Malshej Ghat Reviews

Mumbai India
A Perfect Weekend Spot!!!
Mar 08, 2004 10:19 AM 8540 Views

Hi Friends,

After being in Mumbai for the last seven years totally tied in profession I couldn't manage much to explore places around mumbai except Khandala, Lonavla, mahabaleshwar. After a long time few of our colleagues discussed and found Malshej Ghat as the new spot to explore and you wont believe I was totally zapped.

The Kasara local leaving Mumbai CST at 4am reaches Kalyan at 5:40am. At 5:55am there is a bus from Kalyan crossing the Malshej Ghat (usually going to places like Shiroor, Alephata, and Nagar). It takes 45 minutes to reach Murbad, 80 minutes to reach Tokawada where there is a 10 minute halt and 2 and a half hours to reach Khubiphata Khireshwar. Murbad is 30km, Tokawada is 55km and Khubiphata is 91km from Kalyan. Nowadays, till about 9:00pm buses are available from Khubiphata towards Murbad and Kalyan, once every 20 to 30 minutes. One also gets jeeps going towards Tokawada and Murbad till about 8:00pm from Khubiphata area.

A trek in the Malshej Ghat region offers a unique feeling of remoteness and wildness, maybe because this region is less frequented by trekkers. All along the Konkan, the average drop in these mountains is about 900m, and the drops are rather steep. Amazing views can be got from the top of the mountains, of both the Konkan plains, as well as nearby and distant peaks and valleys. But because of less frequent transport connections, one should be careful about the first and last bus.

Malshej Ghat rising to a height of 2362 feet in the Dang Ranges is 'the' place to experience the magic of the monsoons.

Vibrant shades of green interspersed with numerous silver streaks cascading down the cliff face and the cool mist laden atmosphere is a sure fire stress buster.

In this area, lie some unique places, which have great historical importance.

Some must see spots in this region are Naneghat, Fort Harishchandragad, Konkan kada, Khireshwar lake, Khireshwar temple, Fort Shivneri (the birth place of the great Maratha King, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj). One can also visit Lenyadri and Ozar which are among the eight designated Ganapati shrines on the Ashtavinayak list.

Emerging into this mist covered world from the tunnel at the top of the Ghat, with glimpses of tall rugged mountains towering all around and the breathtaking sight of a flock of flamingoes rising from the monsoon lake, have you convinced of having stumbled upon Mumbai's very own Shangri-La?

Update on Hotels

Flamingo has taken over MTDC & has build around the original structure.

The tariff plan is as follows: Deluxe: Rs.1500 for 2 people (although there are 4 beds!)

Standard: Rs.1000 for 2 people (4 beds again!)

Economy: Rs.560 for 2 people (Rs.200 per additional person)

The economy rooms are dilapidated with beds that would be scoffed at in any civil hospital. The standard rooms are in the original MTDC structure & offer a scenic view. Deluxe rooms are not worth the price. There is a board that says ''Room service not available''. If you stay there you realize that a lot more gets added to the ''not available'' list. The only saving grace is the manager of the hotel, a very cheerful and cordial Goan, whose amazing repertoire of skills would liven up any otherwise boring situation (especially since there is nothing else to pass time once night falls...there's not even a telephone!).

We were pleasantly surprised to be offered choices of hotels at Malshej Ghat. We personally liked Su-Shant Holiday resorts, just 1 km away from MTDC/Flamigo. The place is well maintained with good interiors. A room for 2 people costs Rs.500/-. The pure veg food that they serve is also good.

However if u are a large group, the Vanvihar hotel, situated just before Su-Shant offers a dormitory kind of accommodation for Rs.800 (2 beds and an unlimited supply of mattresses:-).

We went there in October & the ghat lived up to its reputation of being a truly all season attraction, although there is no doubt that the rainy season brings out the best in the ghat.

What a ghat!!

It was my first official picnic (thru my company). There were around 100 of us. And we were just looking to freak out. Believe me, we did!!

We stayed at a beautiful place owned by a doctor. Small cottages, a river flowing by the side, heavenly food. All these just added to the cool climate and serene atmosphere.

We took a trip to the Ghats, which were just fantastic, it being the rainy season. The fantastic scenery has to be seen to be believed. And on top of it all, at the cottage, the doctor's friends came over at night, and we all got together for a fantastic musical evening. WOW!!

MTDC has a nice place here. The stay here would cost you less then 500 per day. It is better to travel by a hired or your own vehicle so that you can enjoy the journey properly. Take your driver along. You can also go by ST buses, but I wouldn't recommend that.

Take care on weekends. The crowds are huge, rowdy, and drunk. Go in a large group and make sure the ladies are with you. It is not so ominous as I make it out to be, but precaution is better than cure. If you are going as a small group, go on weekdays.

There are some places to visit nearby. The best time to go is undoubtedly the rainy season. Read cuchillo's review. It is more detailed. But anyway, the place is worth going to.

Rain Haven

Come the monsoon, and we mumbaiites are constantly on the lookout for places to go and have fun.Of course the main idea is to get drenched, soaked to the skin and have oodles of fun. And weekends are usually planned with these outings. We do have a lot of places, most notable being the nearest and easily approachable Khandala, Lonavla Or Matheran. Well these are good, but a wilder adventure would be the picturesque place called Malshej Ghats. And here located at a very picturesque point, MTDC has its resort.

164 kms from Mumbai (135 from Pune), This place can be approached from Kalyan Station, from where u can travel in The State Transport Buses. One visit in the rains and you'll want to come back again to these dense green valleys and cascading waterfalls, the soaring craggy peaks and fog-smothered massifs. The drive itself up the Ghats is an exhilerating experience. So many waterfalls, cascading over your bus...ah this is a blissful place indeed. June to September, Malshej Ghat becomes a wonderworld of fauna and flora. This is a haven for trekkers, picnickers, and adventure lovers. This is a serene place, except on weekends, when hordes of people flock to this place. Then you have to watchout for the rowdy, drunk crowds. Its best to take your rain gear with you when you visit this place. Other places of interest, should you have the time and inclination, are the Shivneri fort (birth place of Shivaji), a few Buddhist caves, and Harishchandragadh. The trek up this fort, around 6 hrs from the base ( a 2hr walk to get to the base from the main road), is just fabulous. Once you are up on the mountain, go towards the Konkan Kadha. This is the mountainside, shaped like a semicircular kadha (pan). From here you can see a coin getting tossed up into the air, swirling upward because of high wind velocity. The view too is just great.

So friends, when you go to Malshej, go with time on your hands and explore all around to your hearts content. And the rooms of MTDC, are priced between Rs 500/- to 850/- .Other than the MTDC, there is the Flamingo Hill Resort. You can make bookings from Mumbai (+91-22 - 8775016, 8775026) For MTDC, you have to go to the MTDC offices. The best times to visit: June - September
