Monastry @ McLeodganj

A travel of 11 Kms from Dharamshala is this little township called Mcleodganj-The seat of the exiled Tibetan Govt,so to say. Do not get fascinated by the wonderful 15 minute+ drive up the pine laden highway,as you will be welcomed by a strange Taxi Stand and very difficult to manouvre thru' them and then the main crossing of the town. One way system of traffic regulation has reached hill stations in a Big Way and you will realise it from this junction.Drive past the entire market slowly till you reach that part of the road that begins to steeply slope down and on your right is the large congregation of perpetual Relay Hunger Strikers with "Free TIBET" banners and posters all over. This is the entry to the Monastry on the left(fend for a parking space or let your driver do that, but monitor it with him over the Cell).

As you enter you get to understand the Problem of Tibet and solidarity they are getting from all over the world and we as next door neighbours do not understand so much(or I presumed that I thought so). Walk past all the buildings and climb onto the temple to be greeted by one of the most fascinating Monastry paintings adorning the wall and then the Sanctum Sanctorum. My GOD,it was a real dramatic and humbling feeling that I got as we entered (though I am not the religious kinds)and the magnificient images of the Iconic Statues was very overwhelming indeed. Do visit the Tibet Museum on your way out of the monastry.Indulge in the Roll the Wheels and sync it with the chant. If you are Lucky you may find devouts performing various kinds of meditations.

Remember to ask to take photographs and not start on your own, generally the disciples there do not refuse you but please ask first or earn their wrath.

After the visit as you walk back thru the market you will come across some very nice souvenier shops and you need to be a good haggler for prices.Precious and semi precious rare stones, handicrafts, art, clothes etc are all available. Not too miss the Momos and Thukpa joints. As you reach back to the main square, there are 2 Pastry shops and you need to GORGE on these lovely creamy exceptional delicacies and you cant beleive that this was the cheapest at the variety and size you will ever come across, they are just simply gorgeous.
