After my last Nike shoe was stolen (where else but in our great Indian railways coach), I didn't have the courage to spend another 2-3k on a ''phoren'' shoes. So, I decided to be a little patriotic (''Be Indian, Buy Indian'') and started looking for a ''low priced, high quality'' show (it is never like that, as you will soon find out).
My first stop was that familiar Bata shoe store, where the employees are more busy entertaining themselves than bother about the (potential) customers. Despite all the hype on change in Bata's old ways, it still remains a group (won't call it a company also) of lazy fellows.
Next stop was a nice-looking Liberty showroom. I was really impressed by the showroom and the various models of sports shoes kept on display there. Even more amazing was the fact that the shoes with such great designs were priced almost 1/4th as compared to their ''phoren'' counterparts (Nike, Adidas, Reekbok, etc.) It was't difficult to make up my mind and I picked up a shoes that I thought was best in terms of value and looks.
I wore the shoe with a lot of excitement and pride (Indian comapnies definitely make better and cheaper products than those MNCs, I thought). But my excitement and national pride (no, no, I am not referring to Mr. Modi), lasted only 2 months, because the shoes started showing its true colours by then. First, the inner sole gave way. When I complained to the showroom, they took the shoe and returned it to me after 2 weeks. I later found out that the repaired inner sole lasted for 2 more weeks. Next to give in was the ankle cushioning (it still hurts). When I went back to the showroom, they told me that it is not their responsibility, and as a ''favour'' to me, they can repair it for a price.
That was the last time, I wore a liberty shoe. In the mean time, I have gone ahead and purchased a Reebok shoe for myself. It did cost quite a lot of money (Rs.3000) but I am happy that it has lasted more than 6 months (and it is still in good shape).
I have also learnt that cheaper is not always better.
