Kingston, Canada (YGK) - Airport Reviews

The Norman Rogers Airport
Sep 08, 2004 08:13 AM 1665 Views

Kingston Airport, (YGK), is in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. It is called the Norman Rogers Airport, but the couldn't use NRA, because all the airports in Canada, must begin with a 'Y'.

We were driving past it when I had to make a quick pit stop to go to the bathroom.

The airport is named for the Honourable Norman Rogers, the Member of Parliament, for Kingston, in the 1930's. He died in a plane crash, (in June 1940), while he was Canada's Minister of Defence.

It was built in 1940. This is not an International Airport, but is owned by the City.

There are only 5 return flights from Toronto, daily. The building is not very large, and it has washrooms, but no café. There are a few leather benches, and one baggage turnstile.

The have parking available, but you have to pay for it. Even if you are only there for a few minutes, to pick up someone you have to pay a loonie, (a Canadian one dollar coin). It seems a lot when you can park for a day for a toonie, (our two dollar coin).

There are two asphalt runways and the Airport is also used for private planes.

There is a Manager, two check-in staff, two baggage handlers, and three maintenance men, (one of them also shows the incoming planes where to park).

The staff can de-ice the wings of a plane, put in the fuel and do a bit of work on the plane, if there is a problem.

To me the problem is that there is no radar, and they have to use the people in Toronto International Airport for that.

Kingston is on Lake Ontario near the Rideau Canal, in the Province of Ontario. It is 200 miles west of Toronto and 130 miles south of Ottawa. I bet you're asking why they don't use Ottawa for their radar information? Ottawa International Airport, doesn't have radar, either.

Kingston:

I have only been to Kingston once, to visit my cousin who was attending Queens University here. We were only here for one night.

On our way to the University, we bounced in and out of some large pot holes, zig zagged so we wouldn't crash into the students who were on the road, rollerblading and almost killed one on a bike.

We stayed at the Best Western Country Squire Resort, (we had breakfast here). We shopped and ate lunch at the only shopping mall here, the Cataraqui Town Centre.

Now that you are visiting here, I might as well tell you why you might want to visit this city.

If you would like to see the Thousand Islands, (in the St. Lawrence River), you can take a small ship from the port.

You might like to visit one or all of the 17 Museums, going see a ballet, or a musical, shop until you drop, gamble at the Casino or eat a one of the many dinning places.

We bought some wooden trays that were made by the inmates of the Penitentiary here. We did know one of the inmates, (a lawyer from Edmonton), but the person he murdered was a friend, so we didn't go see him.

At Fort Henry, (a 19th century Fort), we learned about the history of Kingston,. It's called the fresh-water capital of Canada. watched the Colour Guard, preform the lowering the flag ceremony, and went to the barracks to have dinner.

We ended our evening at the Basin, dancing the night away to a big band.

Would I Come Back Here:

I might, but not on an aeroplane. I'm rating this airport 3 stars and you can decide if you would use an airport without radar.

Thanks for reading my review.
