I purchase this very lovely children’s book online at Half.com for the low price of $1.00, I’m always looking for interesting books to read to my students, and possibly incorporate it in the lesson. The cover of this book is what attracted my attention along with the story's main characters, an elderly couple and the bright and bold colors. After reading this delightful book The Lighthouse Children I found it to be a story filled with warmth, and tenderness. I especially enjoyed the author’s use of the story’s main characters an elderly couple.

It’s amazing how God’s use of animals can serve as a wonderful wall of protection around us, animals give us comfort, they make us laugh, cry, and live longer. Well in this story The Lighthouse Children we will discover the beautiful effects a group of sea gulls have on an elderly couple whose job is to watch a lighthouse at their seaside home.

The Author and the Illustrator

The author and Illustrator is Syd Hoff. Mr. Hoff’s use of blue, green, black, and yellow colors of warmth along with his skillful and simple cartoonish drawing introduces a sense of humor and tenderness to this charming story.

There are 32 pages in this book. The Lighthouse Children was published in 1994.

The Story

Sam and Rose is an elderly married couple who lives near the sea and a lighthouse. Their job is to help guide the ships that pass the lighthouse. They would shine their flashlights from the lighthouse as the ships passed.

Sam and Rose didn’t have any children; they befriended the sea gulls as a result of their friendship with the sea gulls they were never lonely. The sea gulls adored Sam and Rose. Sam and Rose would feed the sea gulls daily, they played with them, and even had them pose when painting or taking pictures of them.

However, sea gulls can’t stay in one place too long they must move on. One day a storm wrecked the lighthouse and Rose and Sam decided they couldn’t repair the damaged lighthouse. So they decided to move to another neighborhood. When they arrived to their new home they were greeted by a host of friendly neighbors. There were cookouts, and parties Sam and Rose were once again never lonely. But they missed their birds and wished for their return. So as the night fell they would beam their light in the sky hopping the birds would find them. I stop here. What well happen next in this story folks? Will Sam and Rose finally see their friends again? You’ll find out what happens when you purchase this lovely children’s book for your children.

Final thoughts

As you can see The Lighthouse Children is a very touching story that your children will enjoy. Animal lovers will also be touched by this tender story as well. I enjoyed the author’s warm writing approach to this story as it reflected a wonderful and beautiful relationship between a genteel elderly couple and a flock of sea gulls. Here the author wonderfully captured the beautiful and timeless relationship between animal and human life. As for the text the big bold font and the simple vocabulary will make reading easy and enjoyable for the young reader. Children at ages 6 to 8 years of age will enjoy reading this book. Preschoolers and kindergarten children will also enjoy this book.
