Though I am not a Malayalee, I saw this movie's VCD almost 50 times on my TV at early morning 4.00 a.m. as at other times it is accessible for me! My wife watches Telugu programmes particulay serials!
I understood the theme to a large extent and my review is limited to that only. All myy kalayalee friends should excuse me for this constrant!
Appottan as the name suggests is like a bunyan tree. Gives shade to all like Madhavatta, Sarojini, Ramankutti etc.
The speciality of the movie that caught me is the name of the village 'Thaamarakkulam' ( a pond of lotus flowers!). Ambili is the moon of the village ... Thamarakkulam. A pet and dear to everyone of the village.
Appoottan's large heart is exposed when he declared to bear all the costs of her education on the dias of the falicitation function held for Ambili. He did not study much but is eager to help annyone who wants to study. That is one message the producer or the writer wished to give to the public.
Secondly, Ambili to reciprocated his generosity and chose him at the end rejecting Nambiar's son. Well, though it simply shows as cinematic but what we should appreciate is the courage the producers exhibited in making a clean family movie and proved that it is not necessary to go for obscenity for makinng a movie suuccessful.
Probably the director might have eliminated the boozing scene when Ambili's letter was read by Kalabahavan Mani.
It is the message that they delivered is inspirating to the other producers and directors.
The song 'Avani.....' is excellently written and tuned.
My sincere appreciationns to the producers, director and all the actors...especially to Jayaraman.
