Lovers Rock - Various Artists Reviews

Of Potter, Love & Wonderwall ...
Apr 21, 2004 12:22 AM 2519 Views

Raj - The forbidden three-letter word ...

I think (ya, I have started thinking) that I have a wonderful name - a name which gives me the liberty to proclaim ''Raj sabhi par raj karta hai ...'' Imagine, even Shah Rukh Khan needs to borrow my name to score a hit!

It's a known fact that I hate anyone calling me anything other than 'Raj'. And so to annoy me, my friends, Indians and countrymen (Alright, that got a little dramatic ...) coin all kinds of nicknames for me. My parents used to call me Chintu, but when I informed them that I am not fat enough to have two chins, they started calling me Chin one. My college mates, on the other hand, prefer to call me Harry Potter. A bespectacled round visage with hair flopping on my forehead ... all that's missing is a scar!

Somehow, I find nicknames strange. In my case, all my nicknames are longer than my name. So while others introduce themselves as 'Hi, I am ABCDEF, ABC for short'', how am I supposed to introduce myself ... ''Hi, I am Raj, Harry Potter for long''?

Which is why I find nicknames on MSN Messenger wierd. Sample some nicknames of some celebrities:

Eminem: 'Sachha Sukdaa Rangeela' (Real Slim Shady!)

Kareena Kapoor: 'Bolo saab, kya iraada hai? Chat karna hai kya?'

Laloo Prasad Yadav: 'Bup'

Shah Rukh Khan: 'Heyheyheyheyheyheyheyheyheyheyheyheyheyheyheyheyhey ...' (exceeds the MSN nick limit!)

The other day, my friend (all right, I admit it ... for me, she is more than a friend ... one-way traffic, you know) came online with her nick as 'Wonderwall'. I asked her whether her nick referred to the wonderful Great Wall Of China. Shocked, she replied, ''Gosh, haven't you heard this song? It's simply amazing, yaar. The singer calls the girl he loves as 'Wonderwall', thus giving the song its name.''

''Oh!'' I exclaimed. ''So that means that you're my wonderwall?''

I then caught this song on television, and experienced sheer bliss. I immediately went to buy the Oasis album which contains the number, but owing to the album not being in stock, I was forced to buy Lovers' Rock.

There is no need to use a weighing scale to deduce that the album is worth its weight in gold. Contrary to its title, this album is not only rock, per se. Watch out for a wonderful blend of soft rock, rock and roll, alternative rock and even 80's pop.

This albums transcends all genres. Only rock lovers won't love it. It's an ideal gift to a special friend, whether she/he loves or loathes rock.

The Show Must Go On - Queen.

Although this original track might not qualify as a diehard romantic number, there is no doubting the sheer emotional power of this number. If the name sounds familiar, a cover version of this number was used for Moulin Rouge. Power-packed lyrics, apt use of the guitar and fantastic singing make this song a classic.

Outside the dawn is breaking, But inside in the dark I'm aching to be free! The show must go on!

Let's Make A Night To Remember - Bryan Adams.

Since this album is packed with some classics, the only number which didn't have me satisfied was this number, in spite of Adams being one of my favourites. The crux remains that 'Let's make a night' is a strictly average number, by BA standards and is not a patch on 'Everythin' I do' and 'Please Forgive Me', or for that matter, even 'Heaven' and 'I'm Ready', when it comes to romantic numbers sung by Adams. Moreover, the number is trimmed from 6.17 to 4.40. According to my knowledge, this is the only song in the entire compilation which has been trimmed.

Crazy - Aerosmith.

A song which is loved by many. Yet, it doesn't list in my favourites since I have never had an extremely high opinion about Aerosmith. I like the riffs between the verses, though.

Every Breath You Take - The Police.

This is a number which sounds more like a pop number, but there is no denying that some of the pop music in the eighties was brilliant. Sting sings this number (he was a part of a group called The Police before turning solo) wonderfully and some great lyrics lift this number. In the late eighties, Sting had also recorded a different version of this number which went like 'Every bomb you make'.

Every move you make, Every vow you break, Every smile you fake, Every claim you stake, I'll be watching you.

Wonderful Tonight - Eric Clapton

It's magic and I am not referring to the Koi Mil Gaya chartbuster. Clapton is one of the best exponents of the six-string ever and the introduction of this song is simply mind-blowing! Great lyrics and fine guitaring make this song a great hear. A beautiful rendetion of love, this song proves Clapton's greatness.

I feel wonderful because I see the love light in your eyes and the wonder of it all is that you just don't realize how much I love you.

Keep On Lovin' You - REO Speedwagon

Another number which borders on pop and rock and roll. The song has got a nice beat to it and good lyrics lift the number.

Rosanna - Toto.

Great instrumentations and good lyrics abound this number. The singing is geat as the number again borders on pop and rock and roll.

Romeo & Juliet - Dire Straits.

'You and me, babe. How about it?’

Romance is not always about beautiful, silken voices with an orchestra playing in the background. Sometimes, gruff and raw vocals of say a Lucky Ali or a Mark Knopfler are enough. Add to that Knopfler’s guitaring and some irony-laden lyrics and voila! You have an all-time classic!

I can’t do the talk like they talk on TV, And I can’t do a love song like the way it’s meant to be, I can’t do everything but I’d do anything for you, I can’t do anything except be in love with you

Died In Your Arms Tonight - Cutting Crew.

I just love the way this song is sung. Powerful singing and lyrics are the best features of this song.

Wind Of Change - Scorpions.

I had heard this song before but wasn't aware of the band. The whistle in the beginning has a hypnotizing effect and sets the tone for the rest of the song. A beautiful song, with beautiful https://lyrics.

Walking down the street, Distant memories are buried in the past forever. I folow the Moskva down to Gorky Park, listening to the wind of change

Black Velvet - Alana Myles.

This may not be a great number, but there is no denying that it is very catchy indeed. It's one of those kind of numbers where the music and lyrics may not win Oscars (er, Grammies in this case), but you just cannot help liking the song.

Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for.

Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Rarely has a number about moving on sounded so romantic and this is one of my favourite numbers. It remains the only song I have heard from Lynyrd Skynyrd, though I have heard 3 different versions of this same number.

Broken Wings - Mr. Mister.

So what did you expect? Miss Mister? For God's sake, Karan Johar is not singing! The first thing that you notice about the song are the sensitive https://lyrics. Add some great music and you have a wonderful song.

Baby it's all I know ... That you're half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole ...

Kindly check out the comments section for the best song of the album!
