Avril Lavigne: ANOTHER angry teenager
Sep 28, 2004 12:18 AM

First of all, I'll tell you my opinion on fancying a little teenager like Avril Lavigne. I do not at all appreciate her image, nor the example she is setting for American girls, or girls around the world.

I know many will disagree, strongly. Sure, she speaks her mean, as well we all should. Infact, my first impression of her was another, younger, Alanis Morissette, whom I happen to admire growing up. Now being age 18, I've realized that the needless, uneccessary anger, depression, and rebellion expressed in these artists music promotes nothing at all positive whatsoever.

I do wish these artists would think more about the example their setting instead of worrying and loving all the damn stinkin dough their making. Yeah, so what, they're individuals. They speak their mind. Their angry. Their depressed. Their unique. As well we all are, the negativity expressed in Ms. Lavigne's music is of poor character, and promotes negativity making rebellion an excuse to stand up for one's own individuality in the wrong way.

I do not believe she holds a good cause, and even if she has one, I do not believe it holds any sort of good. She looks like another guinae pig to me following what the world does. I see nothing at all different from her music, or her image. As well as Madonna has done, Britney Spears, Marilyn Manson, Ozzy Osborne, and so on and so on, they all have done nothing at all to better the condition of our society. Money talks. Indeed it does, and I don't think any of them take in high consideration of what is highly at stake. Children need hero's with good role model value's to be followed and looked upon.

Madonna, Avril Lavigne, etc, etc; should not be glorified as nothing more but imperfect human beings expressing to the world their human feelings. As much as people think and proclaim that they are not at all affected by the content & genre of the music, they are. You cannot get away from it, for it all affects us in ways that may be ignorant to our attention. In this matter, it's about example. Example for the younger to have a chance of growing up with a better outlook on how the world is. Not trying to shrink it down by promoting negative rebellion and hardships that are excuses for mistakes.

So, overall, these entertainers, I have observed, are nothing more to me than disturbed or hormone high 16 year olds that never grew up. If you wish to observe Ms. Lavigne yourself, I've been to her website to see and read her content she puts out. There had been many articles written and reported on her 'individuality' in Teen magazine, Rolling Stone, etc., etc., etc. Avril Lavigne hates Britney Spears? Well, Avril, your just like her. I see no difference in your attitude, behavior, or example. Their all still young, and growing up out of their little phases every one goes through.

The tunes and melody of their music is wonderful I'll admit. Their lyrics and showing of individuality is, however, trash that anyone can do which takes nothing more than ignorant rebellion and poor character. I hope, and wish Avril Lavigne could hear me out on this. She could use her lovely voice and lively talent for another sort of energy. There's no need for more anger with teenagers, they have a hard time with that already. If anyone of you all read this, please, let me know how I could somehow address this to Avril Lavigne herself. There's no need to judge her, but her example does not give me a reason to give her any sort of credit in the fame she holds now. There are children growing up in a harsh cruel environment. Why make it worse with 'harmless' entertainment?

Just Avril
Jul 24, 2003 12:22 PM

Avril Lavigne, the new kid on the block. At 18 years old, She launched her debut Album ''let go'', with the hit single ''complicated'', Her album took the no.8 spot on it's debut. What can I say? Avril has talent (Can britney Spears say the same), the look. She's the full package.

Personally, I Like each and every song on the album - but the Two Tracks that Stand out to me are - I'm with you & Losing Grip. I'd recommend this album to everyone. It's mostly a Pop Album, but there are a few Rock songs in it, for Rock Junkies. Avril comes out with another CD in September ''I'm with Avril''.

The CD Will have Some LIVE performances Of Avril. Can't wait for that one. She was nominated for 5 Grammy Awards, but won none (Damn You Norah!), but Hey, it doesn't mean she wasn't worthy of it at all. Besides Avril, the only other New Artist whose caught my attention with her catchy tracks is Michelle Branch (She sang ''the Game of Love'' With Santana).

I Don't think She's all so popular in India, but I'd Recommend ''The Spirit Room'' Her 2nd Album. The CD is filled with tracks that grab your attention at the first time. Those include - Goodbye to you (my favourite), All you wanted, Everywhere, You get Me among many others.

Interesting Yeah
She's nobody's fool...
May 25, 2003 01:31 AM

Avril Lavigne, an 18-year old singer from Napanee, Ontario (Canada), is one of the most popular singers out there today. She skyrocketed to fame immediately after her first album, Let Go was released in North America. She has set a very different tone - a huge change from the regular cutesy-baby-pop culture that most teenaged singers bring into the music industry.

Avril is a rocker-ish, tomboyish young woman with a dogged ambition to stay true to herself. While other pop stars dress in scanty, scandalous clothes, Avril wears shorts and faded old t-shirts. She has completely distanced herself from the life of the ordinary. She's been nominated for dozens of awards and won them too (totally swept away the Junos in Canada). Here's a review of her album, Let Go.

1. Losing Grip

This song starts off the album with a rather heavy rock background. Her voice is slightly indignant, angry, and outspoken all at once. The lyrics refer to a girl retaliating to her boyfriend about how bad he made her feel. A nicely done song, although not quite my style, and not the best on the album.

2. Complicated

This is, hands-down, my favourite song on the album. You've no doubt heard it on the radio or television - it's chart-busting. Why is this song so famous? Because it's hummable, that's why. The song has a fabulous beat, catchy lyrics, and Avril sounds like she's having a ton of fun. The lyrics are about a girl telling her boyfriend to stop being pretentious - a concept that can certainly apply to couples today. I love this song - very well done.

3. Sk8ter Boi

I refused to listen to this song for the longest time because of the title - really, Avril shouldn't be butchering the English language. Would it kill her to say 'Skater Boy'? But my irritation aside, this song is pretty cool. With pretty heavy background music and a hard-hitting drumbeat, the music itself is enough to make you like this song - but the lyrics are what make it a clincher. This is one of those few songs that actually tells a story - in this case, about a woman who turned down a man because of the way he looked. The story is unique, the music perfectly complements it, and Avril sounds great. Nicely done.

4. I'm with you

Another favourite song - this is simply beautiful. Slightly slow (without being sappy), this song does full justice to Avril's voice. She sounds hurt, heartbroken, and supportive all at once. The chorus is beautiful - she pulls it off wonderfully. A must-listen song for sure!

5. Mobile

Another great song, but this time, her voice is backed up by an array of instruments and sound effects. The chorus is very hummable indeed, and Avril sounds great as usual. I apologize if this is getting redundant, but I really don't know what else to say about this song.

6. Unwanted

Another nice song with a hummable chorus, but a tad reminiscent of 'Mobile' and 'Sk8ter Boi'. I really don't have anything else to say.

7. Tomorrow

This is a song where Avril really 'sings'. By that I mean that she's not yelling the lyrics out or just saying them - she truly sings this song. The background music doesn't drown out her voice but complements it. She sounds quite vulnerable and sad in this song - a contrast to her regular tough-as-nails character.

8. Anything but ordinary

Deja vu? Uhh...I don't think so. This song sounds almost the same as 'Tomorrow'. A nice song in itself, but it's quite redundant.

9. Things I'll Never Say

Avril turns around to impress with this song. Starting off with some country-sounding wacky music, Avril's voice dominates and totally redeems her misses. She sounds youthful and energetic - another hummable song about (quite obviously) the things she will never say.

10. My World

I'm running out of things to say - another foot-tapping song, but nothing special (and by nothing special, I'm comparing this song to her best - so it's still pretty darn good).

11. Nobody's Fool

Another nice song (!). Very well done, the chorus is unique, and Avril sounds great.

12. Too much to ask

A mixture of vulnerable-Avril and tough-Avril, this song is a good track, but once again, nothing special.

13. Naked

Nope, this song isn't about nudity or sex - it's a simple, down-to-earth song. Well done, I have nothing much to say about it.

Well, there you have it. I know I kind of fizzled out towards the end, but there isn't a whole lot to criticize. If you hate cutesy-pop but can't stand hard-core rock, this album is for you - it offers a nice medium. Avril has hit fame but doesn't let it go to her head. She's still down-to-earth, sure of herself, and just plain tought-as-nails Avril - and she has a remarkable album to mark her name.

Hope this helped. I don't think I'll do any more album reviews, I really have nothing to say. ;)

Good change of pace!
Feb 26, 2003 08:02 AM

I remember first hearing Avril while driving around town. It never really got my attention the first time I heard the song, as it became more popular I begun to look into who Avril really was. I was surprised to learn she is a 17 year old, Skater chick who grew up in my home country Canada!

She became famous in a short amount of time, and I dont blame people for liking her music. She gives a good change of pace to the ''pop'' type music that is out there. I'm glad to see that she was not afraid to show her ''Skater'' type look and attitude. Just recently she was nominated for 5 Grammy's...Being new to the scene this year that is amazing! Unfortunately she never won one, but she should've.

I would recommend Avril's CD to anyone looking for a good change of music style and just the fact of her nominations should show you she's a truly remarkable young lady!

Avril Lavigne-superstar in the making
Feb 23, 2003 10:45 PM

A dynamic spirited punk,a true wild kid,Avril Lavigne was one of those rare characters who had people praising her voice at the age of 2.This 17-yr old has just about everything to become a star.In spite of being a 'no gooder' in class, she was always a determined tough character, wanting to be a star on her own terms. To quote one of her very recent lines,''I'm just coming out and am clearly going to be just myself.I don't worry myself over what I write and feel while doing the same.''Capable of flaunting, sassy vocals, she also has a crystal clear voice to her credit. The guitar has always been her therapist in her blacker moods and she has always wanted to be a star fantasizing 1000s around her bed watching her sing. She didn't exactly have a dream start, singing in churches, fairs, talent contests till she was picked by artista records. There too,she was first struggling for recognition in New York but on swapping coasts to L.A. she finally did hit it out. All,this time she has grown as an amazing songwriter too. Then came her amazing album.

THE DEBUT ALBUM

Avril had her debut album 'Let Go' released sometime in the latter half of 2002,which in turn was instrumental in shooting her to immediate fame.Great album, with vast collection of incidents portraying her colorful life thus far.

SIDE A:

1.Losing Grip:This is Avril sending a message across to the person she once loved, that she doesn't care at all about him anymore, why wasn't he there for her when she was breaking down? She won't be the unwilling victim of illusions anymore. Good rocky stuff, with amazing background music to go with it.

2.Complicated:This is Avril telling us how much she dislikes people trying to be someone else just to make an impression on another. After all, why does one do all this, life would be so much less complex if one could be able to do away with all this. Probably 'the'(well,my best)song of the album has everything--good lyrics,melody,beats,intensity......

3.Sk8er Boi:Avril portrays a story of double rejection, first a sophisticated girl giving a punk the 'cold shoulder',but 5 years hence, when the boy's a superstar and the girl attempts truce it's the boy's turn to repay her with a taste of her own medicine... Great song, the faster stuff, excellent style and immaculate execution.

4.I'm with you:A song depicting the mellower side of Avril, she lets us know how much she regrets being a loner, upset that no one is coming after her now that she's lost. She begs people around her to be friends with her. Very touching song, nice and slow with beautiful https://lyrics.

5.Mobile:This is Avril at the heights of her fantasies telling us that she's a highly mobile person, which is why she gets to observe one change after the other ,as and when it occurs while sweeping across the planet. High pitched song,a bit of a mood brightener.

6.Unwanted:A severe case of betrayal in Avril's life, frustrated with her boyfriend's antics she lets him know that irrespective of how he felt about her now he had no right to make her feel like an unwanted 'no one'. An absolute rock song in every sense, gets you on a real high.

7.Tomorrow:Unsure of how she'll fare tomorrow,Avril wants to believe her friend that tomorrow will be nice, that she'll do better than she had done on that day. A different type of a song which may infuse hope in many.

SIDE B:

1.Anything but ordinary:Avril expresses her profound longing to step out of the mundane circle of life and touch new heights of achievements being convinced that if one does so,he/she'll find that the world is a much more exciting place. A high pitched song with sharp twists and turns.

2.Things I'll never say: Depicting a typical case of 'identity crisis' common in teenagers.Having a strong crush on 'someone' Avril is very keen to know her importance from his perspective but being highly aware of his presence is making a real mess of it,mouth frozen for words. Nice steady paced song with some very innovative https://lyrics.

3.My world:Frustrated by people's pretense to act as if they belong to some other world in her day to day life Avril tells us that yes she's done this and that alright, but irrespective of everything of all,has always acted in a practical way which is why she is easily put off by others' impractical behavior. The slower stuff, with good background music.

4.Nobody's fool:This is Avril giving her boyfriend the scolding of his life ,telling him that she's no fool and can see through his antics .So,he'd better not try and turn her into someone else and like her what she is. Another steady song, with rather orthodox features. Nice song though.

5.Too much ask:Having had enough of her boyfriend's self-centredness,she makes it clear to him that she's not even going to look at him again if he doesn't change his ways. After all, she's just asking him to drop a bad quality, was that too much to ask? A slightly faster song,Avril doing more of conventional singing.

6.Naked:Avril tells her lover how uneasy and vulnerable she feels in his presence and suspects that he can probably see right through her mind, having gotten tired of her own pretense which would suggest otherwise,so did it show? Starts on a very eerie sort of note, but settles into a fine rhythm, all and all,a soothing song.

Not trying this wonderful album by Avril-an upcoming star will be a grave mistake you wouldn't want to make.Do let her try and rock your world for you.
