around

speaks for the fact that the paper is nothing but a glamorizing tool. I

am not here to defend Kareena or anybody. I am here to discuss what a

newspaper is all about. Press as we all know has been given the

privilege of being The Fourth Estate & is considered the most

important of the four estates. We read newspapers to find out what is

happening around in the world. As sitting in one corner of the world we

cannot see what is happening in some other corner we refer to newspapers

for the latest & current news. But today's newspapers give us everything

except NEWS. The articles written are spiced up with more gossip & are

intended to create a stir. Half of the papers are filled up with those

bikini clad so called supermodels who seem to have scarcity of

clothes(MidDay Mates & all those obscene pictures of sports

personality). Do we read news for this sole purpose? If we are

interested in looking at those supermodels we better go to an internet

porn site where we are sure to find some better content. Such things are

suited there & certainly do not look good on a daily newspaper.

I am tired of the articles that this people use as news. How is a

Hollywood star having a silicon implant more important news than the

conditions of people in Iraq & other underdeveloped countries? Is the

issue Julia Roberts giving birth to a child more important than the

issues of undernourished children in our country? Everyday so many

children are born. Then why write only about Julia or some other

personality? This kind of newspapers are solely responsible for the

images that certain women have got like sex goddess, sex idol...etc.

Sex is the three letter word that you will find more in this newspapers

than any other print media. Many people read newspaper to find out

current events. Even they are shocked when they see such obscene content

on the front page. SELLING is the only thing that this newspaper editors

are concerned with. They know people are interested in gossip about

personalities hence print whatever gossip they get. I being a marketing

person know that selling is important, but then marketing does not teach

interfering in other people's lives. No one has the right to interfere

in private life of a person, maybe it's a big personality or a common

man walking on the road.

If Kareena is kissing her boyfriend that's her personal life. She can

kiss anyone she wants. Who are we to interfere in her private life? Her

family background & all is certainly not a front page news. From when

did Kareena become so important? How do you justify clicking her photos

& printing it in the front pages of your newspaper. The reason they give

is more stupid i.e. she did it in public place. Go to a Saturday night

party in Mumbai & you will get more such photos & even more glamorizing

than the current ones. Why target only film personalities? Aren't they

human beings? Don't they have a personal life of their own? Just to sell

your newspaper you write & print such useless stories. How does a film

star kissing her boyfriend become a front page news? There are many

other important news regarding the social issues that are completely

missing.

If you want to print such masala gossips change the category. Put it

under the category of a gossip magazine so that people who are

interested may read it. Why carry out all such things in the name of a

newspaper & fool the general public? Midday claims it is the fastest

growing company on the stock exchange. There is no doubt about it. If

they write more such articles one day they will beat the Sensex too,

because they know what people want to read & that is what they give

precisely. In this as much as Mid Day is guilty so are we. It is we the

general public that likes reading such issues & have given them the

freedom to print whatever they want. It will be useless abusing MidDay

here because to change the present scenario we need to change ourselves.

I have long since stopped referring this newspapers. I happened to know

about this through another newspaper that I trusted. Now I think even

this newspaper is joining that league. The heading of that newspaper was

'Kareena Sues Mid Day For 20 Crore'. I think watching Kekta's serials is

better than reading this papers. The paper is only good for its classifieds

section & the sports section where it gives coverage to local sports.

I think it is upto us to select what we want to read & what we should

ignore.

As MK Gandhiji has rightly said Be the change you need to see in

the world.

Well those are my own personal views. I am putting it here so that it

maybe useful to people in selecting the right paper. Some of you may

have different opinions. They are welcome in comments section.

Popular Paranoia
Oct 01, 2004 08:44 PM6275 Views

At its inception, the Mid-Day (then, an eveninger) pushed the TOI's publication out of gear and virtually monopolised that market. It boasted of splendid and mostly accurate reporting and offered far more entertainment value (read paisa vasool) than any newspaper in that segment.

By that measure, the Mid-Day (which they proudly declare is a profit-making company listed on the NSE & BSE) is today a shadow of its former self. Once known for its crisp reporting and precise editing, it has decided to gloat on past laurels. Complacence has set in, and it is evident as one reads through the pages. The subbie deserves to be shot for every mistake I find (which on an average is at least 10). The reporting is well-rounded only occasionally. Constant error has become the hallmark. Read the paper only for the columns, the MID-DAY MATE, their crosswords, and the editorials.

This does not dilute the fact that this is a widely read and discussed paper. There are some features that have spawned worthy(?) imitators(BT, anyone?). The news you get is fresh and as always tantalising. But very little research goes into the big stories. The paper is known for its gimmicks. Anyone who has read this daily will tell you how honest Mumbai really is. Or whether one gets special treatment at VIP locations just by virtue of the conveyance make. Or how easy it is to get married. Or divorced for that matter.

There are a few columnists (Anil Thakraney and Mukul Sharma, in particular) who catch your eye for their trademark wit. This paper is so popular with advertisers that if weighed, the classifieds would weigh double the weight of the rest of the paper.

The layout of the paper is easy on the eyes. The pictures are usually perfect. One wonders why the best writing you could find in the MID-DAY is only on a Sunday. That's when the real 'stars' come out to shine. The content is far more superior.

As far as dumbing down content is concerned, it beats ToI or BT hands down.

Read only for pure shock value. Or occasionally the lack of it.

An open letter to Mid-Day
Sep 24, 2004 05:36 PM5865 Views

Dear Mr. Pramod Navalkar, I recently read your letter in the english daily Mid - Day, which at one time prided itself to recognize and fulfill the need of the educated, urban residents and citizens of BOMBAY.

The column which you wrote, first off ticks off the Prime Minister on one of his electoral speeches, which I am very sorry to say, didnt know or read till the time you diverted my attention to it.

As it is clear from this, I am not a politician and therefore, I know Mr. Manmohan Singh as the Prime Minister and a ex Finance Minister, who brought out India from being penniless in the years before 1995 by bringing on liberalisation, due to which, I today get a platform to write a letter to your honorable self.

Sadly, I and my generation will not remember him for slipping in an election speech, the election which his party won with a thumping majority. Proof that elections are won on actions, and one doesnt lose them if someone makes some mistake in his election speech.

Respected sir,

I am sorry that I am writing so much about the mistake that Mr. Manmohan Singh committed. But I have a principle that the answer should always exceed the answer. I can still make out that almost three fourths of your excellent column in the esteemed newspaper revolved around one word `Shangai.' Sir, Further, you have berated that you wanted something back, something that you think was taken away from you.

Please allow me to enmurate these things: Vegetables vendors in the Phule Market. Potato Market at Duncan Road. Mill Workers in Lalbaug Parel. No ships in the Dock Area. No fishing in shallow waters. Bandra Fair isnt as grand as it used to be. Sir, I live in the suburbs, I do not know of a Phule Market and I am sorry to say, I have continued eating vegetables and sundry all my twenty three years of my life. But do remember a movie, Sir.

Fire, which was banned by your political party because it was against Indian principles. I know that telling you, or teaching you about self censorship, about the democratic rights of an indian citizen and sundry explanations will be useless, and sir, I have bought my house furniture with my own hard earned money, therefore I shall not egg on the topic.

Sir, The potato market and the Duncan road, both do not exist for me. But what surely exists for me even today, is the ruckus your party created on the railway platforms by making the North Indian people run away.

Again sir, I know that reminding you that Bombay was never willed to anyone except the time it was given as dowry. I myself think that Bombay is a free marker and a free land. The best man, the best party, the best concept has and will win each time there is a fair fight, sir.

As for the mill workers in the Parel Area, sir. You should have please understood that your esteemed column was being printed in one of these mill areas in Lower Parel. Therefore, a mill where people used to mint clothes, today mints newspapers. Surely, sir, a progress? As for the docks, sir. When I was in my fifth or sixth, I learnt that sea travel was always more dangerous and longer than air travelling.

So sir, if you please take some time out as to where the materials in the docks have actually disappeared, you might find them in the various private and government air line offices, ready to be packed and transported, far more quickly and far more efficently than the docks, sir.

As for the Bandra Fairs, sir. The Bandra fair, has turned out into a ghost of itself, because of a certain community which has come into Bombay and has tried to grasp it in it's business class grasp. Some of the examples are the new buildings and new colonies coming into being which proudly mark that they are just one minute away from this temple and two minutes away from that temple.

Of course sir, in a democratic country, they should also mark the various mosques, churches, gurudwaras and also the various Hindu diety temples? I can give you the addresses of some buildings which are proud to be a single religion buildings, and some of them drive the other religion people out very rudely. I know, sir. this is illegal. But sir, who said that if it is illegal, it cannot be done? That is the greatness of MUMBAI, sir.

As a voting, tax paying and law abiding citizen of Bombay sir, may I give you a list of some things that I would want back? I would want back the freedom of walking along Chowpatty beach at eleven in the night, under the stars, when I am on my creative best. It also reminds of the times I went my dad there, sir.

I would want back the freedom of celebrating Valentines Day, sir, and buying cards for my mother, my brother, my father and my girl friend, sir. I am sorry, sir. I do have a girl friend, but it is just a biological and physical reflex that a male gene has to be a female gene, sir. You and I cannot fight nature, sir. I would want back the freedom to watch any and every movie that I want on cable sir.

I am above eighteen, with a right to vote. I am not a criminal in a maximum security prison, and no medical institute has ever maintained that I have lost even a percent of my sanity. So sir, all my bodily organs function perfectly well and I sincerely request you, not to hinder their functions.

And in the end Mr. Pramod Navalkar and Mid Day, I would want my Bombay back. The Bombay that is being bombarded by money hungry newspapers and religious zealots. STAY OUT OF MY CITY.

2.IT WOULD BE BETTER IF MID DAY PAPER TRIES TO COVER OTHER NEIGHBOURING CITIES LIKE PUNE ALSO IN DEPTH,WHICH WILL INCRESE THE CIRCULATION OF THE PAPER AND IT WILL ASSIST THE NEIGHBOURING CITIES TO GET FULL NEWS ABOUT THEIR CITY AND NEIGHBOURING TOWNS.

3WE HAVE OBSERVED THAT MID DAY NEWS PAPER IS TAKING OUT TWO AND SOMETIMES 3 DIFFERENT EDITIONS FROM DIFFERENT PLACES ONE IN THE MORNING ;ONE IN THE LATE MORNING AND ONE IN THE AFTERNOON.

WE SUGGEST THEAT MID DAY SHOULD HAVE ONE OR MAXIMUM TWO EDITIONS ONE PUBLISHING FROM THE MAIN CITY AND ONE FROM THE SUBURBS IN THE AFTERNOON TO AVOID CONFUSION

WE HOPE THE MANAGEMENT WILL ARRANGE FOR THE NEEDFUL.

PLEASE KEEP IT UP

The essence of Mumbai
Aug 28, 2003 03:43 PM7978 Views

Mid- Day is the very essence of Mumbai. If it is in Mid- Day then it is happening. Unless it is in Mid-Day it is not news!! I may sound biased but this is true for any true to heart Mumbaikar. It is an afternoon paper, and is way ahead of any other afternoon paper in Mumbai. The supplements it has are very informative. Mid-Day List tells you all about the events, movies and entertainment news tec. Mid-Day Classified is an epic for job hunters and any other type of advertisers. Mid-Day Hot-property is all about real estate and property in and around mumbai. Mid-day caters to the suburbs of Mumbai as well. It has Metro Mulund, Thane, Borivli, Chembur, Malad, Bandra, Ghatkopar, Lokhandwala and Vashi. These supplements are out once a week and has a very local, suburban flavour. The mid-day crossword is also a fav of many. This paper is read by one and all. This is the paper that everyone reads, that everyone quotes, that everyone is familiar with. This paper has become a habit for Mumbaiites.

UP TO DATE

Ten years in Mumbai and this paper has been my lifeline to the news, views, gossip, relaxation and friend.

I was first introduced to this when I started working there. A colleague of mine was engrossed in it, and I just peeped over her shoulder to see what was taking her so much attention, and it was the crossword puzzle in the newspaper. I was curious and looked at the first page and there was the name in bold dark letters MID DAY. Yes from that day I have been addicted to that particular newspaper. I am from the land of THE HINDU, so never been curious of any other newspaper at all nor introduced to any other English daily in my life. Here was a newspaper, which got me interested.

Every afternoon after lunch I used to eagerly wait for the newspaper boy to come in and give me a copy of the paper. It was THE newspaper for me. It had everything happening in and out of the state, but more so about AMCHI MUMBAI. The travel time home from work by most of the mumbaikars is spent reading this daily. It has the most updated news happening, which is missed out by the daily morning newspaper.

Except for certain articles which are not based on right investigation once in a way it’s a perfect daily, but I suppose there is no newspaper in this country which is not biased nor with articles without proper spadework done.

Once I moved to Chennai I missed my daily dose of MID DAY, there was no newspaper equal to it in Chennai. The same old newspapers here are doling out the conservative views. The spice and charm of my favourite was missing. So the next best for me was to go back to reading MID DAY but how to do it, well I remember that MIDDAY had started online news site, so I checked it out and was very delighted to read the news on line on their site. It gave all the Mumbai news that was missing in the news dailies of Chennai. It also covers the news of the suburbs (metros) so I felt I was still in Mumbai and getting updated everyday as to the happenings there. Their guide to Mumbai is superb. The column Voices is also to be read to know what the common man in Mumbai thinks of the happenings in the city.

Recently I had downloaded their news alert WHASSUP?And it is very good. As I am online most of my working time, I can see the latest discreet news popup without going to their website every time I want to know the latest news, on my screen for few seconds. It covers all categories of news and not just current affairs. I came to know about the bomb blasts in Mumbai when I saw it first on the pop up, otherwise I would have been in the dark about it till I switch on the television. After that I decided that it deserved a review in this column. It is easy to download it and it does not disturb in any of the work being done on the PC. It is worth when we can get updated news ON THE DOT.

Amchi Mumbai on the Web…
Aug 25, 2003 04:52 PM5946 Views

You type http://www.chalomumbai.com in the address box and Poof !! Whoosh!! it becomes http://www.mid-day.com. This is Amchi Mumbai on the Web.

Believe me, I am married in Bombay and I can’t find my around as we don’t live there much of the time. But I can sure find my way around on this site. It is a very informative site. Now where do I start? Well… Let me start with the homepage.

It starts with the Lead Story of the day, with the latest updates. It also has a downloadable tool Whassup, which gives you the latest news updates on your desktop. Now isn’t that cool for those guys who want to be the first to know what’s happening around the globe or for that matter around the universe. Guess what the latest news update is as I type my review? It is Mayawati decides to quit as UP Chief Minister. We also have Society, City, Sports, and Entertainment (Movies, Art & Theatre) News with many Other Headlines. We also get Metro News for Thane, Bandra, Borivli, Chembur, Ghatkopar, Lokhandwala, Mulund, Malad and Vashi. You can also register to get the latest news in your e-mail box.

Another interesting thing out there is the Weather forecasting, temperature listing and the Lake Levels information. Today’s weather forecast is Moderate rain or showers. Frankly, I don’t know how the lake level information helps.

Then you have the advisory section where in skin therapists, psychiatrists, travel agents, etc. answer your queries. The sub sections in here are Mind and Soul, Travel, Agony Aunt, Sexual Health, Beauty & Feng Shui. There is also the Civic Forum wherein you tell your grievances to the Mumbai Municipal Commissioner K C Srivastava and your traffic woes to the Mumbai's Joint Commissioner.

Next follows the The Complete Mumbai Guide with information on Hotels/Resorts & Restaurants, Art & Humanities, Education, Entertainment, Apparel & Stores, Health, Home, Shopping and Services. You have the latest hot deals listed out in here. Then in City Engagements you can promote or announce an upcoming event, but you have to send in your details five days prior to the event and they will publish it on the site for FREE!

As I am still typing the review, the latest news update says… Bomb blast at Zaveri Bazaar, Gateway of India.

There are many columnists and interesting columns written by them. The Picture of the Day displays very interesting photographs. One of today’s photographs shows a woman stealing water from a pipe. Horoscopes!! Now that’s one thing a lot of people are enthusiastic about. Marjorie Orr, the World's No 1 astrologer is here with your horoscopes. The wallpapers are interesting, especially the Vintage Mumbai ones. The article on Mumbaikar is interesting. Do you know who has donated 11,882 benches to Mumbai? Checkout Mumbaikar for the answer.

Then there is the Mid Day poll, Virtual Gallery and Mumbai Dope (with a lot of trivia). You also have a section How to get… which guides you how to obtain an Indian Passport, Driving License and Piped Gas. Under Every week.. you have articles on Learning, Hot Property and Big Break. Also check out Sunday Mid Day, that’s interesting as well.

There is lot more to check like (b>Diary, Crossword, Cartoons, Voices, Classifieds (with tons of stuff to be sold, bought, learnt and spouses wanted), jobs (there are two vacancies at the moment) and Newsletters.

Well it has a web store as well with lots of products on sale. Go ahead check it out.

Still another news update… Bomb blast at Zaveri Bazaar, Gateway of India.

Phew!!! That was a long tour of ChaloMumbai Oops! Is it Mid Day?

A MUST-READ FOR THE YOUTH!!!
Jul 18, 2003 12:51 PM6562 Views

Hi everyone! This review is not so much about Mid-Day as it is about the articles by one of its columnists,Mr.Anil Thakraney.

Mr.Thakraney is the editor of The Brief,an Indian ad-mag.But apart from it,he is also a writer par excellence who never fails to get his point across. Most of his articles deal with the current Indian scenario & highlight the problems faced by the common man. With his acerbic writing, he touches upon sensitive issues directly in a manner which will make you sit up and take notice. He attempts to unmask the hypocrisy of our unscrupulous politicians and how the decisions made by them are influenced by greed rather than the thought of the overall good of the people.A self-confessed 'disciple' of the great 'Busybee',he often resorts to attacking language to do the needful. His writing is a blend of sarcasm, humour and satire put to good effect.

Besides, his articles are also informative. For instance, everyone knows about the fiasco called Home-Trade,a non-existent company that was using Sachin Tendulkar,Hrithik Roshan and Shah Rukh Khan as brand ambassadors to try and fool us into buying their non-existent products. We also know that the aforementioned trio is seeking compensation from the company's very-much-existent C.E.O. Sanjay Agarwal. What we do not know is that to pay the 'advances' of these three stars,Mr.Agarwal had borrowed loans from little known village banks where poor peasants(the most ignored population in India,an agricultural country)had deposited their lifetime earnings. What happened after Home-Trade went bankrupt? The banks closed down.As a result, peasants lost whatever little they had. Most of them committed suicide and those who didn't, had to resort to such means as selling off their womenfolk to Mumbai brothels. Our three heroes will some day recover the compensation they seek. But our peasants never will.

The above story features in just one of the many thought-provoking articles written by Mr.Thakraney.I,for one, suggest that you buy Mid-Day atleast every Sunday(Mr.Thakraney is a Sunday columnist),or log on to https://mid-day.com,go to the 'Our Columnists' section, click on 'Anil Thakraney' and start reading right away. Some of his notable articles are 'We are truly a free nation','F!Not Bhopal again!','You slept well,Ambarish?' and 'A day in the life of the good doctor'.

A word of caution though:Some of you might find his writing offensive. Some of you might even hate him(and me!) for the same. You might or might not agree with him.But one thing is for sure-his articles will make you think;look back and reflect on the many problems that our nation is facing today. At a time when most journalists are busy covering every minute detail of who was kissing whom and who was wearing what at a Page 3 bash,Mr.Thakraney comes out as a refreshing change; as a journalist who will leave no stone unturned in bringing out the truth.Kudos to him!

Please do check out his articles and let me know how you found them.

NEWS.....ALL DAY
Jul 10, 2002 11:42 AM8479 Views

This as a mumbaite is well known paper to the people of this city. Ithink one of the most read and bought papers after the Times of India. It is a local mumbai news paper and needs no introduction of any kind. This paper covers mostly all areas of news and entertainment bundled into one, and I think the people who read it will agree to me.It covers news afcourse not to avery large extent but all the hapenings of the city are taken care of . It is priced at Rs2.50 which I think is quite reasonable and is available in nearly all parts of Mubai. It has crisp informations on Seminars held, Fashion, Events od the day/week, classes of different kind, movie listings, TV listings , Workshops, sports, classifieds, puzzles and afcourse starforecast by Marjorie Orr. Well this is a topic everyone says they dont believe but sooner or later it is read by old and young...Am I right..........? I have seen people of all ages bundling tthis pot of information and doing cross word puzzles in trains & Buses too.

It has a section which is called''YOUR SAY'' where a daily topic is given and localities , I mean mumbaikars voice their opinion on various topics as per the day. This newspaper also carries ads for products new/old. All in all a very informative newspaper. It has also a website https://midday.com where all info is available. I suggest to the people who do not read this paper to get hold of it and read it and see your addiction grow to this friendly paper.

Test the pulse of Mumbai
Apr 25, 2002 02:23 PM7785 Views

Mid-Day is one of the hundreds of newspapers that find their way into the millions of homes in Mumbai and its surrounding areas everyday. It is published by Mid-Day Multimedia Ltd. which was promoted by Mr. Khalid Ansari, a renowned journalist of long standing repute. I have no idea for how long it’s been around but I have it from very reliable sources, thanks to the nature of my profession, that it’s the only other newspaper in Mumbai that makes money apart from the Times of India.

Layout and Content

Mid-Day (MD) comes in a size that varies between a normal magazine and the daily newspaper. It comes in three editions daily - one each in the morning, afternoon and early evening. Before you start stretching your eyebrows in wonder, please allow me to clarify that it’s only the front and hind pages that undergo the cosmetic changes. The rest of the contents remain by and large untouched in the editor’s hands through the three “avatars” during the course of the day. The paper comprises between 60-72 pages on any given day, depending on the supplements that go with it.

The front page features a huge colour picture, the theme being the news of the day followed by the day’s major headlines under it along with the reference page numbers where the said articles are covered in more detail. The actual news coverage spans around 28 pages and another 28 are dedicated strictly to classifieds and hundreds of myriad other trinkets. The supplements, which mostly cover entertainment, lifestyles, travel, etc. span another 4-8 pages depending on the content on hand, mood of the editor and time available for printing before the next edition…strictly in that order. At times, the ads that appear even the non-classifieds sections are so large in size and many in number that I’m forced to scout diligently for the news articles in a particular page before I find them. MD is virtually an advertisers paradise and one can find easily anything from pins to planes in the classifieds.

Coverage of News

The caption on top of the paper screams “We deliver Mumbai” and quite naturally, more than 70% of the newspaper is devoted to coverage of the local news with the National/International accounting for the balance space by default. The news could be as mundane as a celebrity losing her dear doggie (with a snap of both cuddling in happier times) or as outrageous as Britney Spears wearing her jeans so low that even a handicapped chap without the benefit of his “Aankhen” can see her underwear from behind (this one had two snaps!) Most of the other pages are filled with things like “Letters to the Editor or the Municipal/Police Comissioner”, petty crimes that happen everyday, etc. Here again, Mid-Day quite like the ToI cannot just avoid non-coverage of the glam events that happen with a surprising regularity in the social circuits that Mumbai is so famous for. 2 pages are for the Business news and the articles there are mostly condensed articles of the main news that appear in the business dailies in the morning. The only change would be in the coverage of the closing range of the BSE sensex. The redeeming factors are in the coverage of the sports news. The articles here are upto date and are quite helpful to the Mumbaiwallahs, especially when a cricket series involving India is on or in the midst of major sporting events like the soccer or cricket World Cup.

Quality of Authors and Correspondents

To its credit, MD has a good network of correspondents in and around Mumbai and that helps in giving near-live coverage even when the Chief Minister’s dog barks in his official residence. There are some really good authors who contribute good articles regularly like Anil Thakraney, Bachi karkaria, Anil Dharker, and Pramod Navalkar in the general section and luminaries of the status of Michael Ferreira, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, etc. in the sports section. Nisha Jamwal (interior decors and related stuff), Deepa Adhikari (travel and places), Narendra Kusnur (music and movies) are the other main regular contributors. Here again the sports section scores highly thanks to some excellent coverage of current events and some nostalgic articles by ex-greats.

Other Tidbits

The third page invariably is decked with an enticing snap of a semi-nude female model and the very intention of putting the snap at the very beginning smacks of an unbridled taste of voyeurism on the part of the powers that be. Why am I complaining anyway? I too devote a good minute or two exercising my eyes on the snap, the duration depending on how much or how less clothes the model has on her body. The standard cartoon also appears on page 3 and more often than not gives the impression that it was hastily sketched to fill up empty space there.

The only reason why I buy the paper on a daily basis while on the way back home is for the comics, horoscopes and crosswords section which hold my attention till I reach my destination, the journey spanning about 30-40 minutes. “Calvin & Hobbes”, “Crock” and “Born Loser” act as great humour stimulants and allow me that rare privilege of chuckling within myself at the end of a tiring day.

My Opinion

Mid-Day is not a paper to buy if one is looking for reading good National and International news because it caters more to the local news. It is priced at Rs. 2.50 for the first & second editions and Rs. 3.00 for the final one. I get full value for money because I not only get to go through the comic strips and do the crosswords but also grab the occasionally excellent articles by good authors.

Mid Day - Not what it used to be.
Feb 28, 2002 01:16 PM8165 Views

MidDay Started its newspaper way back in mid 1979. Started by Ayaz Memon, it was Bombay's most popular afternoon daily which specifiacl;ly had all news coverage of bombay city. The News contents however slowly detriorated in the last 2-3 years with Mid Day reaching the lowest form of news coverage in the last year when the news paper got a face lift. Many expected that a face lift would mean more news and more solutions to the problems of citizens of bombay with extensive investigative journalism. However readers were in for a shock when the new look meant more advertisements, less words, more pictures, less letters to the editors (Earlier there would be atleast 14-15 letters now there space is given to only 3-4). They have started columns like Letter to the municipal commissioner for civic problems of the readers, health columns, personal guidance columns, excellent column for children by Mukesh Khanna and educational columns. But theyt are very few and far in between. The primary job of any newspaper , specially afternoon dalies, is to provide readers with in depth and non biased information on curent events. Mid Day has failed to that in the last 2-3 years. While current price rises and recession news are not covered, what ius covered is..How The sun of actor Suresh Oberoi may demand 10 million rupees per movie or why bal thakrey should call a permanent cease fire with pro valentine day activiss or why Amar Upadhay should be bough back alive in a popular (eeks!!) night soap on television. With the sole exception of Suresh Prabhu and mukesh khanna no one writes anything worthwile. They have journalists (sadly thats what they call themselves) like shoba de whoi writes about which party she attended last or why shahrukh khan is a good person in the film industry. Or someone like anil dharker who is forever crying in his columns. There are inumerable other instances where this once popular newspaper had showed its lowest form. Mid Day does have once in a while investigative journalism but thats ver very far and few in between. Where are those journalists like Carl Bernstein, Bob Woodward, Lowell Bergman, Mike Wallace, Daniel Pearl and Arun Shourie when you really miss them ? The Case of jayabala Asher who had been thrown out of a train a few years back was handled very well by mid day. So were the post srikrishna commission reports proceedings handled well by jyoti punwani. In sports section mid day is perhaps the only newspaper which gives elusive coverage to local city sporting events in order to boost up the morale3s of the youngsters. But Mid day must stop printing reports oin film stars or page 3 celebrities or ''Happening parties'' in the news paper and concentrate only on the important issues and problems in the city. The Sun Day Mid day is the best one of the week. On the whole Mid Day is good for only one thing. I need the newspaper every evening whn I attend the natures call or else I will get constipapted. Its good only for that. Reading in the loo. Did you know that mid day had actually carried a poll asking people how 'dakshaben' ( a character from a stupid night soap on star tv) should exit?

One more thing...Because Times Of India and Mid Day are newspapers with the highest circulation in bombay so there are many classifiedsfor job vacancies. I suggest anyone looking for a job do buy these newspapers (especially on wednesday)..Atleast thats where these newspaper score big
