Kumarakom bird sanctuary
Jul 27, 2017 10:21 AM 2538 Views

Hi friends.I am from Kottayam district of Kerala. Kumarakom bird sanctuary is around 14km from kottayam.  This bird sanctuary is situated in Vembanadu lake.  The entrance of the bird sanctuary is located in the highway itself.  Ensure that you visit this place during the peak season, if you want to see birds.  During off seasons you cannot see a single bird.  For watching local birds, the best time is June, July and August.  For migratory birds, it is around December, January and february.

We have to take a pass to enter this place.  There is a small butterfly garden there on the way.  we have to walk through the stone pavements for about 2 km to reach the bird watch site.  You can see the houseboats passing through the nearby lake. The place is silent and calm.  We have to reach the top of a metal structure to see the birds. It is a very safe place.

There is boat rides also available here. They will take you around the bird sanctuary and some portions of the lake.  If you are visiting this place you should definitely go for a boat ride.  It is a wonderful experience.  There are so many hotels and resorts available here.  You should definitely try the Karimeen fry( a fish which is found in backwaters) from these hotels.

Hey all friends, I would love to provide the review on this beautiful place. Kumarkom, is really beautiful place and it has the best attraction in the world as its "God' own Country". The accessibility for the kumarkom is very easy to reach. We can go to Cochin airport and then can hire a cab to kumarkom which is 90 kms from cochin to kumarkom. The Local sightseeing is as well real natural place which is Vembanad lake with back waters. The lake is situated in a Kumarkom village You will really enjoy the natural lake scene.

There we also have water boats and house boat and can stay a 1 night. Hotels and accomadations are also well managed. They do have AC/NON and double single rooms. We do stayed at LAKE SONG, which was more beautiful hotel with natural resources. The place is very safety and full of nature of water and greenery. Its really an awesome place to visit in your life!

The best part of Kumarakom is the house boat ride. There are so many type of house boats available. Prices vary according to the service they provide. You get single or multiple bedrooms, AC/Non AC, with or without food(most of the house boats provides food), half day/ full day ride, with or without entertainments etc. Charges differs according to seasons too. You get the boats cheaper during offseasons.

Kumarakom bird sanctuary is another attraction.

How to reach:- From Kottayam(you can reach Kottayam by train, bus or car from various part of Kerala) you can take a taxi. There are public buses available till Kumarakom. Most of the taxi drivers can understand English, Hindi and Tamil to certain extend.

Where to stay:-

There are 5 star hotels like Taj and you can find lot of budget hotels too. Many people are doing cheaper home stays if anybody would like to go for those.

Kumarkom - yes it is Gods own country
Jul 31, 2013 01:22 PM 2435 Views

Kerela being one of the most desired holiday destinations in India has a number of tourist destinations such a munnar, tekkdy, allepy and many more..

The destination which I liked the most in my trip was kumarkom, its around 25 kms from Thrisur and  definately a must visit for backwater and peace lovers.

It is blessed with the very famous backwaters and has a number of houseboat services.

It also has a beautiful Bird sanctuary consisting an extensive species of birds which we dont see in our day to day life.

To share some of my personal experiences with the house boat service, if found it to be good enough considering the type of authentic cruises they provide and the type of service they deliver.

The only thing which I found as a negative point is the price which starts at Rs.7000 per day(1 bhk non-ac)   and Rs.8000 per day(1 bhk ac) where the check-in time is usually 12 noon while the checkout time is 10 am and if you have a bigger family there is an option of 2bhk and 3 bhk boats as well.

If you dont wish to spend that much you can always enjoy a 1 hour backwater boat ride only at rs 100 per person.

So if you are going to kerela Kumarkom is certainly a destination you should travel..

Great Kumarakom Cruise in Amrutham Houseboats
Apr 13, 2012 03:38 PM 4434 Views

We 12 members from Cognizant Chennai visited Kumarakom on Feb 12, 2012. In fact we came there to attend a friend’s marriage. Since we arrived prior to 1 day, we planned to take a Houseboat at Kumarakom. After a long search and comparison of many Houseboats, we decided to opt “Amrutham Houseboat” from Amrutham Holidays. We were welcomed at their office and at 12:00 pm, check-in to the boat. Our Houseboat was a 3 Bedroom with a Deck over the top.

All the Rooms were really spacious and Luxurious like a 4 star Hotel. Bathrooms were really hygienic and well maintained. Food in the Cruise was really awesome. Thanks to our chef- Raju Anna who made an awesome Kerala Fish Curry for Lunch. We covered many good parts of Kumarakom backwaters as “Bird Sanctury, Sands of Midnight, Man Made Island, ThannirMukkom Bund, Muhamma, R block of Alleppey, etc”.

I must write an essay about the beauty of Kumarakom Backwaters. Also had a walk over the village and mingled with great people in Kerala. Evening view of the Lake was simply astonishing. After the halt at 6:30 PM, we engaged in many games. Since we opted Night Time A/c Option, they started A/c after Dinner at 8pm. I never had such a good sleep. When we woke up, boat was in Cruise and after the Breakfast at 9:00 AM, we started to our destination with great memories. Once again thanks to the team who offered the most memorable time in our life..

Houseboat In Kerala
Mar 31, 2009 08:31 PM 4270 Views

There are many Houseboats to choose from & that many gaps in the total package, so be prepared . The experience on being on a house boat for leisurely sail through Kerala Back waters are no doubt very relaxing, but if not prepared for surprises like insects or flies in the night, contaminated supply water in toilets, one can be disappointed.

We had similar experience in one House Boat " Shiva Ganga" arranged by Kerala Travel Club.We were given one route by travel agent "KTC", while on board , we were told a different story. But due to our persuasion the boat guys agreed with the original plan.

It is safe, but better to be accompanied with two or more families. One should insist on a Houseboat having dining area covered ( enclosed area )so that there is no black out temporarily in the night. One should address spicy foods that are cooked by the multi tasked houseboats boys intelligently or else suffer.

Kumrarakom - With a pinch of Salt
Oct 14, 2008 05:57 PM 4050 Views

There are a lot of wheels within wheels in the whole serene picture painted of the boating. First of all, there are many things to take into account in the house boat itself. One - There are so many types of house boats, all kinds of sizes and interiors. Do you know what you are getting? Do you know the approximate cost of such a faility? Two - When you book for an overnight trip, know that they are not authorised to ply after 6:00 in the evening.

So you will be moored for most of the night - Is that what you want? Ask them all this ahead. Find out if they can take you to spots where you can ply till 10-11 pm in the night. They will tell you stories of Govt. restrictions. I could not find any such restrictions. Third - A/C They dont put in during the day - but who needs it in the night? So you are possibly better off booking a non-A/c boat if it is cheaper. Fourth - Food. Ask what they will supply for meals.

Ask them specifically for more fish or chicken or meats if you think your crowd are good eaters. Fifth - If you book a per hour basis, make sure that the guys puts on the boat engines and cruises along. If he starts stalling and slow cruising, then you know that he is trying to pull a fast one. Best is to decide the time and the areas that he would show you before hand so that you have some kind of control over it. Ask locals and other houseboat people what they can show you. Sixth - Prices. Do some serious looking up.

I have seen rates advertised from Rs 300/- per hour onwards. There are some websites also. Comparison shopping and haggling is a must even if you do it over phone. There are 700+ houseboats, so even if they tell you that they are fully booked etc. you will find another ready to carry you. The best is to actually see what you are getting before you book it. If you go thru a hotel or resort to do the booking, they will take their cut, but they cannot ensure that you get everything promised. Seventh - The bottom line is prepare to be disappointed. The whole experience may not be like what you saw in NatGeo. The actual locales and waters and life may not be as pristine and clean as depicted. There are ways in which you could still get conned. Unless you have good company, you could also get bored.

If there is a heaven on earth ...
Jul 15, 2002 08:24 PM 5883 Views

Ever closed your eyes

And wished for wings, to take you away

To a land breathtakingly beautiful, peacefully serene

and wholesomely pristine?

These are lines I borrowed from one of the websites that had some info on Kumarakom, because they aptly sum up all that is heavenly about this place. I could not possibly say it better.

Kumarakom - a tourist destination in Kerala made famous by our PMs sojourn there for rest and recuperation. ''Nature's silent beauty provides a perfect setting here for contemplation'' he wrote in an address to the nation. Kerala, itself, has been rated as one of the Top Ten tourist destinations in the world, by the National Geographic Magazine.

It was a review in Inside Outside (the Interiors magazine) that first prompted me to consider Kumarakom as a candidate for our annual family holiday. The article was all about a place called Lake Resorts - how entire ancient Kerala houses had been transplanted to this site to serve as accommodation for the visitors.

Now, Lake Resorts is but one of the resorts in Kumarakom - a sleepy village that has been woken up and rediscovered itself as a tourist paradise. The resort we ultimately chose to stay in was ''Golden Waters'', because there was a special package worked out for employees of the organisation I was with at that time.

But what seems common to all the 4-5 resorts in Kumarakom that I have heard and read about (Lake Resorts, Golden Waters, Coconut Lagoon, Taj Garden Retreat) is that they :

  1. Are located on the edge of Lake Vembanad, one of the largest lakes in this part of the world

  2. All have cottages with traditional Kerala architecture

  3. All provide Ayurvedic services of some kind

  4. All have packages that include a boat cruise down the lake

Most of them also seem to own a house boat in which you can choose to stay, although this is more expensive than staying in a cottage. These kettuvalloms were earlier built to transport essential commodities and have since been modified as luxury accommodation. I did not try one and hence cannot tell you more.

We took a 3 night package to Golden Waters. To reach there, the best option is to drive down from Kottayam - nearest train station (18kms) or Cochin - nearest airport (about 78 Kms). It took us close to 3 hours to drive down from Cochin airport, but a drive on Kerala roads is always interesting as you never know when you will encounter a elephant being walked around by its mahout or taking a bath in one of the roadside ponds. The greenery also helps reduce some of the weariness of the journey.

We arrived at Kumarakom around lunchtime. The road leading to Golden Waters was a regular dirt path and none too impressive but the sight on turning into the entrance of Golden Waters Resort put all our apprehensions to rest.

Golden Waters has several cottages (28, I think) built on stilts, with an intricate network of canals linking the cottages. Swans swim gracefully under the cottage throughout the day. The cottages themselves are fine examples of Kerala architecture with a lot of woodwork. Quite modern inside, with air-conditioning and bathtubs in the bathrooms.

The multi-cuisine restaurant (Nalluketu) also is a unique example of Kerala architecture. The buffet served here caters to a wide variety of palates - from Chinese to traditional Kerala items. At night, they have local musicians come in to play live music while you enjoy your dinner.

The beautifully designed and landscaped swimming pool beckons invitingly by the side of the lawns leading down to the Vembanad lake.

Cycles are available at the Resort if you wish to explore the village and the environs. There is also a canoe that you can hire to go on a canal trip around the resort, with the option of using the services of an expert oarsman from the resort staff, if you so desire.

Places of tourist interest nearby include the Vembanad Bird Sanctuary, the Thaneermukkam which is actually a dam separating the lake from the sea, the temples of Shiva at Ettumanoor and Thirunakkara in Kottayam, the Cheriapalli and Valiapalli churches, the martial arts centre where Kalaripayattu is taught, the island called Pathiramanal in the middle of the lake, etc.

I cannot wind up this review without a mention about the hospitality of the staff at the resort. Naidu and his team cater to your every need with a smile - our daughter was less than a year old when we visited Kumarakom and we were worried about whether the resort would be able to cater to our requests for sterilising her bottle and filling it with milk every two hours, but they came through with flying colours. And did not even charge us for services provided !

From all reports received, this hospitality is true of the other resorts in Kumarakom too.

If you want to have a laid back holiday in serene surroundings, try Kumarakom - you will never regret it.

Package Costs approx : Rs. 9000 /- for couple with 2 kids for a 3 days, 4 nights package (American Plan).

Check out https://hotelskumarakom.com/goldenwaters/about.htm or https://nivalink.com/goldenwaters/for pictures and more details.

As soon I reached the place '

There was coconut water for a welcome '

The place so clean and beautiful

Visualising could something like this be heaven ?

As I walked towards my cozy room

Plants made me evergreen '

The sweet fragrance touched my heart

I was loving everything that I was seeing !

At first the bathroom scared me

As it had no roof '

The typical bricked walls surrounding

And in between the banyan tree standing aloof !

''Lunch time'' my stomach ordered

And off I went for a meal '

I was confused what to eat

As there was everything from south indian to chinese !

I had a relaxed evening

By doing a yoga class held by them '

Even though my body ached

I felt I'd spoken to my soul within !

Along with the other activities they kept

Like water cruises'cooking classes and dance '

Seeing the sunset and the scenery

I'd fallen in love again in a glance !

To add to the comfortable stay

Was the warm and friendly staff of heritage resort '

I've had the best vacation so far

Alas ! to get back to bombay ' from there I had to part !

So dear friends of mine

Are u planing a holiday or a honeymoon '

just give a thought to this place like heaven '
